2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Preview

Image

In Round 9 of the Canberra Raiders Cup, the Sharks have a shot at jumping into the top four, if they can get their fourth win in row when they meet the Warriors at Kippax in the Belconnen derby.

Woden Valley Rams V Queanbeyan Blues

The last placed Woden Valley Rams are on a five game losing streak - and will be hoping to break that when they host the Queanbeyan Blues at Phillip on Saturday. Their last win - and only win of the season so far - was two months ago, when they defeated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in Round 2. The Blues are coming off back to back losses, after they opened the season with a five game winning streak. They suffered a big 40-20 loss to the Bulls in Round 6, and a last gasp, 22-18, loss to the Warriors in Round 7. The Blues still have the best attack and defence in the competition on a per game basis - and no team has conceded fewer points. So coach Ken Nagas and his team will have their hands full in this one. If you get to this game, keep an eye out for a couple of Raiders SG Ball premiership players. Hooker Toby Thorburn and five eighth Mitchell Spencer are currently turning out for the Rams, while Michael Asomua - who recently made his Raiders NSW Cup debut - has linked with the Blues.

Season record: Rams 1 and 6 (9th, -102)
Blues 5 and 2 (2nd, +124)
Form: Rams LLLLL
Blues WWWLL
Attacking record: Rams 17, Blues 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 31, Blues 18 points conceded per match

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Yass Magpies

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos produced a huge 60-14 win over Gungahlin Bulls in their last outing. The Bulls were previously undefeated this year, so the dimensions of that win were certainly unexpected. But their form line has been pretty good, when you consider that their only losses in their past five games have been by two points - to the Blues (24-22) and the Warriors (30-28).

Kangaroos winger Steven Numambo scored four tries - and was very impressive. Still just 20 years old, he was a part of the Kirwan High team that won the 2019 National Schoolboy Cup and has played for the Townsville Blackhawks. Numambo was named in the Raiders' NSW Cup squad at the start of the year, but is yet to get his chance in that grade. But if he keeps that up, he'll be coming into consideration. Five eighth Tom Casey - also part of the Raiders NSW Cup squad - and Kaine Pagura got themselves doubles. Casey originally hails from the Ipswich Jets, was part of the Broncos' development program, and also spent time with the Townsville Blackhawks.

Coach Adam Taylor told The Canberra Times that the win was built on the Roos' defensive work during the week of their bye.

"We worked on everything defensively and around the ruck, and it came to fruition today. I would've given them the week off, but after the way we played against West Belconnen I said, 'There's no way you're getting a day off. We're going to be training three times this week', and we trained on the Saturday" Taylor said.

The Yass Magpies have fallen to eighth place on the ladder after back to back losses to the Bulldogs (34-18) and Sharks (30-24). They've only had one win in their past five matches, but they came close to a win twice - losing to the Bulls by just two points (36-34) and drawing with the Warriors (30-30). It's very difficult to go past the Kangaroos on home turf this week.

The Magpies have a few players to watch from the Raiders SG Ball premiership team - forwards Caleb Esera, Jayden Clarkson and Loghan Lewis. Esera and Clarkson both scored tries in the loss to the Bulldogs and both are clearly future NRL players, in my view. Clarkson is not playing this week, but Raiders junior half, Sione Moala, makes his return from the injury he suffered in the SG Ball Grand Final in this game.

Season record: Kangaroos 3 and 4 (5th, +24)
Magpies 2 and 4, 1 draw (8th, -30)
Form: Kangaroos WWLLW
Magpies LDWLL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 29, Magpies 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 25, Magpies 32 points conceded per match

West Belconnen Warriors V Belconnen United Sharks

The Belconnen United Sharks are on a three game winning streak - having beaten Bulldogs (22-16), Magpies (30-24) and the Rams (34-12). The Sharks didn't win a single match in the 2018 season - and won only six in 2019. If they can beat the Warriors at Kippax this week, they will jump the fourth placed West Belconnen club on the ladder - and could end up in the top four themselves.

Former Raiders forward Shaun Fensom gives the Sharks experience at lock. They've also been bolstered by the likes of prop Khalil Rahme, second rower Sam Wentworth and outside back Manase Kaho - who are all part of the Raiders NSW Cup squad. Kaho scored four tries in the win over the Rams - but he won't be available this week. He's been promoted to the Raiders NSW Cup side. The Sharks are being steered around by half Josh Pokoney, who was part of the Raiders SG Ball squad, while fullback Livai Kaloutolu is also a quality player. Kaloutolu started the year in Canberra's SG Ball team and hopefully, he can find his way back into the Raiders' system.

