It is probably difficult to have two rookies in your outside backs, with just three games between them. I'd actually have HSS on the wing if Bateman is available at centre.

Combined with an experience player they should be OK. HSS with Cotric and Semi with Croker. You wouldn't pair them together.

That's right. There are quite a few issues Stuart has to consider here, not least of which is the match fitness of Bateman and CHN if they are available to play.

I'm not sure if Bateman is right to put him into the starting line-up at second row, but he might be able to play a large portion of the game at centre while CNK, Oldfield and Simo are out. (Assuming Scott's clearly not in the reckoning.)

I don't have a strong opinion one way or another. Thankfully HSS had a solid debut, but it's a big ask to chuck him in the deep end for 80, whether it's on the wing or at centre.

Loss of star Canberra Raiders pairing would leave a huge dent says Alan Tongue

The Canberra Raiders are sweating on a clearance for star forward pairing Josh Papalii and Joe Tapine, whose absence threatens to be a huge dent in a decimated pack. Canberra is still waiting to find out whether the two players will be allowed to travel to Townsville to play the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday without an influenza vaccination.

"That puts a huge dent, it really does when you think of the contribution that Papalii and Tapine have been through the middle," Tongue said.

Just on the "inexperienced edge" issue. It is worth noting that of the two centres NQL ran last week, one is a rookie with 7 games experience and one is a makeshift centre.

The FB is also a rookie- talented but not exactly a canny pro adept at scalpel like sweep plays.

HSS and Semi played together in the back all of last year and won a 2019 jersey flegg flag doing it. They'd feel pretty comfortable lining up next to each other imo. They'd be against an inexperienced or makeshift centre + Feldt. Feldt is effective but not a player you have defensive nightmares over. (I think he's that side, if it's not Feldt, happy days).

If ever there was a week and a reason to run two rookies together, this would be it. I don't really mind in the end if they end up Semi-Croker/HSS-Cotric for experience sake.

Heading into the finals, Rapana is going to be on the park somewhere. Most comfortably on the wing. Heading into the finals our main unsettled spot is right centre. Oldfield has filled in ok, but not locked it down. Scott has so far been somewhere in the spectrum of "unimpressive". By playing HSS at centre now we get a chance to look at what might be our best option going forward this season + next.

Our other centre options are all makeshift or on the nose. If we went into finals with one rookie at centre BUT Rapana outside him he has a fair chance of success. It's not an edge that smells of disaster probably has higher upside than throwing career wingers into makeshift centres.

Absolutely. Get him straight in there imo
100% agree with this, I'd start him. Give him that first 20 mins which will give him some recovery time for later in the match. He is an International forward who is not injured. He will be down on match fitness but that is all the more reason to get him onto the park early.

What we have to remember though is that he’s not only lacking match fitness but he’s essentially at the start of pre season. He hasn’t trained with an NRL team since February/March. I’d say it will be baby steps.

Unfamiliar with our structures too. He'll need some time to get the eye in. We can expect the odd drop ball and missed assignment till that happens.

Cavalry on the way: Canberra Raiders forward Ryan Sutton welcomes the prospect of Corey Harawira-Naera and John Bateman taking to the field

The Canberra Raiders face the 12th placed North Queensland Cowboys at the new Townsville Stadium on Saturday - and prop Ryan Sutton is wary of the home side.

"They're a good side, especially playing at home as well. They're going to be in their own back yard and it's going to be a really tough game," Sutton said.

"We're going to have to use this week to get the best preparation we can. [Head of performance] Nigel [Ashley-Jones] has got us training in skins to try and get us acclimatised [for Townsville's warmer weather]. We're taking every precaution we can before going up."

Since the Raiders pack was decimated by injury - with John Bateman, Corey Horsburgh, Emre Guler and Sia Soliola all sidelined long-term - Sutton has stepped into the breach and helped his team deliver wins over competition heavy weights, the Roosters and Rabbitohs.

He has been impressive off the bench, topping the tackle count (58) against South Sydney last Saturday, while making 18 runs and 122 running metres.

Sutton says the team has simply had to step up as a whole.

"As a collective group, we've just had to step up, because we've got a lot of players out at the minute. It's not good. I think that's the good thing about this team. Even if we do have a few players out, we have got players who can step up," Sutton said.

Sutton paid tribute to starting props Josh Papalii and Dunamis Lui for their performances in recent weeks. But he says the bench players have to take on leadership too.

"Losing Hodgy [Josh Hodgson] wasn't great, he's a real leader in the middle of the field... and Paps [Josh Papalii] can't do it all on his own."

"It's not just on Nami [Dunamis Lui], it's on us all. We've all got to take a step forward in leadership on the field. Nami... credit to him, he's playing really well at the minute. He's been outstanding to play with. He's showing real leadership qualities on the field. When the bench comes on, we've also got to take that responsibility."

With John Bateman on the verge of returning from shoulder surgery, and the arrival of new recruit Corey Harawira-Naera, Sutton is happy the cavalry is on the way. Harawira-Neara arrived at Raiders HQ yesterday and took to the training park for the first time today.

"He was in yesterday, I think he said it was literally within 30 minutes of being allowed to come in, he came in. He had some wellies on, it don't know what you call them over here... gum boots. He had some gum boots on and he was laughing," Englishman Sutton said.

"It's good to have him, he's going to be a great addition to the side. He's a great player and he's going to bring a lot to the team."

John Bateman was named in the Raiders extended squad last week, but was not quite ready to play. Sutton hopes he's close to a return for the Cowboys.

"He's a great quality player and he'll bring a lot to the team. If he does play this week, he'll definitely give us a boost of energy that's going to be needed. It'll just help the boys who have been doing it tough over the last few weeks. Hopefully we can get a good quality player in John back."

A report for The Greenhouse

Canberra Raiders wear extra layers to acclimatise for North Queensland Cowboys clash

Beanies and skins. That's the simple way the Green Machine is preparing for a trip to the tropics.

"I've got three layers on at the moment and still have to put two more on," Raiders prop Dunamis Lui said. "I've got skins to put on and we all have to wear beanies today. We're doing as much as we can to acclimatise and try to get used to that heat.

The Canberra Raiders have named their squad for Saturday’s match against the North Queensland Cowboys at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.

Bateman has been named in the second row, with Hudson Young shifting to lock to start the match.

Recruit Corey Harawira-Naera has been named on the bench for the Raiders, after getting through his first training run with the club this morning.

Rookies Kai O’Donnell and Harley Smith-Shields have been named in the extended squad.

I reckon on game day Bateman goes to lock and Young to second row. Pretty sure Ricky has pulled that switch in the past

Unless Young comes off after 20-30 allowing Bateman to switch to lock and CHN to second row

I have got to say I like that team. I have been critical of Scott, but if he can somehow become a solution rather than a problem with CNK back that will be a stacked side.

To be able to field that team with CNK, Simonsson, Oldfield, Soliola, Hodgson, Horsburgh and Guler all unavilable is pretty bloody impressive.

Strong team. I really, really hope Scott can stand up and put the past 7 months behind him.

Those Cows outside backs..wow !
Botman’s going to have to mix things up with a multi this week. At least 5 make that list! I’m looking at you number 4,5,6,14,15!
Ata Mariota’s #1 fan. Bless his cotton socks.
