2022 Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg

Post by greeneyed »

Lightning carnival to strike Canberra Raiders under-21s

Peter Mulholland is organising a lightning carnival for the under-21s - involving eight clubs, in two groups of four, across one weekend in late January - as a warm up for the Jersey Flegg Cup. It could potentially involve Sydney clubs like the Roosters, Canterbury, Penrith and Parramatta.

"Most of these kids have missed out on a whole year. It's been difficult," he said.

I can't find any information on Livai Kalotolu GE. Do you know what position he plays or any other stats?

I know Moala is a half of some promise. Are there others we should be keeping our eye on?

'Temple' is very rare as a Christian name. Do you know any further information on the player Temple Beauchamp?

Livai is a very good winger and has also been playing some fullback at the Belconnen Sharks this year. Good pace. I will go through the list with some comments later.

Here's some background and my comments, where I have them, on the squad:

Josh Allen - Big bodied prop forward who arrived in Canberra in 2019, was playing with the Raiders in the Under 20s team in the CRRL Cup in 2020, has also been playing with Gungahlin Bulls. He's the son of Broncos and Maroons player Gavin Allen.

Temple Beauchamp - Comes from Turangi in the north Island of New Zealand, he's a winger, who previously has also gone by the name Rupapera. He was part of the Raiders Unders 20s team that won the 2020 CRRL Cup. Rugby union in his junior days.

Josh Billing - 2021 SG Ball premiership centre, good prospect, played with Tuggeranong Bushrangers after the end of SG Ball. Born in Brisbane, was playing rugby union for Marist Brothers, Ashgrove, when the Raiders recruited him, but he's also a rugby league junior. Player to watch.

Jack Bishop - New recruit, seems to be from the Roosters' system on the Central Coast.

Rayden Burns - Mackay Cutters fullback/outside back, new recruit

Tom Casey - Raiders half/five eighth allocated to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in 2021, creative, he impressed in Canberra Raiders Cup, and made the Canberra representative team that met Newcastle. Born in Mt Isa, he has been in the Broncos development system, and played for the Ipswich Jets and Townsville Blackhawks.

Jacob Church - Has been coming through the Raiders junior teams since 2016, playing both Harold Matthews and SG Ball. Outside back, fullback, back row . Has been with Woden Valley Rams. Was named in the Jersey Flegg squad initially in 2020. Not really seen him recently.

Cooper Harris - Played with the Raiders Under 20s in the 2020 CRRL Cup Grand Final team off the bench. Graduate of Farrer Memorial Agricultural High. Played with Yass Magpies this year in the second row.

Manase Kaho - Played fullback with the Raiders Under 20s team that won the 2020 CRRL Cup, can also play wing, he's very solid. Named one of the best centres in the Canberra Raiders Cup this year, playing with Belconnen United Sharks.

Livai Kalotolou - Fijian, was playing on the wing at the start of the 2021 SG Ball season, then played with Belconnen United Sharks. Has played some fullback this year for the Sharks. Good pace, stepping, very promising. Player to watch.

Aiden Kawiri - Winger who came to Canberra last year, was playing for Woden Valley Rams, very solid winger, can score a try. Previously with Northern Pride, Cairns. Selected for the Canberra representative team that played Newcastle this year, selected from Canberra Raiders Cup players.

Loghan Lewis - Played with Yass Magpies this year. SG Ball squad, played at prop in 2021 grand final, came from Gold Coast. Went to Keebra Park.

Sione Moala - Halfback in the 2021 Canberra Raiders premiership winning team, injured in the Grand Final, but went on to play with Yass Magpies later in the season. Come through New Zealand Warriors system.

Steve Numambo - A winger from Queensland and he's exciting. He was playing with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos this year, and scored four tries one week, and got a hat trick the next. Was born in Mt Isa and played with the Townsville Blackhawks.

Josh Pokoney - Half who comes from Cowra, been in the Raiders system for a while. Part of the 2021 SG Ball premiership squad. Played with Belconnen Sharks this year after SG Ball finished.

Bailey Rogers - Winger, Queanbeyan Blues in 2020, Cooma this year.

Noah Saddler - Second rower, tall and rangy, was very impressive in the 2021 SG Ball premiership campaign. Was also playing with Gungahlin Bulls this year. Player to watch.

Kane Smith - Woden Valley Rams junior, made his first grade debut this year in Canberra Raiders Cup. Has been in the Raiders junior squads. Was in the 2021 SG Ball squad. Front rower.

Josh Smith - Mackay Cutters winger, new recruit.

Mitch Souter - Hooker. Been coming through the Raiders junior grades for some time, Woden Valley Rams junior. Played much of the season at No. 9 for the Raiders Under 20's CRRL Cup premiership team, at No. 14 when Adrian Trevilyan came back from a long layoff due to injury.

Mitch Spencer - 2021 SG Ball premiership winning five eighth. Very good player.

Toby Thorburn - 2021 SG Ball premiership winning hooker. Player to watch. Comes from Mackay.

Sione Vuki - Joined the Raiders Jersey Flegg squad last year, played rugby union with Trinity Grammar School in Sydney. Was playing halfback with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last year and was impressive.

Sam Wentworth - Second rower, centre playing with Belconnen Sharks this year. Came from renowned rugby league school, Farrer Memorial Agricultural High. Junior club Dungowan near Tamworth. Was part of Raiders SG Ball in 2019.