The Warriors are coming off a 24-22 loss to a 12 man Tuggeranong Bushrangers outfit in Round 8. The Bushies lost centre Wez Alexander-McCarthy at around the 20 minute mark. Despite that, they established a 24-10 lead in the second half. before a late comeback from the Warriors fell short. Warriors coach Matt Gafa was disappointed in his team's performance.

"We learnt a few lessons out of that game. We've got a lot of young guys and they're going to learn what first-grade football's all about ... you've got to have the right attitude and you've got to be prepared to do the tough stuff," he told The Canberra Times.

This should be a good contest. While this game is being played at Kippax, I'm going to tip the Sharks to produce something of an upset and keep on with their winning ways.

Season record: Warriors 3 and 3, 1 draw (4th, +12)
Sharks 3 and 4 (6th, -34)
Form: Warriors WDWWL
Sharks LLWWW
Attacking record: Warriors 26 points, Sharks 23 scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 25 points, Sharks 28 conceded per match

Goulburn Bulldogs V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Goulburn Bulldogs now sit in third place on the ladder after back to back wins over the Rams (36-20) and the Magpies (34-18). Captain coach Tyson Greenwood scored three tries against the Magpies in Round 8, while his co-captain/coach Jesse Martin got one. Martin has been outstanding for the Dogs this season, and shares first place on the McIntyre Medal leaderboard, with Bulls half Tre Holten-Williams. Watch for Raiders NSW Cup players Joe Roberts at hooker and Sila Titiuti at prop this week.

The Bushrangers broke a four game losing streak with their two point win over the Warriors in Round 8. It was a gutsy effort, playing with 12 men for 60 minutes and holding out a fast finishing West Belconnen team. Winger Jayden Pollard and second rower Jordan Martin got doubles. Martin is another player who has come through the Raiders junior system, and was named as part of the NSW Cup squad at the start of the year. The Bushies have some other young Raiders to watch: fullback Jack Sandford and centre Josh Billing from the SG Ball premiership winning team. Prop Niu Mariota started the year in Canberra's SG Ball team too. He's an outstanding player, and hopefully he'll be back in Raiders colours next year.

While the Bushrangers showed a lot of courage to get the win last week, form lines dictate my tip in this one: Bulldogs at home.

Season record: Bulldogs 4 and 3 (3rd, +26)
Bushrangers 3 and 4 (7th, -44)
Form: Bulldogs LLLWW
Bushrangers LLLLW
Attacking record: Bulldogs 30, Bushrangers 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 27, Bushrangers 32 points conceded per match

Kiwi recruit Nofoaiga Limoni finds a happy home in Yass

There are not many similarities when comparing Yass to Auckland, but Nofoaiga Limoni sees this as a positive. The different environment has allowed him to focus on his football.

"There is a lot to work on, but we are still moving players around in the paddock and into what position they should be playing," he said. "We're slowly gelling, and hopefully, we'll get better results."

Queanbeyan Kangaroos go back to basics to thump Yass Magpies

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Adam Taylor told his team in the sheds at halftime to keep things simple and it paid off, after they kept the Yass Magpies scoreless in the second half. Despite the 16-16 stalemate at the first whistle, it was a very different score line at the end of the second, with the Roos claiming a 46-16 win.

Bayley Graham helps West Belconnen Warriors reign in Canberra Raiders Cup derby

Warriors halfback Bayley Graham scored two second half tries to orchestrate a 24-18 Canberra Raiders Cup win at Kippax Oval on Sunday. Graham converted both of his own tries to put the result beyond doubt and guide his side into the top four after nine rounds.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 10 Preview

Image

We're halfway through the Canberra Raiders Cup season - with Round 10 headlined by a top four clash between the West Belconnen Warriors and the Goulburn Bulldogs. Fortunately, matches can proceed this weekend, after the NSWRL gave regional competitions the all clear to push ahead - despite mounting COVID concerns and the lockdown in Sydney forcing the cancellation of the NSW Cup for the next two weeks.

