30 Years Canberra Raiders Dream Team: Second rowers

To celebrate the 30th season, The Greenhouse has already conducted a series of polls this year to determine the top 30 moments in Canberra Raiders history. Now, as the season rounds out, we'll be conducting a series of polls to determine The Greenhouse 30 Years Dream Team... the best squad of 17 players in the Canberra Raiders history.

Some years ago, a similar vote was taken and this was the result:

1. Gary BELCHER
2. John FERGUSON
3. Mal MENINGA (c)
4. Peter JACKSON
5. Noa NADRUKU
6. Laurie DALEY
7. Ricky STUART
13. Bradley CLYDE
12. David FURNER
11. Ruben WIKI
10. Glenn LAZARUS
9. Steve WALTERS
8. Sam BACKO

14. Brett MULLINS
15. Jason CROKER
16. Brent TODD
17. Chris O'SULLIVAN

So has the passing of an additional five years or so made a difference?

In familiar fashion, we'll take it position by position. Players need to have played 40 or more first grade games to qualify to be part of each poll. If you'd like to vote for a player not mentioned in the poll, you just have to post the player's name.

So to the second rowers. You have TWO votes in this poll. You may change your initial vote later. Here are the nominations:

This is an easy one for me.

Wiki and Furner.

Wiki was a class centre and then a class backrower.

Furners record speaks for itself

Furnsey and Dean Lance - Much as I Love Rubes, it makes it difficult to vote for him in a thing like this as he starred in two roles.

I couldn't go past David Furner and Ruben Wiki. Both as tough as nails, both fast and exceptional defenders against either backs or forwards. David Furner's goal kicking is another string to his bow. No one could intimidate them either.

I went Furner (who is the standout) and Croker, i had to find somewhere in team for him after playing 318 games for the Raiders. Wiki for the Front row for mine.

Wiki and Furner in that order.

Furner was a tough and skillful second rower who was probably under-rated in that star studded team, but Wiki was as fearsome and tough a player as I have ever seen in the NRL, with great agility and skill to boot. His last few years with us were just immense.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Furner was fantastic, both in defense and attack and had good hands. His combo with Stuart was a beauty. Wiki had to be my starting side and second rower is where he slots.

I prefered Wiki as a centre.
Some people talk about the weather. Others do something about it.

I voted Furner and Wiki, but am now stricken with remorse that I couldn't find a place for Dean Lance.

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Im the same with Lance, he had to be one of the best tacklers ever to grace the field. The technique he had was near perfect
