Canberra Raiders Cup top-four set in stone for finals

The Canberra Raiders Cup semi-finalists have been set in stone after Goulburn ended Gungahlin's playoff hopes with a grinding 28-4 win at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval on Saturday.

But the race for the minor premiership has been blown wide open after the Queanbeyan Blues were held to a shock 10-all draw by competition stragglers Woden Valley.

Looking to secure its first finals appearance in three years the Bulldogs never got out of second gear, but did enough to account for an undermanned Bulls.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos' 28-10 win over Belconnen United and West Belconnen's 44-20 victory against Tuggeranong means just one point separates the top four sides.

Goulburn Bulldogs 28 (Junior Vatikani 2, Ben Picker, Michael Bani, Luke Turner tries; Picker 4 goals) bt Gungahlin Bulls 4 (Nathan Corby try)
Queanbeyan Blues 10 (Craig Wilkinson, Dave Pangai tries; Wilkinson goal) drew with Woden Valley 10 (Tim Crome, Junior Moala tries; Crome goal)
West Belconnen 44 (Ryan McQueen 2, Scott Jones, Bobby Roberts, Dayne Ewings, Ryley Thomas, Joe Cramp, Tim Sloman tries; Jones 5 goals) bt Tuggeranong 20 (Carl Johnson, Brendan Brophy, Adam Raptis, Jamal Nchouki tries; Johnson 2 goals).

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 10 Wrap Up

West Belconnen has drawn level on competition points with the ladder leading Queanbeyan Blues after they defeated Tuggeranong by 24 points away from home.

With the Blues superior for-and-against record separating them from top spot on the ladder, the Warriors have completed a remarkable turnaround from last year in which they collected the wooden spoon after failing to win a single match.

Despite missing three of their best players to Country representative duty, West Belconnen dominated Tuggeranong from the outset at Greenway.

The Bushrangers battled bravely however they sorely missed their Captain Coach and star fullback Michael Brophy’s attacking enterprise and leadership. Brophy was with the Warriors’ trio in Hawaii with the Country representative side.

West Belconnen Warriors 44 (Ryan McQueen 2, Dayne Ewings, Ryley Thomas, Joe Cramp, Tim Sloman, Scott Jones, Bobby Roberts tries; Scott Jones 5 goals, Bobby Roberts 1 goal) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 20 (Brendan Brophy Adam Raptis Jamal Nchouki Carl Johnson tries; Carl Johnson 2 goals)

Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 28 (Junior Vatikani 2, Michael Bani, Luke Turner, Ben Picker tries; Ben Picker 4 goals) defeated Gungahlin Bulls 4 (Nathan Corby 1 try)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 28 (Jake Kiely, Mitch Sullivan, Ryan Tuckwell, Daniel Watt, Ratu Tagive tries; Jordan Macey 4 goals) defeated Belconnen United Scholars 10 (Phil Ryan, Chris Faaee tries; Chris Thorley 1 goal)

Queanbeyan Blues 10 (Craig Wilkinson Dave Pangai tries; Craig Wilkinson 1 goal) drew with Woden Valley Rams 10 (Tim Crome Junior Moala tries; Tim Crome 1 goal)

Queanbeyan Blue Levi Freeman plays for Country in Hawaii

QUEANBEYAN Blues coach Simon Woolford believes Levi Freeman is the most skilled and damaging forward in the Canberra Raiders Cup, and this earned him his first overseas call-up to Hawaii this week.

Freeman was selected in an 18 man squad to play two matches against the Hawaiian Chiefs rugby league side in Honolulu, with the second game to be the curtain raiser for the test match between the United States Tomahawks and Samoa at Aloha Stadium on Saturday.

Freeman scored a try in his side's 58-6 demolition of the Hawaiian men in the first match of the series on Tuesday, which would have been one of his proudest moments in sport, but this effort came as no surprise to Woolford.

