2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 12 Preview

Image

The Gungahlin Bulls still sit on top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder as we head into Round 12 of the competiton. They're two competition points ahead of their nearest rivals, the Queanbeyan Blues - having lost just one game all season. The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have moved into third place on the ladder, while the Goulburn Bulldogs and West Belconnen Warriors are in a fight for the remaining top four spot. The Bulldogs sit in fourth on points difference.

This weekend's action is headlined by two top four clashes - the Queanbeyan derby at Freebody Oval and the contest between the Bulls and Bulldogs at Gungahlin. It doesn't get much better.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Belconnen United Sharks

The Bushrangers are now on a three game losing streak, having lost to the Bulls, 36-26, last weekend. The Bushies were right in the contest with the Bulls - when they fought back to level the scores at 26 apiece at the 67th minute. But the Bulls finished more strongly, with forward Josh Allen crossing for a try with just over five minutes remaining. Then Bulls fullback Tristan Eldridge produced a 85 metre run to the try line for the match sealer.

The Sharks have won four of their past six games, with their only recent losses coming against the Warriors (24-18) and Blues (30-24). Five eighth Matthew Woolnough orchestrated a big 44-22 win last Saturday against the Magpies at Walker Park. The Sharks piled on five tries in the first half, to take a 28-0 lead - and the match was effectively already in their keeping. Woolnough ended the match with a hat trick.

The Bushies will have the home ground advantage on Saturday, and they're always tough to beat at Greenway. They also got the win over the Sharks back in Round 5 earlier this year. But the Sharks are in better recent form, and they've got every chance of taking out this one.

Season record: Bushrangers 3 and 7 (8th, -70)
Sharks 4 and 6 (6th, -24)
Form: Bushrangers LWLLL
Sharks WWLLW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 24, Sharks 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 31, Sharks 27 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 5 Bushrangers 30 defeated Sharks 24 at Bruce Oval

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues

Second versus third. The Kangaroos host the Blues in the Queanbeyan derby on Saturday - and they'll be confident. They're on a three game winning streak, having beaten the ladder leading Bulls by a big score (60-14), as well as the Magpies (46-16) and the Bushrangers (20-14). Their two recent losses - to the Blues and Warriors - involved margins of just two points.

After back to back losses, the Blues have now well and truly steadied the ship. Blues coach Terry Campese returned to the field last weekend in a top four clash with the Warriors - and the Queanbeyan outfit produced a top quality performance. Queanbeyan fullback Matt Parsons was electric, scoring four tries in the 42-10 victory. Parsons is the top try scorer in the competition, but Blues prop Richard Holani isn't far behind. He has 11 for the season after scoring a double last Saturday. Terry Campese is now aged 36, and his knees are shot, but he's still got it. His passing game, kicking and organisational abilities are great to watch.

The Blues have the best attacking and defensive record in the competition. But the Kangaroos aren't far away. They rank third for average points scored - and they have the second best defence in the league. The Queanbeyan derby is always a great contest - and the Roos nearly got the Blues earlier in the year, after making a late charge. The Roos are coming off a bye and have the home ground advantage on Saturday - but I'll go with the Blues in this one, after their tip top form against the Warriors.

Season record: Kangaroos 5 and 4, 1 draw (3rd, +60)
Blues 8 and 2 (2nd, +174)
Form: Kangaroos LLWWW
Blues LLWWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 30, Blues 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 23, Blues 18 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 5 Blues 24 defeated Kangaroos 22 at Seiffert Oval

Gungahlin Bulls V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Bulls have lost just one game this season - big time to the Kangaroos in Round 8. Since then, they've posted wins over the two teams at the foot of the ladder - the Woden Valley Rams and the Bushrangers. They were challenged by the Bushies, but somehow they just keep on doing enough to win. The Bulls can certainly score points - and are just behind the Blues in that department. If there's an area that Bulls coach Neil Bijorac will be wanting to work on, it is the defence. They rank sixth in the competition for the fewest points conceded.

The Bulldogs will be disappointed with their past two games. They lost to the Warriors (18-10) and then last weekend, drew with the last placed Rams (28-28) at Goulburn Arena. The Bulldogs led 22-6 at half time, but a try to Rams winger Connor Bush - his second of the afternoon - brought the visitors within six points with around 15 minutes remaining. Then with just seconds left on the clock, Rams centre Aiden Kawiri crossed in the corner - and half Jackson McDonald converted from the sideline to grab the draw.

An upset in this match isn't out of the question. In the Round 5 clash between the two clubs earlier this year, the Bulls trailed by two points with two minutes left on the clock. But a kick from half Tre Holten-Williams to the corner, produced the match winner for Bulls winger Dean Aylott. However, all the numbers and the form lines point to a win for the Bulls at home this weekend.

