Brutal Blues axing tipped for Jack Wighton as Brad Fittler mulls centre dilemma

Jack Wighton looks set to be dropped from the New South Wales team for the first time since making his debut three years ago. Wighton played 10 straight State of Origin games for his state before COVID-19 ruled him out of the trip to Perth last week.

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart reveals how Jack Wighton should fit into NSW Blues for State of Origin

Move Matt Burton to right centre. That's how NSW Hall of Famer Ricky Stuart would not only fit Jack Wighton into the NSW Blues side for the State of Origin decider - but make the team better in the process.

"I think they can move Burton across to the other side, pull Jack into the left-hand side there," Stuart said. "I don't think that's a tough decision at all. I think that makes the team stronger to be quite honest."

Josh Papalii must fire in Raiders versus Dragons game to save Maroons jersey

At Wollongong on Sunday, Josh Papalii is fighting to save his State of Origin career. In Origin I and II, the man with an engine that lasted almost an hour in last year’s series, was replaced after 21 and 26-minutes respectively. The Maroons saw Papalii’s body language, down on his haunches and sucking in air after the Blues attack had come in waves. Papalii is likely to end up on the bench in Origin III.

There’s something wrong with Papa the past month or so. They say there’s no injury but I’m not so sure. He only made 83 metres from 11 runs today in 40 minutes. Both his past two club games he’s not been near his best.

Josh Papalii named for Origin III

Queensland coach Billy Slater has made just one change to the side that was defeated by the Blues in game two of the 2022 State of Origin series, with Cowboys forward Tom Gilbert called into the squad as a replacement for Felise Kaufusi.

Slater will turn to Cowboys young gun Jeremiah Nanai in the back row, with Gilbert set to join Harry Grant, Jai Arrow and Patrick Carrigan on the bench.

Jack Wighton snubbed as Freddy rolls the dice after huge Haas blow

Jack Wighton has missed out on the 17 with New South Wales coach Brad Fittler naming his side for the Origin decider on Monday.

Jordan McLeane will make his Origin debut at starting prop with star forward Payne Haas ruled out through injury.

Fittler has stuck with the same centre pairing — Matt Burton and Stephen Crichton — that got the job done in game two, while he’s also gone with the one-two punch combination at hooker with Api Koroisau named to star and Damien Cook on the bench.

Fair to say S. Crichton has retained his spot based on the club jersey he wears rather than performances. He was terrible off the bench in game 1 and almost invisible in game 2 despite being part of the dominant team.

He's a Neanderthal. Very physical and instinctive and that's why we love him. But when you step back and analyse his game reading ability, it ranks very low.

Not sure about that. Think he needs more time on the treadmill. I can't remember him looking so heavy and sluggish as he does right now.

Jack is unlucky but I’m not shocked he missed out despite Botman confidently declaring he walks into the team for game 3 when I asked the question at the end of game 2.

He should have walked back in. Blues best player by a fair margin in Game 1. Only missed Game 2 because of COVID protocols. If he played he would have feasted on the opportunity like everyone else did. Somehow Crichton retains his spot despite being a total passenger for both games.

NSW not picking their best team is a tradition as old as SOO itself
NSW have played 4 centres in this series so far - Wighton, Crighton, Staggs and Burton... Staggs was flat out terrible and got hooked, Crichton hasn't done a lot bad but certainly hasnt stood out... Wighton was the blues MOTM in game 1 and Burton was right up there for discussions for MOTM in game 2.

His stinker of a game yesterday probably didnt help either. But there was a simple answer here, but NSW routinely miss the easy answers.

This, and the whole he isn't used to playing on the right side of the field etc, otherwise I suspect he would have been brought in for Crichton.

He was woeful yesterday, so in such a tight decision I wouldn't be surprised if it swayed Fittler.

Fittler's "tough" call to overlook Wighton for Origin decider

Jack Wighton was one of the heroes for the NSW Blues in Game One of the State of Origin series which is why it was "tough" for coach Brad Fittler to leave him out of the team for the decider.

That was a tough one,” Fittler said. “I think Sifa, the versatility he gives us on the bench was most probably the reason we went with Sifa over Jack. If he’s our 18th player that means there are 17 blokes who are playing pretty good to be in front of him.”

Jack was never moving Burton from left centre. To'o was on the right game 1, and in game 2 moved back to the left which recreated the Panthers (Luai, Burton, To'o) left edge from 2021. I think they also moved Liam Martin to the left so it was all Panthers.

And Jack was never playing right centre.

But he should have been picked in Talakai's spot imo. Jack was brilliant in game 1 and could have played left edge if needed quite easily. That is his next logical step, probably only a year or two away I reckon.

I agree. Just on the selection of Jack v Talakai for bench, I agree Jack provide far more utility and versatility and is the safe bet, but if you are purely seeing that role as 10-15 mins the end to make something happen I can see how Talakai might have more X factor.
