D-Day for Magpies

There has been a lot of talk around the community about the future of the Yass United Rugby League Football Club this season. As a club we are very pleased to announce a strong commitment by our local talents has increased the Yass Magpies’ chances of entering two competitive sides into the Canberra Raiders Cup this year.

Despite a crisis meeting on Saturday afternoon and further talks by Committee on Monday night, our club has failed to find a solution to our troubled First Grade situation. As a club we are seeking permission from the League to play both a reserve grade and an under 18s outfit. Early indications suggest the Yass Magpies should see out season ’08.

While we are extremely disappointed from a club perspective with the withdrawal of our First Grade side, we are confident that this is the right move for our club at this time. It is very important that we are able to focus on our young emerging talents and if possible spend this season developing them into strong players, from which our club will benefit greatly in future seasons.

The *'s approach to this season is very much focused on the rebuilding of our 2006 Premiership winning side. Our supporters can be assured we are already dedicated to working through strategies to ensure we are back to full strength for coming seasons.

Yass United Rugby League Football Club would like to sincerely thank all of our sponsors and supporters for your ongoing support of our club, and hope that you are all able to continue with this support throughout the season.

A reminder that the Magpies’ Jumper Auction will go ahead as originally planned with the auctioning of our Reserve Grade Jumpers on Friday night at our Major Sponsor, the Yass Bowling Club from 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Officially, the club will discover its fate next Wednesday following Canberra District Rugby League discussions on the eligibility of the Yass Magpies.

it appears as though Yass will be allowed to run a reserves and an u18's, which is a joke tbh. If they win the reserve grade comp they should hand the winner cheque and trophy back. then agai if they arent competitive in reserve grade with a FG team then they should consider ending it all.

They have put themselves in a lose lose situation.

Anyway, good local footy is back this weekend with all Rd1 clashes to be played on Saturday.

Gungahlin Bulls v West Belconnen Warriors - Majura

Woden Rams v Canberra Scholars - Phillip

The reason Yass are not running a first grade team is that they didnt have enough first graders turn up to play this season. The majority of the people playing for their reserves team were reserve graders or under 18s last year.

excuse me for using the following article from a little while back to base my scepticism on. I haven’t heard anything about Yass first graders having a mass exodus to other sides... soo....

With the Group 8 Canberra Raiders Cup about to commence, the Yass Magpies’ participation in 2008 competition is under a cloud.

With relatively low numbers at training the club is not confident at this stage that they can field three sides.

The first round kicks off on April 12 with Yass scheduled to play Goulburn at Walker Park.

To date only the first grade side appears to have sufficient numbers. The side looks very competitive with a number of new players on board. The Magpies have recruited well in the off-season, with the inclusion a couple of New Zealand and former premier division forwards. Yass will field one of the strongest packs in the competition. Their ability together with the slick backline of the last couple of seasons points to success for the Magpies in 2008.

However, once we get past the First grade side, numbers drop off
. To ensure the Magpies are eligible to compete in 2008 the club must field more than one team. The future of the club lies with our junior players, both in reserve grade and the under 18s. With four weeks to go before kick off, crunch time is upon us to come up with enough numbers. The club urges all those players who said they were going to play and have not yet come to training to get there this week.

To play for the Magpies means you play for your town. Remember how proud we all felt when we won the competition only a couple of seasons ago. Well, we could feel that way again in 2008. But we need your help. If you want to be part of a great tradition and wear the Black and White in 2008 then put your hand up and dust off the footy boots and get to Walker Park.

Don’t forget, tune into Yass FM 100.3 each Saturday morning from 9am to catch up on all Magpie news.

of the 19 players registered for Yass reserves this year 4 of them played more than 1 first grade match last year. the rest are either reserve grade players, new players or under 18s from last year.

Season's opener a first grade dud

AFTER much fanfare about the new Goulburn Workers Bulldogs' entry into the 2008 Group 8 Canberra Rugby League competition, the first grade side has to sit out the season opener this weekend.

A decision by the Group 8 executive last week has allowed Yass to pull out of the first grade competition but still field teams in the under 18s and reserve grades.

