PREVIEW: Windsor Wolves V Mounties

Ringrose Park, Sunday, July 29
Kick-off: 12.45pm
Referee: Ziggy Przeklasa-Adamski
Broadcast: Hawkesbury Radio 89.9FM (Link available via the http://www.nswrl.com.au Broadcast page)

Summary: Mounties continued to put pressure on the top-eight after they disposed of an out-of –form Jets outfit 30-4 at Henson Park last weekend, while the Wolves lost their second game in three weeks against the Knights at a muddy Townson Oval. The Wolves welcome back Dayne Weston into an already strong forward pack which features Chris Armit, Jesse Sene Lafao, Sarafu Fatiaki and Dean Parata. Mounties have also been bolstered by the inclusions of Raiders forwards Glenn Buttriss and Trevor Thurling. Windsor Coach Guy Missio wouldn’t be happy with his sides recent run of form and he would have no doubt read the riot act to his men at training this week. Missio knows this Mounties side is desperate to make the VB NSW Cup Final Series in their first year and they have the ability to knock off even the top sides in the competition when they play to their potential. The key for the Wolves is to gain the ascendancy around the middle of the park so that the likes of Arana Taumata and Matt Mundine can weave their magic. A few players for the Wolves will also be playing for contracts next season so that should also provide some extra motivation.

Talking Point: Vaughnny baby – We have already expressed our excitement over rising Raiders prop Paul Vaughan and how we think he is bound for the NRL. On Sunday he will get his chance to front up against two seasoned front-row veterans in Dayne Weston and Chris Armit at Ringrose. Look for him to excel.

Prediction: This match has split the NSWRL Media Department down the middle but after some serious debate we have decided to tip Windsor. Wolves by 6.

I listened to 10 minutes of the second half on the radio. During that time Thurling went off injured and Mounties threw 2 forward passes from dummy half (I think it was Buttriss, but I'm not sure).

Mounties victorious over Wolves from the west

Mounties revenged their round eight loss and obtained the “Battle of the West Cup” on Sunday with a gripping 16-10 win over against Windsor in the VB NSW Cup.

With Glen Buttriss, Trevor Thurling and Jarrod Kennedy all returning for duty after injury, Mounties reshuffled their pack and bench to field a strong line-up against the second placed Windsor outfit who have been one of the benchmark teams in this season’s competition.

Mounties got off to a flyer when Darren Nicholls caught the defence napping in the 5th minute close to the line and scooted through a half gap before forcing the ball for the opening points of the game. The conversion was unsuccessful and Mounties lead 4-0.

After several missed opportunities from both teams it was Windsor who nabbed the next points when Danny Galea crossed for a try and with a high wind wreaking havoc with the kickers the score was locked up at 4-4.

Suni Fatialofa then made the most of his recall to the top side when he pounced on an opportunity and claimed a nice four pointer to put Mounties back in front by 10-4 when Scott Jones conversion sailed through the uprights and the score remained that way until the break.

The second half saw the tight struggle for possession continue with both teams guilty of poor handling and silly errors however Windsor seemed to have the better of the situation and back to back sets stretched Mounties defence to the limit resulting in Kane Morgan casually planting the ball down in the corner for a Windsor try and with the conversion by Matt Mundine from the sideline the scores were once again locked up at 10-10.

The scoreboard then took a back seat with the teams settling into a chess game for field position and with casualties stacking up and errors running high it was anyone’s game.

Mounties then obtained a few penalties and with possession becoming premium they marched the opposition back to their try line and with only minutes left on the clock it was Scott Jones who became the hero for Mounties as he hit a hole on the edge and slammed the ball down for a converted try for Mounties to lead 16-10 with the score remaining that way until the final siren.

In the Bundaberg Red Cup Mounties run of outs continued when they were beaten 44-22 by Windsor on Saturday night at Windsor Sports Complex.

The loss now has them one point out of the top five and looking to next week to make amends.

The news was better for the Sydney Shield side who notched up a 24-22 win against the ever improving Hills District team to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

Soward sends a message

HE PLAYED in all three State of Origin matches for NSW just last season, but Jamie Soward had to be content to show his skills on a much smaller stage yesterday.

