A **** back on the bench please Ricky. It is ridiculous to run the risk of having anyone of five players go down without any adequate cover for them. Just **** insane.
It's not he's completely averse to it - we were playing with one there for most games last season until CHN showed up. If you don't have a player like Bateman who can still play there and has done good time there then you're having a **** bubble bath.

You speak as though an outside back is standard on the bench these days. Correct me if I’m wrong but only two teams have named an outside back on their bench this weekend ( Storm with Hynes and Dragons with Williame).afgtnk wrote:A **** back on the bench please Ricky. Assuming all are fit from your knights game and Scott is still out Who is your back that you bring in?

I haven't had a look across all the teams named - would you say they've got someone in their forwards name that can more than adequately play in the backs though?RTW wrote: ↑April 9, 2021, 10:47 pmYou speak as though an outside back is standard on the bench these days. I mean that's the main problem for us here. I had no issue with CHN playing on the bench last year instead of one when we had Bateman. Poor Elliott was battling his hardest but not up to it, while Croker looks like he's running in treacle these days.

He needs to be dropped like Papa was dropped after a hard word from Sticky. It might bring out the best in the skipper.

Re: 2020 Rd 6 V Eels: Teams and Previews
Not the team I would pick but the 17 Ricky might actually go with. No way Croker is going anywhere.
I don't think he's about to move Simonsen on yet either- he was pretty decent defensively early (didn't get to watch much of the end though, so caveat). And he's been making his share of yards this season, it just his attack doesn't have much about it. I can see why people are tempted to try Valemi or someone there, I just think RIcky is trying to build a tight defensive unit and Simonsen suits that more than a rookie who will maybe make an error most weeks. Rapa gets away with his because of all else he brings that is unique.
I really don't like Havilii and Starling on the same bench. We don't get the best of either and it's unbalanced. I thought we needed more than 4 runs from Havilii in his 60 mins or so game time. He's a strong runner, maybe we just "lost" him when our shape got weird.
CHN would be a better bench option for impact and versatility (edge, middle, he'd probably do a decent Idris/Suli style centre impersonation in a pinch) and allow us to carry a genuine back if we don't double up on bench hookers. Ricky has shown willingness to use Kris as a 2nd rower- and he's certainly in that hard running, likes contact, Luke Lewis centre/backrower body shape so he's a versatile bench option who has earnt his spot in the 17 imo.

Starling at hooker if Hodgo is out + Havilii onto the bench. If Hodgo plays then Havilii is out and Starling slides back to the bench.

What's the point in depth if you don't drop players for performing below par
Re: 2020 Rd 6 V Eels: Teams and Previews
I can only think of one vs Melbourne where he kind of crashed into the line with energy and burst through and made some yards but not a huge break as he was staggering kind of from crashing through. Surely he's been passed into space once or twice but it is actually becoming clear he doesn't have the instinct for positioning. He should be putting himself in position to at least get passed into a break or via an offload etc every now and then as a winger. And he doesn't seem to have the footwork to get himself clear on his own.Raiders666 wrote: ↑April 10, 2021, 8:19 am Has Simo ever made a line break? Serious question..I cannot remember.

Does he though? I see him rushing out a fair bit and even sometimes getting out muscled on that right.BadnMean wrote: ↑April 10, 2021, 8:24 am

Maybe it's not as bad as I recall though...
I dunno I think we just need some flair in the backline and Semi is probably the closest thing to that.
Re: 2020 Rd 6 V Eels: Teams and Previews
Simonsson cannot be in that 17, he adds very little and doesn’t even look threatening. I would be bringing in Semi quick smart.

I thought part of the benefit of Simo was his doubling as fullback. If he's not going to do that then I think he's playing very much like a squad player: solid, good effort plays, but not actually adding much extra
Not sure if I'd drop him, probably not, but Valemei not too far behind

Valemei needs to be In the 17 simple
Re: 2020 Rd 6 V Eels: Teams and Previews
We need that something extra, we currently have very little strike in our outside backs and it’s almost adding to our misery. I thought being bulked up this season that it would add a bit more to Simmonson’s running game, while he is solid defensively, I just think we are lacking strike power and it starts with our wingers.Canberra Milk wrote: ↑April 10, 2021, 8:50 am I thought part of the benefit of Simo was his doubling as fullback. Croker is going nowhere, let's face it. He is Ricky's favourite. But he doesn't deserve a spot in FG based on his form in the last year and we won't win comps or even get into a position to do so with him in the side. If Scott is fit, I hope Kris doesn't have to drop out. He deserves his place in the side.
Keep Starling on the bench, drop Havilii for CNH. I thought our forward pack got dominated. Drop Sia for Horse. Eels **** up his ankle last year so should be motivated to play well against them.
The Eels game is an important one for us now.

For those banging about that it's madness we don't have a back on the bench, let's not pretend that what we are doing is groundbreaking.
Out of this week's 16 named teams, only 5 are carrying a specialist back on the bench. It's really not that common at all. 11 other teams would have been in the same position we were last night.

Re: 2020 Rd 6 V Eels: Teams and Previews
Player availability aside out bench has to change. We've been caught out twice in 5 games having a bench full of middle forwards and a backup hooker. CHN is the obvious inclusion with his versatility. Form in reserve grade also justifies selection.
Starling is the superfluous player as he only plays hooker and Hodgo is 80 mins barring injury. Better off with Havili as backup for Hodgo because he can contribute as a middle forward. Starling is better served playing 80 mins in reserve grade than 10-15 minute cameos in firsts. That way he'll be match fit to slot in if Hodgo is out completely.

Out of this week's 16 named teams, only 5 are carrying a specialist back on the bench. It's really not that common at all. 11 other teams would have been in the same position we were last night.
It makes me sleep good at night. That's what counts.

If Scott is fit then Kris will play off the bench
Can't keep carrying both Havili and Starling

Agree but it's not so much having a specialist back. You need flexibility to cover a backline position if needed. Our bench was 3 middle forwards and a specialist hooker. Looking at team list the Titans are the only other team with a similar mix. Keep in mind they have Peachey at lock who can play halves or centre.IBG wrote: ↑April 10, 2021, 9:51 am For those banging about that it's madness we don't have a back on the bench, let's not pretend that what we are doing is groundbreaking.

Kris off the bench is a great option. Can play wing/centre/edge back row. Either that or start him on the wing for Simo.