"When he puts his mind to it, Levi is capable of anything, and by all reports he played well for the Canberra team against Newcastle a few weeks ago, and that was enough to get selected for Hawaii," said Woolford.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Preview

The top of the table clash between West Belconnen Warriors and the Queanbeyan Blues is undoubtedly the Match of the Round in the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup for Round 11.

Few, if any, would have predicted that the Warriors would be contesting in a top of the table clash at any point in 2014 after their disastrous season last year in which they finished with the wooden spoon after failing to win a single game.

But with a new found belief under Coach Justin Giteau, coupled with several high class recruits, West Belconnen has emerged as a true premiership contender this year and are arguably the form side in the competition having won their last five games on the trot.

“It was a really tough game last time we played the Blues but to come away with a win over them allowed us to gain a lot of confidence,” said hooker Nic Whatman, who has seen first-hand the changes at the club after being a part of last year’s wooden spoon outfit.

Yass Magpies to re-enter Canberra Raiders Cup in 2015

After two years in the George Tooke Shield competition the Yass Magpies are set to re-join the Canberra Raiders Cup in 2015.

The rugby league club has a proud history in the Group 8 competition, having last tasted premiership success in 2006.

While the club has enjoyed its time in the George Tooke competition, president Greg Smith believes the Magpies rightful place is back in the top-flight competition. Whilst it is a much stronger competition, Smith believes the home-grown talent running around in George Tooke can be competitive in the Raiders Cup.

"Yass has a lot of talent playing in the George Tooke competition with Binalong and Yass, and with strong player numbers coming through the junior ranks the committee and I believe that for the benefit of rugby league in Yass we need be part of the Canberra Raiders Cup in all three grades," Smith told the Tribune.

Positive outcome in meeting between coaches and referees

A MEETING between coaches and the Canberra Region Refereeing Association over concerns regarding the officiating standard in the Canberra Raiders Cup has been labelled “constructive.”

That’s the consensus director of the Association Peter Castle and Goulburn coach Michael Picker have agreed on, after the meeting at the West Belconnen Leagues Club on Monday night.

“I believe it has come out positively, We’re pretty happy with how it all went. It was constructive and we weren’t really blindsided by anything,” Mr Castle said.

Coach of the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs Picker said on Wednesday: “Hopefully it begins to fix it in some way.”

Queanbeyan Blues coach Simon Woolford lauds West Belconnen revival as 'remarkable'

When Justin Giteau took over the reins at West Belconnen last year, it had just lost to Queanbeyan Blues 98-0 in one of the darkest days in the club's history.

Fast forward less than a year and the two sides are battling it out for top spot on the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder.

It is little wonder Blues coach Simon Woolford branded the Warriors' transformation as ''remarkable'' before the joint competition leaders go head to head at Raiders Belconnen on Sunday.

"We beat them 98-0 last year and I can honestly say there was no satisfaction doing that. It wasn't good for the game, for West Belconnen or for us,'' Woolford said. "You don't get much out of beating a team 98-0. The way they've turned it around has been remarkable.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers hold on to beat Belconnen United Scholars in Canberra Raiders Cup

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers gave up an 18-point lead but steadied the ship to take themselves out of contention for the wooden spoon.

The same can't be said for the Belconnen United Scholars, who are stuck on the bottom of the Canberra Raiders Cup table after a 32-18 loss to the Bushrangers at Greenway Oval on Saturday. The Scholars (1-10) are three points behind the Woden Valley Rams in the battle to avoid last place on the table.

Scholars coach Matt Britt said staying away from the most dreaded piece of silverware in sport was the goal from now until the end of the season.

"Every week for us, we're at the bottom, so we want to work our way up the ladder a bit,'' he said. "Obviously, no one wants to get the spoon.

CANBERRA RAIDERS CUP: Saturday: Tuggeranong Bushrangers 32 bt Belconnen United Scholars 18 at Greenway Oval.

Sunday: Woden Valley v Gungahlin at Phillip Oval. West Belconnen v Queanbeyan Blues at Raiders Belconnen. Goulburn v Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Goulburn. All games at 3pm.