The St George Illawarra five-eighth passed a fitness test on his injured back during the week and played 80 minutes in the NSW Cup for the Illawarra Cutters at WIN Stadium after Dragons coach Steve Price controversially omitted him from the line-up that lost to the Roosters on Friday night. Soward's spot went to Nathan Fien, but the Dragons' defeat left them facing an uphill battle to qualify for the finals.

How Soward would love to have helped his NRL teammates.

Instead, far from the hurly-burly of Origin and a long way, too, from the usually heaving atmosphere at the seaside ground in Wollongong, Soward was solid and enthusiastic in the Cutters' 38-16 win over Mounties, setting up tries, kicking sideline conversions and playing the leading role, as expected.

It was one of those suburban matches where the sound emanating from the players - the encouragement, the hits, the expletives - exceeds anything from the small crowd watching. Soward could be heard marshalling the defence when Mounties attacked.

It worked. The Cutters streaked out to a 16-0 lead after just 15 minutes, the first of their three tries set up by a deft Soward kick over the top for Chris Astill to score. Sometime first-grader Bronx Goodwin scored next, before former Bulldogs player Michael Lett crossed for his 22nd try of the season.

Mounties replied midway through the half through five-eighth David Far kas, before Soward offered the last offload for hooker Damien Cook to score, providing a 22-6 cushion for the home side at half-time.

Mounties started the second half well with an early try reducing the deficit to two converted tries, but a fortuitous four-pointer to prop Jeremy Latimore with 15 minutes remaining put the Cutters in a winning position. They ensured the win with Astill's second try, before Soward capped off a productive afternoon, scoring a runaway try with four minutes remaining. The Mounties scored an even later try through Nick Kassis, but it was far too little, too late.

It was an important win for the Cutters. They went into the match on the back of a seven-match winning streak which had propelled them into fourth place in the feeder competition. The Mounties were in ninth, yet just a point behind on the congested ladder.

For Soward, the future is still unclear. With the Dragons staring down the barrel of missing the finals, Price may rush him back into the NRL side for next Saturday's crucial clash with fellow under-achievers Wests Tigers at Allianz Stadium.

However, Fien has been in solid form alongside captain Ben Hornby in the halves and Soward may be stuck in the anonymity of the NSW Cup for perhaps another week.

Cutters make it eight straight

The Illawarra Cutters were 38-16 winners over Mounties at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Saturday.

The Cutters were bolstered by the services of five-eighth Jamie Soward, battling to overcome a back-spasm injury, second-rower Leeson Ah Mau and hooker Cameron King as the searched for their eighth consecutive win.

The home side scored started strongly and after just four minutes scored when centre Chris Astill caught a Jamie Soward bomb and dove over out wide.

Bronx Goodwin dived likewise over in the corner soon after and Soward made the conversion to make it 10-0 after eleven minutes.

Astill's good start to the game continued when he swooped on a loose ball and raced sixty metres downfield before being tackled.

On the ensuing play, fullback Michael Lett took the line on and strolled over untouched for his twenty sixth try of the season.

Soward converted to make it 16-0.

The Mounties hit back with a try of their own to five eighth David Far kas after eighteen minutes.

Far kas converted his own try to make it 16-6.

Late in the first half Damien Cook came on and sliced through some flimsy defence from twenty metres out to score his twelfth try of the season.

Soward's conversion made it 22-6.

Mounties were the first to score in the second half when winger Suni Fatialofa dived over in the corner in the forty seventh minute.

The Cutters were doing plenty of defence and it wasn't until the sixty third minute that they scored when Jeremy Latimore crashed over; Soward added the extras to make it 28-10.

Astill scored his second try of the match with ten minutes left and Soward converted from the sideline to make it 34-10.

With just five minutes left Soward took the line on and had too much speed for the defence, scoring in the corner.

Mounties managed a consolation try through Nick Kassis, the conversion by Far kas making it a 38-16 scoreline.

Illawarra Cutters 38. Tries: Astill (2), Goodwin, Lett, Cook, Latimore, Soward. Goals: Soward (5/7).

Mt Pritchard Mounties 16 Tries: Far kas, Fatialofa, Kassis. Goals: Far kas (2/3).