Goulburn was scheduled to play Yass at Walker Park, Yass, on Saturday afternoon in their season opener.

The move will also mean there will be two byes each week in the first grade competition.

Heavy off season recruiting bolsters West *'s cause

West Belconnen Warriors coach Adam Peters believes this *'s Canberra Raiders Cup is wide open ahead of this *'s season opener.

Peters said it would be a good year for local rugby league despite the Yass Magpies failing to field a first grade team.

Eight teams will compete in the Cup with the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs back in Canberra this year.

â€*'s vying to win the competition this year” Peters said.

â€*'s a very even comp.”

The Warriors head into *'s round one clash against the Gungahlin Bulls with a new look team following a number of retirements at the end of last year.

But the new boys quickly learnt what was expected of them at the *'s first pre season training session when Peters delivered a speech called “Expect success”.

“We make it clear from the first training session that the club expects success. The club expects to make the Grand Final every year as well as win the overall club championship.”

The club recruited heavily in the off season, with Peters particularly pleased with the signing of youngster David Buttriss from Scholars. Back rower, Buttriss, whose brother Glen plays for the Canberra Raiders’ feeder team Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup, is one of a number of players Peters believes has the potential to play at the next level.

â€*'s only 19, and we targeted him heavily in the off season because of the way he plays” Peters said.

“We are a club that attracts players who want to go play at the next level, and this year is no different.”

The competition has also lost surplus Raiders’ Premier League team players due to the introduction of the under 20s competition. The Raiders’ shadow players are travelling to Queensland each week to play for Souths Logan.

The Gungahlin Bulls enter the season confident after signing a new coach, former NRL half Justin Holbrook. The Warriors are unsure whether or not Holbrook will be playing on Saturday, but they do expect the Bulls to play with renewed energy.

â€*'s a very smart coach” Peters said.

“When he coached up at Dapto they were a very good team and we even played them in a trial a couple of years ago. The Bulls were very confident going into last year with a heap of new signings, but they ended up missing the finals. I think *'s just what they have been looking for, they just needed a bit of a change at the club.”

Peters has handed the Warriors captaincy to lock Matt Wallace, saying he will only play this season as a last resort – unless someone can fix him up with a new knee.

TOMORROW

Gungahlin Bulls V West Belconnen Warriors, Majura, 3pm
Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Blues, Greenway, 3pm
Woden Rams V Canberra Scholars, Phillip, 3pm
Yass Magpies V Goulburn Bulldogs, Walker Park, Reserves only 3pm, Under 18s 1.30pm

Thorley a standout in Warriors' win
Daniel MacDonald

FORMER NRL forward and West Belconnen Warriors coach Adam Peters says he is grooming his young players for higher honours and that halfback Tim Thorley's next step should be to the national under-20s.

The 18-year-old impressed Peters during the Warriors 44-30 win over the Gungahlin Bulls at Ainslie yesterday.

"We fast-tracked him to first grade for this weekend and he was one of the standouts for me," Peters, who ruled himself out of the match with a leg injury, said after the win. "Although we're trying to win the comp I have a goal and that is to try and get all my young players to higher levels and I think Tim is one who can do that."

Thorley was impressive with the ball, setting up two tries and scoring one himself in the dying minutes of the match.

"He can only get better," Peters said.

The former Manly Sea Eagle said he would demand more from his forwards in the coming matches but was happy to begin the season with a win.

"Our forwards didn't do very well," Peters said. "It was a scrappy game and I thought that we never really got the 50-50 calls. But I think the main thing was that we were well short of a run. I don't mean that we were lacking fitness but we only had two trial games and we looked as though that was the case."

Meanwhile the Woden Rams and the Queanbeyan Blues both recorded wins in their matches against the Canberra Scholars and the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

Blues coach Neil Bijorac also said his players were scratchy in the first half, but they improved to close out the match.

"It was 14-14 at half-time and in the second half I asked them to play with more width and they did," Bijorac said.

"They started to put a few more plays on that didn't go with us the first half."

