Canberra Raiders Cup: How wingers are taking their skills to a whole new level

Bushrangers winger Jack Davison is Tuggeranong’s leading try scorer (11) and finds himself inside the top five in the league.

"In juniors, playing on the wing meant you're not getting much ball but now in seniors and with how the game is played you're coming in off the wing, getting involved, taking hit ups. It's great," Davison said. "There have been situations where you have to be acrobatic and get in a position I wouldn't normally be in to get it down.

"The footy gods were on our side": West Belconnen Warriors steal minor premiership

His poor kicking performance last week made it anyone's minor premiership but Bobby Roberts has changed the narrative, stealing the top spot off Woden Valley heading into the finals. The veteran answered back in style on Saturday, leading his team to the Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiership.

"The footy gods were on our side, I guess, because we needed results to go our way and they did," Roberts said.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Week 1 Finals Preview

Image

The finals of the Canberra Raiders Cup are here. The West Belconnen Warriors took the minor premiership after they defeated the Queanbeyan Blues, 26-10, at Seiffert Oval last Saturday. Meanwhile, an unexpected, 42-32 loss to the Bulls at Gungahlin cost the Tuggeranong Bushrangers a first placed finish and a second bite at the cherry in the finals. The Bushrangers will now face the fourth placed Blues in Saturday's elimination final at Greenway. The Warriors will meet the Woden Valley Rams in the major semifinal at Kippax on Sunday.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Queanbeyan Blues

This is a battle between the best defensive and best attacking team of 2022.

Up until last week, the Bushrangers had conceded an average of just 17 points per game. That's now blown out a bit, after letting in seven tries against the Bulls last weekend. But their attacking record shouldn't be dismissed either. They are second only to the Blues for most points scored in 2022. The Bushrangers have shown some recent good form - having beaten the Rams (30-16), Warriors (26-12) and Bulldogs (62-10). It is why the loss last weekend to the Bulls was such a surprise.

The Blues had three competition points deducted from them by the CRRL two weeks ago, after Queanbeyan breached the salary cap. It has proved costly for the Blues. They won one more match than the Bushrangers this season - and as many as the Warriors and Rams. They would have finished in second on points differential but for the cap penalty. But we also have to remember the Blues had an unfair advantage through the year - and they only have themselves to blame for the points deduction.

The Blues were flying in the middle of the season. They put on 60 points or more twice and 40 or more in four other games. But they have hit some bumps on the road more recently. They have suffered recent losses to the Kangaroos (36-22) and Sharks (44-34) - and their only recent wins have been against teams outside the top four (the Bulldogs and Magpies).

This is a tough match to tip. The return of Terry Campese is a boost - and it will possibly be his last ever match. That means there’ll be plenty of emotion in the game for the Blues. In addition, hooker Josh Mitchell is flying in from Queensland for the game, after recently moving for work. But based on the recent form lines, I'm going to go with the Bushrangers at home.

Season record: Bushrangers 10 and 5, 1 draw (3rd, +169)
Blues 11 and 5 (4th, +186)
Form: Bushrangers WWWWL
Blues LLWWL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 30, Blues 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 19, Blues 23 points conceded per match
Recent meetings: 2022 Round 11 Blues 36 defeated Bushrangers 10 at Greenway
2022 Round 2 Blues 32 defeated Bushrangers 20 at Seiffert Oval

West Belconnen Warriors v Woden Valley Rams

First versus second. The Warriors and Rams have been the quiet achievers of the 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup. They haven't been racking up the big scores or big margins. But they've done what it takes to post win after win. The Warriors lost just four matches all season, the Rams five.

The Warriors have been revitalised by the return of some old, familiar faces, Bobby Roberts and Ryan McQueen. Together with five eighth Bayley Graham, they’ve been responsible for steering the team around the park. McQueen also took the reins as co-coach, alongside Tim Sloman. It's been a successful formula.

Roberts thought he'd cost his team the minor premiership in Round 17, when the Warriors lost to the Kangaroos, 22-20. The Warriors scored five tries to four, but Roberts failed to slot a single goal. Against the Blues last weekend he scored a try and kicked five goals in the Warriors' 26-10 win. With the Bushrangers losing at Gungahlin, it was a victory that delivered the minor premiership.

"The footy gods were on our side, I guess, because we needed results to go our way and they did," Roberts told The Canberra Times after the game. "I knew there was a lot on the line last week so I took it pretty hard after my performance but it's unreal to have won today."

