Blues and Kangaroos set for fiery Canberra Raiders Cup Queanbeyan derby

Kangaroos coach Adam Taylor has lit the fuse for an explosive Queanbeyan derby, after telling his forwards to target the unbeaten Blues' pack in Saturday's clash at Seiffert Oval.

"I think everyone this year has laid down for the Blues," Taylor said. "They look up and see a star-studded side and the game is over before they take the field.

Blues stay unbeaten after prevailing in Queanbeyan derby thriller

The Blues prevailed by two points in a bruising Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval on Saturday, which left Kangaroos coach Adam Taylor confident his side could challenge the ladder leaders for the premiership.

"It's good to get a good gauge, they're the top dog of the comp and we're not far off them, we'll get confidence out of that," Taylor said."It's not very often you have a loss and you can cop it, but we'll cop that one, a few things went against us.

Gungahlin Bulls make last-gasp charge to pinch win from Goulburn Bulldogs

The Goulburn Bulldogs held on to a two-point lead for 15 minutes, but it wasn't enough. And their winger Steven Cummins scored four tries, but that wasn't enough either. Instead it was the Gungahlin Bulls who came away with a last-gasp 38-34 victory in Goulburn on Sunday - through a try to Dean Aylott.

Gungahlin Bulls 38 (Tries: R O'Sullivan 3, D Aylott 2, K Kenny, T Holten-Williams; Goals: L Thomson 5) d Goulburn City Bulldogs 34 (Tries: S Cummins 4, V Winnel, T Greenwood; Goals: I Walker 5)

The City vs Country U16/U18 criteria in selecting the teams will need some further work if this fixture continues in the future. Junior clubs should be a factor not which HM/SG Ball side they represent.

Maybe they need some Origin rules.

City men turn it on against Country

City halves Zac Greene and Kamren Cryer have helped orchestrate a 38-12 win over Country in the Men’s Open Age match at Collegians Sporting Complex in Wollongong today.

Greene scored a try and set up another in the first half to help set up a 22-0 lead at halftime while Cryer stepped up with three try assists in the second half to snuff out any hope of a Country fightback.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 6 Preview

Image

Round 6 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top of the table clash between the Bulls and Blues at Gungahlin this Saturday.

Gungahlin Bulls V Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan Blues and Gunghalin Bulls are the only undefeated teams after the opening five rounds of the 2021 Canberra Raiders Cup. And on Saturday, they will be aiming to take top spot on the ladder in their own right. The Blues are currently running first, courtesy of their very healthy positive points differential. They've generally been winning big, while the Bulls have had some close shaves - producing a couple of narrow, last gasp wins. Both teams can score points - but the main difference between the two teams is in defence. The Queanbeyan powerhouse has conceded only 66 points - 13 points per match. That's a defensive record that NRL teams would be happy to have.

The Bulls are coming off a 38-34 win over the Bulldogs at Goulburn in Round 5. The Bulls trailed by two points with two minutes left on the clock, before a kick from half Tre Holten-Williams to the corner, produced the match winner for winger Dean Aylott. The Bulldogs led 22-16 and would be ruing their lost opportunity for a win at home.

The Blues had their own close shave in their last outing, producing a narrow 24-22 victory over the Kangaroos in the Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval. The Blues led 14-6 at the half-time break, but the Kangaroos took a two point lead in the second half - after tries to lock Jesse Dent and fullback Kaine Pagura. The Blues kicked away again through four pointers to Bryce Lee and prop Richard Holani. A try to Alifelti Ngahe saw the Blues' lead cut to two, setting up a desperate final 10 minutes. However the Blues were able to hold on. Lee and Holani both scored doubles for Queanbeyan.

It should be a first class contest, but it's hard to go past Terry Campese's Blues to maintain their unbeaten run.

Season record: Bulls 5 and 0 (1st, +148)
Blues 5 and 0 (2nd, +34)
Form: Bulls WWWWW
Blues WWWWW
Attacking record: Bulls 36 points, Blues 43 scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 29 points, Blues 13 conceded per match

Yass Magpies V Woden Valley Rams

The Yass Magpies host the Woden Valley Rams at Walker Park in Round 6 - in a clash between fifth and eighth. Both teams have only won one match so far. The Magpies suffered a big 40-6 loss against the Blues in their season opener. But they have been right in their subsequent contests. They got a last gasp 42-40 win over the Bushrangers, lost by just two points to the Bulls at Gungahlin and drew 30-30 with the West Belconnen Warriors in their last match.