Canberra Raiders Cup underway

Image

It was a round of high scoring matches to open this seasons Canberra Raiders Cup, with three matches played on Saturday to kick off season 2008.

In the match of the round the Queanbeyan Blues defeated last years grand finalists the Tuggeranong Bushrangers by 44-30, with the Blues sharing the points among seven try scorers.

Former Bushrangers Coach Jason Evans got his first win on the board in his new role as Woden Rams mentor, as the Rams scored their first win of the year in a high scoring 44-42 win over the Canberra Scholars. At one stage the Rams led 26-6 but a spirited fight back by the Scholars almost saw the Rams lose the unlosable game.

In the rounds other fixture the West Belconnen Warriors were too strong for the Gungahlin Bulls, and ran away with a 44-30 win in the north side derby.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos and the newly formed Goulburn Workers shared the bye for round one, and will kick off their campaigns this weekend.

Bears blitz Harman 52 - 1

The Braidwood Servicemen's Club Bears came out growling at the Rec on Saturday thrashing the Harman Seadogs 52-12. The Bears scored 10 tries to Harmans 2 and led 28-0 at halftime. Bears Captain Marty Edwards had a grin like a split watermelon at the end of the game with his boys completely dominating the opposition who had only 2 weeks earlier came close to defeating Queanbeyan Blues reserve grade in a trial match. Braidwood's hookers and halves Piper, Hacker, Pig Guihot and Jimmy Evans had Harman's defence on the back foot every time the touched the ball. They broke the defensive line nearly every time they ran the ball and constantly set up their supports when they passed it . The forwards Jonas, Noble, Giannasca, Pender-Seymour, Watson, Clarke, Beckmann and Sunny -Bill Raynolds all made it over the advantage line every time they took the ball up .

The outside backs Edwards, Biggsie, McGrath, Heycox, Backhouse, Augustin and Gara constantly broke through their opposite number out wide making the most of their opportunities created by their inside men. The whole team defensive effort was impresive, only letting in two tries in extremely hot conditions for footy.

The Bears would like to thank Game Day Sponsor`s Vicki and Ray from the Royal Cafe. The Royal Cafe Players Player Awards went to Marty Edwards (1st) and Gordon Pender-Seymour (2nd) with Damien Bigg earning the Coaches Award.

The Bears would also like to acknowledge the top job Cassie Moran (strapper), Megan Boynton (1st aider) ,Joe Read (trainer), Darren Rowley and Craig Nadin (touch judges), Pauline Keighran (catering ) and Adam Dixon (interchange) did on game day.

The one down side on a great day was the injury Tommy Watson sustained to his knee which could see him side-lined for an extended period, and Nigel McGrath will be out of action for 6 weeks with a broken collar-bone.

Next Sunday the Bears take on Crookwell at Crookwell at 2.00pm . The Bears are hoping to knock over the Green-Devils who they are yet to defeat since both teams have been playing in the George Tooke Shield Comp.

The Bruce Stuart Building Scoreboard versus Harman reads Braidwood 52 (Edwards 3 tries, Hacker 2, Pender-Seymour 1, Backhouse 1, Bigg 1 and Augustin 2 and 6 goals) Harman 12
.

The battle begins
By James Buckley

Image

IT WILL be a new-look Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval tomorrow between the Roos and the Blues with both rugby league teams recruiting heavily in the off-season.

Several survivors from the Yass Magpies have ventured into Queanbeyan looking for more Canberra Raiders Cup success after their team folded three weeks ago.

Speedy outside back James Buser will play for the Roos this year while talented fullback Dave Barrie will wear the blue strip after a strong season in jersey flegg for the Canberra Raiders last year.Barrie, who was just 18 when he tasted premiership success for Yass alongside Buser in 2006, said he thought his new club had a lot of potential.

"I was impressed with what I saw against Tuggeranong last week, we were well structured and our second half intensity was the key to winning the game," the fullback said.

"It will be a hard game on Saturday, hopefully I won't have to tackle [James] Buser too much."

