Fogarty will add something, Savage should provide a boost, but beyond that I fear it’s all the same names that saw us miss the 8. Needs more new faces I think.

Suttgod was arguably our most consistent forward this yr. Coaches love him. He will be top 17.Raiders_Pat wrote: ↑October 13, 2021, 12:59 pmIf Hodgson stays on, which I now think is likely at this point, then this is how we should start next year imo. The balance of our team however would look much better if we could trade Hodgson for a gun second rower or lock at a similar price.
I like Botmans suggested team, with the 2 changes (and 2 squabbling points):
1. Hodgo to 9, Starling 14 and Kris 18th.
2. Swap Suttgod and Tapine to split the go forward. I still wanna see both Papa and Tapine playing 50 odd mins, but we need 1 on the field at all times. But seeing Tarpz lack of fitness, it seems he needs the halftime break more than Papa, hence bench.
(3. Could probably squabble over Guler vs Horse vs Hola)
(4. Could also be Rushton vs Mooney)

I like Sutton and I wasn't a fan before this season. I would argue that he started the season well and tailed off toward the end. He was much more consistent than Guler though. Horsburgh is easily at the bottom of the list for me as far as our props go... he needs a lot more improvement to be a regular feature in the 17. I guess what I really meant is who will make the final cut round one out of Sutton/Guler/Hola/Horsburgh will likely be determined by how they shape up in the preseason. I guess Hola could also possibly be a surprise selection at second row and all three of them could fit in the 17.Matt wrote: ↑October 13, 2021, 4:04 pmSuttgod was arguably our most consistent forward this yr. I like Botman's team but Whitehead to lock can only work if Hodgson isn't in the team (which is what his selection is catering for) as he would be moving to lock after his stint at hooker and that would mean very short minutes for Whitehead... unless you'd be planning to move Whitehead to second row at some stage to give either Young or Harawira-Naera a spell. But then there's no space for Mooney either unless you plan to play him as a fifth prop in the rotation... your team would make more sense if Mooney was switched out for Rushton imo.

Re: 2022 predicted best top 17
I dont think Whitehead can play 80. Nor do I think Huddo can. So I wouldn't be upset to see some form of edge shuffle - ie Panthers 3 man rotation this yr OR Bunnies variation with Kolo going to prop.Raiders_Pat wrote: ↑October 13, 2021, 4:41 pmI like Sutton and I wasn't a fan before this season. OR
As I proposed when Peach was an option, potentially Hodgo, Starlo and Whitey all play 50 odd between 9 and 13. So, I'm sure either of those can work, but the latter is more logical.
Rookies like Mooney or Rushton usually get their 1st taste at prop in short mins. It simplifys their game.

Positional switches and filling voids: Biggest issue facing each NRL club this off-season
RAIDERS
Biggest issue: How to get Jack Wighton back to his best.
Analysis: It was a stunning form slump for Canberra’s biggest star Jack Wighton, who went from Dally M Medallist in 2020 to nearly losing his NSW jersey in 2021. The biggest thing that hurt Wighton and the team as a whole last season was the loss of halfback George Williams mid-season. Wighton is an excellent running five-eighth, but he needs a halfback to take care of the organising and kicking game to allow him to play to his strengths.

Wighton playing well didn't happen in a void either. He's not Thurston.
If Wighton's playing well for an extended period there's form around him too, and that's great for us.

Every club’s premiership window
RAIDERS
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has found a solution to his halfback problem with Jamal Fogarty signing but there’s no guarantee that will automatically unlock Jack Wighton’s attacking flair. Meanwhile, Josh Hodgson has been told he can look elsewhere so all of a sudden that British empire Canberra was building is falling down piece by piece.
After two successful seasons, 2021 should have been their year but the Raiders crumbled. It’s going to take some serious heavy lifting to get them straight back into contention next season.

Re: 2022 predicted best top 17
This aligns with what I’ve been saying. We are at least a season or two off being in contention. With that in mind selection decisions and team make up needs to be about ensuring you are developing the right players in the right positions to best place you for that shot at future success. If you select Rapa on a wing every game next season he won’t let you down and he’ll likely go better than other options. But is he the bloke you see winning a GF for us in 2024? I don’t. So by playing Rapa all next year you’re holding back the development of a young winger by 12 months.
News flash - we aren’t winning a comp in 2022, so whether we finish 16th, 10th or 5th isn’t as important as how we position ourselves on the path to building a team that might give it a good shake in 2023 and beyond. Rapa, Croker, Whitehead - there needs to be some serious refresh of some of our older players.

Re: 2022 predicted best top 17
If you look at the bulldogs potential side they can field in 22. There is a real chance they top us.
We must align to the speed of the new rules otherwise we will be left behind even further.
7 sorted (hopefully)
Attacking coach in
Club culture needs focus.
A few other key positions as well; eg like what to do with Savage and the young players coming through. There must be a clear path for them that aligns with the type of style we want to play.
All urgent and important.

