The Canberra Raiders face the Sydney Roosters at the Sydney Roosters in Round 10, in a long awaited 2019 Grand Final re-match. But there is no doubt that the injury crisis facing the Green Machine has taken a lot of the gloss off the contest. The Raiders are now missing six of their Grand Final team to long term injuries. In the words of Canberra Raiders captain Jarrod Croker, it's backs to the wall this week for the Green Machine!
Last round: 2020 Round 9. Melbourne Storm 20 - Canberra Raiders 16. It was a bit of a horror night for the Green Machine. It was another horror night for injury, with hooker Josh Hodgson suffering an ACL injury and Bailey Simonsson a shoulder dislocation. There were some horror calls from the officials, the most obvious being a decision to send Simonsson to the sin bin. NRL referees' boss Graham Annesley later admitted it was simply wrong. There were other puzzling decisions, particularly the failure to penalise the Storm for deliberately delaying a line drop out. But the Simonsson sin binning proved to be crucial.
More on Round 9: As I saw it
Team news: Hodgson and Simonsson have been ruled out for the season, joining John Bateman, Corey Horsburgh, Sia Soliola and Emre Guler on the sidelines. That is a huge hole in the squad, particularly when you add in Jack Murchie, Luke Bateman and JJ Collins, who were all released earlier in the year. They're now down to 22 fit players in the top squad. Siliva Havili will start at hooker, with Tom Starling on the bench as back up at dummy half. Jordan Rapana replaces Simonsson on the wing, while Curtis Scott comes into the top 17 on the bench. Joe Tapine will start at lock, with last week's debutant Kai O'Donnell dropping back to the bench.
For the Roosters, Brett Morris (groin) will return, with Matt Ikuvalu retaining his spot in the starting team, and Ryan Hall dropping out. Boyd Cordner (head knock) has been named, with Mitch Aubusson dropping to the bench, and Poasa Faamuausili to the reserves list.
Late changes: Curtis Scott (arm infection) was ruled out by the Raiders on Wednesday, with the Raiders bringing in Semi Valemi for his NRL debut. Matt Frawley was also omitted on Wednesday night, leaving Sam Williams and Darby Medlyn on the bench.
The Roosters have ruled out lock Nat Butcher, sustained a minor injury at training late in the week. He's replaced by Isaac Liu in the starting team. Drew Hutchison also dropped out of the squad on Wednesday night, leaving Poasa Faamausili and Ryan Hall on the reserves list.
History: The Raiders have won 28 of 64 matches against the Sydney Roosters. Sadly, there have been some long losing streaks, but Canberra has won four of the past 10 matches. The Roosters won all three games played between the clubs in 2019, including the Grand Final. They won 30-24 at Lang Park during Magic Round last year, after going to a 30-6 lead early in the second half. The Raiders' subsequent comeback fell short. Then in Round 21, Canberra suffered a narrow, 22-18, loss to the Roosters at Canberra Stadium - with the Raiders' comeback again just falling short. The Raiders lost 14-8 in the Grand Final. It was a game marred by officiating controversy, with the Green Machine being the better team for much of the contest. The teams have played just twice before at the Sydney Cricket Ground, during the 1987 finals. The Roosters won the first contest, but the Raiders qualified for the 1987 Grand Final by beating the Roosters, 32-24, in the Preliminary Final.