Season record: Bulls 9 and 1 (1st, +62)
Bulldogs 5 and 4, 1 draw (4th, +28)
Form: Bulls WWLWW
Bulldogs WWWLD
Attacking record: Bulls 35, Bulldogs 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 29, Bulldogs 25 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 5 Bulls 38 defeated Bulldogs 34 at Goulburn Arena

West Belconnen Warriors V Yass Magpies

The Yass Magpies are now on a four game losing streak after their loss to the Sharks last Saturday. The Warriors are coming off a disappointing result against the Blues at Seiffert - and they'll be keen to make sure that they turn that around quickly. They have a chance to jump back over the Bulldogs into the top four this weekend - and I don't think they'll easily be giving that up. Warriors to win at home at Kippax in this contest.

Season record: Warriors 5 and 4, 1 draw (5th, -6)
Magpies 2 and 6, 1 draw (7th, -82)
Form: Warriors WDWWL
Magpies WLLLL
Attacking record: Warriors 24, Magpies 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 24, Magpies 35 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 5 Magpies 30 drew Warriors 30 at Walker Park

Fringe Canberra Raiders could play in local Canberra Raiders Cup competition

The Canberra Raiders players outside of the NRL club's Queensland bubble could be free to play in the Canberra Raiders Cup. With the NSW Cup likely to be on ice as long as Sydney remains in lockdown, the Raiders' reserves need a place to play. And for the half dozen who were left behind in Canberra, like Darby Medlyn and Ata Mariota, they might be allowed to play in the local competition to keep their match fitness up.

Indigenous jersey the Queanbeyan Kangaroos' final piece to their club culture rebuild

Queanbeyan Kangaroos club president Ian Baker made it his mission to rebuild the club's culture throughout the 2021 season, and this weekend's Indigenous round will be the final piece to complete the puzzle.

"This year the whole club has gathered together to get a new culture for ourselves, we're now a more family orientated club which everyone is loving," Roos player Reeion Murray said.

MATCH REPORT: Blues dominate Kangaroos in Queanbeyan derby

The Queanbeyan Blues put on a rugby league clinic to come out victorious over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos with an impressive 44-12 scoreline at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

The king of Queanbeyan, Terry Campese, was at his very best setting up tries and line breaks at will. He was aided by standout performances from forwards Isaiah Latu, Joshua Hitchins and centre Cyprian Ale. Their explosive running consistently put the Roos defence on the back foot.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Blues fullback Mathew Parsons stars in Queanbeyan derby win

Queanbeyan Blues fullback Mathew Parsons continued his brilliant season with a double in Saturday's fiery local derby 44-12 triumph over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. Parsons, the leading Canberra Raiders Cup try-scorer this season with 16 tries in 11 games, is hoping to make it to NSW Cup level.

"Terry [Campese's] a great role model, he helps me out heaps and over the last two years he's been really good to me," Parsons said.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers 32 (Tries: J Sandford, B Moeakiola, M Brophy, L Oakley, J Martin, J Haywood-Whiley; Goals: L Oakley 4) defeated Belconnen United Sharks 22 (Tries: E McCarroll 2, L Kaloutolu, N Ngere; Goals: M Woolnough 3)

Queanbeyan Blues 44 (Tries: M Parsons 2, I Latu 2, U Asomua, J Delle, T Campese, C Ale; Goals: T Campese 6) defeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos 12 (Tries: T Casey, J Baxter; Goals: L Ingram 2)

Goulburn Bulldogs 22 (Tries: D Stephens, J Little, I Walker, J Martin; Goals: I Walker 3) drew Gungahlin Bulls 22 (Tries: M Richards, M Fellows, N Saddler, J Owen; Goals: L Thomson 3)

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors scrape two-point win after Yass Magpies stage 12-point comeback

Unforced errors and scrappy play proved the theme of Sunday's match at Raiders Belconnen.

"We made a lot of errors, and we made it very hard for ourselves," Warriors coach Matt Gafa said. "Our defence on our goal line is what got us the two points today I think. We were pretty poor and scrappy otherwise.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Preview

Image

UPDATE: Canberra Raiders Cup Round 13 called off: Due to extensive rain in the Canberra region, all grounds have been closed. All Canberra Raiders Cup, Katrina Fanning Shield, George Tooke Shield and Under 19s matches will be recorded as a washout.

The Gungahlin Bulls are still on top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder, but the Queanbeyan Blues are nipping at their heels. The Bulls have still only been defeated once this season, but Saturday's draw with the Goulburn Bulldogs has seen Blues draw within one competition point of the ladder leaders. The West Belconnen Warriors have moved into third place on the ladder, while the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Goulburn Bulldogs are fighting it out for fourth. They are level on competition points and points difference - with the Roos in fourth only on percentages.

Yass Magpies V Gungahlin Bulls

The Magpies host the ladder leading Bulls at Walker Park on Saturday - and it doesn't get much tougher. The Magpies are now on a five game losing streak, after they fell short last weekend against the Warriors at Kippax. The Warriors went to the break with an 18-4 lead, but the Magpies then made a comeback. Magpies winger Bailey Timmer crossed 10 minutes into the second half, while Raiders SG Ball forward Caleb Esera stormed over the line in the 60th minute. At that point, the Magpies trailed by just two points - and while they had their opportunities in the final quarter, they just couldn't score. The Warriors held on for an 18-16 win, in a scrappy match marred by errors and penalties.