State of Seiffert cops a serve

The state of the playing surface at Seiffert Oval has copped plenty of criticism from Canberra Raiders Cup teams this year, with calls for the grand final to be taken elsewhere.

The facility is undergoing renovations that are scheduled to be completed before February's NRL trial match between the Canberra Raiders and the Newcastle Knights.

Goulburn player-coach Mick Picker is among those who have suggested the decider be shifted to Raiders Belconnen, but that's unlikely as its capacity is far smaller than the Queanbeyan venue.

Queanbeyan Blues coach Simon Woolford described the Seiffert surface as ''disgraceful'', but said there weren't many alternatives.

''The surface, it's disgraceful to be honest,'' he said. ''The chunk they've taken out, whether it's dry or wet, is very slippery. They had a Relay for Life there [early in the year] and it hasn't recovered since. The scoreboard has got to go – in last year's grand final, people didn't know what the score was because you couldn't tell with the numbers. The seating and the grandstand is going to be replaced ... they need to get cracking on it. I think Seiffert's the only place you can have it [the grand final], otherwise there would be people who miss out. This year we're going to be playing on a substandard surface, that's the disappointing thing.''

Queanbeyan Blues edge West Belconnen in top of table thriller

Queanbeyan Blues coach Simon Woolford praised his injury-battered side after it came from behind to beat West Belconnen 30-28 in the top of the table clash on Sunday.

With past Warriors players in the crowd for Old Boys day, West Belconnen looked set to grab outright top spot on the table after racing to a 16-point lead in the first half.

But a brain explosion from West Belconnen fullback Dwayne Ewing, a former Blues player, swung the momentum of the match.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Wrap Up

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have stormed back into second place on the ladder following a gripping 18-10 defeat of the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs.

On the back of a double to powerful outside back Ratu Tagive, pin-point goal kicking from star five-eighth Jordan Macey and the big match experience of their forward pack, the Kangaroos proved that they have overcome a mid-season form slump and will once again they will be in the running for the title in 2014.

Despite having fiery prop Matt Lewis injured on the sidelines with a broken jaw, Queanbeyan’s defence held firm on all but two occasions against Goulburn, who are statistically the best attacking team in the competition.

Goulburn has the ability to blow teams off the park but Captain-Coach Mick Picker believes that they still need to improve their ability to win close matches against the best teams in the competition.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 18 (Ratu Tagive 2, Bryan Cronan tries; Jordan Macey 3 goals) defeated Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 10 (Codie Medway, Matt Worboys tries; Ben Picker goal)

Canberra Raiders Cup referees asked to lift communication

THE feedback Canberra Raiders Cup sides are getting back from referees in the competition is coming too slow and lacking substance.

These are the views of Queanbeyan's rugby league head coaches in Simon Woolford and Aaron Gorrell, who both attended a meeting on Monday last week at the Raiders Belconnen club to discuss these communication issues and come up with ways to solve them.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Gorrell said that any process to fix communication between referees and clubs was pointless unless they started being held accountable.

"To see the head of referees come out in the paper a couple of days later and say that he was surprised with how little the coaches came up with, well, there was not one happy coach at that meeting," he said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 12 Preview

Tuggeranong will look to keep their semi-final aspirations alive when they face defending premiers the Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon away from home.

Following a promising start to the year the Bushrangers went onto recently drop five matches in a row before finally returning to the winner’s circle last week with a 32-18 victory over the Scholars.

Impressively, Tuggeranong did so without Captain-Coach Michael Brophy who was in Hawaii with the Country representative side.

“It was a great trip to be a part of but I’m really looking forward to getting back on the field with the Bushrangers and getting some more wins,” Brophy said.

Goulburn Bulldogs aim to beat West Belconnen Warriors for top four spot

Goulburn front-rower Michael Dodson is adamant the Bulldogs can launch a late-season revival to secure their place in the finals, despite losing two star back-rowers for their clash against West Belconnen.

“Winning this game will hopefully let us build some consistency coming into the last few games of the season, so we can hit the finals with some good form,” Dodson said.