PREVIEW: Mounties V Newcastle Knights

Mt Pritchard Sports Ground, Saturday, August 11
Kick-off: 3.00pm
Referee: Michael Laverty

Summary: Mounties were blown out of the water by the Jamie Soward lead Cutters last weekend and trailed 22-6 at half time but did produce a better second half performance. The Knights will be fresh after coming off a bye weekend which couldn’t have come at a better time for Rip Taylor. The Knights have struggled for regulars halves and some forward injuries had been testing their depth. This game is of great importance to both sides as they are firmly entrenched in the battle for a finals berth which features teams from as high as third all the way down to Cronulla in 10th. The Knights must come out of the next fortnight with four competition points and improve their for and against as they face Premiership leaders North Sydney and Canterbury in the last two rounds of the regular season. Mounties’ draw isn’t much easier as they face the Bears and an inform Wentworthville side during their run home. Whichever way you look at this match, both sides will head in desperate to win and we all know just how good the football is when teams leave nothing on the paddock.

Talking Point: Return of the Predator – After being named early in the season and having pulled out at the last minute, Daine Laurie looks to have settled into his football again with the Knights and he has put in some strong performances in recent weeks. Everyone knows how good he is at his best…let’s hope that we see some of it in the 2012 VB NSW Cup Final Series.

Prediction: Mounties season on the line so expect them to aim up here. Mounties by 4.

Mounties season on the brink after loss to Knights

Mounties have been defeated by Newcastle on a cold and windy day at Mounties Sports Ground on Saturday.

Needing a win to keep in touch with the top eight, Mounties started well, putting pressure on the Newcastle attack and forcing them into several errors however a devastating season ending injury to Bronson Harrison which saw him leave the field in the 13th minute was the catalyst for Newcastle to open the scoring and in the 14th minute Matt Hilder dived over near the posts after Newcastle had back to back sets.

Four minutes later it was Newcastle scoring again after a turnover had Mounties trying to attack on the first tackle and when they spilt possession only 40 metres out from their goal line, Newcastle shifted to the left side and Junior Sau powered over the line to make it 12-0.

Mounties then found some rhythm and attempted to crack the Newcastle line several times before Darren Nicholls took on the line and forced the ball down for a four pointer with Mounties trailing 12-6 on the half hour.

The celebrations were short lived though as a glut of possession to Newcastle saw Nathan Ross cross the line and at half time it was Newcastle leading 18-6.

Things didn’t get any better for Mounties with Jarrad Kennedy unable to return from the break and with the bench down to two Likiliki crossed for Newcastle in the 45th minute and Joel Edwards scored next to the sticks in the 58th minute to make it 28-6.

Mounties then found some form and with the game out of reach scored two consolation tries with Michael Bani crossing the line after a neat crossfield kick from Darren Nicholls and Sami Sauiluma getting a try after finding a hole in the line and going in untouched to make it 28-14.

PREVIEW: Mounties V Wentworthville Magpies

Mt Pritchard Sports Ground, Saturday, August 18
Kick-off: 3.00pm
Referee: Chris Sutton

Summary: We can start to sound like a broken record but it really is do or die here for Mounties. The loss to Newcastle last weekend was a game they could have won and it would have made life a hell of a lot easier too. Steve Ghosn is now faced with a simple equation however. WIN EVERY GAME! Only then can they secure themselves a top-eight spot in their first season in the VB NSW Cup. Ghosn and his men face a tough ask as they matchup against a rampant Wentworthville Magpies outfit who seem to be reveling in the fact they aren’t getting many NRL stars back. Some of the Magpies’ lesser known stars like Danny Howard, Peni Terepo, Jason Wehbe and Troy Savage have been outstanding the last few weeks and have guided the side to two impressive victories. The Magpies also get some added impetus with the return of Matthew Ryan from the NRL. Ryan recently secured himself a two year contract with the Eels after impressing in the top grade in a number of positions and he will be a welcome addition for Brett Cook.

Talking Point: Last chance saloon - A loss here for Mounties ends their season. They have the team to cause the upset but Wenty are hot to trot at the moment. Should make for a good game.

Prediction: Last roll of the dice for Mounties but Wenty look to be travelling too well at present. Wenty by 6.
