I'm with you El Capitano. Either at fullback or wing he looked very good. I think that is the first time I have seen him play. Impressive.

Sutton went offing the second quarter but was back on the bench for the second half.
No one else from the 30.

He was wearing No17. Defended well particularly against Mannah who seemed to pick him out to run at.

It looked like Sutton went off injured. He also copped another knock quite early.
The commentators confused him and Hudson Young a lot so it's hard to tell exactly what each of them did.
Number 3, Harley Smith-Shields was holding his fingers in the second half. I didn't see him leave the field so it couldn't have been too bad.

Horsburgh seems to be doing everything needed to be selected. Hope he gets a crack at the 17.

My raw notes from game;

Guler gets pushed off two tackles in middle of field. Runs ineffective.
Solid nothing special

Simmonsen fullback looks strong and quick, size similar to Cotric. But made mistake when taking long kick in corner, tried to step Jennings down sideline and tackled out, really low percentage play.
He seems to have the step and strength to get in between defenders and find front.
Dropped a kick off bounce, dived for it. Difficult but should have taken it.
Not in position on parra grubbed from 15m out, no idea where he was looked like he came up in the line, Moses just kicked behind and easy try.
Looks nervous. Off at 30min
Back on wing at 50min
Strong tackle to throw winger out.
Pass on ground and he picks up with a foot out with no pressure, dumb.
Looks raw. Probably needs a year in Reggie’s to get used to the game again.

CNK has been safe, cleaned up a couple of kicks outside and inside ingoal.
Bit of a step but also light, doesn’t look strong so has been pushed a bit in tackles.
Wing for first 30 then fullback. No mistakes and has been under pressure.
Starts second half fullback
Takes bomb really well.
Very involved in set out from line. Passing from DH and then run.
Made break off long kick return, somehow shimmied through. Made it to the attacking 40m
Positioning for kicks has been good, hasn’t had to defend grubbed yet. Also not against Moses now.
Off at 60min

Brad abbey
Fullback at 60min
Has been solid and safe.
Dropped ball on ground after bat back off bomb, tough chance.

Murchie strong and solid, second row first 40min. Strong defence even 1on1, dominated a couple of tackles. Best forward for us first half. Looks like a first grader
Back on second row 60min Constant strong contact in defence
Running lines, controls ball on short passes.

Hudson young second row, solid. Not particularly big. On for about 60min all up, just didn’t stand out

Royce Hunt is thick. Playing middle
Couple of runs looks strong
Not that involved

Horsburgh came on at 30min playing middle. He’s tall. Strong runner. Angry redhead! Impressive in only two runs
Starts second half in middle. Steps into gap off run and hand free for offload, good run.
Drop ball
Always strong in tackles
Finished game
Impressive, doesn’t look like he could handle many minutes in FG

Defensive line moving up quick first 15min, not passive like last years.
Eels Made 60m off kickoff after 1st quarter though.
Hardly any good finishes to sets in first half. Eels getting heaps off good field position based off us coming off our own line, and Eels getting quite a few penalties whenever working off their end.
Second half evens out when most of Eels first graders taken off.

Mitch Moses having a blinder. Executing well and in total control of the team. Have had some good sets, but also had good field position off a number of penalties
Off after 40min
Junior paulo dominant in middle for first half. Hard to bring down and a few offloads, put them on the front foot.

20-6 first half Eels
Eels first grade team against us with maybe 2 first grade bench forwards.
Moses controlled game well with attack and kicks.
Got a few penalties whenever struggling out of their end. Had a lot of good field position.

22-20 Raiders full time
All Eels FG players off by 60min
No Raiders 2018 FG’ers in second half

A win is a win, so good for confidence within the Club. A last gasp trial win over last years wooden spooners does not a season make, but I'd rather that than a loss any day. The look on the players faces when Sammy slotted the conversion from wide out said it all.
Sam Williams MOTM for mine. That was saying to RS, I want my halves spot in FG.
CNK next best, Lui, Starling, all of the backrowers, Satini, Kris, Niko and a cameo from Guler.
Now who will Sticky pick for the next trial? The only one to harm their chances I thought was Simonsson. Nerves maybe.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad puts down marker for Canberra Raiders berth

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad has put the first marker down in the battle for the Canberra Raiders No.1 jersey.

“He's a chance of getting in the team somewhere with that performance," Mounties coach Peter Marrapodi - who took charge of the team tonight. "He's come to the club with a lot of energy and a really positive outlook and he excelled. I look forward to seeing what he can produce over the next couple of weeks."

CANBERRA RAIDERS 22 (Tom Starling, JJ Collins, Sam Williams, Andre Niko tries; Sam Williams 3 goals) bt PARRAMATTA EELS 20 (Ethan Parry 2, Jaeman Salmon, Michael Jennings tries; Mitchell Moses 2 goals) at St Marys Stadium

Teenager Dylan Brown impresses for Parramatta Eels in trial loss to Canberra Raiders

On paper this was a mismatch. The Eels were close to full strength, while the Raiders fielded – with a couple of exceptions – a reserve grade team. So it proved early on. The hosts piled on four tries in the opening half to run out to a 20-0 lead. However, Canberra hit back just on either side of the break and then stormed home when the opposition's best players came off. Raiders winger Andre Niko scored a long-range try after the siren, with Sam Williams converting from out wide to steal his side a 22-20 win.

I thought Guler was pretty good tonight Beejay.

Actually I thought all of the middles competing for a spot (Collins, Lui, Horsburgh, Guler and Hunt) went well.

Sutton was quiet but didn't get many minutes, seems like he had some injury concerns.

Was nice to see some of the younger guys like Murchie and Kris look like they've physically matured a bit, was really impressed with both of their defence.

I said earlier in the night that its all about individual performances and they continues to play that way in the 2nd half.

Parra 1st grade team bullied us and we played as if we didnt know each other , as expected.

Impressed with CNK , I liked what he did in 2017 too.
Abbey was good too , looked solid.
Williams played well , found the ground with a few kicks.

Horsburgh was my pick of the Raiders.
Also thought JJ Collins did well , seemed to be having a real go.
Starling , who is he , reminds me of Cook a bit.

How was Williams able to score after 6 tackles near the end of the game? I can only think that they called Parramatta played at the ball after starling sprayed a pass, but a tough call if it was

Kris was excellent defensively. Murchie too. Horsburgh really added some starch but looks like he needs to work on his fitness a bit. Good enough to be on the bench in the round 1 17.

Starling was great but he's never playing first grade. He'd be a liability in the middle in defense.

We looked really disjointed early on with Havili trying to force things to happen but once Horsburgh got us on top a bit, Junior Paulo went off, Simonsson had a rest, and Sam got some control back we started to look good.

Good question, he was setting up for the kick in front, the footage cut to a replay, when it was back live the commentators said he kicked the goal but the scoreline didn’t change from 16...

Edit Through Green Eyes mentions Williams kicked the goal but it was somehow missed.. so Williams thought the game was already won when he went for the final conversion

The scoreboard certainly didn't award the third goal attempt to Williams, it was clearly reading 20-20.

I will say I wish one of hodgo or toots played last night. Preferably hodgo as toots is coming back from injury. I know we won and Sammy did a good job leading the boys around the park, but having one of our co captain there would have been good for morale I think. Especially when we were getting spanked early. Even if he/they only played 20-40 mins for safety’s sake.
They’re not just the captains of the first grade team. They’re the captains of the club and it would have been nice for them to suit up with the young guys.