Woden Valley Rams V Gungahlin Bulls

The last placed Rams host the first placed Bulls at Phillip on Saturday. The Rams are on a six game losing streak - and were defeated by the Blues, 34-22, in their last outing. In contrast, the Bulls opened the season with a seven game winning streak. One ray of hope for the Rams is that the Bulls lost, big time, to the Kangaroos, 60-14, in their most recent match, back in Round 8. The Bulls took out the match played between the two clubs, 32-22. It is difficult to see the Rams producing an upset in this one.

Season record: Rams 1 and 7 (9th, -114)
Bulls 7 and 1 (1st, +24)
Form: Rams LLLLL
Bulls WWWWL
Attacking record: Rams 17, Bulls 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 32, Bulls 31 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Bulls 32 defeated Rams 22

West Belconnen Warriors V Goulburn Bulldogs

We should see the best match of the round at Kippax, when the third placed Bulldogs travel to Kippax for a clash with the Warriors.

The Warriors produced a 24-18 win over the Sharks in Round 9 - despite the Sharks heading to half time with a 12-8 lead. The scores were all locked up at 12 all, with 15 minutes remaining. But after Sharks forward Harrison Leadbitter was sin-binned, Warriors half Bayley Graham took control, scoring a double. A Sharks try to five eighth Matt Woolnough in the final minute narrowed the gap - Woolnough's second of the game - but by then it was all too late.

Warriors coach Matt Gafa was particularly pleased with his team's defensive efforts.

"There were some great tackles, the boys were getting underneath them. It was pleasing, especially coming off a bye, to get a win and to defend that way," Gafa told The Canberra Times.

The Bulldogs are on a three game winning streak, after their form had taken a bit of a dip. They've since posted wins over the Rams (36-20), Magpies (34-18) and Bushrangers (32-22). In their last match, the Bulldogs led the Bushrangers 32-10 with around 10 minutes remaining - before they conceded three late tries to Tuggeranong. It wasn't enough, but the late lapse will concern Bulldogs co-coaches Tyson Greenwood and Jesse Martin. Centre Dillon Rota and prop Silafono Titiuti both scored doubles for Goulburn.

This should be a great clash, with both teams producing a good run of recent form. The Warriors will have the home ground advantage, but the numbers all point to a Bulldogs win.

Season record: Warriors 4 and 3, 1 draw (4th, +18)
Bulldogs 5 and 3 (3rd, +36)
Form: Warriors DWWLW
Bulldogs LLWWW
Attacking record: Warriors 26 points, Bulldogs 31 scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 24 points, Bulldogs 26 conceded per match
Last meeting: Bulldogs 28 defeated Warriors 20

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos are on a high, having produced big wins in their past two matches. In Round 8 they claimed a very big scalp in style, beating the ladder leading Bulls, 60-14 at Gungahlin. And in their last match, they beat the eighth placed Magpies, 46-16. Mark down the name of winger Steven Numambo. He has scored seven tries in the Roos' past two games. The Bushrangers defeated the Kangaroos at Greenway in Round 1 - but their form since has been variable at best. They're coming off a 32-22 loss to the Bulldogs - but the contest was not as close as the scoreline indicated. The Kangaroos should be too good at home in this one. If you can't get to Freebody Oval, this is this weekend's free live streamed match on Bar TV Sports.

Season record: Kangaroos 4 and 4 (5th, +54)
Bushrangers 3 and 5, (7th, -54)
Form: Kangaroos WLLWW
Bushrangers LWLWL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 31, Bushrangers 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 24, Bushrangers 32 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Bushrangers 36 defeated Kangaroos 12

Belconnen United Sharks V Queanbeyan Blues

Coming into their last match, the Belconnen United Sharks had strung three wins together - beating the Bulldogs (22-16), Magpies (30-24) and Rams (34-12). It is probably a long time since they've won three in a row. But they couldn't quite keep it going against the Warriors in Round 9 - losing, in the end, by six points. They were certainly right in that contest. This week, they host the Queanbeyan Blues at the old Raiders HQ at Bruce.

The Blues opened the year with a five game winning streak, but they then produced a couple of disappointing losses to the Bulls (40-20) and the Warriors (22-18). They steadied the ship in Round 9, producing a 34-22 win over the last placed Rams. The second placed Blues have the best attack and defence in the competition, but a win is not beyond the Sharks in this contest. They have some good young talent coming through, and this could well be an upset.

