They really shouldn't be mentioning first grade hookers along side signings like this, but I guess it drives interest.

SG Ball is Under 19s at present. If he’s 19 (or under) on 31 December last year he qualifies.

The thing that’s a little worrying is the heavy reliance on Harold Matthews graduates and they won the wooden spoon last year. There are some good additions, not as many as last year. But hopefully enough to make the difference. Will try to look at the Matts squad too, when I get some time, but that’s always more difficult. If someone else wants to… feel free!

Not certain, but it sounds an awful lot like News will be transmitting the NSWRL TV games. The Raiders to feature in Round 1 on NSWRL TV by the looks. It's not clear why the NSWRL can't arrange a deal for an organisation like Bar TV Sports to cover every single game. The Raiders' away games are the ones we will really want.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders meet the Illawarra Steelers at home in Round 1 of the 2022 Tarsha Gale Cup competition. The Steelers finished second on the ladder in 2021, but were knocked out by the Sydney Roosters during their finals campaign. Canberra missed the finals last year, winning just two games and drawing one. They ended in seventh place. The two teams have previously met three times, with the Raiders yet to record a victory. The Steelers beat the Raiders 28-16 last year at Kippax - but 2022 is a new year, with plenty of off season turnover in Canberra's playing ranks.

22. Isaia Tu'ifua

AT A GLANCE: The 2021 season is one that the Raiders' Harold Matthews team would have been happy to put behind them. They finished with the wooden spoon and failed to record a single win. In contrast, their opponents on Saturday, the Manly Sea Eagles finished as minor premiers - and were undefeated on their path to victory in the Grand Final. They beat the Parramatta Eels, 24-12, in the decider. As with the Tarsha Gale Cup squad, the Raiders will have a fresh line up in 2022, with a number of key players graduating to the SG Ball team. Many of the newcomers have come through the district representative teams, the Riverina Bulls and Monaro Colts. Canberra has lost in their previous two encounters with the Sea Eagles - 28-22, at Kippax in 2019 and 50-10 at HE Laybutt Field in 2018.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders won their fourth SG Ball title in 2021, defeating the Illawarra Steelers, 18-14, in an enthralling Grand Final at Leichhardt Oval. The team was littered with prospective first graders - the likes of Xavier Savage, Trey Mooney, Caleb Esera, Clay Webb and Michael Asomua. However, those players have moved up in the Raiders' ranks this year, with Savage and Mooney promoted into the top 30 NRL squad. There'll be plenty of work ahead for the new combination.

The team lists are difficult to decipher, but we are assuming Prinston Esera, the brother of Caleb, will play at centre and Jacob Piper on the wing. There are some other players to watch bustling forward Nui Mariota, the brother of Ata and Kiwi hooker Stan Iongi. Good prospects like half Blake Metcalfe and second rower Kaden Williams have returned to the fold. Jack Sandford and Mitch Prest are the only players backing up from the 2021 Grand Final squad. The Sea Eagles will likely be tough opposition. They finished second on the ladder in 2021 in this grade, and were premiers in Harold Matthews. This Saturday, we will see a re-match of last year's Grand Final qualifier - won by the Raiders 20-18 at Leichhardt. What a thriller that was. Hopefully, this will be another great game. If you're in Canberra, make sure you get out to Kippax on Saturday.

The Raiders' district teams, the Riverina Bulls and Monaro Colts, meet at McLean Oval at Harden on Sunday, in the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cups.

Seven 2021 SG Ball premiership winners now training with NRL squad

The junior reps 2022 season kicks off this Saturday, with all three Canberra Raiders sides in action at Raiders Belconnen. Raiders premiership winning SG Ball coach Ash Barnes says that winning competitions is great but having players pushing through the grades is far more important.

“Our number one goal is to develop players and see them go through the grades. To have an NRL debutant in Xavier last year and Trey being 18th man a number of times was really pleasing to see," Barnes said.

Physical altercation on the sidelines involving female spectator(s) sitting in the first row behind the fence and members of the Manly Harold Matthews team. Lots of pushing and shoving, most of team was involved trying to bring others or one other under control. Looked like a melee.

15th min TRY RAIDERS They dive over from dummy half. Stan Iongi gets his first try in green. Blake Metcalfe converts from virtually in front. The Sea Eagles have been looking dangerous in attack, throwing lots of forward passes, some of which are being picked up.