We should have started that in 21 but we went for making the top 8 where perhaps the better call was to focus on development.
Re: 2022 predicted best top 17
Wighton is a running 5/8. Sam Williams at his best is a good 7, challenge is he hasn't proven to be able to play at that level for a longer period of time (e.g. more than a half) and therefore we revert back to what I think of as our "primitive" attack play.
1. Give Wighton the ball to run
2. Give Papalli the ball to run over the top and score close to the line
and maybe that's it ??... nothing else on our reputer ... no clear strategy with the ball.
Watch the Matty Johns podcast where he discusses attack with Cronk. Two great brains of our game.. they give an array of examples each week on what top teams do in attack. One that sticks out for me was the evolution of Yeo for the panthers and how he holds up the ball and plays as a passing lock and then what "options" that gives Clearly and their outside backs.
Point being here is that for Wighton to be at his best we need Wighton running to be 1 of 5 to 10 options... not 1 of 2 options.

I agree Benda - I don’t think either Sutton or Whitehead will give us what we need in that 13 role. Sutton doesn’t have the skill set and Whitehead will be well past his best and in decline in 2023-24 when we need to be hitting our straps. Developing, buying or moulding a good ball playing 13 needs to be a priority.benda wrote: ↑October 18, 2021, 10:49 amWighton is a running 5/8. I wouldn’t have Simonsson or Croker in the first grade (I’d have Savage or Timoko but you’re probably closer to what will Ricky pick)jacko6 wrote: ↑October 18, 2021, 4:10 pm NRL Team

I don’t know what you do with the backrowers/lock position. I think Whitehead’s future is at lock but then we don’t have many options at second row (maybe Kris as a smoky or even Clay Webb/Harry Rushton as a real smoky - I see that as a real area of concern now so hopefully somebody steps up). I really like Young as a bench forward or even starting at prop - I think it worked really well in the 2019 finals but we moved away from that. I see him as a Gallenesque type of small, strong but agile middle but when played on the edge seems to run the wrong lines or stifle the attack - I could be wrong and he could develop into a good backrower but that is what I’m seeing atm)
I’d like to think that Mooney is closer to first grade then where you have put him.
If Hodgson goes then we need somebody who can at least pinch hit or provide some sort of versatility in the halves/hooker role. Maybe they see Schneider or
Trevilyan as an option there - it would be gutsy but maybe that is what they are thinking in lieu of a signing.
I think looking at those sides it is a rebuilding year unfortunately. The team could surprise me but we will be going from a very stable and experienced side to having to a very young side particularly due to either injury or if form of players don’t improve

I’d be more excited to see the upward trajectory of that NSW Cup team than the decline of your NRL team.jacko6 wrote: ↑October 18, 2021, 4:10 pm NRL Team

Re: 2022 predicted best top 17
I think he does, yes. Id have CNK on the wing, that way if you want to play the split FB role - defense and offence - its a easier switch. Put it this way, CNK is quicker than Rapa and no 1 is questioning him.Billy Walker wrote: ↑October 13, 2021, 2:54 pmYou reckon CNK has the wheels to be an effective winger?
Re: 2022 predicted best top 17
Simonsson and Croker are not in our best 17. Back three should consist of Savage, HSS and Rapana. Simonsson has a lot to prove stilljacko6 wrote: ↑October 18, 2021, 4:10 pm NRL Team

Re: 2022
With Elliott looking likely to come in, I reckon the club are aiming to play him at 13. I had hoped a Peachey like player could be our man, but I sense Elliott at 13 with Whitehead and CHN to line up in the second row. Is okay but I definitely see it as our weakness.
I guess the final piece of the puzzle is the Hodgo situation and if he does leave, we must be bringing in someone as a back up to Starling.
1. Savage, 2. HSS, 3. CNK, 4. Timoko, 5. Rapana, 6. Wighton, 7. Fogarty, 8. Papalii, 9. Starling, 10. Sutton, 11. CHN, 12. Whitehead, 13. Elliott
14. Hodgo/signing, 15. Young, 16. Tapine, 17. Mooney
18. Frawley, 19. Trevilyan, 20. Guler. 21. Simonsson, 22. Croker, 23. Horsburgh, 24. Hola, 25. Kris, 26. Anderson, 27. Schneider, 28. Williams, 29. Rushton, 30. Valemei
Why we need Williams on top of Fogarty, Schnieder and Frawley, God only knows but here we are...
Did I miss anyone?

Every NRL team’s 2022 pass mark
RAIDERS
The team from the nation’s capital is coming off a tumultuous season. The injury to star fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad hurt badly, the injuries kept mounting and George Williams’ mid-season departure was a major disruption. Next season they welcome back veteran Jarrod Croker, Bailey Simonsson, Corey Harawira-Naera, Tom Starling and Xavier Savage. Young gun Savage could be truly special and Jamal Fogarty could prove the perfect halves partner for superstar Jack Wighton to rediscover his best form. Adam Elliott may prove a clever buy and Ricky Stuart will be expecting improvement from the Green Machine.

Re: 2022
I’ve got us 6-8 probably 6 points plus outside the top 1-5, we had so much going on behind the sense last season we have to improve with all the bull dust going on.
