Knowing the guy that writes the article he does read forums and talk to raiders fans but he's also a season pass sharks fan. So you will see the occasional odd suggestion and hot take too.Hong Kong Raider wrote: ↑September 7, 2021, 10:22 pmThe contents of this article is what we are mostly thinking on GH Forum. It's like he's browsed our Forum and read the posts, and then wrote the article. I agree with it except the Wighton moving to fullback suggestion. Did we get to the bottom of Kris' unavailability for the Roosters game ? Some of Ricky's team selections have been baffling.greeneyed wrote: ↑September 7, 2021, 9:45 pm Is it time for change in Canberra?
Thursday night's horror result confirmed what we have all known for weeks now - that the 2021 Canberra Raiders aren't up to finals footy. I wrote previously that the Raiders were 2021s underachievers and an overwhelming amount of readers agreed. Nothing short of a comfortable finals finish could match expectations.

Canberra Raiders' great expectations end in disappointment and green shoots
It was a season that promised so much, Charles Dickens would've been licking his lips. But in the end it only delivered disappointment and controversy for the Canberra Raiders - although there were a few lime green shoots to provide some hope for the future.
Those expectations suffered a near-fatal blow with a mid-season slump that saw the Green Machine win just two of 11 games to leave them 13th on the NRL ladder and longshots to make the eight.

You forget that we were 13th at one stage. What a poor season.

Except Rickzone’s first season, we’ve finished 10th every year we haven’t been in the top 8. Weirdly comforting cause we’ve gone from 10th straight into the top 4 twice.

NRL season review of the Green Machine: F for ‘Faders’
NRL season review of the Green Machine: F for ‘Faders’
With the NRL regular season done and dusted, the finals series is now in week two and for the first time since 2018, the Canberra Raiders aren’t there.
It was a stinker of a year for the Green Machine. On the back of making the preliminary final last year and the grand final in 2019, the 2021 campaign never got out of second gear and oscillated between bumbling performances and off-field sagas.

Re: 2021 Season reviews
The statistical indicators have complex constructions - but essentially they are aggregate indicators of performance of the players - and which make a difference to winning results. WARG stands for "wins above reserve grade" and TPR stands for the "Taylor player rating". Basically, the larger, the better.
All the individual Raiders forwards pretty much went backwards this year. As a group, the backs were slightly better than last year, but still a fair way below their best recent year of 2016. The forwards were down a bit, the bench up a bit. But the group that really plunged were the playmakers...
When you express that in English, it is as you'd expect... but interesting to see nonetheless.

NRL season report card: How all the teams fared in 2021
Canberra Raiders
Ladder finish: 10th. Regular season record: 10-14
It was the season that no one saw coming as the Green Machine went from finals glory to missing out altogether. On the back of reaching the 2019 Grand Final and the preliminary final in 2020, nothing went right for the Raiders this season as Ricky Stuart's men fell flat and finished 10th. There were second-half fade-outs, out-of-form stars, injuries, social media jibes and the dramatic exit of George Williams to summarise the chaos that was Canberra this season. The Raiders missed English second-rower John Bateman on field, while the absence of Jarrod Croker and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad due to injury was felt. Canberra will need to find a suitable halves partner for Jack Wighton as they look to kick back into gear next season.

Raiders: 2021 season by the numbers
Having reached the 2019 grand final and last year's preliminary finals, another top-eight finish was expected from Ricky Stuart's men this season but instead they struggled to a 10th-place finish with a mid-season slump they failed to recover from.
The departures of star England forward John Bateman and metre-eating outside back Nick Cotric at the end of 2020 hurt the Raiders, with the team's go-forward taking a hit in 2021. Star fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (161 metres per game) was restricted to just eight matches due to injury, with eventual Mal Meninga Medalist Jordan Rapana (165 metres per game) topping the tally at the club.

A few interesting stats there, but this story doesn't have the statistical insights that equivalent stories have had in previous years. The gutting of NRL digital starting to have effect. The departure of John Bateman had very little to do with the lack of go forward, for a start.

Re: 2021 Season reviews
The thing that truly sticks out to me in those stats is the backs. This only uptick in performance across the team. You take out the playmakers (6 and 7) and the rest of the results for the backline rise on the previous year. Surely our fullback results could only have dropped as a result of CNK’s injury and our wingers were consistent with Rap’s slight improvement on the previous year offset against the rotating circus on the other wing. That means our year on year improvement all came down to a change in the centres. Stats don’t lie…. As bad as we were in 2021, two rookies in the 3 and 4 jumpers provided an overall uptick in backline output than what JC and Scott turned out in 2020. Weird thing is, in the Scott season review we all noted he was in career best form for us prior to being stood down. Maybe Jarrod’s poor defence and limited attack were holding us back more than we realised?greeneyed wrote: ↑October 3, 2021, 4:11 pm

What if every game finished at halftime in 2021?
Would you believe it if we told you the Cronulla Sharks were a top-four team during the first half of games this season? Well, it’s 100 per cent true. The Sharks might have been the biggest surprise to emerge from this analysis, but the Gold Coast Titans finished fifth, and the Canberra Raiders were also in the top eight, with the Sharks and Raiders’ second halves letting them down badly throughout the season.

We have looked at what the NRL would have looked like if every game only consisted of the first half, so it’s only fair that we follow it up with the second half picture. While the first half snapshot saw some surprises across the ladder, the second half was a little more on par with what the final ladder actually looked like, albeit with some shuffling of the order. In fact, the entire top eight and bottom eight were the same as what the final order was. Raiders 11th.

Re: 2021 Season reviews
I would be interested to know if the results for second halves matched possession. Did possession percentages change between 1st and 2nd halves for the Raiders and did this track with the match results?