“A loss now could throw us out [of a chance at a top-two spot]. They’ll be tough in Canberra … we’ve lost a few games like it this season. Him [Ben Picker] and Mick [Picker] are good to have around, they bring a lot to the team and are really good to play with," Dodson said.

Aaron Gorrell makes comeback in Queanbeyan Kangaroos win

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell has stopped short of confirming a full scale comeback after playing his first match in over a year since retiring through injury.

"At first it's just to qualify [for finals] in case we get some injuries, so we're covered,'' the 33-year-old said.

"If we're at full strength I probably won't bother, but it was good to get out there and play a few minutes.

"I have to be playing well enough to warrant a spot in the 17. We'll see in the next couple of weeks how the old body pulls up. I may not be able to walk tomorrow.''

What hope has the NRL got if the regional areas can't get it right either.
And you wonder why there are no good referees. Who would want to be one when you get physically and verbally abused by people at all levels. Kids see parents at the games swearing and abusing ref's and think it's normal and do it on the playing field as kids and then as future NRL players..

90 percent of the time it's the teams fault they couldn't win anyway. Sure a decision or two might have swung against them but what about the decisions that they got swing to them.

At the end of the day they are only human and are going to make mistakes, maybe if a bit more respect was shown to them we would get more people wanting to be refs and a larger pool of refs to choose from.

Goulburn keeps top two hopes alive with Canberra Raiders cup win over West Belconnen

Goulburn kept its Canberra Raiders Cup top two hopes alive with a strong 28-16 win over a lacklustre West Belconnen on Sunday.

The victory allowed the Bulldogs (16 points) to leapfrog the Warriors (15) into third on the table, just two points behind second-placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos (18) with two rounds left.

"I could tell from the moment I saw the boys an hour before the game we were off,'' Warriors coach Justin Giteau said.

McLean returns in hunger of another Queanbeyan Blues premiership

HE returned to the Blues from England this season and played just three games before injury ruined his season, but now Queanbeyan Blues halfback Andrew McLean is eager as ever to win the Canberra Raiders Cup.

A torn bicep suffered in round four against the West Belconnen Warriors and work commitments saw the experienced half spend two months on the sideline, but he finally returned in his side's 26-10 win over the Gungahlin Bulls last Saturday, scoring a try in his dominant effort.

And with fellow half in former Canberra Raider Marc Herbert having returned from his own injury plagues a fortnight ago, the strongest halves pairing in the competition is back in business.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Preview

Situated just one point behind cross-town rivals the Queanbeyan Blues on the ladder, defending premiers the Queanbeyan Kangaroos will look to defeat Gungahlin this Saturday to keep on track for the race for the Minor Premiership.

Star five-eighth Jordan Macey believes that finishing with the Minor Premiership or at the very least securing second place will significantly boost their chances of going back-to-back in 2014.

“We definitely want win our final two games of the regular season to finish in the top two spots leading into the semi-finals,” Macey said.

“I think it would be pretty hard to win the comp from third or fourth spot so that’s something that we really want to do.”

Jordan Macey relishing chance to reignite halves partnership with Aaron Gorrell

Queanbeyan Kangaroos livewire Jordan Macey is confident he can reignite his strong halves combination with Aaron Gorrell, adamant he's the general they need for the Canberra Raiders Cup finals.

Gorrell came out of retirement to play his first game in over a year in last week's win over Tuggeranong, after initially hanging up the boots due to serious knee injuries.

"I think it'd be pretty hard to win the comp from third or fourth this year, it's really important we win the next two weeks,'' Macey said.

"I'm not sure what [Gorrell's] plans are, I think he pulled up a bit sore last week, but just having him on the park is a massive advantage for us.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos romp Bulls to pressure Blues at top of table

Four tries to the Cronan family has kept the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in the hunt for a top two finish in the Canberra Raiders Cup, as they destroyed the Gungahlin Bulls 52-8 at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

The Roos face the West Belconnen Warriors in an important top four clash at Raiders Belconnen next Sunday, with the Warriors also still in the hunt for a top two finish.