Season record: Sharks 3 and 5 (6th, -40)
Blues 6 and 2 (2nd, +136)
Form: Sharks LWWWL
Blues WWLLW
Attacking record: Sharks 23, Blues 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 28, Blues 19 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Blues 52 defeated Sharks 12

Woden Rams to wear Indigenous jersey in Canberra Raiders Cup clash against Gungahlin Bulls

As an Indigenous Woden Valley Rams junior, Lachie Eveston has a special feeling about pulling on the jersey against the Gungahlin Bulls this weekend.

"It's actually the first Indigenous jersey I will be pulling on, cause I haven't actually played in a knockout or anything like that so it's going to be a very special moment for myself and my family," Eveston said.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos survive late comeback to win three in a row

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have defeated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 20-14 at Freebody Oval on Saturday in Round 10 of the Canberra Raiders Cup. Queanbeyan had a 20-6 lead early in the second half, before Joshua Billing and Patrick Birch did their best to mount a comeback for the Bushies. Queanbeyan’s defence did just enough to hold on to get the win, keeping alive their quest for a spot in the finals.

Gungahlin Bulls fly out of the blocks to knock off the Woden Valley Rams

Joshua Allen and Jackson Owen played their first games of the season and they slotted seamlessly into a physical pack that led the visitors to an emphatic 46-10 victory over the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip on Saturday.

"We had two big bodies in Josh Allen and Jackson Owen back for us today and when we put them on that sort of changed the game a little bit too," Bulls coach Neil Bijorac said.

2021 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Preview

Image

The Gungahlin Bulls still sit on top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder as we move into Round 11 of the competiton. They're four competition points ahead of their nearest rivals, the Queanbeyan Blues - and having lost just one game all season, the Bulls are now shaping as title favourites. This weekend's action is headlined by the top four clash between the Queanbeyan Blues and West Belconnen Warriors at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

Yass Magpies V Belconnen United Sharks

The Magpies, coming off a bye, host the Sharks on Saturday at Walker Park. They're on a three game losing streak - having been defeated by the Sharks (30-24), Bulldogs (34-18) and Kangaroos (46-16). The Sharks have recently produced three wins in a row - and that'd be the first time that's happened in quite a while. But they've since suffered back to back losses to the Warriors (24-18) and Blues (30-24). It is not all bad news, as the Sharks were competitive in both games, against teams currently in the top four.

In their clash with the Blues, the Sharks went to the break all tied up at 12 all - and a John Papalii try two minutes into the second half gave them an 18-12 lead. But two quick tries to Blues hooker Josh Mitchell and lock Isiah Latu saw the visitors move six points ahead at the 50 minute mark. The Blues hit 30 with around 10 minutes remaining after a try to Julian Tupou. Sharks second rower Nukurua Ngere crossed in the dying stages of the match, producing the 30-24 final scoreline.

A visit to Walker Park in the middle of winter is always tough, but the Sharks won the clash between the two sides in Round 7. They could well get the victory in this match as well.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 6, 1 draw (8th, -60)
Sharks 3 and 6 (6th, -46)
Form: Magpies DWLLL
Sharks WWWLL
Attacking record: Magpies 26, Sharks 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 34, Sharks 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 7 - Sharks 30 defeated Magpies 24 at Bruce Oval

Queanbeyan Blues V West Belconnen Warriors

After opening the season with five straight wins, the Queanbeyan Blues stumbled - losing big to the Bulls at Gungahlin (40-20) in Round 6. They then backed up in Round 7 with a four point loss to their opponents this week, the Warriors. They've since righted the ship, beating the Rams (34-22) and the Sharks (30-24) last week. The Blues are still the best attacking team in the competition - just. They've produced 316 points so far this is season, two points more than the ladder leading Bulls. But the Blues very clearly have the best defence in the Canberra Raiders Cup.

The Warriors are coming off back to back to back wins over the Sharks (24-18) and Bulldogs (18-10). West Belconnen kept Goulburn scoreless in the first half last week, taking a 14 point advantage to the half time break. A great try to Warriors centre Ryley Thomas in the 56th minute put the home team ahead by 18 points. The Bulldogs made a comeback, with two tries in the space of five minutes to Thomas Croker and Dillon Rota. The Warriors, however, held on in the final 15 minutes, despite having a man sent to the bin.

This Saturday, it is second versus third. It should be a terrific clash. While the Warriors' form has improved over the course of the year, I'll stick with the Blues at home in this one.