The Magpies were in a position to beat the Warriors, leading 30-22 with six minutes to go. But then veteran Warriors forward Josh Ayers crashing through for a try, with Bayley Graham converting. And then Yass conceded a penalty right in front of the posts - producing the draw.

The Rams' only win came in Round 2 against the Bushrangers at Phillip, but other than that it's been all losses - to the Bulls, Kangaroos and Warriors. They are coming off a Round 5 bye, so they've had two weeks off - and should be fresh. This one might come down to the home ground advantage. Walker Park is a tough ground for the visiting teams.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 2, 1 drawn (5th, -34)
Rams 1 and 3 (8th, -38)
Form: Magpies BLWLD
Rams LWLLB
Attacking record: Magpies 28, Rams 18 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 37, Rams 28 points conceded per match

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V West Belconnen Warriors

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos didn't have the best of starts to the 2021 season, but they've recently been playing themselves into some form. They produced back to back wins over the Rams (26-12) and Sharks (24-18), before suffering a narrow loss to the ladder leading Blues (24-22). They host the fourth placed Warriors at Freebody Oval in Round 6. But the Warriors only have one win and a draw, to their name this year - and sit above the Kangaroos due to two points from a bye. This could be a pretty close contest, but again, I'll go with the home team in this one.

Season record: Kangaroos 2 and 3 (6th, -20)
Warriors 1 and 2, I draw (4th, +8)
Form: Kangaroos LLWWD
Warriors LBLWD
Attacking record: Kangaroos 23, Warriors 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 27, Warriors 26 points conceded per match

Belconnen United Sharks V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Sharks are the only team that is still win-less this year, and now host the fourth placed Goulburn Bulldogs at the old Raiders HQ in Round 6. I feel a bit sorry for the Sharks, in that they have been in the contest in most of their matches, but haven't been able to do quite enough to get a win. They lost by just six points to the Bushrangers in their last outing, scoring three late tries.

The Bulldogs opened their year with back to back wins, but in their past two matches, they've been beaten by the top two teams - the Blues and Bulls. Despite that, they were just two minutes short of a win over Gungahlin in their last appearance. Expect them to be too strong for the Sharks in this match.

Season record: Sharks 0 and 4 (9th, -68)
Bulldogs 2 and 2 (4th, 0)
Form: Sharks LLBLL
Bulldogs WWLBL
Attacking record: Sharks 20, Bulldogs 32 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 37, Bulldogs 32 points conceded per match

Gungahlin Bulls youngster Richie Allan Jr proud to represent Indigenous heritage

Six weeks ago, Richard Allan Jr was tasked with designing the Gungahlin Bulls jersey for Canberra Raiders Cup Indigenous round. Since then Allan has already been hired by multiple organisations to create designs to honour the culture and heritage of the Ngunnawal people.

"It has pretty special because it came out of nowhere - one day I'm doing dot paintings, the next I'm creating designs for different teams and schools," Allan said.

MATCH REPORT: Gungahlin Bulls remain undefeated in top of the table clash

The Gungahlin Bulls hold a six-game winning streak after defeating the Queanbeyan Blues 40-20 in Saturday afternoon's Allan Family Shield clash.

It was the Queanbeyan Blues who looked to be dominating at first on Saturday afternoon, containing the Gungahlin Bulls well inside their half as they attacked. But the momentum shifted quickly, which saw the Bulls find space out on their left edge with a 40-metre run by winger Dean Aylott in the ninth minute.

Gungahlin Bulls show pride in Indigenous jersey

It was an important win for the Gungahlin Bulls. Not just because it was the top-of-the-table clash, between the only two undefeated teams in the competition.

But because of the Indigenous jersey they were wearing. And they did it proud. Running over the top of the Queanbeyan Blues 40-20 at Gungahlin on Saturday.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 7 Preview

Image

Round 7 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top four clash between the West Belconnen Warriors and Queanbeyan Blues.

