Harry Rushton to depart Canberra Raiders immediately, heading back to England for personal reasons
Young Canberra Raiders forward Harry Rushton set to head home to England immediately for personal reasons. Rushton's imminent departure is a shame given the 21-year-old looked at home in his three NRL games this season.

Canberra Raiders club statement
The Canberra Raiders have released Harry Rushton (Raider #382) from the remainder of his contract to return home to England effective immediately.
Rushton, who has been out with a broken jaw since the Raiders NSW Cup match on July 9, has been granted a release from the remainder of this season and the final year of his deal in 2023.
He made his NRL debut earlier this season against the Panthers when he came from the bench in the round seven match at BlueBet Stadium.
Raiders CEO Don Furner said the Raiders thanked Harry for his time at the club and wished him all the best for the future.
“Harry joined us from Wigan at the beginning of 2021 as a young player looking for an opportunity and leaves us a player who has had the opportunity to make an NRL debut this season,” Furner said. “Harry will return home to England to be closer to his family and take up an opportunity closer to home. We wish Harry all the best for the future.”

Well ****. Was really looking forward to seeing him get more first grade next year. He's got a lot of skills when he's given free reign.

Well that blows. Better than him heading to an NRL competitor though. Mooney, you’re up.

I really doubt that was what happened in this case. He'd done all the hard yards to set up for a good 2023.

And that's the end of the England experiment... well, at least we still have Whitehead?

Man that sucks, he was one of my favourite up and coming players.
I can not see the article but assume that it is a permanent move back to the UK?

Compassionate leave for the rest of the year and a return for 2023? Doesn’t mention any release from contract.

That's a real shame. He was obviously in the running for an extended stint with the move of Elliott and the (inevitable) reduced role of Whitehead.
The circumstances are pretty vague, so can't read too much into what has been made publicly available.

A real shame. Had a lot of time for him and I think he was going to start pressing pretty hard for regular fg time next season
Hope all is well back home for him and wish him all the best.

I knew this would happen from the moment we signed him, you can't expect a kid to move across the world where he knows no one and not get homesick and want to go home. It wasn't the smartest recruitment strategy

So Elliott, Sutton and Rushton now gone for 2023.
Plus with Whitehead in plodersville we need some backrow reinforcements big time.
Can't go into next year with what we currently have.

Where do you get this inevitable idea from? Whitehead is durable, the club will continue to bury their heads in the sand for a while yet.Seiffert82 wrote: ↑August 12, 2022, 6:03 pm That's a real shame. Going to a Yorkshire club (Huddersfield) not Wigan.

Huddersfield Giants statement
Huddersfield Giants have added to their impressive cohort of young, English starlets with the signing of 20-year-old English utility forward Harry Rushton on a three year deal beginning in the 2023 season.
A 190cm, 100kg powerful forward, Rushton came through Wigan Warriors Academy, making his Super League debut in Round 14 game for the Warriors against St Helens. He signed for Canberra Raiders in 2021, going on to make his debut in Round 7 of the NRL before making two further appearances in the competition for the Raiders.
Huddersfield Giants head coach, Ian Watson said: "Outstanding signing for the Giants. He's a good, young, English forward who has plenty of ball-playing ability. He's got the ability to carry the ball, defends well and he's been well-schooled. He's made his NRL debut this year as well, furthering his experience and playing consistently in the NSW State Cup, he's continually been one of the better players at that level. I'm absolutely made up, it's a great signing for Huddersfield."

Maybe there are extenuating circumstances none of us will ever know about.
But you do wonder whether things may have been different if we didn’t have the worst second rower in the comp with a mortgage on Rushton’s position, and the captaincy to boot.

Re: Harry Rushton to head home to England immediately for personal reasons
I doubt that was a major factor
If it was, wouldn’t he be moving to another NRL club?
Certainly I think he’d have interest around the league
Also he sort of established himself more as a middle forward

He's played about 53 minutes the last couple of games. I fully expect the trend to continue.
Stuart loves his veterans but he's not a complete idiot. Next step is to hand over the captaincy.

That's 53 minutes each game. It took Stick 19 rounds and an injury to start bringing him down from 80 minutes, let's not confuse him with Einstein quite yet.Seiffert82 wrote: ↑August 12, 2022, 9:25 pmWatching the games.Roger Kenworthy wrote:Where do you get this inevitable idea from? Re: Harry Rushton to head home to England immediately for personal reasons
Murchie looks like a proper first grader now. Dropped some size and improved his fitness. I'd be ok with him coming back to play the right side starting second rower role. I doubt that's ever going to happen though. He wouldn't come here to fight for minutes with CHN, Horsburgh and Mooney after being let go the first time.Roy Rover wrote: ↑August 12, 2022, 9:28 pmYeah I just thought the same thing.kiwi raider wrote: ↑August 12, 2022, 8:26 pm We were rumored to be chasing Murchie so with this and katoa turning us down you'd think he'd be a big chance of returning