Season record: Blues 7 and 2 (2nd, +142)
Warriors 5 and 3, 1 draw (3rd, +26)
Form: Blues WLLWW
Warriors WWLWW
Attacking record: Blues 35, Warriors 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 19, Warriors 22 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 7 - Warriors 22 defeated Blues 18 at Kippax

Gungahlin Bulls V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Bulls lost their only match of the season to the Kangaroos in Round 8 - and lost it big time, 60-14. However, they got back into their stride last weekend, defeating the Rams, 46-18, at Phillip. The Bulls went to a 24-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes, scoring four straight tries. The home team showed some signs of life, with centre Aidan Kawiri and winger Lachlan Eveston crossing for the home team. But the Bulls still led 24-8 at half time and were dominant in the second half.

Bulls coach Neil Bijorac was happy with his team's return to form.

"We had two big bodies in Josh Allen and Jackson Owen back for us today and when we put them on that sort of changed the game a little bit too. It was good to have that strike coming off the bench," Bijorac told The Canberra Times

The Bulls now host the Bushrangers on Saturday at Gungahlin Enclosed. The Bushies head into the match having suffered back to back losses - going down to the Bulldogs (32-22) and the Kangaroos (20-14). They came back well in the loss to the Roos last week at a soggy and cold Freebody, but couldn't quite get there.

I can't go past the Bulls in this game.

Season record: Bulls 8 and 1 (1st, +52)
Bushrangers 3 and 6 (7th, -60)
Form: Bulls WWWLW
Bushrangers WLWLL
Attacking record: Bulls 35, Bushrangers 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 29, Bushrangers 30 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 7 - Bulls 36 defeated Bushrangers 20 at Greenway

Goulburn Bulldogs V Woden Valley Rams

The Bulldogs were on a three game winning streak heading into last weekend's match against the Warriors. They had beaten the Rams (36-22), Magpies (34-18) and Bushrangers (32-22), but suffered an eight point loss to West Belconnen last Saturday. Their opponent this week, the Rams, have sadly won just once all season - and Ken Nagas's team is now on a seven game losing streak. Expect the Bulldogs to take out this game, at home.

Season record: Bulldogs 5 and 4 (4th, +28)
Rams 1 and 8 (9th, -142)
Form: Bulldogs LWWWL
Rams LLLLL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 28, Rams 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 25, Rams 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: Round 7 - Bulldogs 36 defeated Rams 20 at Phillip

Sami Afele calls for Canberra Raiders team in NSWRL premiership on the road to NRLW

Experienced Yass Magpies back-rower Sami Afele says a NSWRL premiership side should be the next step towards the entry of a Raiders NRLW team.

"I think it should be put forward to make a [NSWRL premiership] side first for us to play in the Sydney comp," Afele said.

I watched the Blues and the Warriors... I had the commentary from the game at Walker Park in my ear. You can watch Magpies V Sharks above for free or on Bar TV Sports here: https://www.bartvsports.com.au/rugby-le ... ed-sharks/

Matt Woolnough absolutely blitzed it by the sounds of it. Moala busy in the comeback, and Esera seemed to do a few good things. Livai Kaloutolu is one of the SG Ball players sacked by the Raiders earlier this year and he sounded like he had a great game. Hopefully he works his way back into the Raiders' system next year (along with Niu Mariota). They also have Raiders SG Ball player Josh Pokoney at halfback. The Sharks are no easybeats this year; they have been boosted by some surplus Raiders NSW Cup players (who've not been able to get a run, like Sam Wentworth and Khalil Rahme) plus some former Raiders.

Have now watched the replay myself. Clarkson played the opening quarter hour, but he looks like he’s still getting back to match fitness. The Sharks went to an 18-0 lead, and Clarkson went off and Esera on. Esera played the rest of the game, and he was one of the best for Yass, if not the best. But he was looking pretty tired by the end of it. He’s a bit susceptible when forced to turn or shift as he’s so big. Clarkson came back on for the final 20 minutes or so. Moala playing at five eighth, did some good things in attack. Set up one try with a kick, produced a 90 metre goal line drop out (over 50 metres on the full). Also threw an intercept.

'I'll keep that with me': Queanbeyan Blues player-coach Terry Campese's life-changing Larapinta Trail trek

Terry Campese heard stories "you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy" as he trekked along the Northern Territory's Larapinta Trail. The Queanbeyan Blues player-coach was among a group of 19 young people and nine adults completing an eye-opening journey.

"The little things that you think are a huge issue mean really nothing, considering some of those stories that some of these people have gone through," Campese said.