With five minutes remaining, it looked like the Bulls would produce a narrow, come from behind win against the Bulldogs at Gungahlin last Saturday. They always seem to do just enough to win. They trailed 12-6 at the break, and then by 18-12 after the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Tries to Raiders juniors Matthew Fellows and Noah Saddler saw the Bulls take a 22-18 lead at the 75th minute. Goulburn winger Jyi Little was the fly in the ointment for the Bulls. He charged over in the corner in the dying stages and leveled the scores at 22 all - but the conversion failed from the sideline. And then there was not enough time left for the deadline to be broken.

The Bulls rank second in the league in attack - but defence is their relative weakness. They rank sixth in the competition for fewest points conceded. However, no team has conceded more points per match than the Magpies - and only the Rams have a bigger negative points differential. Yass has the home ground advantage in this contest, but it is difficult to see them springing an upset against Gungahlin.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 7, 1 draw (8th, -84)
Bulls 9 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +62)
Form: Magpies LLLLL
Bulls WLWWD
Attacking record: Magpies 25, Bulls 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 33, Bulls 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 4 Bulls 36 defeated Magpies 34 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Woden Valley Rams V West Belconnen Warriors

The Rams come into this contest off the bye - after forcing a 28 all draw with the Bulldogs in their last outing. That was some relief for a team on a seven game losing streak. The Warriors were spanked by the Blues, 42-10, two weeks ago, but held on for a narrow two point victory against the Magpies last Sunday. Expect the Warriors to be too strong in this one, even though they're not on their own turf.

Season record: Rams 1 and 8, 1 draw (9th, -142)
Warriors 6 and 4, 1 draw (3rd, -4)
Form: Rams LLLLD
Warriors LWWLW
Attacking record: Rams 18, Warriors 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 33, Warriors 23 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 4 Warriors 30 defeated Rams 12 at Kippax

Queanbeyan Blues V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Blues now on a four game winning streak, following a big 44-12 win over the Kangaroos in the Queanbeyan derby at Freebody Oval last Saturday. The Blues have the best attack and defence in the competition, but most were expecting a might tighter contest. The match was effectively all over by half time, with the Blues leading 28-0. Electric fullback Matt Parsons scored a double, as did second rower Isaiah Latu. Parsons has now scored 16 tries this season, and sits atop the top try scorers list.

The Bushrangers broke a three game losing streak last weekend with a 32-22 win over the Sharks. The Sharks had the better of the first half, with tries to fullback Livai Kaloutolu and hooker Ewan McCarroll giving the visitors a 12-0 lead after 20 minutes. Bushrangers veteran Michael Brophy, playing at five eighth, burrowed across the line from dummy half in the 25th minute. Five minutes later, second rower Nuku Ngere stepped through the middle, to score beside the posts, giving the Sharks an 18-4 lead. The Bushies closed the gap just before half time, with a try in the corner to winger Brigham Moeakiola.

The Bushrangers scored four straight tries in the second half - to Jack Sandford, Jordan Martin, Julian Haywood-Whiley and Liam Oakley - and had well and truly secured the game with 10 minutes remaining. They were aided by the dismissal of Sharks fullback Kaloutolu in the 58th minute. Ewen McCarroll got his second try of the day for the Sharks with seven minutes remaining, but it was by then all too late.

While the Bushrangers will be bouyed by that victory, expect the Blues to continue on their winning ways on Saturday at Seiffert.

Season record: Blues 9 and 2 (2nd, +206)
Bushrangers 4 and 7 (7th,-60)
Form: Blues LWWWW
Bushrangers WLLLW
Attacking record: Blues 37, Bushrangers 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 18, Bushrangers 30 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 4 Blues 60 defeated Bushrangers 6 at Greenway

Belconnen United Sharks V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Sharks host the Kangaroos at the old Raiders HQ at Bruce on Saturday - with both teams being last start losers. The fourth placed Kangaroos have the better recent form and the better season record. But it should be a good contest, with the Sharks being far from easy beats this season. The Sharks are being steered around well by five eighth Matthew Woolnough - and they have some good young talent - so don't be surprised if the home team can produce a bit of an upset.

