I like our chances more without wighton. We could conjure up another win like the one vs manly where we played with patients and applied constant pressure and a strong defensive effort.

Yeah, some doctors have got into serious trouble with that kind of thing.

Canberra Raiders have that NRL finals feeling as top-eight belief builds

The Canberra Raiders have the belief they can push into the NRL top eight and make a finals charge.

"That's been our focus coming into the back end of the year is just to try and string as many wins together and try and push for that seventh or eighth spot," Hudson Young said. "I think we're more than capable of doing that. We've just got that belief in the team now and it's starting to show."

Hip recovery points way for Corey Harawira-Naera's form

A niggling hip-pointer injury disrupted Corey Harawira-Naera's pre-season, but the Canberra Raiders second-rower's put that behind him to hit top form and become an offloading machine.

"I missed out on a chunk of pre-season so I feel like it took me a while to get my lungs and my legs, and get used to the system as well," Harawira-Naera said.

Whitehead reportedly requires another week on the sideline. The Raiders will see how Wighton and Savage go at training on Tuesday before making a call on them.

Our first game against them this year was, unfortunately, a sign of things to come. Moses kept kicking to Rapana in the corner, and they would win the tackle against Aekins/Croker on subsequent carries, dominating field position. When we did get any field position at all, we looked rushed and clunky (this was the game after which Stuart told Hodgson some “hard truths” for overplaying his hand). We tired as the game went on (due to lack of field position and not scoring points when we did have it), and they ran away with it.

Their sweep play on the left (Gutherson to Sivo) is their go to play, but it is their forward pack who build momentum for them, through hard running and second phase. Mahoney loves a crash ball, too. CHN has a huge, huge, job up against Papalii on the edge - he did a good job protecting Williams last week (and saved a certain four pointer), but it is a big jump in class this week.

If we are serious about this year, this is the game to make a statement. I don’t think we can get close to matching Penrith, Melbourne or Manly (with Turbo), but I honestly think we can get Souths and Parra on our day, if we play smart. Parra’s weakness is they will panic if they start losing the field position battle, and if they fall behind, their playmakers take the wrong options. The Dragons actually showed the blue print to beating them earlier this year - intense physicality in the middle, win the contact and make them come off their own line, forcing them into mistakes as they try and take short cuts. When it doesn’t come easy for them, they struggle. In saying all of that - they are deserved favourites, and should beat us comfortably if we play like we have been for most of the season.

Really disappointed to hear this. Enjoyed his play and gave me hope last week. We need to play our youngsters though like Timoko and HSS going forward - give them a chance to show what they are capable of, and not slow guys like Aekins. Move Rapana to fullback until Bailey is available to come back.

Yes not great news.

Personally i think i would put Rapana to fullback (he's been swapping with Savage last few weeks anyway) and HSS on the wing.
Frawley in for Jack this week too i suppose. Is what it is.

Based on the fact we've said we won't re sign him I really hope they don't just put Aekins there for the sake of it

I'd rather see Raps there and HSS/Timoko on the wing

Bit light on the bench but with hodgo playing massive minutes at 13 can probably afford it.

If you're running with that then put Kris on the bench and start HSS

Least Kris can play in the pack, HSS would get a token run at the end

2021 Rd 19 NRL teams: Raiders V Eels

Canberra Raiders V Parramatta Eels
Thursday 22 July, 7:50pm
Robina Stadium
Tickets: Click here
TV coverage: Nine, Fox League Channel 502
Radio: ABC, Mix 106.3, 2CC

The Canberra Raiders have named their squad for Thursday night’s match against the Parramatta Eels at Robina Stadium.

Xavier Savage has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a shoulder injury, so Jordan Rapana shifts to fullback and Harley Smith-Shields plays his first NRL match of the year on the wing.

Jack Wighton will miss at least one match with a rib injury, which sees Matt Frawley return to the side at five-eighth, while Elliott Whitehead will miss another match with a shoulder injury.

Matt Timoko returns to the team this week on the interchange bench and replaces Ryan James in the 17.

Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart said it was very disappointing news for Xavier considering the work he'd put in to get his opportunity but knew he would have another chance in the future.

"I really feel for Xavier as he has worked extremely hard since last November to get to play NRL," he said. "His commitment to hard work got him his start and I know that attitude will get him back there."

Stuart said despite the club's injury challenges over the past two seasons, he was proud of the way the group continues to rise to the challenges before them.

"Injuries the last two seasons have really tested the squad. You have seasons where you cop a spate of injuries but we have copped it back to back," Stuart said. "They have all been long-term or season-ending injuries and it asks plenty of questions towards the resilience of your players, but there is no surrender in this group of boys.

"Injury is not something you can control but you can definitely control effort and we will keep turning up with plenty of it."

Irrespective of whether or not we have a chance this weekend, I like the inclusion of Frawley, Timoko and HSS.

Ricky could have gone more conservative and went with Havili (shifting Hodgo to HB), Aekins and James.

So long as promising kids are continuing to get their shot, this year will at a minimum continue to hold some intrigue for me.

I feel sorry for Caleb as it is obvious he will not be retained next year and he is probably our 5th choice FB now; but to me he just symbolises that freezing night of failure up in Gosford a couple months ago.

Might be the best play of a bad hand there and almost within the realms of Ricky actually doing it... until you got to the back on the bench. Ricky needs all 3 spare bench spots to be forwards or there might be a middle player injury which would mean someone else would have to play the 10 minutes he uses the spare forward for! Carnage! Better to be playing our props-as-locks at centre for 70 minutes than to have a back try to take a few hit ups from minutes 71-80!
