Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
Long bow for Riccio to draw suggesting an injury to a stop-gap second rower somehow 'revived interest' in signing a marquee level player that we've been after for 13 months.

Hosking injury opens the door for Raiders to acquire prized back rower
The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio has revealed that Zac Hosking requires shoulder surgery and won’t return to the side until July at the latest. Meanwhile, the Raiders aren't going to chase David Fifita again, but if his manager were to call, they'd be willing to talk. However, all the mail is Fifita will re-sign on the Gold Coast.
“The Raiders are anticipating that Zac requires surgery,” Riccio said. “It was a dislocation and with that came some damage to the ligament. It’s in need of repair via an operation so Zac is heading down that path. It is a three to four month recovery process which means that this injury is not completely season ending but it’s a huge chunk and portion of what will be a tricky part to the season.

Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
So listening to what Riccio actually said, he's saying the Raiders feel they have done enough to express interest, and if Fifita is interested in a move, then they'd be prepared to talk. But it is in Fifita's hands. And virtually all the mail is Fifita wants to stay on the Gold Coast.

Don't think we need him. Hosking has been a terrific recruit, Hudson Young has his best football ahead of him and that 18-year old kid is playing NSW Cup. Mariota needs to be playing first grade and can cover the position as well. Fifita would chew up too much salary cap.

Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
Really interesting for the Panthers to be keen
I think they've kind of exhausted their forward reserves for now, i dont think they actually have guys they feel confident in the next 1-2 years to step up, which is maybe why they're going to FA route.... but yeah typically they've backed themselves to figure it out with positions like edge.
They've got some kids who are probably going to be good in 2-3 years though. Id love to see Fifita at a club like that.

Kind of weird unless they are thinking of him transitioning to a middle aka what Papa did?
Don’t get me wrong I think he could be a great addition to any club…but I don’t think he consistently gives you 900k worth of play.
JFH; Taps; AFB; Haas….they are the 900k grunt players for mine as they do it week after week and lead their packs on the field.

Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
He's an edge, all those guys you mentioned are middles.
For the level of play making and general over all squad around i cant imagine any other edge forward doing what he's done in that team
Put him with a legit team with actual halves and i think he'd be the best forward in the competition.

Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
It’s funny - when I heard he was meeting with a Sydney club I immediately thought “I bet it’s the **** Roosters. They’re losing JWH, Manu, Sualii, Keary, Crichton, Tupou - there’s about 10 million dollars freed up. Why can’t it be someone like Penrith, they never buy any elite talent.” Then I find out it is Penrith!

Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
They never replaced Kikau so it's not all that surprising. Roosters will definitely have a crack too. Fifita I'd going to make himself a fortune out of Rugby League. He seems to be coming off contract at very good times. I want to see him in a good team as I think he could be a top 3 player in rugby league.

roosters aren't losing manu, he's taking $700k to play a few games of japanese rugby then return to the chooks about round 12 for $500kFinchy wrote:It’s funny - when I heard he was meeting with a Sydney club I immediately thought “I bet it’s the **** Roosters. Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
Would love this guy to join us. I think he is really good. Imagine him running off Sanders. If he's meeting Penrith then he's unsettled and contemplating leaving. He suits Penrith because he can just be himself without the pressure of trying to lift the team. Don't know if he will be taking unders though.
With Angus Crichton leaving (although his form has been great in the last 2 weeks), surprised that Roosters are not having a go. They can offer the lifestyle, TP agreements and premiership prospects.
I hope we go all out and pay a little bit more for elite talent. Maybe we need to sign Shaylee Bent as well.

Didn’t the NRL try to stop this kind of thing from happening? Wasnt there an issue with Rapa coming back from rugby? I guess the rules don’t apply to the Roostersbonehead wrote: ↑May 5, 2024, 9:03 pmroosters aren't losing manu, he's taking $700k to play a few games of japanese rugby then return to the chooks about round 12 for $500kFinchy wrote:It’s funny - when I heard he was meeting with a Sydney club I immediately thought “I bet it’s the **** Roosters. If the price is reasonable, Fafita would be mad not to sign with Penrith. In their structures he'll be near unstoppable.

Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
I'm sure the Raiders have lodged a formal offer with the NRL. It will be interesting to see what Penrith a prepared to stump up, and what the NRL do if it's significantly lower than what the Titans or Raiders are prepared to pay.
I suspect the NRL wants a strong team on the Gold Coast and won't be keen to see him leave for a lesser deal.

Re: Canberra Raiders miss out on David Fifita
Penrith wont offer more than 850k. That seems to be where they tap put for anyone not Cleary.
The NRL won’t do anything, he can win a comp there and that amounts close enough. His partner is from the area as well.
I’ll be amazed if the NRL ever enforce that market rate rule again tbh.

When you look at all the high priced talent they seen walk in the past couple of years they must have some kind of cap space freed up.Seiffert82 wrote: ↑May 5, 2024, 8:08 pm I guess the departure of JFH has opened the door.

Saints now are going to enter the race for Fifita. They can and will offer more than the Panthers.

Crichton should be considered. We would probably be able to sign him for a reasonable price if Roosters are happy for him to move on and he's shown he's still got it over the past few weeks.Hong Kong Raider wrote: ↑May 5, 2024, 9:19 pm With Angus Crichton leaving (although his form has been great in the last 2 weeks), surprised that Roosters are not having a go.
