Duck takes on Raiders

Image

FORMER Warwick Cowboys under-18 footballer Shane Duck played his first trial game for the Canberra Raiders S.G. Ball squad yesterday after signing a three-year deal with the club.

Shane hails from Tenterfield and was one of three players from south of the border to play for the Warwick U18 side in 2010.

An inside back or back rower, Duck won the awards for top Cowboys U18 tackler in 2010 and also played four games in his debut season of A grade.

Shane’s father Evan Duck said his son was approached by Canberra and two other NRL clubs after playing for Greater Western New South Wales in the secondary school championships in Newcastle this year.

“He is really happy in Canberra.

“The club said they would find him a job and he started work as a builder’s labourer on his second day in the city.

“Shane is likely to start a builder’s apprenticeship in the New Year.”

New Cowboys A-grade coach George McVeigh coached Duck in the U18s this season.

“He played five-eighth for us but will make an excellent lock forward,” McVeigh said.

“His tackling style is well-balanced and effective. Shane has a great attitude, loves to train hard and is a good listener.

“He represented New South Wales in athletics and has a similar running style to former Australian and Canberra lock Bradley Clyde.”

McVeigh has no doubt Duck will go well in Canberra.

“He only missed one game this season due to the New South Wales school carnival. He is tough and played one game with an injury.”

A trio of Raiders rookies

THREE of Cootamundra’s most promising football prospects were given the perfect Christmas present this week when they were named in the Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews Shield (under 16s) team for the 2011 season.

Ryan Miller, Sam Jennings-Mays and Jordyn Ballard were part of a squad of 40 that undertook an intensive six week training program that culminated with a trial against the Western Suburbs Magpies under 16s in Goulburn.

It was their performances at the tri-weekly training sessions and in the trial that led to the trio being included in the final squad of 22.

The journey to eventual selection began weeks ago when Ryan, Sam and Jordyn joined more than 150 other hopefuls at two days of initial trials in Canberra.

The trio were brutally honest when asked if, on that very first days of trials, that they would be part of the final squad.

“No way,” Ryan said, “we thought there would be so many players more skillful and advanced than us.”

“I was so nervous at those first trials and thought at least I had the opportunity to try out,” Jordyn added.

“If you asked me that day there’s no chance I would have said I’d make the final cut,” Sam said.

The trio were selling themselves short because these kids can play.

Sam is renowned for his toughness and workload and has been chosen as a utility forward, Jordyn is brilliant on his feet, can find a gap in defence and makes a perfect fullback, while Ryan has exceptional skills and finishing ability and has been chosen as a winger/fullback.

Their elevation into the Harold Matthews squad is remarkable when you consider Ryan missed two full seasons of football (under 11s and 12s) due to injury, Sam only began playing in Gerringong at 12 and Jordyn, who played one season as a youngster, only switched back to the sport from soccer for the under 13s.

Having been required to travel to Canberra three times a week for the past six weeks, the trio can now enjoy a short break, however they know it’s not a time to slacken off.

“We go back around the 10th of January and they (the coach and training staff) will work out very quickly if we haven’t kept up our training,” Sam said.

“We’ve got a weekend boot camp early in the new year, so we know we can’t let our fitness slip,” Ryan added.

Each of their three weekly sessions included fitness, strength training and ball work as well as a number of speed and fatigue-based tests.

“We got to do plenty of push ups as well,” Jordyn added.

There is some conjecture that the Raiders may be blocked from fielding teams in this year’s Harold Matthews Shield and SG Ball competitions, however the three boys are happy to let the administrators work those issues out.

At the moment they’re thrilled to be chosen in the final squad and if or when they do get the chance to pull on the Raiders jumper they are determined to do themselves, their families and their town proud.

The trio’s selection to the Raiders ranks continues a great association Coota has with the Canberra Club with former Bulldogs junior Glen Buttriss a permanent member of the Raiders first grade side, and Tom Sellars, Luke Berkrey, Joe Bradley and Simon Lienesch all currently or having been part of the system.

Raiders sign Cherrypicker

Image

THE Young Junior Rugby League Club’s rich vein of talent has once again been targeted by the NRL with the recent signing of 15-year-old Patrick Schiller to the Canberra Raiders Under 16’s Harold Matthews team for the 2011 season.