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Blues

The third placed Warriors host the second placed Blues at Kippax this Saturday. The Warriors opened their season with two losses - one, a very narrow, last gasp loss to the ladder leading Bulls in Round 2. Since then, they've been undefeated. They first beat the Rams and then drew with the Magpies. Last weekend, they produced a narrow 30-28 victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval.

The match was tied up at 24-24 with 20 minutes left on the lock - but that deadlock was broken by a try from Warriors second-rower Josh Ayers. Kangaroos centre Mitchell Sullivan hit back with a try in the corner with two minutes remaining - but the home team was unable to convert and the Warriors held on for the victory. The experienced Ayers produced a double.

The Queanbeyan Blues had been undefeated until they travelled to Gungahlin last weekend for a meeting with the Bulls. But their five game winnning streak came to an end, with the home team taking out the match, 40-20. The Bulls play some exciting, unpredictable football - due in large part to the halves pairing of Tre and Jordan Holten-Williams. When you add in ball playing lock Zac Patch and fullback Tristan Eldridge, you've got a winning formula.

The Bulls started fast, going to a 14-6 lead after half an hour. The Blues fought back with some smart attack of their own in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Tries to Queanbeyan's Tyrel Kimori-Edmond and half Blake Murray gave the Blues a 16-14 lead at the break. However, the Bulls dominated the second half. The only joy for the Blues was a try to Raiders SG Ball representative, Michael Asomua, who was making his debut for the club. Tristan Eldridge and winger Rourke O'Sullivan both finished with doubles for the Bulls.

"They were just too good for us in the end. They were young and enthusiastic and outplayed us and showed us you have to turn up each and every week," Queanbeyan Blues coach Terry Campese told The Canberra Times.

The Bulls and the Blues are in a class of their own at present - with the five teams below them on the ladder having posted just two wins. The Warriors and Magpies have their noses in front of the rest, due to their Round 5 draw. Remarkably, the Warriors are just one of three teams with a positive points differential - and that's the thing that has them ahead of the Magpies.

Despite their loss to the Bulls, the Blues still have the best attack and defence in the league. So it'll be a tough assignment for the Warriors on Saturday. Based on all the numbers, I'll have to tip the Blues. But the Warriors certainly have a shot at an upset.

Season record: Warriors 2 and 2, 1 draw (3rd, +10)
Blues 5 and 1 (2nd, +128)
Form: Warriors LLWDW
Blues WWWWL
Attacking record: Warriors 28 points, Blues 39 scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 26 points, Blues 18 conceded per match

Woden Valley Rams V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Woden Valley Rams have dropped to last place on the competition table, after suffering their third straight loss in Round 6 at Walker Park. The Magpies were far too strong for the Rams last Saturday, running out 38-12 victors. The Rams led 6-4 just before half time, but a try to second rower Shaun Davis delivered a 10-6 lead at the break. That was the start of a 32 point avalanche for the Magpies. While Rams lock Sean Maloney got his second try of the afternoon with 15 minutes remaining, it was all too late by then.

The Bulldogs are also on a three game losing streak - after winning their opening two matches of the season. Last weekend, Goulburn travelled to Belconnen Oval and were upset by the last placed Sharks. The Bulldogs led 16-14 with 25 minutes remaining. But a double to Sharks five-eighth Matthew Woolnough produced a 22-16 lead for the Belconnen outfit with just over five minutes remaining - a lead the Bulldogs were unable to dent in the final stages.

The Rams will have the advantage of playing this one on home turf - and neither side is in good form. But the Bulldogs might have a bit too much firepower for the Rams this week.

Season record: Rams 1 and 4 (9th, -64)
Bulldogs 2 and 3 (5th, -6)
Form: Rams LWLLL
Bulldogs WWLLL
Attacking record: Rams 17, Bulldogs 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 30, Bulldogs 30 points conceded per match

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Gungahlin Bulls

The Gungahlin Bulls moved into first place on the ladder with their victory over the Blues last Saturday - and they are the only undefeated team after the opening six rounds. They've had some close shaves, but they sure have been able to turn on the attack when it is needed. They rank second in the league in both attack and defence. The Bushrangers are coming off the bye - and a 30-24 victory over the Sharks at Belconnen Oval in Round 5. While this game is on foreign turf for the Bulls, all the numbers point to a Bulls win.

