Canberra half George Williams on NRL pre-season and Ryan Sutton's accent

Post by Godeangogogogo »

George Williams has become a columnist for BBC Sport.

Canberra half George Williams on NRL pre-season and Ryan Sutton's accent

The National Rugby League season is just a few weeks away and I'm starting to feel the buzz, the excitement. We had a media day this week, and that made the start of it all feel more real.

Being interviewed by the media down here is always interesting, with my Wigan accent. Some people look at me and don't know what I'm talking about, but I've just learned to talk a bit slower and they understand me. Ryan Sutton's got an Australian girlfriend now, and he's totally changed. I wish our mates back home could hear his accent because he'd get slaughtered. He thinks I'm just winding him up but honestly, he's actually got an Aussie accent.

A column on BBC Sport is a really big deal.

The NRL gets zero written coverage here - and not much more for the British game - so it's nice to see.

Ryan Sutton came to the Club 82 event at Raiders HQ last Saturday night, sat and had pizza with him for a while. He does not, I repeat not, have an Australian accent... from this Aussie's ears!

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.