Buser was instrumental in bringing down the Queanbeyan Blues in the grand final two seasons ago and the 28-year-old said he was looking forward to playing at Seiffert Oval again.

"It'll be different being involved in a local derby because coming from Yass, we didn't really have one," Buser said.

"This one sounds like it's pretty fierce and it looks like tomorrow will be a battle of the forward packs.

"I'm looking forward to playing against Baz [Dave Barrie] but I know he can do a lot of damage so luckily I've got some inside information on him to try and hold him up a bit."

Both Queanbeyan coaches are expecting a very physical hitout tomorrow and after a bye in round one, Roos playing-coach Adam Taylor said it could take his new-look team a few matches to gel.

"Our build up to the game has been good but we have a completely new look backline this year, and it'll take them a few games to click, so it's important our forwards do a good job this week.

"I watched the Blues play last week and I think we'll go a long way towards beating them if we contain Richard Kilian and get blokes in front of him when he runs out of dummy half."

Blues coach Neil Bijorac said last year's derby defeat to the Roos was still fresh in the minds of several of his players.

"We haven't spoken much about the local rivalry, but I know there are a few guys still hurting from last year's defeat and I'm sure a few things might get mentioned about that come game day," Bijorac said.

"The Roos have strengthened this year and there's a lot of new faces in the club but like every other game we play we've discussed areas we need to improve in and we've spoken about our opposition."

Yass 18s put bite into Bulldogs

The Toner Express Yass Magpies under 18s got their season underway with a solid 36-18 victory over Goulburn Bulldogs.

With five minutes gone the Magpies were first on the board after a well worked Judd Sherratt try and a Matt Freeman conversion.

After reaping the benefit of weight in possession they followed up eight minutes later to lead 10-0 when Freeman crossed in the corner.

Following the good start the Magpies conceded a number of unforced errors and gave away several unnecessary penalties.

Goulburn took advantage of this, scoring two unconverted tries to reduce the Magpies lead to 10-8.

As Goulburn gained momentum Henry Paton and Judd Sherratt combined for *'s second try, converted by Paton which gave the Magpies a 16-8 lead with four minutes to go before half time.

The Magpies defence was again brittle and Goulburn took full advantage, crossing to trail 16–12 at half time.

Unfortunately the Magpies began the second half as they ended the first, not moving up in defence and tackling around shoulders which allowed Goulburn to score after six minutes, taking the lead 18-16.

This seemed to spur the Magpies into action and following a good Josh O’Brien hit up, Brad Wylie scored under the posts. Freeman converted and Yass regained the lead 22-18.

Starting to look the stronger of the two teams, the Magpies lost a player to the sin bin; however, they muscled-up and withstood *'s pressure.

With a man down, Henry Paton scored close to the posts. He missed the conversion and the Magpies now led 26-18.

Yass were now full of running, showing an edge in fitness, they had players lining up to score tries and with six minutes remaining Shaun Davis scored, putting the result beyond doubt. It was a fine try, following good lead up work from Judd Sherratt.

Then, right on full time Davis grabbed his second and a 36-18 Magpies victory was recorded.

A pleasing result for the Magpies; an uncertain pre-season didn’t hinder their efforts and they should improve from this point. Brad Wylie led his team well; forwards Shaun Davis, Phil Skillin and Josh O’Brien worked hard; the halves Dane Snowden and Henry Paton combined well with outside backs Judd Sherratt, Nick Pollack and Matt Freemen and winger Steve Greenwood relished his opportunity in the forwards.

At the time of going to print their next game will be against competition newcomers Southwest Brahmans on Saturday, 1pm at Harden.

Brahmans crush Crookwell in George Tooke Shield

Image
Underway…South West Brahmans, sporting their new Gold Coast Titans-like jerseys, get their 2008 season up and running.

The South-West Brahmans, the combined Harden-Binalong Rugby League football side, started their 2008 season in great style when they came up against the Crookwell Green Machine at Crookwell last Sunday.

The Brahmans scored eight tries to two in a very convincing display of power football. Man of the match, James Blair, scored the first of his two tries in the fourth minute of the game when he finished off some great team lead up work with a very powerful burst, which saw him crash over the line just wide of the posts.