Brothers Bryan Cronan and new-comer Tom Cronan did wonders for the side considering the finals are just around the corner, with Bryan crossing for three, while Tom crossed for a single in the first half.

Queanbeyan Roos find ruthless edge to thrash Gungahlin

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell hopes his side has found its ruthless edge just in time for the finals after demolishing Gungahlin 56-8 on Saturday.

Having regularly struggled to keep the foot on the throat of rivals this year, the defending premiers made a statement at Freebody Oval.

The win allowed them to stay second on the Canberra Raiders Cup table, and they can secure the double chance in the finals with a win over West Belconnen in the last round next week.

"We haven't done it all year, that's the first time we've stuck it out for 80 minutes," Gorrell said after playing 10 minutes off the bench in the second half.

Goulburn survives Tuggeranong scare to keep Canberra Raiders Cup top two hopes alive

Goulburn coach Mick Picker believes his side is crying out for the Canberra Raiders Cup finals to begin after surviving a huge scare to beat Tuggeranong 36-26 on Sunday.

The Bushrangers, out of finals contention heading into the penultimate week, threatened to pull off a boilover on the road leading 22-8 at half-time.

But the Bulldogs kicked into gear in the second half to keep their chances of a Canberra Raiders Cup top-two spot and the double chance in the finals alive.

Goulburn is now two points behind second-placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos with one round left, and the Roos have a 20-point superior points differential.

GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 36 (Michael Dodson 2, Tim Turner, Michael Campton-Smith, Ben Picker, Luke Turner, Matt Worboys tries; Picker 4 goals) bt TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 26 (Brendan Brophy 2, Reinhold Kamilo, Steve Howard, Daniel Hickson tries; Carl Johnson 3 goals).

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Wrap Up

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos were at their ruthless best in Round 13 of the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup, thrashing the Gungahlin Bulls by 48 points at home.

Now Coach Aaron Gorrell wants his side to continue this ruthless approach into the finals series after they have been found guilty of taking their foot of the throat off their rivals at times throughout the year.

“We haven't done it all year, that's the first time we've stuck it out for 80 minutes,” Gorrell said after playing 10 minutes off the bench in the second half.

"To the boys credit we did it tough there for a few weeks. At one stage we had seven players out, but we stuck to it, and we only dropped two games."

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 56 (Ryan Cronan 3, Jordan Macey 2, Ratu Tagive, Daniel Watt, Thomas Cronan, Luke Sutton, Adam Pearce, Troy Whiley tries; Macey 5, Whiley goals) defeated Gungahlin 8

Woden 32 (Ben Maguire 2, Jeff Morgan, Tim Crome, Junior Moala, Josh Burns, tries; Crome 2, George Pohahau 2 goals) defeated West Belconnen 16 (Dayne Ewings, John Papalii, Tim Sloman tries; Scott Jones 2 goals)

Blues 60 (Tyler Stevens 3, Levi Freeman 3, Jake Knight 2, Tom Reudiger, Leu Saipani, Marc Herbert, Scott Rutland tries; Freeman 4, Herbert, Andy McLean goals) defeated Scholars 8 (Lachlan Sund, Mitchell Shaw tries)

Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 36 (Michael Dodson 2, Tim Turner, Michael Campton-Smith, Ben Picker, Luke Turner, Matt Worboys tries; Picker 4 goals) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 26 (Brendan Brophy 2, Reinhold Kamilo, Steve Howard, Daniel Hickson tries; Carl Johnson 3 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Tuggeranong Bushrangers (6) v Queanbeyan Blues (1) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Greenway

With their imminent Minor Premiership on the line in the final round of the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup regular season, the Blues are set to come out all guns blazing against Tuggeranong on Saturday.

The Blues are sitting in first place on the ladder however a loss to the Bushrangers and a subsequent win to local rivals the Kangaroos, who are just one point below them on the ladder, will result in the Blues forgoing Minor Premiership honours.