Season record: Sharks 4 and 7 (6th, -34)
Kangaroos 5 and 5 (4th, +28)
Form: Sharks WLLWL
Kangaroos LWWWL
Attacking record: Sharks 25, Kangaroos 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 28, Kangaroos 25 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 4 Kangaroos 24 defeated Sharks 18 at Freebody Oval

Round 13 Canberra Raiders Cup called off due to wet weather and ground closures

All Canberra Region Rugby League senior competition games this Saturday 24 July have been called off due to ground closures. This includes all Canberra Raiders Cup, Katrina Fanning Shield, George Tooke Shield and Under 19s matches. All matches will be recorded as a washout. All CRRL Round 10 junior matches from Under 6 to Under 17 this weekend have also been called off due to ground closures.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Image

Round 13 of the Canberra Raiders Cup was declared a washout, but the competition pushes on this weekend, with Round 14 headlined by two blockbusters on Sunday. At Greenway - a match relocated from Kippax due to ground closure - a top four clash will unfold between the third placed West Belconnen Warriors and the ladder leading Gungahlin Bulls. And at Goulburn, a Bulldogs team desperate to force their way into the top four will host the Queanbeyan Blues.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Yass Magpies

This is a battle between seventh and eighth on the competition ladder - and time is running out for both the Bushrangers and Magpies. The Bushrangers broke a three game losing streak in their last match, getting a 32-22 win over the Sharks. They scored four straight tries in the second half and had the game well in their keeping with 10 minutes remaining. A late try to the Sharks' Ewen McCarroll was all too late.

Watch for Raiders NSW Cup player Ata Mariota off the bench for the Bushrangers this week. He'll play alongside his younger brother Niu. With NSW Cup in abeyance due to Sydney's COVID outbreak, the Raiders are looking to give their fringe players some footy in the local competition.

The Magpies are on a five game losing streak, after they fell just short in their last outing against the Warriors at Kippax. West Belconnen held on for an 18-16 win in that contest, in a scrappy match marred by errors and penalties. No team has conceded more points per match than the Magpies - and only the Rams have a bigger negative points differential. The Bushrangers have the better recent form line and should be too good in this one.

Season record: Bushrangers 4 and 7 (7th,-60)
Magpies 2 and 7, 1 draw (8th, -84)
Form: Bushrangers WLLLW
Magpies LLLLL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 25, Magpies 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 30, Magpies 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 3 Magpies 42 defeated Bushrangers 40 at Walker Park

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Woden Valley Rams

The fourth placed Kangaroos host the Rams at Freebody on Saturday - and they should be confident of getting a win against the last placed Woden outfit.

The Rams come into this contest having forced a 28 all draw with the Bulldogs in their last game. That was some relief for a team on a seven game losing streak - but not much relief. They will, however, be boosted by the inclusion of Raiders young guns Albert Hopoate and Clay Webb.

The Kangaroos suffered a big 44-12 loss to cross town rivals, the Blues, in the Queanbeyan derby in their last contest. But their recent form line has been good. Expect the Roos to take this one at home.

Season record: Kangaroos 5 and 5 (4th, +28)
Rams 1 and 8, 1 draw (9th, -142)
Form: Kangaroos LWWWL
Rams LLLLD
Attacking record: Kangaroos 28, Rams 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 25, Rams 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 3 Kangaroos 26 defeated Rams 12

West Belconnen Warriors V Gungahlin Bulls

It is a top four contest at Greenway on Sunday, when the third placed Warriors "host" the ladder leading Bulls. When the two teams met earlier this year, the Bulls only just produced a last gasp victory - so the West Belconnen outfit will know they can topple one of the premiership favourites. The Warriors have won three of their past five matches. While they were spanked by the Blues, 42-10, when they travelled to Seiffert three weeks ago, they managed to hold out the Magpies and take a two point victory in their last match.

With five minutes remaining, it looked like the Bulls would produced a narrow, come from behind win against the Bulldogs at Gungahlin in their last contest. They always seem to do just enough to win. The Bulls took a 22-18 lead at the 75th minute after trailing for a good part of the match. But a try to Goulburn winger Jyi Little in the final stages forced a 22 all draw. While the numbers point to a win for Gungahlin - don't count the Warriors out. Raiders NSW Cup players Darby Medlyn and Lachlan Lewis will be playing in Warriors colours.

Season record: Warriors 6 and 4, 1 draw (3rd, -4)
Bulls 9 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +62)
Form: Warriors LWWLW
Bulls WLWWD
Attacking record: Warriors 23, Bulls 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 23, Bulls 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 3 Bulls 32 defeated Warriors 30

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Blues

The Goulburn Bulldogs host the team that is in the best form in the competition - the Queanbeyan Blues. The Blues might be in second place on the ladder - just one competition point adrift of the Bulls - but they have the best attack and defence in the competition. They are on a four game winning streak and produced a dominant performance against the Kangaroos in the Queanbeyan derby two weeks ago.

The Bulldogs are in fifth spot on the ladder - but that is only because of percentages. They are on the same competition points - and have the same points differential - as the fourth placed Kangaroos. They'll be desperate for the win, so as to push their way into the top four. The Bulldogs are sitting on two draws from their past two matches - against the Rams and the Bulls - so it is going to be tough against the Blues, even on home turf. Watch for Raiders NSW Cup hooker, Adrian Trevilyan, who will make his Canberra Raiders Cup debut this weekend for the Bulldogs.

This too will be a great contest, but I expect the Blues, with Terry Campese steering the team around the park, will be too strong.