For the next ten minutes the Brahmans continued to hammer away at the Crookwell line with both the backs and forwards working extremely hard in attack and defence. Some very well placed kicks from both Jason Pollard and Abed Atallah kept *'s big forwards back-pedalling.

They were supported by a good chasing game and the Brahmans began to gain the upper hand. While the Green Machine defended their line with determination, it was only going to be a matter of time before the Brahmans scored again.

Mitchell Grange was to be that player, when he took advantage of a reduced Crookwell side after a sin binning for a deliberate offside play.

This gave the Brahmans a penalty and from the tap kick. Pollard set his forwards in motion which resulted in Grange scoring the first of his two tries.

Shaken but not stirred, the Green Machine came back with some very good play and with some good kicking and strong work from their centres. They went very close to scoring, and were only denied a try by John Quinn with some last minute defence; managing to kick the ball dead while at the same time affecting the tackle.

But the Green Machine, with the help of back to back sets of six were next to score. With a very strong bench at his disposal Pollard was able to maintain the pressure on Crookwell for the rest of the first half, with Graham Moorby rewarded for his hard work with a try.

Following a bit of a mix up in front of the posts, a quick thinking Allan Neill put in a little stab kick then regathered the ball and scored a well deserved try.

The second half was marred when the referee managed to give 12 penalties; eight to Crookwell and four to the Brahmans which left quite a few on the sidelines scratching their heads as to the reason why.

With the penalty count running 2:1 against them, the Brahmans were having a hard time trying to put constructive plays together.

Crookwell took advantage of the penalty count and scored again. That was to be the end of it for Crookwell.

The referee put the whistle back in his pocket and the Brahmans regained control of the match. Tries were awarded to John Quinn, Nathan Muscat and James Blair. Both AJ Sykes and Abed Atallah had a reasonable day with the boot which ended in the final score line of 44-10.

This week the Brahmans play at McLean Oval in Harden. First grade will take on Goulburn and the 18s commence their season in a local derby against Yass. The 18s start the proceedings at 1pm.

Magpies’ feathers ruffled in reserves

Round one of the Canberra Raiders Cup Reserve Grade kicked off last Saturday at Walker Park when the Royal Hotel Magpies tackled the Goulburn Bulldogs.

Unfortunately, Yass were defeated to the tune of 44-18 by a much fitter, more enthusiastic side.

Considering the Magpies went in to the game with no trials under their belt it was an encouraging effort by the team.

The opening 10 minutes was a typical sorting out period. Yass forwards really got stuck in to the match and it appeared the boys would get on top early.

Yass crossed first in the 11th minute only to see Goulburn hit back soon after to take the lead 6-4.

From that point onwards, the Bulldogs seemed to get on a bit of a roll and soon extended their lead to 16-4. For the remainder of the half, Yass were unable to exert any real pressure on the opposition.

Yass got themselves back into the contest late in the half with a try; only to let the Bulldogs hit back immediately with a try of their own, allowing the opposition to go to oranges with a 14 point lead.

In the second half Yass started out with a lot more enthusiasm, looking a much better side in attack and defence.

Gradually, the game started to develop into a bit of a slog, with neither side giving any quarter. A small lapse in defence by the Magpies allowed Goulburn to score under the posts and increase their lead to 28-8.

Quickly the Magpies narrowed the gap with a great try to Andrew Swaffield. Unfortunately the goal was missed again. Yass 12, Goulburn 28.

To the disappointment of the home crowd, Goulburn hit straight back; virtually sealing the match at 34-12. Another try to Goulburn a couple of minutes later wrapped up the match 38-12.

The contest fell away completely when three Yass players were sin binned, adding to the woes of three seriously injured players, unable to take any further part in the game. Goulburn put the icing on the cake to extend their lead to 44-12.

A big effort from Scott Pye right on full time allowed Yass to finish the match on 18 points.

In conclusion, Yass tried hard all day in what was a good solid hit-out. However, a lack of match fitness took its toll and the boys were over run by a much fitter and more organised team.

