Raiders go down to Bulldogs 52-6. Bad luck guys. It's been a good effort, especially given the NSWRL spent most of the off season wanting to expell the team from the competition.

Disappointing but not surprising. Sounds like the Dogs just ran all over them in the second half.

I am sure the memories of last week's success will remain for a long time.

SG Ball: Raiders fall one week short of Grand Final
Jared Dorrington

The Canberra Raiders finished their season in disappointing fashion losing their preliminary final 52-6 to the Canterbury Bulldogs at St Marys Stadium on Saturday.

With the score at 16-6 when both teams ran onto the field in the second half it was still either side’s game.

But the Bulldogs stamped their authority on the match in the second half running in a further seven unanswered trys to book a place in the Grand Final next weekend against the Newcastle Knights.

Raiders coach Peter Marrapodi was frustrated at his team’s execution and felt his side played well below their potential.

“We’ve proven through various occasions throughout the year that we are better than that.

“We completed at less than fifty percent and gave away a lot of penalties,” he said.

The Raiders were on the back-foot before the match even started having ruled out a few players through injury and suspension.

They were a far-cry from the team that upset Minor Premiers Western Suburbs Magpies a week earlier, with drop ball and ill-discipline evident in their play.

They were on the wrong end of a 7-3 penalty count, and had far less possession then the Bulldogs.

Canberra’s sole try came in the final minute of the first half when 5’8 Ryan Gowing pushed his way through two defenders to score out wide.

Halfback and skipper Mitchell Cornish added the two to give the Raiders a timely boost at the half time break.

Overall Cornish was happy with his team’s performance in the 2011 SG Ball competition despite falling one week short of a Grand Final.

“We finished in the top four which was a great effort from the guys,” said Cornish.

“A lot of people doubted us early on, so it’s been very pleasing.”

Raiders star set to represent NSW
ANDREW JOHNSTON

Emerging talent Brett Solomon will front up on the biggest stage in rugby league on Wednesday when he represents the NSW under-16s team against Queensland in Brisbane.

The match will be the curtain raiser for game one of this year's State of Origin series between the two fierce rivals. For the Daramalan College student it represents the opportunity of a life time.

Solomon, who plays for the Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews Cup side, is the first player from Queanbeyan or the ACT in two years to represent the sky blues in the under-16 age group.

After receiving the call last weekend, Solomon will travel to Brisbane this Saturday, spending three days in camp with the NSW squad before Wednesday's blockbuster.

The representative nod means the 16-year-old will be playing on the same field as the likes of Johnathan Thurston and Josh Dugan but he said the magnitude of his achievement still hadn't sunk in

"It's incredible, I can't even describe it but hopefully the camp takes some of the nerves out,'' he said.

"I didn't really expect it but I've always dreamed of playing State of Origin or playing NRL one day so it just wowed me.''

Solomon had his first break in representative football when he was selected in the Harold Matthews Cup team late last September; the first step on the pathway to NRL.

He continued that development when he was one of the youngest players chosen in the ACT under-18s schoolboys outfit earlier this year.

Raiders rewared for Jordyn Ballard

Image

CANBERRA Raiders Development Manager David Hamilton described him as ‘an outstanding talent’, while his coach Brett Maron said the acknowledgment was ‘a just reward for an excellent season’.

Cootamundra’s Jordyn Ballard was named as the Harold Matthews Shield Player’s Player of the Year award at the Raiders junior representative teams presentation dinner held at the West Belconnen Leagues Club last week.

Jordyn is one of three Coota players, the others being Sam Jennings-Mays and Ryan Miller, who were recruited to the youngest of the Raiders teams this year, impressing all and sundry with not only their commitment but also their ability.

The Raiders just missed out on the semi finals of the under 16s competition, with all three returning to the Bulldogs ranks where they are key members of the Sullivan Cup side.

Maron, who developed a close relationship with the Coota contingent, said Jordyn has all the qualities of an exceptional player.

“It was said on the night when presenting the award to Jordyn that he is always a threat to the defence with the ball in hand, while his defence at fullback is another of his strengths,’ Maron said.

“He has great vision in attack, runs great angles and can put himself into a hole, while he can also jump into the first line of attack and act as a ball player.

“He is very level headed for a young fella and demonstrates a maturity not all footballers have at just 15.

“His communication at the back is good, he was a bit quite when he first came to us, but worked hard to improve that area of his game.”

Maron said all three Coota boys were crucial to the make up of the side.

“Sam showed leadership qualities from the very first training session and developed a great rapport with his teammates,” he said.

“It was these qualities that saw him named as captain of the side and he leads by example on the field with a high work rate.

“He hits the line hard, is heavily involved defensively and supports other ball runners.

“Ryan finished as our top try scorer for the year and provided great finishing touches on the wing.

“He also got his chance in the centres where his speed and ability to beat his direct opponent saw him create plenty of chances for himself and the side.”

It wasn’t just on the field that the Coota boys impressed their coach.

“Their commitment to training was exceptional,’ Maron said.

“It was tougher for the Coota boys as they had to travel to Canberra two or three times a week so it’s a massive testament to their parents as well as the boys.

“They, the boys and their parents had to make a lot of sacrafices to make it all happen.

Moran said all three boys will be invited back to trial for places in next year’s SG Ball (under 18s) squad and, based on their performances this year, all three are capable of taking the next step.

In Round 5 Harold Matthews, the Canberra Raiders head up the Hume Highway to face a Western Sydney Academy side which sits one win outside the top-eight.

The Academy boys will be well rested after a weekend off while, the Raiders will still be nursing a few bumps and bruises from their hard-fought 22-18 win over St George in the nation’s Capital.

Tyrell Fuimaono will have his work cut out for him when he faces up against in-form Raiders flyer Ryan Miller. Miller has been everywhere for the Green Machine in the early stages and, if the Raiders forwards can gain ascendancy early, he should add a few more ‘meat pies’ to his tally this weekend.

In SG Ball, the Western Sydney Academy of Sport side will be looking to register its first win of the season against the Raiders out at Windsor.