Season record: Bulldogs 5 and 4, 2 draws (5th, +28)
Blues 9 and 2 (2nd, +206)
Form: Bulldogs WWLDD
Blues LWWWW
Attacking record: Bulldogs 28, Blues 37 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 25, Blues 18 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 3 Queanbeyan Blues 38 defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 20

The Greenhouse will again be going around the grounds to cover the Canberra Raiders Cup matches whenever we can this season. Watch for our coverage on @TheGHRaiders on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, while we also provide live scores on Twitter via @CanberraCup.

Local league boosted by injection of Raiders players

Six Raiders NSW Cup players are set to inject a spark into the competition as they link up with their local clubs. Albert Hopoate, who has recently agreed to terms with the Raiders on a two-year deal, will be joined by Clay Webb at the Woden Valley Rams. Leo Thompson and Darby Medlyn will head to the West Belconnen Warriors, with Ata Mariota joining the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. Adrian Trevilyan will join the Goulburn Bulldogs.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Gungahlin Bulls hold onto premiership hopes after beating West Belconnen Warriors

The Gungahlin Bulls have held onto their Canberra Raiders Cup premiership hopes after staging a second-half fightback on Sunday. The Bulls were down at half-time before they turned up the heat in defence to stage a 24-16 comeback against the West Belconnen Warriors.

"The most pleasing thing for us was our defence, after we talked about having some intensity in our defence at half-time," Bulls coach Neil Bijorac said.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

Image

There are only four rounds remaining in the regular season of the Canberra Raiders Cup - and it is shaping as two horse race for the 2021 premiership. The Gungahlin Bulls still lead the competition ladder, but the Queanbeyan Blues are looking more and more like premiership favourites. The Blues are just one competition point behind the Bulls - and both teams have 10 victories so far this year.

There's a big break to the rest of the pack, with the Kangaroos, Warriors and Bulldogs fighting it out for a spot in the top four. And that's why this weekend's action is headlined by a clash between the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Goulburn Bulldogs on Saturday at Freebody Oval.

Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan Blues have by far the best attack and defence in the competition. They beat the fifth placed Bulldogs last Sunday, 50-10, at Goulburn - and they've now posted five wins in a row. The Bulldogs were the first to score - with Steven Cummins crossing in the corner. Cummins picked up a double for the home team, after taking an intercept in the second half. But other than that, it was all the Blues. Queanbeyan fullback Matt Parsons was sensational, scoring four tries. He just seems to know when and where to inject himself in attack - and he's the No. 1 try scorer in the competition, with 20 tries to his name.

The Yass Magpies broke a five game losing streak last weekend when they beat the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 32-10, at Greenway. They came close in their previous outing, when they fell short by just two points against the Warriors. But in the end, it was comprehensive against the Bushies. The Magpies led 12-4 at half time. While the Bushrangers reduced the deficit to just two early in the second half, the visitors then scored four unanswered tries to secure the victory. Both fullback Nofoaiga Limoni and hooker Mitchell Turner bagged doubles, while Raiders young gun Jayden Clarkson also crossed for Yass. The win saw Yass jump Tuggeranong into seventh place on the ladder.

It is a much more difficult assignment for the Magpies when they host the Blues this Saturday. The Queanbeyan outfit put on 40 points against Yass earlier this year, back in Round 2. It is very difficult to see the Blues being beaten in this one.

Season record: Magpies 3 and 7, 1 draw (7th, -62)
Blues 10 and 2, (2nd, +246)
Form: Magpies LLLLW
Blues WWWWW
Attacking record: Magpies 25, Blues 38 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 31, Blues 17 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 2 Queanbeyan Blues 40 defeated Yass Magpies 6

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Woden Valley Rams

Both the Bushrangers and Rams were on the wrong end of the scoreboard in Round 14 - and they now fill the last two spots on the competition ladder. The Rams were competitive against the Kangaroos in the first half last week, but didn't score a point in the second. Final scoreline: 52-20.

Back in 2018, these two clubs featured in the Grand Final, with the Rams securing a memorable one point win. They're both clubs with strong roots in their communities, so they'll be back in coming seasons. But 2021 won't be their year. The Rams have just one win this year - against the Bushrangers. So an upset isn't out of the question. But the Bushrangers should be too strong in the southern derby.

Season record: Bushrangers 4 and 8 (8th,-82)
Rams 1 and 9, 1 draw (9th, -174)
Form: Bushrangers LLLWL
Rams LLLDL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 24, Rams 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 30, Rams 35 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 2 Woden Valley Rams 26 defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 22

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Kangaroos traded tries with the Rams in the first half last weekend at Freebody - and went to the break with a narrow 22-20 lead. But the Queanbeyan outfit went on to score five unanswered tries in the second forty. Veteran former Raider, Reece Robinson got a hat trick for the home side. The win saw the Roos jump into third place on the ladder. They've been on a bit of a roll - except when they ran into the Blues in the recent Queanbeyan derby.

