Very true - I also think there are two possible reasons for the Telly story.:

(1) He’s trying to recapture some high moral ground so he isn’t the villain should he ever return to the NRL; or

(2) He is genuinely upset about how he was treated and feels he has an axe to grind.

If it is the first reason it speaks poorly of George’s character but if it’s the second you have to conclude the club could have handled this a lot better.
The story explains the reasoning... "hesitant to tell his story, but with his reputation taking a battering, he wanted to set the record straight".

So I'd say it is a mix of both.

He wanted a release prior to the end of his contract but also wanted the couple hundred thousand owed to him this season. Simple as that really. Unfortunately he overestimated his leverage, which was not much given how the team was performing. If we were a Premiership threat the club would have accomodated him.

Unfortunately for Georgie boy the club called his bluff and made the decision for him - get home and get your mental health right. Could they have been "kinder" doing it? Sure, but this is big business. None of our employees would be going out of their way to accommodate us if we pulled a similar move.

100% back the club in this instance. Would have been a terrible precident to set if they'd submitted to the demands.

I loved having George here and wish it could've worked out nicer. However, he signed a contract and then pleaded "home sick" which is not enough and has been used before round here.

He pens a farewell from Raiders Fans? As in he’s written a farewell from the perspective of a Raiders Fan?

I wonder if he got any inspiration from this place

And it was behind us when his exit deal was settled and he made his twitter post. This article stinks of an unnecessary parting shot while ben creaghing out of the country
Yep, I agree
No need for the parting shots but hopefully the club will let him have the last word and finally take a high road

I would have taken more notice of what the article said if it explained what the club did for him and what they offered in response to the previous 3 times he asked for a release.

It's one thing to want the club to support you, it's another to expect them to fully facilitate to your go-home plan or move-to-the-beach plan

Once he gets home he might realise it worked out alright for him in the end - he got a bit of cash and he got to go home asap

He's now **** over Wigan as well.

Wigan Warriors club statement: George Williams

Wigan Warriors confirm that George Williams will not be returning to join them after agreeing to join another Super League club.

Chairman, Ian Lenagan, commented: “Wigan had a signed agreement in place for George Williams to return to Wigan once his stint in the NRL had finished. During our discussions to bring him back following his decision to leave Canberra, George made it clear personally to me and to Kris Radlinski that he had had discussions with another club and, even though he appreciated what Wigan had done for him, he preferred a new challenge and hence did not want to return to Wigan.

“Wigan could have forced the issue legally but that’s not how we operate. If a player is emotionally absent, then there is no point in him being at Wigan.

“We wish George well in his career and also in life, as he embarks on life’s greatest journey as a father.”

George Williams said: “Wigan acted professionally and honourably throughout and tried their very hardest to retain me such that finance was not an issue. I thank them for agreeing not to take legal action against me, even though their signed option allowed that course of action, in the spirit of allowing me to commence playing quickly again with a World Cup place for England in prospect.”

Paul Kent gave it to George Williams on Triple M over his farewell story. Interesting that he confirmed that George and other players got their noses out of joint over the club leaking and it has now been confirmed that the source was not from within the club and that players have over reacted based on false rumours.

Couldn't have said it better.

Williams ended up being a complete dud and was a large part of our season going off the rails.

You'd have to say it's pretty convenient that Stuart's public mouth piece is confirming the source of the leaks was not within the club

Except it was Weidler not Kent who broke the homesickness story and Weidler confirmed it wasn't leaked from the club, it was leaked by an Agent.

Not news, by George
Danny Weidler

At the core of the George Williams story, as told to News Ltd, is anger that the Raiders leaked the story of his homesickness to the media. He was 100 per cent certain of the fact.

I broke the story that Williams wanted out of his Canberra contract to go home. It came from player agent sources, not the Raiders. The club’s only involvement was to confirm it was true when I checked the information. And, no, the Raiders had nothing to do with this item appearing.

Edit: oh wait, I wrongly thought he backflipped on a recent deal. Not as bad as I thought but still, makes it less likely the Raiders were being complete pricks at least

I just never thought a Player Manager would be a party to disclosing information to the media in the interest of themselves and their client.

Anyway I’m off to my Q Anon meeting before heading over the horizon to my flat earth society catch up.

George Williams on his Raiders exit

After what has been a crazy few weeks, we're finally back in England after my release by Canberra Raiders. It was pretty big news in Australia, a few tales were told and it ended up being a frustrating end. It was a disappointing way to finish with the Raiders as I did enjoy it there, it was good and I was hoping to do good things there. But everything happens for a reason, I suppose.

That update with Wigan is hilarious, for a number of reasons.

If we had of just agreed to a release for the end of this year, before the season even began mind you, we would have saved a lot of heartache and more than likely our actual results this year.

According to Kent in that radio link above, we actually won in mediation and George didn't get the full year of pay (take that with a table spoon of salt), so in some weird way the clubs position was at least on paper vindicated.
BUT, just like when you win a fight with your Mrs, that WIN comes at an even greater COST.

We get to miss the 8, get weeks of bad press, sections of our players revolt, certain players WAGs disillusioned with the club and future, amongst other issues; But we can lean on the fact we did the right thing by the Raiders club and proved George was wrong.

The thing is though - even if the club is vindicated in the end (the story wasn't leaked within, the club won in mediation), the narrative has already been set and the club comes out looking the worst in all of this to the neutral observer.

Literally nothing good has come from any of this from the club's perspective.

George Williams has signed a multi-year deal with the Warrington Wolves after his Canberra Raiders departure

Discarded former Raiders halfback George Williams has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Warrington Wolves as he looks to resurrect his rugby league career in time for the October World Cup.