Connor Williams - 2021 SG Ball squad, half, quick but very slightly built, came into the team when there were injuries. Plays very well when called on. Part of the Gunghalin Bulls' Williams clan - the cousin of Tre and Jack Williams, who have both played for the Raiders.

Campbell Woolnough - Hooker, Forbes Magpies junior, has played Laurie Daley Cup with Western Rams 2018-19, NSW Country U18s England tour, been playing with Belconnen Sharks this year. His brother Matt plays five eighth for the Sharks, and their combination was important in the revival of the Sharks in Canberra Raiders Cup in 2021.

Happy to have any corrections and additions!

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Thank you for the player information GE. As always very much appreciated. There seems to be a lot of wingers. Good to see some highly rated 6, 7 and 9s coming through the ranks. Hopefully some will be able to build raw talent into NRL opportunity.

Parramatta Eels player, Caleb Tohi has reportedly signed with the Raiders: https://thecumberlandthrow.com/2022/01/ ... n-dilemma/

A Canley Vale junior, in south western Sydney. Westfield Sports High. A lock, he seems to be the same vintage as Trey Mooney, been an Australian Schoolboy at junior level: https://www.fairfieldchampion.com.au/st ... nd-golden/

Played for NSW Under 16s in 2018, at lock.

He was playing SG Ball for the Eels in 2020 and Jersey Flegg in 2021. He'd still be Flegg eligible this year, I'd think.

Justin Giteau to take the reins as coach of Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team

Justin Giteau, the son of former Raiders captain Ron, will coach Canberra under-21 Jersey Flegg Cup team in 2022. Originally, the returning Mick Crawley was going to look after the Raiders under-21s, but he's also in charge of the NRL side's attack. Crawley will now focus on the latter, while remaining involved in the Under 21s program. Giteau has previously coached the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the Canberra Raiders Cup, the Monaro Colts under-23s representative side and has been an assistant in the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders withdrew from the Jersey Flegg competition just weeks before it kicked off last year, with the club deciding to switch to the NSW Cup. In what is great news for rugby league in the district, the Raiders have decided to run teams in both competitions in 2022. It will be the first time that the Green Machine have run three top grades in green since 2007. The move is long overdue, after the Raiders established a feeder team arrangement with the Souths Logan Magpies, and later with Mt Pritchard.

The Raiders have plenty of good young talent coming through the grades, due in no small part to the efforts of the late Peter Mulholland. The Green Machine won the SG Ball premiership last year - an Under 19s competition - but the best of that crop have been given top 30 or development contracts. Quite a few will likely be playing in NSW Cup. But there is still a heap of talented players on the club's Jersey Flegg list.

The Raiders decided to appoint Mick Crawley as Jersey Flegg coach when he returned to the club over the off season. However, at the start of February, it was announced that Crawley would focus on his role as NRL assistant coach, and Justin Giteau would coach the side. Giteau is the son of former Raiders captain, Ron, and has previously coached the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and Monaro.

In Round 1, the Raiders Jersey Flegg team meet the Cronulla Sharks at Henson Park. It is the first match of a double header, also involving the Raiders' NSW Cup team. The two teams have played just twice recently, back in 2019. That was the Raiders made the Jersey Flegg Grand Final. The Raiders lost by a point, 25-24, in Round 14, at Kippax. A field goal to Sharks five eighth Kai Broadhurst in the 34th minute ultimately proved to be the difference. Despite two late tries from Matt Timoko and Kai O'Donnell, the Raiders just fell short. The Raiders got some revenge in week one of the finals, beating the minor premier, 19-18, at Campbelltown. Toby Westcott kicked the winning field goal in extra time to secure the victory.

Team news: Mackay Cutters recruit Rayden Burns will make his debut in green at fullback. There are a number of graduates from the 2021 SG Ball premiership team have been named, including halfback Sione Moala, prop Loghan Lewis, centre Josh Billing and Jack Sandford on the wing. Sandford has been a regular fullback in SG Ball this year, and last. Sione Vuki is named at five eighth, after impressing in the Canberra Raiders Cup last year with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. Steven Numambo also played with the Roos last year on the wing and is a try scoring freak. This year's SG Ball captain, Mitchell Prest has been included at lock.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a big, 42-24, defeat at the hands of the Cronulla Sharks in Round 1 at Henson Park. The Sharks went to an 18 point lead at the 20 minute mark, piling on three tries. A four pointer to second rower Harrison Leadbitter in the 25th minute kept the Raiders in the contest - but they trailed 18-8 at the break. The Raiders scored three tries in the second half - to centre Josh Billing, prop Loghan Lewis and five eighth Sione Vuki. But the Sharks outdid them, scoring four.

The Raiders again head to Sydney this weekend, this time for a clash with the Bulldogs at Belmore Sports Ground. The Bulldogs are coming off a 30-16 win over the Rabbitohs at home. The last time these two teams met in this grade was back in 2019, when the Raiders won 36-16 at Belmore. The Raiders posted six tries, with the likes of Daine Spencer, Jarrett Subloo and Brigham Moeakiola among the try scorers. It looks like Saturday's match will be a much tougher assignment for the Green Machine. Hopefully they can come home with a win.

Team news: After playing in NSW Cup in Round 1, Mackay Cutters recruit Rayden Burns takes over the No.1 jersey. Sam Wentworth and Kaden Williams are the new second rowers