There were only a couple of bright spots for the Bulldogs last Sunday - a brace to winger Steven Cummins. Goulburn hasn't had a win since Round 9 against the Bushrangers. Along with a couple of losses, they've recently posted two draws - against the last placed Rams (28-28) and the first placed Bulls (22-22). That's a bit of a difficult form line to interpret. The fifth placed Bulldogs are just two competition points behind the Kangaroos and will be desperate for the win. Their top four hopes hinge on it. The last time these teams met, in Round 2, the Bulldogs were victorious. But the Kangaroos are now a much different team. Expect the Kangaroos to win at home in this clash.

Season record: Kangaroos 6 and 5 (3rd, +60)
Bulldogs 5 and 5, 2 draws (5th, +28)
Form: Kangaroos WWWLW
Bulldogs WLDDL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 30, Bulldogs 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 25, Bulldogs 27 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 2 Goulburn Bulldogs 44 defeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos 30

Gungahlin Bulls V Belconnen United Sharks

While the Gunghalin Bulls have not been as dominant as the Blues in season 2021, they have lost just one match all year. They almost always seem to make the comeback, and to do just enough to win. The West Belconnen Warriors led at half time last Sunday, 16-8. A try to Bulls fullback Tristan Eldridge in the 53rd minute saw Gungahlin draw closer. But it took two tries to winger Rourke O'Sullivan inside the final 10 minutes to deliver the victory for the Bulls.

The Sharks had a loss to the Bushrangers in their last outing, but they've had the bye to recover and put that behind them. They've improved this season, posting four wins. While it is difficult to see them beat the Bulls on Sunday at Gungahlin, I think they'll certainly be competitive. An upset is not beyond them.

Season record: Bulls 10 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +70)
Sharks 4 and 7 (6th, -34)
Form: Bulls LWWDW
Sharks WLLWL
Attacking record: Bulls 33, Sharks 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 27, Sharks 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Gungahlin Bulls 40 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 24

Canberra Raiders Cup: Belconnen United Sharks ready to bite ladder-leading Gungahlin Bulls after long layoff

The sixth-placed Sharks have just four rounds to overhaul the three-point deficit keeping them out of the top four, but a win against the Gungahlin Bulls on Sunday would reignite their finals charge.

"They've got some very good middles, they've obviously got back some of the Raiders boys as well as their backs," Sharks player Sam Wentworth said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos too good for Goulburn Bulldogs

Queanbeyan Kangaroos are one step closer to securing a top-four Canberra Raiders Cup berth after an early second half sin bin to Goulburn winger Steven Cummins opened the floodgates on Saturday at Freebody Oval.

"It was pretty ugly, I don't think we will take much out of that win except for the two points," Roos coach Adam Taylor said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Gungahlin Bulls remain on top after win over Belconnen United Sharks

The Gungahlin Bulls remain on top of the table after a 28-14 win over the Belconnen United Sharks at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval on Saturday. The Sharks threw everything they had at the Bulls in what was a must win match, with the first half a very tight affair. But the home side was able to withstand pressure and score points quickly.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

This round has been cancelled due to the COVID lockdown in the ACT.

The battle for the minor premiership in 2021 Canberra Raiders Cup is effectively down to two teams - the Gungahlin Bulls and Queanbeyan Blues. The Bulls are still one competition point ahead of the Blues - and it all goes on the line this weekend, when the Blues host the Bulls at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. It could well be the Grand Final, come early.

The top four now looks like it is getting close to settled, with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and West Belconnen Warriors grabbing a firm hold of third and fourth place on the ladder. It is probably a foretaste of finals footy for those two teams, as well, when they face each other at Kippax on Saturday. The Goulburn Bulldogs and Belconnen United Sharks are going to find it tough to push their way into the top four after both teams lost on the weekend. The Bulldogs are three competition points adrift of the Warriors, while the Belconnen United Sharks are five points away.

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Third versus fourth. Separated by one competition point on the ladder. Both of these teams will be desperate to win, so as to solidify their place in the finals. The Warriors will host the Kangaroos - and they'll be happy to have the home ground advantage, as the Roos have been in some great form in the second half of the season.

West Belconnen are coming off the bye - and they've had an extra week to put their 24-16 loss to the Bulls behind them. The Warriors led that game at half time, 16-8. A try to Bulls fullback Tristan Eldridge in the 53rd minute saw Gungahlin draw closer. But they held the lead until late in the match. It took two tries to Gungahlin winger Rourke O'Sullivan inside the final 10 minutes to deliver the victory for the Bulls. There's no doubt that the Warriors are competitive in top company.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos were in a bit of a tussle with the Goulburn Bulldogs in the first half last weekend, going to the break with a narrow 18-16 lead. But they ran away with the game in the second forty, taking the game, 42-22. Five eighth Thomas Casey and fullback Kaine Pagura both scored doubles.

The Warriors produced a narrow, two point victory when these two teams met in Round 6 this year, but the Kangaroos have come a fair way since then. The Roos have had one loss in their last six games - to the Blues - while the Warriors have had some ups and downs. I'll tip the Roos in what should be a good contest.

