2021 Highs and Lows: Worst moment

2021 Highs and Lows: Worst moment

Every year, the readers of The Greenhouse vote on the highs and lows of the season just past. The Players of the Year are determined by the Fans' Choice voting, but all the other categories are determined by fan polls.

In this poll we are voting for the Canberra Raiders' Worst Moment of the Year. Sadly, it was a year marked by poor performances on field, and controversy off field. If there is a moment not nominated in the poll, please post your selection. You have one vote in this poll.

The nominations are:

Raiders lose to Warriors after missed forward pass: In the Round 3 loss to the Warriors, the Raiders lost Joe Tapine after 10 minutes to an ankle injury. They lost Ryan James and Sebastian Kris a few minutes later, after they clashed heads while attempting a tackle. None of them could return. Before 15 minutes had elapsed, the Raiders were down to just 14 men. The ultimate difference between the teams was a cruel one - a Warriors try scored from a blatant forward pass, with the referee, Henry Perenara, right there to see it. The NRL later admitted the Raiders were robbed by the call.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad suffers serious neck injury: Raiders fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad suffered a serious neck injury in the Round 5 loss to the Panthers - which eventually required surgery for a bulging disc. He was expected to miss the rest of the season, but was able to make an early comeback in Round 23. However, he was restricted to just six starting appearances - and eight in total.

Josh Hodgson stands down as co-captain: In early May, it was confirmed that Josh Hodgson had stood down as Raiders co-captain. It took three weeks for the decision to be publicly released, with Hodgson's call apparently the result of coach Ricky Stuart signalling that the hooker would be starting on the bench, following the Round loss to the Eels. It sparked a round of rumours, linking Hodgson to other clubs, with discontent in the camp becoming public.

Second half fade against Cowboys: The manner of the 26-24 loss to the Cowboys in Round 7... well it was simply very hard to take. The Raiders led 24-6 with three minutes to half time. Eighteen points. The Cowboys then scored an unanswered 20 points, keeping the Raiders scoreless for the rest of the game.

Five game losing streak: When the Raiders lost to the Knights, 24-16, in Round 9, it was the fifth loss in a row. That had not happened since the dark days of 2014. Another second half capitulation, one that seemed to happen every week. In those five matches, the Canberra Raiders had scored eight points and conceded 93 in the second 40. The Raiders led 16-0 at half time. They did not score another point in the match, and conceded 24 unanswered points. This was a loss to a team that had been sitting in 11th place on the ladder. A team with a makeshift halves combination, that had been humiliated by the Roosters last week.

Homesick George Williams released: In late May, homesick English half, George Williams was released by the club, after several weeks of public conjecture about his desire to leave the club early.

Curtis Scott involved in nightclub incident: In early June, it emerged that Curtis Scott had been involved in a nightclub incident at Kokomo's nightclub in Civic a week earlier. He was disciplined by the NRL and the club took the decision to terminate his contract in late August.

Fans stream out early: The Raiders produced one of their worst performances in many years in going down to the Titans, 44-6, at Canberra Stadium in Round 16. There was no other word for it, than diabolical. The Titans had their biggest ever win and equalled their highest ever points tally. It was the Raiders' biggest loss since the 54-12 drubbing at the hands of the Warriors in Auckland back in 2014. The Titans came into the match sitting in 13th place on the competition ladder. The effort was not there. Too many players showed little enthusiasm and a lack of pride in the jersey.

Fall at the last hurdle: With their season on the line, the Canberra Raiders saved one of their worst performances of the year for their last - losing to the Roosters 40-16 in the final round. The Roosters had been ravaged by injury this season, but compared to the Raiders, they looked like world beaters. It was a contest in the early stages, with the Raiders taking a 12-6 lead at the 20 minute mark. It was all downhill from there. The Raiders did not score again until a consolation try for Harley Smith-Shields in the 78th minute. The Raiders produced error after error, bombing their own chances and handing them to the Roosters. Turnovers and penalties meant the the Raiders had little possession - and you can't win football games without the football.

As bad as loosing your potential long term half back is I’m gonna have to vote on the Titans game.
I had never ever turned off a raiders game in 20+ years of support up until then….
That was diabolical

I agree with you afgtnk. The Raiders were left with a team without a consistent FG quality No 7 and the handling of GWilly left the players split into camps. All of this showed on the footy field. Hodgo gave away the Co-Captaincy and I for one wondered why. Then he came out publicly in support of GWilly and I reckon it was then clear that the turmoil over the GWilly departure was a part of it.
