Players meet to demand seat at table for game’s biggest issues
Rule changes, the NRLW competition, proposed increases in fines and potential changes to the judiciary and match-review process will be the key topics broached in a landmark meeting of leading player representatives on Tuesday.
For the first time in its history, the Rugby League Players Association will formally discuss the direction of the women’s and men’s game at the same time with representatives from the competitions. The meeting of a new Player Advisory Group [PAG] will give the players a united voice as they seek a seat at the table to work through the respective challenges faced. Canberra star Josh Hodgson is one of more than a dozen PAG representatives who will dial in on Tuesday.

Shouldn't he try and do that inhouse before doing it for the NRL.
Clearly we have more pressing issues as a club, rather than the NRL with the rule changes.

Yes, the players should have some input to the rules.
But they also need to adapt to the rules in front of them a loooooot quicker than they did the past 2 yrs

Josh Hodgson to get in there and push for grindball rules
"5 point tries if from a crash ball"
"Early kicks result in 5 tackle set for the position"

Re: Josh Hodgson part of push for players to be heard on rule changes
I think your crash ball rule is confusing and unworkable. Suggest the more specific "Tries scored from a pass within 2m of the tryline score 4+2 pts (conversion to come)"Canberra Milk wrote: ↑September 21, 2021, 5:43 pm Josh Hodgson to get in there and push for grindball rules

Because of how the NRL rule comittee thinks, this will also lead to "Tries scored from a pass within 2m of your goal line score 4+2 pts (conversion to come)". Genius.
How about for every tackle you kick early, they lose one tackle too, go back to kicking duels!
Re: Josh Hodgson part of push for players to be heard on rule changes
I'm all for the players having some input into the rules of the game they play. All players will probably have their 'wish lists'.
Mine would be:
Clearer signals from the Ref as to what a '6 more tackles' ruling was for. It is an unknown lottery for fans at present.
One unsuccessful Captains challenge allowed per half.
Attacking players holding onto the defender (or the jersey) trying to milk a penalty. Penalty to defending team resulting in game sped up due to attacking players concentrating on playing the ball.
Attacking players moving forward a couple of meters at the play the ball. This is 'unearned' momentum. Ref to give on field warning and next offender in the bin.
Attacking players setting up a wall to stop defenders from charging down a field goal attempt. Penalty to defending team.
Henry Perenara banned from the Bunker.

Hodgo is making a habit of popping his head up and making noise about the questions no one is asking…
Sticking up for George, sticking up for Curtis, sticking up for the players seemingly unable to adapt to a new style of footy…
Check the CT today, I assume he’s going to weigh in on the construction protests in Melbourne any day now.

Escort plays need to be sorted out one way or the other. My preference would be to penalise any defensive player that get in the way of a kick contest that isn’t going for the ball. If you don’t want to do that then go the other way and allow defensive players to shepherd players out of the contest however they want. Just remove the stupid lottery nature that currently exists.