The talented lock forward/second rower caught the attention of the Raiders talent scouts following a strong performance for the Group 9 Under 15s against the Raiders Development Academy in August, 2010.

Schiller then attended the Raiders selection trials and has been training with the extended squad since October. Several days before Christmas he was informed by the Raiders that he had made the team for the 2011 season.

Schiller began playing rugby league with Young’s juniors at the age of seven and has steadily developed both his skills and fitness levels over the years.

Adding to the many challenges faced by an athlete, Schiller also had to deal with an ongoing growth restriction in his lower left leg that he has carried since birth.

Schiller’s mother, Leigh, said her son was born with Talapias in his foot, which required numerous amounts of therapy and surgery in the first two years of his life.

“We were unsure as to whether he would even be able to walk properly, so to see him running and being actively involved with any form of sport has been wonderful. I am so proud of his achievements,” said Leigh Schiller.

Schiller’s father Noel attributes a large amount of his son’s success to the ongoing support he has received from the entire community, in particular the Young Junior Rugby League Club.

“Patrick is very fortunate to live in a town that supports its junior sporting clubs so strongly,” said Noel Schiller.

“Over the years he has been nurtured along by some excellent coaches who have always been very positive and supportive,” Noel Schiller said.

“In recent years he’s gained some excellent exposure through representative football, which has enabled him to enjoy coaching at a higher level.

Experienced guys like Roy Jewitt and Peter Stimson have been wonderful in helping to fine tune his skills and the technical side of forward play,” he said.

Schiller follows in a strong Rugby League tradition with the Raiders; his uncle Brett Mullins spent over 10 years at Canberra and won an NRL Premiership with the Raiders in 1994.

His grandfather, Bill Mullins, enjoyed a career with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters teams of the 1970’s, was part of two grand final winning teams and was recently named in the Roosters Team of the Century.

Both Bill and Brett Mullins are extremely proud of Schiller’s progress.

Schiller will return to Young to play the remainder of the Group 9 season with the Cherrypickers Sullivan Cup team at the conclusion of the 2011 Harold Matthews season in April.

Future Raiders to show off in Goulburn

THE cream of Canberra’s rugby league talent will be desperate to put aside recent controversy when they converge on Workers’ Arena on Saturday.

The Raiders SG Ball (under 18s) and Harold Matthews (under 16s) Cup teams will kick-start preparations for the impending season with matches against the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs in Goulburn.

Canberra’s juniors have been shrouded in controversy this week with the announcement they’ll be barred from the Sydney-based competition unless the Raiders seniors contribute to the NSW Cup.

All involved parties insist negotiations are close to being finalised. The reality is, neither of the Raiders juniors teams care less about politics. They’re just focused on performing at a high level in Goulburn. The under 16s fixture kicks-off at 10am, followed by the under 18s at 11.15am.

SG Ball season starts on Saturday

Melbourne Storm’s SG Ball team start their 2011 campaign in Canberra this weekend when they take on the Raiders at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

With a grand final appearance in their first season, and another finals appearance in just their second season in the national under-18 competition last year, the Storm’s SG Ball team will be looking to continue what has been an remarkable two years at this level.

The Storm has had an impressive build-up during the pre-season, culminating in a strong performance in their last trial match against the Riverina Academy in Albury. Unfortunately accurate scorekeeping wasn’t a priority on the day, but a best estimate would have the Storm comfortably winning 50-12.

Storm dominated in the forwards with Cameron Hansen, Jesse Parete, Pride Petterson-Robati and Steve Liki producing quality performances, while Eddie Maka showed his potential with an at-times unstoppable performance through the centre of the field.

Aaron Presnell scored a hat-trick of tries while Hayden Butler managed to cross the try-line twice. Tremaine Jensen and Richard Kennar looked dangerous every time they touched the ball, benefiting from the service provided by halves pairing Adam Millgate and James Desaxe.

While the performances of these players provides a lot of promise for the season ahead, coach Kim Williams was particularly pleased with some of the younger players in the squad.

“It was great to see the emergence of the younger players in the squad during the trial match,” said Williams.

“Players such as John Filipo, Dillan Brittain, Logan Haughton, Aaron Teroi and Phillip Salue have proven that they are ready to continue the high standard of play the Storm’s SG Ball team have set in recent years.

“There have been some very positive signs throughout the pre-season program with a lot of competition for spots in all positions and a great mix of experience and enthusiasm within the group.”