2019 Round 9 Canberra Raiders V Sydney Roosters
2018 Round 23 Canberra Raiders V Sydney Roosters
Form: Raiders: WLLWL
Roosters: WWWLW
The Roosters started 2020 with back to back losses. But since the resumption of the season, they have been on fire. Since Round 3, they have only lost to the Storm, 27-25, in golden point. They had a big 42-16 win against the Cowboys in Townsville in their last outing. They have also had recent victories over the Bulldogs (42-6), Eels (24-10) and Dragons (26-12). The Raiders have won just twice in their past five games - against the Tigers (14-6) and Dragons (22-16).
Betting: The Raiders are at long odds, paying $5.00, the Roosters $1.18. The Raiders have a big 12.5 points start in the line betting. The Raiders odds have lengthened over the week.
Stat attack: This is a battle between fourth (Storm) and seventh (Raiders) on the ladder. The Raiders' attack has shown some signs of improvement in recent weeks, but their record in 2020 still lags, ranking 10th in the NRL. Meanwhile, the Roosters rank a very clear first on both points and tries scored. They have averaged nearly 30 points scored per match - scoring more than 40 points against the Cowboys and almost 60 points against the Broncos.
The Roosters rank first for line breaks, try assists, line break assists and kick return metres. They rank second for running metres, post contact metres and offloads. They also rank third for tackle breaks. They rank second for line engagements and third for supports. The Raiders only rank in the top five attacking statistics in dummy half runs and one pass hit ups. They rank last for general play passes and second last for offloads. The Raiders aren't far off the top five in categories like tackle breaks, running metres and post contact metres. It still highlights the Raiders' more conservative approach in attack. That isn't new. That approach took the Raiders to the Grand Final in 2019. But in 2019, the error counts were cut as a result. In 2020, the Raiders rank third for errors (Roosters fourth) and fifth for handling errors (Roosters ninth). And just doing what was done last year might not be enough in 2020.
The Raiders' defensive record is much better than their attacking record. However, it has been slipping. They now have the fourth best defence in the league. The Roosters, however, are a better defensive team than Canberra too, ranking second in the competition. The Raiders cut their missed tackles last week, but they still rank third in the NRL on that score. The Roosters have the most ineffective tackles in the competition. The Raiders rank well in that category (fourth fewest) - but not as well as 2019. The Roosters still have a better effective tackle rate overall than the Raiders.
Canberra adopted a strategy of kicking often and long in 2019 and they rank second in the NRL for total kicking metres this year. In contrast, the Roosters rank 14th for kicking metres. But then again, the Roosters are also averaging 200 more running metres per game than the Raiders. They simply don't have to kick long, as much.
2020 Season record: Raiders 5 and 4 (7th, +31)
Roosters 6 and 3 (4th, +156)
Attack: Raiders 18 points and 3 tries scored per match, ranked 10th on tries scored
Roosters 30 points and 5 tries scored per match, ranked 1st on tries scored
Defence: Raiders 15 points and 2 tries conceded per match, ranked 4th on tries conceded
Roosters 12 points and 2 tries conceded per match, ranked 2nd on tries conceded
Possession: Raiders 49 per cent, Roosters 50 per cent
Completion rate: Raiders 78 per cent, Roosters 76 per cent
Running: Raiders 1696 running metres from 185 runs (14 dummy half runs), 168 kick return metres, 569 post contact metres per match
Roosters 1897 running metres from 199 runs (8 dummy half runs), 247 kick return metres, 659 post contact metres per match
Tackle breaks: Raiders 31, Roosters 35 per match
Line breaks: Raiders 3, Roosters 6 per match
Try assists: Raiders 3, Roosters 4 per match
Line break assists: Raiders 2, Roosters 4 per match
Offloads: Raiders 8, Roosters 12 per match
Kicking: Raiders 611 kicking metres from 22 kicks per match
Roosters 498 kicking metres from 20 kicks per match
Tackling: Raiders 358 made, 35 missed, 14 ineffective per match, 88 per cent tackle efficiency
Roosters 365 made, 25 missed, 18 ineffective per match, 89 per cent tackle efficiency
Running metres conceded: Raiders 1487, Roosters 1358 metres per match
Errors: Raiders 12, Roosters 12 per match
Penalties conceded: Raiders 6, Roosters 6 per match
Penalties awarded: Raiders 5, Roosters 5 per match
Set re-starts conceded: Raiders 4, Roosters 4 per match
Set re-starts awarded: Raiders 4, Roosters 3 per match
Key match-ups:
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and James Tedesco. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad has really lifted in the past couple of weeks, but this week, he's up against the best in the business, Roosters' fullback James Tedesco. So far in 2020, Tedesco has four tries, five try assists, six line breaks, 54 tackle breaks and 244 metres gained per match. He currently ranks equal first in the NRL for line break assists (11, with Latrell Mitchell), first for average kick return metres (74 per game) and running metres, equal second for tackle breaks (54, with Nick Cotric) and first for average tackle breaks (almost eight per game). Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is no laggard himself, though. He ranks first in the NRL for total runs, third for total running metres, and fifth for total running metres. CNK has posted four tries in 2020, one try assist, one line break, 32 tackle breaks and 201 running metres per game.
Jack Wighton and Luke Keary With Josh Hodgson missing, Jack Wighton and his halves partner, George Williams, are really going to have to step up to fill the play making void for Canberra. Wighton was the Clive Churchill Medalist in 2019, judged the best player in the Grand Final. Luke Keary? Well he's just been voted the best five eighth in the competition in the annual Players' Poll. The battle between Wighton and Keary will be critical to the outcome. In 2020, Keary has produced four tries, 10 try assists, seven line break assists, five forced line drop outs, an average 84 running metres and 165 kicking metres per game, and an 86 per cent tackle efficiency rate. By comparison, Wighton has delivered four tries, three try assists, four line break assists, four forced line drop outs, an average 100 running metres and 251 kicking metres per game, and 88 per cent tackle efficiency. Wighton will be right in the battle in this match-up.
George Williams and Kyle Flanagan George Williams has made a great start to his NRL career for the Raiders. He has one try, eight try assists, one line break assist, five forced line drop outs, and an average 80 running metres and 239 kicking metres to his name. His pin point kicks to the try line have been a real weapon. But this will be no easy match-up for Williams. Roosters' youngster Kyle Flanagan has been having a break out season since taking over the No. 7 jersey from Cooper Cronk. For a start, he's the NRL's top point scorer right now. He's also produced four tries, five try assists, four line break assists, four forced line drop outs, and an average 40 running metres and 252 kicking metres per game. Flanagan, however, ranks first in the NRL for ineffective tackles and equal first for try causes (seven) amongst NRL halfbacks. He has more try causes than any Rooster. The Raiders would do well to target him. George Williams has the better defensive game (87 per cent tackle efficiency, 85 per cent for Flanagan). It should be a great contest.
Our tip: The Roosters are deserved raging hot favourites in this match. The statistics point to the Roosters having the advantage in just about every department. There are some things the Raiders can try. The Raiders' kickers will need to keep the Roosters at their own end - and keep the ball out of the hands of the Roosters' danger men. In defence, they'll need to try and force the Roosters into error, with good line speed and work in the rucks. The Raiders' forward pack has been decimated, and the young forwards will have to have the game of their lives if Canberra is to match the Sydney outfit up front. But if they can hold their own, the Raiders might have a shot. Williams and Wighton will need to get quick service and ask some questions with the ball in hand. It can't just be about the "grind". A slow start will be fatal. It is tough work coming back against the Roosters, and they're very hard to stop once they have momentum. Just ask the Broncos. I'd love to see the Raiders get just a little piece of revenge for the 2019 decider, for "six again" and for "Trainergate". But I'll tip with the weight of the evidence. Roosters by 12.
What they're saying:
Jarrod Croker: "It's backs against the wall. We're not the only team with injuries. It's survival of the fittest at the moment. There's so many players going down with big injuries. Every team is getting injuries. I don't know what it is, but it's going to be last man standing I think."

