30 Years Canberra Raiders Dream Team: Props

To celebrate the 30th season, The Greenhouse has already conducted a series of polls this year to determine the top 30 moments in Canberra Raiders history. Now, as the season rounds out, we'll be conducting a series of polls to determine The Greenhouse 30 Years Dream Team... the best squad of 17 players in the Canberra Raiders history.

Some years ago, a similar vote was taken and this was the result:

1. Gary BELCHER
2. John FERGUSON
3. Mal MENINGA (c)
4. Peter JACKSON
5. Noa NADRUKU
6. Laurie DALEY
7. Ricky STUART
13. Bradley CLYDE
12. David FURNER
11. Ruben WIKI
10. Glenn LAZARUS
9. Steve WALTERS
8. Sam BACKO

14. Brett MULLINS
15. Jason CROKER
16. Brent TODD
17. Chris O'SULLIVAN

So has the passing of an additional five years or so made a difference?

In familiar fashion, we'll take it position by position. Players need to have played 40 or more first grade games to qualify to be part of each poll. If you'd like to vote for a player not mentioned in the poll, you just have to post the player's name.

So it is on to the forwards, and we'll start with the nominations for prop. You have TWO votes in this poll. You may change your initial vote later. Note that a player like Ruben Wiki will also be nominated for the second row:

Lazo was the premier prop for a very long time. Automatic choice.

Slammin Sam was my other , Wiki for me was a backrower and will slot into that position

You could honestly select any of those players.

We have had some fantastic props over the years. Simply amazing.

I always had a fond spot for Brent Todd. He was slow, threw an intercept pass in the 89 GF (First time he ever passed I think) and never scored a try for us.....I think he scored one try in his whole career. But, Todd was reliable. He was a brick in defence and hardly missed a tackle. He would run it up all day and never let you down.

Sadly, I couldn't vote for him.

Glen Lazarus was hands down the best prop I have ever seen. An amazing player for his size.

I voted Wiki and Lazo. I had to vote for Muss. He played over 200 games for us and was our fear factor for many years. One of my favourite sites in the game was a Wiki hit.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where individuals with low ability in a specific area grossly overestimate their competence. This often occurs because they lack the knowledge or skills to accurately assess their own abilities, leading to a false sense of confidence.

Not many, compared to the back row, so that's why it was noted he'd also be nominated for the second row poll also.

Ditto. The Brick with Eyes was an obvious choice. Then I remembered how Slammin Sam won the Man of Match in Stae of Origin at least twice on one series and that made up my mind.

Pretty clear to me that Wiki should not be in props, second row is his best spot... but anyway, that's my opinion! Lazarus way in the lead, we need some more votes for the second prop!

Someone was asking how many games Ruben Wiki played front row for Canberra. It is only 18 of 225 appearances. The majority of his appearances for the Raiders was in the second row.

PS, in all these polls you may change your vote(s). ;)

And don't forget, you have TWO votes in this poll. At least one person's missed their second vote!

for this reason he shouldnt be considered.

He and DF will win the 2nd row spots I would imagine. It would be a shame if he took at front row spot when he only played 8% of his game there ( thats if my maths is correct )

Actually, Wiki also played 85 of his games for us at centre, and 97 at second row, the remainder at bench or even on the wing.

Lazzo and Backo pretty easily still. Shillo and TLL can put pressure on with a couple more of their best seasons.

Special mention though to Davico who I still think is under rated and very unlucky to not play Origin.

I'll go for two locally developed Props. Lazo is a must. He is to me the best all round Front Row Forward I have seen. Such size, speed and defensive awareness. He always got his side/s going forward. Although he was never selected for Rep sides I'll go with Luke 'Statue' Davico as the second prop. For 10 years he carted us forward and he had the respect of those he played with like Stewart, Daley, Clyde, Furner, Wiki, Mullins. It was a shame he suffered so much injury towards the end of his career with us. A torn pectoral (He was before his time with that one) saw him leave us to head for England where he did the same injury again and then to the Knights where injury again hampered him. Not the largest prop to play for us, but he never took a backward step with the ball in hand.