The Storm has a tough start to the 2011 season with away games in Perth and Wollongong to follow this weekend’s game in the nation’s capital.

Saturday’s game against the Raiders will be a litmus test for the season ahead given the opposition will be fired up after a tumultuous pre-season and both teams will be aware of the importance of early wins in this nine week competition.

Local fans in Melbourne can look forward to seeing the SG Ball team play its first home game of the season on Saturday, March 12 at AAMI Park prior to the Storm’s NYC and NRL games.

Melbourne’s final squad for the 2011:

Fenika Amataga , Evan Apiti-Civcic, Jackson Brenchley, Dillan Brittain, Hayden Butler, Dane Chang, James Desaxe, Ray Ertl, Solomon Faalogo, Aleki Falepaini, John Filipo, Herschel Gideon, Cameron Hansen, Logan Haughton, Evander Jackson, Tremaine Jensen, Richard Kennar, Wayne Kennedy, Steve Liki, Eddie Maka, Jose Makai, Brandon Manase, Romia Matangaro , Adam Millgate, Jesse Parete, Pride Petterson-Robati, Aaron Presnell, Redeem Saleupolu, Henry Sang-Yum, DJ Solomona, Tala Titi

Papali was sent home for disciplinary reasons.

Terrific effort by an under manned team today. Missing Gowings and Lienisch plus copping another injury to Josh Baker, the boys came back from 24-10 down to win 32-24. Back rower Jeffrey Lynch was outstanding getting good support from Mitchell.

Late fade costs SG Ball team victory

Melbourne Storm’s SG Ball side started the 2011 season on the weekend with a disappointing loss to a determined Canberra Raiders side by 32-24 at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan.

Storm looked to have the game wrapped up midway through the second-half after a great try to Herschel Gideon put them ahead 24-10, however a failure to complete their sets enabled the Raiders to charge home to victory in front of their home crowd.

Storm coaching staff has identified consistency, fundamental errors and the play the ball as the main issues for their inexperienced team, who despite trying hard all game were eventually beaten by a better team on the day.

Despite going down to the Raiders the Storm had a number of good performances, in particular Pride Petterson-Robati, Richie Kennar, James Desaxe and Herschel Gideon.

Storm now travel to Perth to play the W.A Reds on Saturday and will be looking for a big improvement in the battle of the Affiliated States. The game will be played at Ken Allen Field in Fremantle at 11am W.A time (2pm AEDT).

Canberra Raiders 32 d Melbourne Storm 24 (Tries: Petterson-Robati 2, Titi, Gideon; Goals: Millgate 4).

IT was a mixed bag for the Central Coast Centurions against Canberra on Saturday.

The Harold Matthews team had a strong 17-8 win, while the SG Ball side went down 40-4.

A more confident looking Harold Matthews outfit managed their first win of the season in front of a stirring home crowd at Morrie Breen Oval, Kanwal.

Coach Andrew Charles said all their hard work had paid off.

“We finally got a win,” a relieved Charles said.

“We played really well. The boys are learning to play a more controlled and structured game which is required at the Harold Matthews level.”

With three of their front rowers out through injury, Charles said it was a matter of sticking to their game plan and staying disciplined.

“It’s about grinding their way to wins,” he said. “They kept them out and controlled possession which wore them down after a long drive from Canberra.”

Charles said their reserves proved they were up to the challenge.

“Andy Tull, Jackson Beresford and Dale Luland all came into the team and did really well,” he said.

Meanwhile, regulars Noah Easton and Brad Keighran were instrumental in the Centurions’ win.

“Noah’s defence has been outstanding and Brad’s direction around the rucks was great, plus he scored a really good try.”

The boys will face a tough assignment next week against Penrith in round four.

“Penrith are going to be very big so we need to complete our sets and make the big forwards work because we can’t match them physically,” Charles said. “They lost their last one so they will be fired up to win this one so we just need to stick to what we know.”

Half time
Raiders 12 Dragons 6

Raiders tries to five eighth Cody Wynnik and hooker Ryan McQueen, goals to fullbavk Jordyn Ballard.

McQueen looks very good at dummy half.

Dragons very big compared to the Raiders.

Raiders tries in the second half to Bowen Beath and a magnificent length of field effort to Ryan Miller, three minutes from time to win the match. A rousing finish, with desperate defence from Canberra holding out the Dragons.