Season record: Warriors 6 and 5, 1 draw 4th, -12)
Kangaroos 7 and 5 (3rd, +80)
Form: Warriors WWLWL
Kangaroos WWLWW
Attacking record: Warriors 22, Kangaroos 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 24, Kangaroos 25 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 6 Warriors 30 defeated Kangaroos 28 at Freebody Oval

Queanbeyan Blues V Gungahlin Bulls

This shapes as the match of the year so far. When these two teams met earlier this season, it was a big defeat for the Blues at Gungahlin. That 20 point margin was certainly unexpected - and I don't expect a repeat this weekend at Seiffert.

The Blues are on a six game winning streak, after suffering a mid season blip - losing, back to back, to the Bulls and then the Warriors. Since then, they've mostly been winning big, and hit 50 in their last two games. They are the No. 1 attacking and defensive team by a good margin. Last weekend, they were pushed hard by the Magpies in the first half. Both teams scored four tries and were tied up, 22-22, at half time. But the Blues asserted control after the break, running out 52-28 winners.

The Bulls can certainly score points too - on average, over 30 points a game. While they're the No. 2 attacking team, defence is their relative weakness. They rank fifth in the competition for fewest points conceded, fourth on a per game basis. However, they almost always do just what they need to, to get a win. They've lost just once all year - big time, to the Kangaroos (60-14) - and recently drew with the Bulldogs, 28-28. They comfortably beat the Sharks last weekend, 28-14.

The Bulls are an exciting young team, and they have really benefited from giving young players their chance to keep developing in the abbreviated CRRL Cup last year. Raiders SG Ball player Connor Williams combines well with the more experienced Tre Holten-Williams in the halves. But recently the Blues have gone to another level with Terry Campese back at the helm, on field. They also have their own excitement machine at fullback, Matt Parsons. He's scored 21 tries this season. I'm tipping the Blues to win at home in what will probably be a high scoring game.

Season record: Blues 11 and 2, (2nd, +270)
Bulls 11 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +84)
Form: Blues WWWWW
Bulls WWDWW
Attacking record: Blues 39, Bulls 33 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 18, Bulls 26 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 6 Bulls 40 defeated Blues 20 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Woden Valley Rams V Yass Magpies

The Rams got their second win of the season last weekend against the Bushrangers at Greenway. The game was level, 22 all, inside the final five minutes. But then Raiders NSW Cup player, and Rams fullback, Albert Hopoate got the match winner, when he bored across the line from dummy half. Final score: 28-22. Hopoate scored a double, as did Rams winger Sam Burge. Raiders NSW Cup forward Ata Mariota, and Raiders juniors Josh Billing and Brigham Moeakiola, scored for the Bushrangers.

The Magpies were in their match with the Blues at half time last Saturday, but couldn't quite go on with it in the second half. They now travel to Phillip on Sunday for this clash. While both these teams are well out of finals contention, this match will be worth watching if only to check the form of some Raiders up and comers. The Magpies have Raiders SG Ball players Jayden Clarkson, Loghan Lewis and Sione Moala in their ranks, while Toby Thorburn and Clay Webb are with the Rams. The numbers point to a win for Yass, but don't rule out the home team.

Season record: Rams 2 and 9, 1 draw (9th, -168)
Magpies 3 and 8, 1 draw (7th, -86)
Form: Rams LLDLW
Magpies LLLWL
Attacking record: Rams 19, Magpies 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 33, Magpies 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 6 Magpies 38 defeated Rams 12 at Walker Park

Goulburn Bulldogs V Belconnen United Sharks

The faint final hopes for these two teams depend on the outcome of this match. The Bulldogs have not have not had a win since their 32-22 victory over the the Bushrangers (32-22) in Round 9. But they have recently come close, in draws with the last placed Rams (28-28) and first placed Bulls (22-22). The Sharks have only had one win in their past five, a 44-22 win over the Magpies. I'll tip a win for the Bulldogs - but it is a game that could go either way.

Season record: Bulldogs 5 and 6, 2 draws (6th, -32)
Sharks 4 and 8 (5th, -48)
Form: Bulldogs LDDLL
Sharks LLWLL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 26, Sharks 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 28, Sharks 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 6 Sharks 22 defeated Bulldogs 16 at Bruce

Canberra Raiders Cup cancelled this weekend due to COVID lockdown

Due to the seven day lockdown starting in the ACT today, and in the interest of limiting movement in and around the Canberra and surrounding regions, all CRRL rugby league competition matches are cancelled for this weekend. In the ACT this also includes all training. In the NSW regions, you must comply with NSW health directions.

State-wide COVID lockdown in New South Wales adds to headaches for Canberra Raiders Cup

Local league administrators spent the last two days working through potential scenarios as a result of the Canberra lockdown, but many of those plans are now redundant given the developing situation in NSW.

"We just have to assess things like most of the other sports and put together some scenario planning around both the ACT and NSW requirements. That was always going to be an issue with us and across the border, and having to align that," CRRL boss Mark Vergano said.

