Who is the one player you wish had never left the Raiders?

Post by greeneyed »

Interesting topic, brought up by The Daily Telegraph.

Some responses saying John Bateman. I’m not unhappy about that given all we now know. Someone said Ben Kennedy and I can see why.

But surely Glenn Lazarus is the biggest loss in Raiders history? Foundation stone for premierships at the Broncos and Storm, local junior.

Todd Carney

and i say that because if the end game is he never leaves, the only path i see to that is that he would have had to grow up and fix his off field behaviour early in his career... had that happened, having a mature committed Todd Carney for 10 years would have been a great time for Raiders fans.

Imagine a world where Carney, Dugan and Fergo all buckled down together at the Raiders from about 2010-2015 instead of hitting the rooftop Breezers.

That did hurt. Captain, kissed the badge… and then left the second Elliott walked out and he had an out in his contract.

1. Clyde/Stuart I don’t think it changed our fortunes but hated seeing them on Bulldogs colours.
2. Wiki absolutely loved him as a player and it stunk how they got him.
3. Ben Kennedy out of all my choices he is the one that would have really made a difference if he stayed

Easily Schiff for me. I was only a young lad when he was going around but I bawled my eyes out when I heard he was heading up north. Schiff made me fall in love with the Raiders. I even supported QLD the year he was picked!

Lazzo and Ben Kennedy and one other so far not mentioned. Luke Priddis. He went on to win Premierships at 2 other clubs in the hooker position and we kept Simon Woolford.......

This deserves another mention.

The Todd Carney saga also hurts because he really could have had a special career.

Of the greats, Lazo was a big loss. Kennedy too. Stuart and Clyde's careers were all but over when they were punted, but that move completely destroyed our culture.

I'm actually quite happy Milf and TPJ moved on. Both would have been on the type of crazy money here that our 2016 and 2019 runs wouldn't have happened.

Lazzo- he played 8 seasons and 160+ games winning comps at 2 other clubs.

But I wonder what might have been different for Peter Jackson if he hung around in Canberra

1. Wiki - it was particularly hard to cop when it was revealed NZ cheated the cap to get him.
2. Schifcoske - one of the most underrated players in my opinion.
3. Ricky/Clyde - as mentioned above, they were way past their best but it killed the club culture. Also responsible for Ricky's current problem with signing veterans to contracts that are waaaaay too long.

Wiki, losing his leadership was massive. At least in the case of Lazzo it didn't seem to make much of a impact on our performance.

Another one that's forgotten a bit is Furner leaving at 29 for the UK. He was still in his prime and it would've helped the club a lot to stagger his leaving with Daleys.