Collectively, the coaching staff should be happy with the effort of the boys and after a couple more games together a good season is anticipated.

Best for the Magpies in my opinion were Captain/Coach Ant Broers, Shaun Greathead, Cody Timoti and Andrew Swaffield; particularly when he moved to five-eighth.

Point scorers: tries to Andrew Swaffield, Bruce Barrie, Kailum Hall and Scott Pye; Tim Warden one conversion.

Next week the Magpies have the bye. However, the under 18s are off to Harden to take on the South West Brahmans.

Forget the bragging rights, Bulls earn grazing rights over Rams

The Gungahlin Bulls put last *'s loss behind them to completely dominate the Woden Rams in round two of the Canberra Raiders Cup yesterday, winning 50-18.

It was a fast and physical match which saw a player from each team being sent off in the second half for dangerous lifting in a tackle.

The score was at 10-6 about 15 minutes into the contest, but that was as close as the Rams got.

The Bulls scored 40 unanswered points in a near faultless hour of football to jump to a 50-6 lead with five minutes remaining.

Joe Onorato was the stand out performer for Gungahlin, scoring two tries and kicking seven goals for a grand total of 22 points.

The Rams chances of a fight back were snuffed out when forward Dene Davis was sent off for a dangerous lifting in a tackle 10 minutes into the second half.

Bulls’ centre Channon McAskil followed Davis to an early shower, sent off for a similar tackle with 15 minutes remaining.

Rams interchange player Leigh Box was then sent to the sin bin for a high tackle in the final 10 minutes.

Bulls coach Justin Holbrook said he was happy with his *'s effort after losing to West Belconnen last weekend.

“We’ve been working hard on our defence and improved a lot from last week which was good” Holbrook said.

Rams coach Jason Evans was stunned by his *'s drop in form after a promising victory against the Canberra Scholars in round one.

“The only positive is that our feet are now back on the ground” Evans said.

“It will be interesting to see how this affects us heading into next week.”

This is just a bit of write up on the weekends games, i do one every week for the program so thought i may as well stick it in here for anyone thats interested:

Round 2 got under way with our first night game of the year with George Tooke Premiers Tuggeranong putting in a dominate performance to totally outclass Harman. A lone bag piper did not help the Gordon Highlanders in their plight, going down to West Belconnen at North Park. Boomanulla again showed they are an improving side, narrowly losing to Bungendore 34-30.

In the Canberra Raiders Cup a total reversal from last week saw all different winners this week. Scholars outplayed West Belconnen 28-18, the Roos won the local derby in a close encounter, while the Bushrangers turned around last weeks form to beat Goulburn 50-4 at Workers Arena.

It wasnt all bad news for the Bulldogs, with reserves and *'s getting up in close games. Gungahlin knocked up their first win in reserves 32-24 over Woden, while the Blues outplayed the Roos 44-26. Yass *'s are showing the future is looking good for the club with resounding victory over Southwest Brahmans. West Belconnen *'s showed that a week is a long time in footy, totally turning around last weeks form for a 60-0 win over Scholars.

This week sees Thursday night football in the capital due everyone wanting to go away for the long weekend. Scholars take on the Bushies at Northbourne for the first time since their extra time preliminary final loss, while the Warriors host the Blues at West Belconnen. On Saturday Woden will be looking for their second victory of the season, taking on Goulburn at Phillip.

In the George Tooke Shield the bag piper has another chance to lift the Highlanders to victory in the first match of the double header at League Park, while Southwest Brahmans travel to Bungendore to take on the Tigers at Mick Sherd Oval. The game between Tuggeranong and Bungendore is sure to be a cracker after a number of off season switches see mates versing mates.

Unitl next week

Braidwood had a tough loss to Crookwell 36-14 after already struggling with numbers through injuries the Bears lost Myself to an Ankle injury, Lock Bill raynold to a knee injury and Second rower Anthony Giancusa to a abdominal injury. If we had a full compliment of players it would of been a much closer game pointing towards a Bears victory but with the second half played with out a bench the Boys struggled against the 19 Crookwell players. Hopefully we will have a few players back on deck for next week

Scholars bounce back in Raiders Cup

Image

The Canberra Scholars have bounced back to form in the Canberra Raiders Cup, with a hard fought 28-18 win over the West Belconnen Warriors at Northbourne oval on Saturday afternoon.