COVID lock down: Regular season of Canberra Raiders Cup deemed to be completed, with the aim now to hold a finals series before the end of September

The Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL) met with its member clubs from the junior and senior competitions yesterday about the on-going lockdown and COVID-19 health situation and the affects these have on the competitions.

The CRRL has as its stated aim, based on the current potential for the lifting of lockdowns in the ACT from September 2, that it will try and complete a finals series with Grand Final, even if that series is truncated, before the end of September. Therefore, the CRRL committee has decided that the regular season matches are now completed and the competition will move into a finals series, if possible.

I'm assuming that now means that the top four will be, if finals are possible:

1. Gungahlin Bulls
2. Queanbeyan Blues
3. Queanbeyan Kangaroos
4. West Belconnen Warriors

Not sure if they award a minor premiership in the circumstances.

‘They abused our girls’: Spectators accused of yelling racial slurs at women’s team

The Katrina Fanning Shield is of significant importance to the women of Canberra’s Boomanulla Raiders, but the competition on 31 July left them defeated in more ways than one. After travelling to the South West Slopes of New South Wales to play against the Harden Worhawks, the team’s high hopes were crushed by a group of men yelling from the sidelines.

“Dirty black dogs! ****! **** off back to Canberra,” they were heard screaming.

Canberra Raiders Regional Rugby League is investigating allegations of "disgusting" racial abuse at a Katrina Fanning Shield game, with the league declaring they are against vilification of any kind.

"The NRL's Code of Conduct and tough love policy clearly stipulates against racism and is very clear about it, and we as a league abide by and utilise those frameworks without question," CRRL boss Mark Vergano said. "The CRRL does not condone racial vilification or discrimination of any kind."

Statement from Canberra Region Rugby League

The Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL), in consultation with its senior member clubs, have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of the senior rugby league season.

This includes all the competitions associated with the Canberra Raiders Cup and George Tooke Shield, including the Katrina Fanning Shield.

Earlier today the ACT government extended the current lockdown until at least the 17th of September with further uncertainty surrounding the NSW regional lockdown, as cases remain high.

CRRL General Manager Mark Vergano stated: “Whilst the CRRL explored every avenue in an attempt to hold a finals series after the premature end to the regular season, there are still active cases in the community of the Delta variant and we all have a duty of care to our players, volunteers and staff to keep them safe.

“The CRRL and the clubs understand this will be of a great disappointment to all the senior players, however there is a social responsibility and a duty of care to ensure that all our great rugby league players and supporters are safe and supportive of the community’s and governments’ attempts, on both sides of the border, to lessen potential virus exposure for everyone,” Vergano said.

The window to complete the season by the end of September was lessening and with the challenges of cross border movement the CRRL and clubs believed this cancellation of the season was the most responsible decision.

The CRRL committee will make a decision on the competition outcomes shortly (i.e. premiership outcomes).

The CRRL would like to thank its players and outstanding volunteers who participate and stage matches every weekend and without whom there would be no competition.

CRRL proposes Harden sanction for alleged Boomanulla abuse

The Harden WorHawks have until Monday to respond to a proposed sanction for the alleged racial abuse of Boomanulla players at a Katrina Fanning Shield game in July. CRRL boss Mark Vergano declined to say what the sanction was only that they'd proposed one.

"The match review committee's has put an initial judgement to Harden and they're considering it," Vergano said.

Harden to fight CRRL sanction for alleged racist comments directed at Boomanulla Raiders players in Katrina Fanning Shield game

Harden will fight the CRRL's proposed sanctions for spectators' alleged racial abuse of an Indigenous women's team at one of their home games at a disciplinary hearing. The time of the hearing was yet to be finalised, but the Riverina club have decided against accepting the CRRL's proposed punishment. It's hoped the hearing will be held this week.

Gungahlin Bulls declared Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiers

With the unfortunate cancellation of the end of the rugby league season for the senior and junior competitions before the finals series, the CRRL committee has considered how to officially recognise the conclusion of the competitions from Under 10s through to Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade.

The CRRL committee has unanimously decided to award the minor premiership to all teams that were leading their respective competitions at the time of the shutdown. Teams that were equal on points or percentage (applicable to juniors) are deemed joint winners. The Gungahlin Bulls and Harden Hawks clubs have been awarded the Club Championship in the Canberra Raiders Cup and George Tooke Shield respectively.

The McIntyre Medal and associated awards will be presented once the developing situation is clearer. This could be via a scaled down awards ceremony in person or a virtual event.

Harden Hawks hit with suspended $2,000 fine for spectators' racial abuse of Indigenous Boomanulla Raiders players

Harden have been hit with a suspended $2000 fine and will have to undergo cultural awareness training for failing to adequately deal with spectators who racially abused Indigenous players at one of their Katrina Fanning Shield home games this season. An independent disciplinary hearing upheld the CRRL's proposed sanctions in a marathon session on Wednesday night.