Season record: Bushrangers 2 and 3 (6th, -30)
Bulls 6 and 0 (1st, +54)
Form: Bushrangers WLLLW
Bulls WWWWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 27, Bulls 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 33, Bulls 27 points conceded per match

Belconnen United Sharks V Yass Magpies

The Sharks had their first win of the season last weekend against the Bulldogs - and that was enough to get them off the bottom of the ladder. Both the Sharks and Rams have one win each, but the Sharks have a slightly better points differential - two points better - but that's all it takes.

Both the Magpies and Sharks have been strugglers in recent seasons, but the Magpies find themselves in the top four after a win last week over the Rams. Since being beaten by a big margin by the Blues in their season opener, the Magpies have been very competitive. They got a two point win over the Bushrangers in Round 3, lost by just two points to the Bulls, and then drew with the Warriors. The Sharks have also been playing some pretty good football at times, so this won't be an easy contest for Yass. I'll go with the Magpies, but don't be surprised if the Sharks put back to back wins together.

Season record: Sharks 1 and 4 (8th, -62)
Magpies 2 and 2, 1 draw (4th, 0)
Form: Sharks LLLLW
Magpies LWLDW
Attacking record: Sharks 20, Magpies 30 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 32, Magpies 32 points conceded per match

Woden Valley Rams hopeful of kicking form slump against Goulburn Bulldogs

Woden captain Steven Ferry has challenged his cellar dwellers to take on "more individual accountability" ahead of Saturday's clash with the Goulburn City Bulldogs.

"It's definitely a big game for us," Ferry said. "We've dropped a few too many games in a row so it's really important we get back on the right track with a win this weekend.

Accidently helping Belconnen United Sharks to back-to-back wins

PK, or Paakofi Amponn-Nyamekye for long, turned up to Belconnen's training by mistake. He'd gone to O'Connor to train with Belconnen United and joined in with his soon-to-be Sharks teammates thinking it was soccer.

But six games into his senior career and the mathematics tutor scored a brace in Belconnen's thrilling 30-24 victory over the Yass Magpies at Bruce on Saturday.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Preview

Image

Round 8 of the Canberra Raiders Cup... and everyone is asking: Who can beat the Gunghalin Bulls? Will it be the Queanbeyan Kangaroos this week?

Yass Magpies V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Magpies will be hoping to push their way back into the top four when they host the Goulburn Bulldogs at Walker Park on Saturday. It was something of an upset when the Magpies lost, 30-24, to the Sharks last week. The Shark led 18-4 at the 20 minute mark, after the home team produced three early tries to winger Paakofi Amponn-Nyamekye, half Joshua Pokoney and winger Jonathan Fangaiuiha. A try to Raiders SG Ball star Caleb Esera started a comeback for the Magpies. Further tries to Bayley Maher and Shaun Davis in the opening 10 minutes of the first half saw Yass take a 20-18 lead.

At the 63rd minute, the Sharks went the length of the field, with Amponn-Nyamekye getting his second try. And the home team went further into the lead when Manase Kaho crossed with six minutes left on the clock. Yass second rower Shaun Davis secured his double just before full time, but in the end, the Magpies fell short.

The Bulldogs broke a three game losing streak when they defeated the Rams, 36-20, last Saturday at Phillip. The scores were level, at 20 all, with just under 25 minutes remaining. But it was all the Bulldogs in the final quarter of the match - with Matt Sherer, Dillon Rota and Steven Cummins all scoring for the visitors.

There is not much separating these two teams, but the Bulldogs have slightly better attacking and defensive records so far this season. Still it is always a difficult assignment for the visiting team at Walker Park. It should be a close contest.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 3, 1 draw (5th, -14)
Bulldogs 3 and 3 (4th, +10)
Form: Magpies WLDWL
Bulldogs WLLLW
Attacking record: Magpies 29, Bulldogs 30 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 31, Bulldogs 28 points conceded per match

Gungahlin Bulls V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Gungahlin Bulls are on a seven game winning streak, still undefeated this season, and sit on the top of the ladder - four competition points clear of the their nearest rivals. This week they host the Queanbeyan Kangaroos - a battle between first and sixth on the ladder.

