Canberra Raiders recruitment guru Peter Mulholland again fighting cancer

Strong people make up great football clubs. Which is why great football clubs pull together in tough times. On Tuesday, recruitment guru Peter Mulholland found out he had relapsed in his fight against cancer. He preferred to speak about the debut of youngster Kai O’Donnell.

“Honestly, if I think too much about it I am not all right,” Mulholland conceded. “So I try not to spend too much time thinking about it. That’s what I said to Rick and Don (Furner, Raiders CEO). ‘I’ll tell you what’s wrong and then we’ll just forget about it and get on with what we do’. That’s the best thing.”

How a Raiders stalwart stays positive during his darkest days

Hours after receiving the news that no cancer patient wants to hear, Pete Mulholland was on the phone to tell an emotional mother that her son had been picked in the Raiders’ first-grade side to play the Melbourne Storm.

“I rang his [Kai O'Donnell's] mother on Tuesday night. She was in tears. He’s a great young man from a great family,” says Mulholland.

C'mon Pete. Tell 2020 it can **** right off. You're gonna be there the day we raise the premiership trophy...and for the weeks of celebration afterwards!
And to all the people who doubted me, hello to them as well. - Mark Webber, Raiders Ballboy and Unluckiest F1 Driver Ever

I'm attacking in the right way, instead of just...attacking in the general direction. - Max Aaron (also eerily apropos for the Green Machine)

Well, you certainly can't fault his attitude. I'm glad he's doing something he loves for a living. That must help his mental health.

Sounds like a tough journey though.

Canberra Raiders recruitment guru Pete Mulholland's cancer battle continues

Pete Mulholland has been diagnosed with a different form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, B instead of T-cell.

"It's re-emerged unfortunately. I had a PET scan about two weeks ago and they found that it's come back again. At this stage, I'll have treatment [Friday] and Saturday ... and if I come through those side effects alright I'll be out probably Sunday, and continue a normal regime of chemotherapy."

‘I’ll just get this poison into me first – then we can talk about rugby league’

Last Friday, I phoned Peter Mulholland, the recruitment guru for the Canberra Raiders, for a general chat about his favourite topic – rugby league – but it wasn’t the best time. He was at the hospital.

“Mate, I’m just walking in to get this poison injected into me. But let me get in there, find a vein, settle down, and then I’ll call you back. There’s a few things I want to talk about the game and where it’s headed.”

I have no doubt that it's blokes like Peter who have turned around our performances and culture on and off the field. Such a gentleman. With his outlook on life you couldn't help but feel inspired by having him around. Such a great ambassador for our club and the game

That was a really good read.

He obviously has a great outlook on life. Must be a pretty tough journey.

Great read, all the best with the continuing battle!

One thing that stood out was what a grub Russell Packer is. But why should that surprise with his history.