“We finished with the Minor Premiership last year and it’s something that we want to do again,” Blues forward Trevor Thurling said.

“The second chance that you get from finishing in the top two is really beneficial in the semi-finals but it means nothing if you aren’t playing well so the main thing for us is to build form as we come into the finals.”

Gungahlin Bulls (7) v Belconnen United Scholars (8) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
Woden Valley Rams (5) v Goulburn Workers Bulldogs (3) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Phillip District Oval
West Belconnen Warriors (4) v Queanbeyan Kangaroos (2) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Raiders Belconnen

West Belconnen Warriors asked to lift their attitude in Canberra Raiders Cup

Their position will have already been decided before they take the field, but West Belconnen Warriors coach Justin Giteau believes it will be a good test heading into the finals when his side faces Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Sunday.

“The Blues game I thought we played really well for the majority of the game before we fell apart,” Giteau said.

“Then the last two weeks the attitude has been pretty ordinary and we have suffered a few injuries ... but there are no excuses for it, we just haven’t been playing well.”

“I’d say it is our attitude that is affecting us more than the injuries we’ve got at the moment because the blokes we have in there are more than capable of doing their job.

Saturday: Tuggeranong vs Queanbeyan Blues at Greenway, 3pm; Gungahlin v Scholars at Gungahlin Enclosed, 3pm; Woden Valley Rams vs Goulburn Bulldogs at Phillip District Oval, 3pm.

Sunday: West Belconnen v Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Raiders Belconnen, 3pm.

Goulburn desperate for Canberra Raiders Cup finals to start

Goulburn's desire for the Canberra Raiders Cup finals to start nearly cost it for the second week running in a spiteful clash on Saturday.

A late try to player-coach Mick Picker secured Goulburn a 34-26 win over Woden Valley, with a lack of motivation again a concern for the Bulldogs mentor given the competition's finals spots were decided weeks ago.

“It’s been the same the last few weeks running up big leads but it’s hard especially knowing we were guaranteed finals,” Picker said.

“Now the finals are here the focus will shift, we have tried a few different things in the past couple of weeks and some of it has worked and some of it hasn’t, but we’ll play completely different next week.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos sew up Canberra Raiders Cup major semi berth

West Belconnen coach Justin Giteau is confident John Papalii won't have a case to answer at the judiciary, despite being sin-binned and sent off in a spiteful 26-20 loss to Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Sunday.

The game finished in drama when Papalii was marched for a perceived raised elbow when setting up what could have been the match-levelling try to centre Ryley Thomas.

Thomas was also sin-binned for back chat in a match where the Roos sealed second spot, and a major semi-final date with arch rival Queanbeyan Blues in a fortnight.

The loss had little bearing for West Belconnen, which was destined to travel to Goulburn for the minor semi on Sunday regardless.

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 26 (Bryan Cronan, Robbie Byatt, Jordan Macey, Adam Pearce, Troy Whiley tries; Macey 3 goals) bt WEST BELCONNEN 20 (Joe Cramp, Scott Jones, Ryley Thomas, Oliver Powell tries; Jones 2 goals)

SEMI FINALS

Sunday, August 10: Minor semi – Goulburn v West Belconnen at Goulburn Workers Arena, 3pm

Sunday, August 17: Major semi – Queanbeyan Blues v Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval, 3pm

West Belconnen faces judiciary after referee complains of being pushed to ground after game

West Belconnen Warriors will front the Canberra Raiders Cup judiciary on Wednesday to answer a complaint lodged by a referee knocked over by a spectator after a loss to Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Sunday.

Referee Martin Jones fell to the ground when walking to the dressing sheds after the Warriors were beaten 26-20 at Raiders Belconnen, and has filed an incident report to the league.

West Belconnen believe it is a misunderstanding and will argue that an unidentified spectator pushed a Warriors supporter into Jones before fleeing.

West Belconnen was on the wrong end of some controversial late decisions and a fan was overhead by The Canberra Times yelling ''you're a disgrace, referees'' several times in close proximity to the officials as they left the field.