Too cold for me... plus better vision and sound at home. It was offered to the Club82 and Platinum members initially, but didn't get to capacity of 90 cars by the looks.

Game Day Rooster Haters!
Time for a win at the SCG!
Time for a win at the SCG!
Re: 2020 Rd 10 V Roosters: Game Day
Roosters have two alter egos - one is a team that is virtually unplayable, rolls through sets making 70-80m each time with fast, mistake free footy, who win 13+. The other makes mistakes, can often be dominated in the stats department, but still often eek out a close win. I am really, really, hoping for the latter to turn out.
One side of me says we are a decent team - went all the way against Parramatta, got unlucky against Melbourne. Another says we are due for a smacking. Either way, if we win this, it will go down as one of the best victories in the club’s history, given the circumstances.

Worried about this team playing at the SCG for the first time. Can be tricky. Can see a few kicks out on the full tonight. The rain will hopefully keep the scores close

No rain predicted in Sydney and coastal areas today. Windy and cold.
I'm very excited.
Even a 5 day turnaround can't temper my weekly renewed belief that rolls around no matter what.
Havili first try scorer. Raiders 22 Roosters 18
C'mon!!!!

Wow, just checked the betting market. Ladbrokes have Raiders at $5.00 and a +12.5 line. Been a long time since we've been those odds.

Yep and even those 3 consistently get it wrong . It's a tough gig that's for sure you quite literally just need to know the rules of rugby league, watch a replay and then make the right decision. I know, it sounds like bloody rocket science doesn't it?!

I do think those odds are good value for the Raiders. Especially the line $2 at +12.5. I prefer the SB @ 4.50 the win with half time payout. Especially If we are running with the howling southerly at our backs in the first half. It is our bench that is particularly weak.GMGT wrote: ↑July 16, 2020, 10:32 amI can't for the life of me imagine why?? Could it be because half of our team isnt playing? Roosters were shocking in the first half last week. Against a good team they would have been down 3 tries not up 2 at half time. Even if the Cowboys kicked the goal from in front they were likely facing a big half time deficit.

Our outs are undoubtedly much more crucial then there's. There is also no way in the world friend and Morris don't play. Friend has passed every single hia protocol so far, why on earth would he pull out on game day from a concussion be has recovered fromNorthern Raider wrote: ↑July 16, 2020, 11:12 amRaiders missing 6 of their top 17. Cordner passed his HIA protocols last week and Robinson still sat him out. Morris is maybe 50/50 but we're only guessing as Roosters are being cagey on the topic. Ryan Hall has been retained in the squad to make sure they have cover.GMGT wrote: ↑July 16, 2020, 11:31 amOur outs are undoubtedly much more crucial then there's. Not specifically but we did replace Simo with Rapana. If it was Cotric ruled out then we would have done exactly that.

Re: 2020 Rd 10 V Roosters: Game Day
I'm tempted by the 13+ odds. Normally when we are fired up like this we win and we win well. Still leaning towards the 1-12 simply because it would be very tough to beat the premiers without our key players.

Re: 2020 Rd 10 V Roosters: Game Day
Interesting Ladbrokes have Raiders at 5.00 head to head and 5.40 for the 1-12. Not really worth the extra .40 in case of the blow out. For 13+ they are 16.00!!! That's worth a fiver as a spec bet.
