Wests Tigers to host Canberra Raiders in 2021 trial match

Wests Tigers will host the Canberra Raiders at Leichhardt Oval in an NRL trial match on Friday, 26th February in preparation for the 2021 NRL season. A kickoff time for the fixture will be announced closer to the date.

Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner said the pre-season fixture was an exciting one for fans to look forward to in the coming seasons.

“We thank the Wests Tigers for agreeing to be our trial opponents in 2021 and we look forward to hosting the return fixture in the pre-season of 2022 on the South Coast of NSW,” Furner said. “Our club is very much looking forward to kicking off our 2021 campaign against our old foes.”

This is a Wests Tigers "home" trial, so it is their choice. But it is ridiculous playing trial matches in Sydney. I guess COVID protocols could be a factor... but these are the matches that should be held in the bush. It simply should not be happening. The Sydney clubs travel significantly less than other clubs, but they still can't organise a pre season trip to the bush.

With the exception of the game at St Mary’s against Parra a couple of years ago, which was basically a Mounties trial, when is the last time we played a trial in Sydney?

I can’t remember it happening during my time.

Maybe Tigers members just like a day out at Leichart? There match and I can see plenty of reasons why a merger club gives a nod to tradition or heritage whenever they can.

The last mob that played a "home" trial in country NSW against the Raiders, ended up sacking two of their players by the time they got home.

Perhaps the Tigers are just being risk adverse!

It does seem a bit strange that we are playing our trial against the team we play in Round 1. Sounds from the tone of the press conference that this might have been agreed before the draw was done.

Great ground. Beer lines and no parking notwithstanding. Better to head up to the pubs in Norton Street then walk down.

Don’t know for sure, but wouldn’t be surprised. This is the only one announced so far. Hopefully there’s another one.

Hence why you get half cut before you arrive. Won't be as much of an issue for a trial no doubt.

I can understand the appeal of Leichhardt. The setting on the edge of the harbour, in the middle parkland with all the old trees, is spectacular on a sparkling Sydney day. Not that you see the harbour view inside the ground or on the approach from the city. Streams of people walking down the narrow old suburban streets to the ground adds atmosphere. The view of higgelty pigglety houses peaking into the ground is quaint. Some people find the idea of a hill to be quaint. The ticket office and gate is old and quaint.

However the facilities for spectators inside are primitive for the bulk of people. Even the “modern” stand, built in 1980, is basic by today’s standards. The access to and from the ground is a nightmare. Getting away from the ground after a match by car takes an hour as the roads clog. It simply shouldn’t be hosting NRL games any longer.

It’s worth noting the standard of the ground is still significantly better than the ground at Wagga, where we take one of our home games.

Leichhardt is only suited for matches that would attract at most a few thousand people these days... it’s a NSW Cup standard venue. I’d say that makes it suitable for a trial game... except for the fact it’s in Sydney.

Never been to Leichhardt Oval. Might be a reasonable time to check it out. For all the reasons outlined by GE I wouldn't attempt to see a regular season game there.

Thanks GE. This year's successful Storm side played 2 trials. One against the Warriors and one against the Cowboys. It proved successful for them.

With the 2020 season running longer than usual I suppose there is a reason for only 1 trial in 2021. I would still prefer the Raiders to play 2 trials though.

The value of trials depends on what you want to do with them.

If it's a genuine trial with players vying for positions, you aren't going to go near it with your senior players. If it's used as a hit-out before the season starts, then I can see why the coach often only plays 40 minutes with the senior team to blow out the cobwebs and the second 40 mins to give the young blokes (or guys coming back from injuries) a run.

Realistacally our side picks itself barring 1 or 2 bench spots so not exactly a selection trial, add in next season we play the tigers rd1 you wouldn't expect a really serious hitout for the top team.

Yeah, in this circumstance I reckon one trial is the way to go.

By far our biggest issue is having no team in a genuine second tier competition.

Honestly, I think the whole bench is up for grabs, Croker’s spot, both wings and second row are all up in the air this year

Not sure why you think it’s one or two bench spots

I just meant you could have said the centres as much as the wings. Don’t think Scott has more of a lock on a spot than Raps has on a wing.

Just about everyyearRick has been coach he has pulled a young player up into first grade on the strength of his training field efforts. Cotric and Simonsson stand out, Horse as well. He loves to be seen to reward effort.

So exactly my point that it’s a bit more than “just two bench spots”?

No. I don’t think any of the bench, CHN or the three quarters (until Croker gets back) are “walk up starters” and I hope our coach feels the same way

Potentially. He's had shoulder surgery and I guess it's 50/50 whether he'll be right to go by round 1.

I remember early reports about the injury saying the recovery time potentially had him missing the first couple of rounds but subsequently he's done interviews saying his goal is round 1 and if everything goes 100% in his direction he thinks that's achievable.

Matt Allwood was an interesting one. He's pulled guys like Clay Priest into teams too. Fair to say he doesn't only pick on reputation.
