South Sydney Rabbitohs fine Dylan Walker and Aaron Gray over prescription drug overdose
An investigation by the South Sydney Rabbitohs into players Dylan Walker and Aaron Gray found the pair sourced additional pain-killing medication from their own GPs on the day they overdosed on prescription drugs and as a result they have been fined five per cent of their contracts for bringing the club and NRL into "serious disrepute".
Souths released a statement saying they had finalised their investigation into the pair, who were rushed to hospital in the early hours of September 22 after their former teammate Jake O'Sullivan called triple-0 when he heard Walker vomiting in his sleep.
The board determined that:
There was no evidence that either player had illicit substances or alcohol in their bodies;
Both players had nonetheless sourced additional pain-killing medication from their own GPs on the day of the incident, clearly beyond that which was prescribed by their specialists following their respective surgeries;
By their actions and their consequent hospitalisation, the players had brought the club and the NRL into serious disrepute.

Dylan Walker ‘spat out like a piece of meat’ as Rabbitohs release star centre
SOUTH Sydney have released centre Dylan Walker from the final year of his contract, with the young star reportedly furious over his punishment for a painkiller overdose.
Walker is expected to join Manly in time for the start of the 2016 season after his lawyer Julianne Levick said the 21-year-old had been “treated like a piece of meat” after the punishment handed down to he and teammate Aaron Gray following their overdose on prescription painkillers in September.

NRL blocks Sam Burgess' South Sydney Rabbitohs contract: report
The NRL has reportedly refused to register Sam Burgess' big money deal with South Sydney, with the club being ruled to be over the salary cap.
The Seven Network on Thursday night reported the game's governing body had found that even with Dylan Walker's release from the final year of his playing contract, the Rabbitohs were still over the player payment limit for 2016.

Rabbitohs statement on Walker and Gray
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have completed their investigation into the circumstances that led to players Dylan Walker and Aaron Gray being hospitalised on 22 September 2015.
The Club undertook a thorough process which involved interviews with key persons including the two players concerned, the receipt of verbal and written submissions from both players, a review of the Club's medical log and an audit of the Club's protocols relating to the treatment and recovery of players from surgery and major injury.
The Board of the South Sydney Football Club was presented with the report of the investigations prepared by CEO, John Lee, in consultation with the NRL Integrity Unit. It resolved to issue show cause notices to both players, asking each of them to answer allegations that they had not met their obligations under the terms of their NRL playing contracts, the NRL Code of Conduct and the South Sydney Football Club Code of Conduct.
Both players appeared before the Board and presented separate submissions accompanied by their respective representatives.
The findings of the investigation and the show cause hearings were presented to the Board at its 24 November meeting. After requesting further information, the Board has determined that:
• there was no evidence that either player had illicit substances or alcohol in his system;
• both players had nonetheless sourced additional pain-killing medication from their own GPs on the day of the incident, clearly beyond that which was prescribed by their specialists following their respective surgeries; and
• by their actions and their consequent hospitalisation, the players had brought the Club and the NRL into serious disrepute.
Accordingly, the Board directed that both players will:
1. attend educational sessions to better understand how to correctly use medicines;
2. undertake a minimum of 20 hours of community service (in addition to normal Club obligations) including speaking to groups about their experiences and learnings;
3. make themselves available for ongoing regular testing for drugs including prescription drugs; and
4. each be penalised 5% of their 2015 contract value, with a further 5% to be suspended pending successful completion of points 1 and 2 and their co-operation with point 3 above.
The Board has also decided that the fines imposed will be forfeited by the Club and donated to charities, including St Vincent's Hospital's Alcohol and Drug Service.
Through a separate process, the Club undertook a review of its Medications Policy. This focused on the practical application of the policy and whether more comprehensive protocols were required in the light of the incident involving players Walker and Gray.
Having considered the findings of the review, the Board resolved to:
• modify and strengthen its Medications Policy and the Club's Code of Conduct; to place the responsibility on our players to report any prescriptions obtained other than from the Club Doctor to the Club's Medical Officer,
• increase its level of education to players of all levels around the correct use of prescription medication, and the consequences of their misuse.
Mr Lee commented that: "The review was comprehensive and a proactive step to modernise our Medications Policy.
"We consulted some of the top sporting bodies and organisations in Australia, including the Australian Institute of Sport, to ensure that our policy is contemporary, practical and focuses on the wellbeing of our players.
"We will work closely with all of our players to ensure an incident like this doesn't happen again. It was harrowing for the players' families, friends and Club mates; and it impacted the reputation of our Club which does so much good work, alongside Souths Cares, in our communities."

And then late afternoon, a follow up statement...
Rabbitohs release Dylan Walker
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have granted player Dylan Walker a release from the remaining year of his playing contract.
Walker made a request of the club earlier this month to be released from the final year of his contract with the Rabbitohs, in order to take up an extended deal with another NRL club.
The club has now granted that release.
Head coach Michael Maguire joined Rabbitohs members in wishing Walker well with his future.
"We wish Dylan all the very best in pursuing the next phase of his career," Maguire said.
"I have known Dylan since he was 17 years of age, we have had some great times together and he has many good attributes."
"I spoke to Dylan about staying, however I appreciate his desire to secure his long-term playing future."

Tom Burgess has secret NFL trial with New York Giants

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted on Friday morning that the Giants had worked out Burgess as a tight end.

About time there was a thread on the greatest club ever to run onto a field.
I'll give you all some inside info. Sammy heading to Union and Tommy going to the NFL to train I are examples of my Burgess exchange program. Giving different codes the chance to have a Burgess play for them. I'm in the process of brokering a deal to get George into AFL as we speak

That is a strange move by the Titans. Elgey has shown enough to warrant he has what it takes to be a good halfback. They also have T Roberts (although QLD cup standard) and Ashley Taylor who I guess could play 5/8. Not sure if pairing Elgey and Reynolds would work. I must say that Elgey has a pretty decent running game.

Not much younger than Hunt (25) and Milford (21). Elgey is 21 and Roberts is 25. Reynolds is also 25 and Ashley Taylor is 20.greeneyed wrote:Their halves are too young.

Roberts won't be someone to rely on as their main man. The other two are talented, but too young to run the side.

Elgey has the potential , Roberts not so much.
He can pull a magic play but has too many deficiencies in his game to be a regular half.
