Ugh..

Canberra Raiders winger Jordan Rapana sentenced for drink driving

Canberra Raiders star Jordan Rapana is expecting punishment from the NRL after he pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday to driving over the general alcohol limit after he was caught drink driving along Bradman Avenue, Maroochydore on September 27.

Rapana was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for three months. He admitted to police he had been drinking before he got behind the wheel and blew a reading of 0.098.

These guys earn in excess of 250k a year and cant call an uber?

Super disappointing especially from a leader of the team like Rapa who's got such a good reputation.

I'm reminded of that Simpsons clip where Homer tries to protect his family against a pack of zombies by offering to sacrifice himself. At which point they yell out BRAINS! And push him aside.

''Rapana and his legal team were also said to argue that a conviction could see him blocked from a mooted move overseas and that the loss of his license would be too much of a burden for his pregnant wife''.

Sorry champ you knew it was wrong to drink and drive, take it on the chin

Love it how he stated it will affect a move overseas and put a burden on his wife LMFAO

What an absolute circus every Raiders off-season is every year. Can we go one season without 3 players getting arrested for alcohol related (alleged) crimes?

Running over someone's pregnant wife would also be somewhat inconvenient for that family.

Love Rapa, but as already mentioned, catch a frikkin uber or call a mate!

How would you feel Jordy, if a drunk driver smashed into a car with your pregnant wife in it?

God forbid it never happens...just saying'

The story suggests he has no history of drink driving.

100% correct that us fans need to hold the Raiders players accountable for their continued drink driving issues.

One of the issues is that the level of media focus on player indiscretions tends to match the level of media focus on the player or club.

A Bronco’s star minor recklessness gets a lot more attention than a Knights second stringer.

Channel 9 focus their stories on the players appearing on Thursday and Friday night games. The big clubs have to accept the positives of regular free to air coverage and positive player profiles with the negatives when their players stuff up.

Canberra Raiders star Jordan Rapana's fate rests with the NRL integrity unit

Jordan Rapana's fate for the 2022 season opener rests in the hands of the NRL integrity unit after the Canberra Raiders winger was sentenced for drink driving in Queensland. The Raiders star pleaded guilty but avoided a conviction, instead copping a three-month suspension from driving and a $500 fine.

So how are the last 3 seasons looking for charges?

Wighton x 1
Scott x 2
Hors x 1
CHN x 1
Starling x 2
Rapana x 1

Im all for holding the club and players accountable for it's current culture, which appears to be sub optimal to say the least...

here's my problem... functionally, how do we fans do that? I know we can come on sites like this or flood social media or write letters to the club threatening cancelling our membership... but i dont really think any of that works

What avenues to do the fans have to really apply the blow torch to the Canberra Raiders for anything?

Incredibly disappointing to say the least.

I really loathe drink driving. Risking other people’s lives due to selfishness or laziness.

Really sick of this crap from the team. Not surprising they make **** decisions on the field when these are their decisions off the field.

They can’t. As discussed a very long time ago, the accountability mechanisms at the Raiders are not adequate.

Yeah it’s pretty poor Gangers. In the end the club is always bigger than those in it at any point of time, but the current players and management are making it tough. A reset, refresh and reboot is required.

Indeed. So i'd kindly ask media types to stop asking the fans to do something that the very systems of this club deny them the ability to do.

Where was the Plan B Rapa?? Your pocket will be lighter, but worse is the likelihood you won't be available to start season 2022 for the Raiders. What on Earth was the occasion that you put your place in the team at risk? Disappointing.

If we get drawn to play Melbourne in Melbourne round 1 we are one or two incidents away from not being able to field a 17 when you factor in the anti vax faction. CHN possibly suspended as well?

I really hope the NRL start fining players 1/26th of their salary for each week they miss due to self caused suspensions.

That will soon start some self reflection on their behaviour.

Yeah thats a good shout

Other leagues i follow do that... if you're suspended for on or off field matters, you lose the pro-rated salary for that game.
I dont really think i like that it happens for on field issues, especially in a game like RL where on field suspensions are far more common

but if you're suspended for conduct/behavioural issues... if we're serious about cleaning up the game... why shouldnt the players forfiet that salary?
Raps on even 300k (and he's on more) might think a little more getting behind the wheel if he thinks a 2-3 game suspension is going to cost him 20k+ of lost wages. If they really want, they can do what the NFL does, and donate the fine money to a good cause... so it's not even padding the bottom line, you hold players accountable and provide financial incentive to do the right thing, but if they dont, at least the money goes back into the community in some sense.

So I’ve got a theory. Comparative to other sports I don’t think the NRL has a huge supporter base, but I would say the supporters it does have are extremely rusted on.

All sports have a proportion of rusted on fans that will stick by a team or a code come hell or high water but most sports also have a range of ‘discretionary’ supporters.

Those discretionary supporters will find something else to partake in if the rules of Rugby Union become too complex and the game too slow, or if AFL doesn’t jump the right way on a social issue. NRL in the main is not like that. It has a forgiving fan base that over the years have become accustomed to controversy and has almost come to accept that some behaviour just goes with the territory of the sport. It also breeds complacency and a total lack of consequence.

We can moan, groan, vent our spleens on supporter sites but when it’s all said and done we forgive. Forgive the players, the clubs and the code. Buy the merchandise, purchase the tickets and cheer on the players.

Some here have speculated that there is a culture problem at the raiders. I don’t disagree, but I do wonder if all of us are in some part enablers of the cultures and the behaviours.

I'd be curious to know how this stacks up against your average group of about 30 20-35 year olds in terms of being charged with criminal/traffic offences. Not too well I suspect.