Statement on the first joint RLPA Player Advisory Group forum
On Tuesday night the first joint meeting of the Men’s and Women’s Player Advisory Groups (PAG) convened to discuss issues of critical importance to player welfare and conditions.
The coming together of the two advisory bodies, whose members are drawn from the NRL and NRLW competitions, demonstrates the strength of their shared objectives and feelings on several key matters that are impacting the playing group, as well as clear alignment on a desire to increase transparency, accountability, and action from the governing body.
Now more than ever it is vital that the players’ voice is not only heard but respected. These advisory bodies will continue to form part of the decision-making and advocacy efforts of the representative Rugby League Players’ Association.
Disappointingly this meeting comes against backdrop of repeated failures to agree on key matters with those most impacted. There is a united position among the player groups, that the NRL administration work with the RLPA on behalf of the players to ensure there is a genuine commitment regarding the players’ collective involvement in future decisions.
The PAG forum identified the following key issues impacting players and is calling on the NRL to act swiftly on:
The development and implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement for female players, as Rugby League remains the only major sport in Australia without a women’s CBA in place.
Contract security for the NRLW, which remains a pivotal element of the expanded 2022 season, achieved through the NRL working with the RLPA to develop a system that is fair and provides a structure that meets the needs of all the female players whilst benefiting the game. The players have persevered through structures that were developed and implemented without proper engagement from the start and were the ones who suffered as a result.
Immediately addressing the process for implementing and communicating rule changes. The process for rule changes throughout the 2021 season is of significant concern for the playing group. These decisions were made without the RLPA directly involved, which deprived the process of the collective feedback from those with intimate on-field knowledge and those most impacted by the changes. It is vital that the RLPA is directly involved in any review of the 2021 season, allowing the views of those who actively participated to be heard. It is expected that the RLPA’s involvement in both rule review and implementation be a prerequisite moving forward.
Abandoning its current and disproportionate proposal to increase player fines, which is misguided and significantly inconsistent with other Australian and New Zealand sporting codes. The RLPA submitted a proposal to the NRL several months ago, outlining an improved alternative integrity framework and it’s vital the NRL engages with them to deliver the game a more fair, transparent, and consistent system.
The PAGs also called on the NRL and Commission to increase engagement with the playing body via the RLPA and to do so in good faith.
Furthermore the PAGs reinforced that the RLPA is established by the players as their trusted and appointed representative body and represents all players in engagement with the NRL administration. It is the unanimous view of the PAGs that when the RLPA is party to the decision-making process, the game benefits.
Both Player Advisory Groups will continue to meet regularly to discuss initiatives that benefit the collective playing group and, together with the RLPA, will develop its views to improve the welfare and livelihoods of the players and advance the interests of the game we all love.

Re: Josh Hodgson part of push for players to be heard on rule changes
I have to say the dislike for Hodgson on this site at times is weird.
He's not the player in 2021 that he was at his peak but it's like a large portion of the fan base forget what life was like before Josh Hodgson arrived. He's been, IMO, THE main factor in our recent successes and he's treated like he's some regular Sean Rutgertson.
God help us if we have to wait as long for the next Josh Hodgson as we had to wait for this one. But then, given how little respect he's getting, maybe the fanbase deserves that.
And before the strawmans come, im not saying signing him up for 5 years, or give him a job with the club, or that he's still wonderful and not flawed. IM not saying any of that. Im just saying without him, our last 7 years would have been CONSIDERABLY darker and far less successful. He's second only to Steve Walters for our best hooker, and at his peak was one of the best players in the world. Feels like some fans have forgotten that.

Hodgson has been Ricky's most successful recruit ever. And that's taking into account his signings at the Roosters, Cronulla, Parra (sigh) and his 8 years with us. He's been our most influential player since he joined us.Botman wrote: ↑September 22, 2021, 9:00 pm I have to say the dislike for Hodgson on this site at times is weird.

Just deviating slightly from this direct topic. Why the **** do the rules need to be changed every year? I'm a broken record on this topic but every stakeholder in the game acknowledges there is a big problem with the standard of refereeing but each year the coaches/games committee introduces a bunch of new rules which only make it more difficult for the referees.
It doesn't make sense.

The EPL doesn't change rules much from year to year. So far as I know neither does MLB or NBA. I'm not sure where they are getting their data that fans want this or it is succesful in growing a sport.

Re: Josh Hodgson part of push for players to be heard on rule changes
I've been saying it for the past ... well since the third Origin. The game today doesn't at all resemble the first 15 rounds of the competition. It's a farce. Change the rules on the fly at the start of last year and then double down with the rule changes this year. And then post origin go back to 2019 football.
Ridiculous.
FTR I supported the speeding up of the game but watching some of these finals games do we really need a faster game? Probably not.

I think one thing to be wary of if you revert to refereeing for grind teams will revert their play and team make-up.
You can’t look at last night and say “well that style of football was still good with adjusted enforcement”, because it was between two teams who have built their team and structured their style this year on Vlandysball.

Re: Josh Hodgson part of push for players to be heard on rule changes
I was more thinking about all the finals games and the last month of the regular season. I mean, teams are fatigued but still able to defend their errors. Earlier in the year teams were expected to defend 20 tackles in a row in some instances and it's virtually impossible.
The major disappointment for me remains that penalty crackdown from a few years ago. It was starting to change the game. Teams were starting to phase those negative tactics out and then the NRL backflipped.