The Bulls are coming off a 36-20 victory over the Bushrangers at Greenway last Saturday. It was a close affair in the first half, with the Bulls leading 14-12 at the break. The Bushies went to a 16-14 lead nine minutes into the second half, courtesy of a try to second rower Patrick Birch. But the Bulls took control with three tries in a row, to Tre Holten-Williams, Rourke O'Sullivan and Deakin Bright. That gave the visitors a 28-16 lead with just under 15 minutes remaining. Bushrangers winger Jayden Pollard got his second try of the day in the 75th minute, but the Bulls had the last word when winger Dean Aylott crossed in the corner.

The Kangaroos should be fresh after their Round 7 bye. They suffered two point losses in their last two matches - against the Queanbeyan Blues (24-22) and West Belconnen Warriors (30-28). All the numbers point to a win for the Bulls in this one, but surely the Bulls have to stumble some time. They've come close this season, but the exciting attacking team have always found just enough to win.

Season record: Bulls 6 and 0 (1st, +54)
Kangaroos 2 and 4 (6th, -22)
Form: Bulls WWWWW
Kangaroos LWWLL
Attacking record: Bulls 36, Kangaroos 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 26, Kangaroos 27 points conceded per match

Belconnen United Sharks V Woden Valley Rams

This is a battle between the two teams at the bottom of the ladder. But the Sharks won't be feeling down in the dumps, after getting back to back wins over the past two weeks. It has been good to see a team that has suffered such long losing streaks getting some success. Unfortunately for the Rams, they are now on a four game losing streak. The Rams have worst attacking record in the competition and rank third for most points conceded. That's pretty painful for a club that won the premiership just a few seasons ago. This match could go either way, but based on recent form, I'd have to pick the Sharks at home in this one.

Season record: Sharks 2 and 4 (8th, -56)
Rams 1 and 5 (9th, -80)
Form: Sharks LLLWW
Rams WLLLL
Attacking record: Sharks 22, Rams 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 31, Rams 31 points conceded per match

West Belconnen Warriors V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The West Belconnen Warriors sit in third position on the ladder after beating the Queanbeyan Blues, 22-18, in a top four clash at Kippax last Saturday. It very much looked like the Blues were headed for a victory, when they led by eight points with eight minutes remaining. But Warriors winger scored a double in the final stages to give the home team an exciting victory. They now host the seventh placed Bushrangers - who have just one win in their past five matches. The Warriors have taken some time to warm into the season, but at this stage, they're in better form than the Bushrangers. I'll tip the home team in this match.

Season record: Warriors 3 and 2, 1 draw (3rd, +14)
Bushrangers 2 and 4 (7th, -46)
Form: Warriors LWDWW
Bushrangers LLLWL
Attacking record: Warriors 27 points, Bushrangers 26 scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 25 points, Bushrangers 33 conceded per match

Queanbeyan Kangaroos bring down Gungahlin Bulls

Kangaroos coach Adam Taylor was unhappy with his young side's defensive efforts a fortnight ago so they spent their bye on the training track. Tackling. And it led to them bringing down the previously undefeated Gungahlin Bulls, running rampant in the 60-14 victory at Gungahlin Enclosed on Saturday.

"Our defensive effort against West Belconnen was horrible ... and we had the week off the following week and we just busted our guts defensively," he said.

Undermanned Tuggeranong Bushrangers' turning point

The Bushies fought for 60 minutes with a player sent off and held on for a 24-22 victory over the West Belconnen Warriors at Holt on Sunday.

"I put it down to a turning point. We had a bit of faith in our structure and our system, and in each other, and I think that's all it really was. The boys just believed in each other and that's how we got the result," Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka said.

Looks like JJ Clarkson has recovered from his injury. Very pleasing. Hope he has a big few weeks to get back into the running for a QLD U19 berth.

Another familiar name from QLD looks to have joined one of the A-Grade squads. Not sure if signed to the Raiders but good to see.

Clarkson a late inclusion for the Magpies.

On the familiar name from Queensland, do you mean Steven Numambo? He looked very good on the weekend.

I have seen someone on Facebook indicating the Raiders have signed Aiden Kawiri Kusu... but not seen any other confirmation. At least we know he's in town and playing for the Woden Valley Rams. Solid looking winger.