After going down to the Woden Rams in round one the Scholars win over the Warriors signaled their intentions as a team to beat this season, and have proven how even the competition is this year.

In other matches the Gungahlin Bulls destroyed the Rams 50-18 in a nine try effort, while the Tuggeranong Bushrangers thrashed new comers the Goulburn Workers by 50-4.

In the local derby in Queanbeyan the Kangaroos upset their cross town rivals by 26-24, and are now outright leaders after two rounds of competition.

Dogs collared: Tuggeranong run rampant over Goulburn

A FAST-PACED brand of football took the wind out of the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs in their first match for the season.

A high penalty count and excessive defensive work did not help the home side as the Tuggeranong Bushrangers ran in nine tries to one.

The Dogs looked promising in the early stages as Tuggeranong played a cautious brand of football testing the Dogs before completely dominating them.

Captain-coach Sean Rutgerson opened the account for the bushrangers in the 15th minute after the ball was spread wide. Brant Lumley broke through the Dogs' line and found Rutgerson in support to score. Ben Nicoll added the extras to give the visitors an early lead.

so at which point did they look promising? 14 minutes of holding out tuggers, even the local media were struggling on this one.

I saw Goulburn play the the Rams yesterday and it was the worst game I have seen in years. Woden were woeful but still could have won the game. Only hope the quality picks up!

Bulldog spirit prevails over Rams
Goulburn gets first win on return

Image

GOULBURN produced a dramatic turnaround in form to beat the Woden Valley Rams 28-20 in their Canberra Raiders Cup clash at Phillip yesterday.

Having suffered a 46-point drubbing at the hands of the Tuggeranong Bushrangers the previous week, the Goulburn Bulldogs posted their first win back in the Canberra competition.

The Rams' loss moves them into bottom position on the competition ladder having suffered their second consecutive defeat.

But the Bulldogs' win comes at a cost with fullback Nathan Williams and centre Mark Asbock expected to spend several weeks each on the sidelines with injury.

Williams suffered severe groin and ankle injuries while Asbock is believed to have broken his arm.

Asbock will have scans on his arm to determine whether the worst-case scenario eventuates.

Goulburn coach Jeremy Braun said the pair was irreplaceable.

"They are both pretty vital to our side and we don't need those injuries," Braun said. "Hopefully they are not as bad as we think and are able to come out and play next Saturday."

But he has called on his players to further lift for next weekend's clash against the in-form Queanbeyan Blues.

The Blues pulled off a mid-week win over the West Belconnen Warriors 30-12.

"If we don't put in a full 80 minutes of football then we are going to get our backside spanked it's as simple as that," Braun said.

"It's a massive relief to get on the ladder for the first time but we have got to put in a better effort."

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first 10 minutes and led 12-0 but the Rams hit back and went into the break behind 18-10.

Goulburn managed to hold onto its lead in the second half to run out eight-point victors thanks to a pair of four-pointers from Tim Turner.

Rams coach Jason Evans called for his players to show more pride in their jersey during last week but they didn't answer his call.

AT A GLANCE

GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 28 (T Turner 2, M Asbock 2, M Dodson tries; T Turner 3, T Antony goals) bt WODEN VALLEY RAMS 20 (J Kapeen, J Burns, K Hill, B Rendle tries; R Foley 2 goals).

Trying to point out red bullet that coach Jeremy Braun is inexperienced compared to what mantelli brought to the table........... Mick Dodson capt coached in 2005 and took Goulburn to the semis. With an identical team over the next 2 years mantelli took them to the prelim 06 and grand final 07 so he must of imparted something onto the players.Dont worry Goulburn has plenty of cash backing them this year !!!! A whole lot more than they had in previous years. Playing in group 6 the last few years have made them stale and slow as far as i/m concerned.