The Rams come into this match off a final round bye. They could have secured the minor premiership in Round 17, but they were denied by the Bulls, losing 28-12 at Gungahlin. A second placed finish has still been a great achievement for new coach Billy Thomson and his men - after the Rams won just two games last season and finished with the wooden spoon.

The Rams have a slightly better recent form line than the Warriors. Apart from the loss to the Bulls, the Rams have had one other recent loss - to the Bushrangers (30-16) in Round 13. The Warriors have not only lost recently to the Kangaroos - but also to the Bushrangers (26-12) and Rams (22-12).

This is will be a close contest. But the Rams look like they have some disruptions, so I’ll tip the Warriors to be the first team through to the Grand Final.

Season record: Warriors 11 and 4, 1 draw (1st, +89)
Rams 11 and 5 (2nd, +46)
Form: Warriors LLWLW
Rams LWWWL
Attacking record: Warriors 26, Rams 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 20, Rams 21 points conceded per match
Recent meetings: 2022 Round 14 Rams 22 defeated Warriors 12 at Kippax
2022 Round 5 Warriors 36 defeated Rams 20 at Phillip Oval

'This is it': Canberra Raiders great Terry Campese calls time on playing days for Queanbeyan Blues

Terry Campese, 38, is set to run out for his swan song with the Queanbeyan Blues for their elimination semi-final against the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. A quad strain has kept Campese off the field in recent weeks, and it will likely keep him from playing a part on the field in the Blues' finals campaign after the weekend.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Terry Campese leads Queanbeyan Blues to memorable victory ahead of retirement

If this is it, Terry Campese couldn't have come up with a better way to say farewell. The Queanbeyan Blues captain-coach was instrumental in his side's minor semi-final victory over Tuggeranong on Saturday afternoon.

"He's a marvel," Bushrangers coach Jason Kelly said. "He was playing on one leg and copping a lot of abuse from the crowd but the bloke just keeps doing it.

West Belconnen Warriors book Canberra Raiders Cup grand final ticket with 36-point thrashing over Woden Valley Rams

West Belconnen Warriors fans knew at half-time that their team, leading 40-0, had secured their grand final ticket. They ended up with a 36-point win over the Woden Valley Rams during Sunday's major semi-final.

The Warriors will have a week off before the grand final in two weeks, but the Rams are set to take on the Queanbeyan Blues in the Preliminary Final on Saturday. Despite having a quad injury, Blues player coach Terry Campese expects to be able to play.

West Belconnen Warriors 46 (Withers 3, Shaw 2, Bethke 1, McQueen 1, Graham 1 tries, Roberts 7 goals) defeated Woden Valley Rams 10 (Swanson 1, Cannon 1 tries, McDonald 1 goal)

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Week 2 Finals Preview

Image

Three teams are still standing in the 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup. The West Belconnen Warriors are the first team to qualify for the Grand Final, after winning in the major semi final against the Woden Valley Rams last Sunday. And now the Rams meet the Queanbeyan Blues in this weekend's Preliminary Final at Gungahlin Enclosed. The winner will meet the Warriors in the premiership decider.

Woden Valley Rams v Queanbeyan Blues

The Rams suffered a big, 46-10, defeat at the hands of the Warriors in week one of the finals at Kippax. It was all over at half time, with the home team having scored seven tries and leading 40-0. Rams hooker Kosta Posantzis was sent to the sin bin in the seventh minute, and that marked the start of the procession to the try line for the Warriors. In the second half, the contest was more even, with Rams benchies Harrison Cannon and Scott Swanson crossing. But they were never going to come back from 40 points down. Warriors winger Brandon Withers got a hat trick, while bench forward Mitchell Shaw got a double under the posts.

"They really jumped us hard in the first half and our reaction was poor. We fell off a lot of tackles and just couldn't get back into the grind of the game," Rams coach Billy Thomson told The Canberra Times.

"I thought we had a better intention coming out in the second half. So hopefully we can take something from that into next week."

It was a real battle between the Queanbeyan Blues and Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the first half of the minor semi final at Greenway last Saturday. The Blues struck early, with lock Bradley Buckley and fullback Matt Parsons crossing inside the opening 10 minutes. But Tuggeranong captain Zac Saddler answered that challenge, scoring a double in the space of three minutes. The second rower was just too big and too strong, running out wide. A try to winger George Morseu in the 26th minute gave the Blues a 14-8 lead. The Bushrangers levelled just before half time, after centre Brigham Moeakiola took a cross field kick to the try line and crashed over.

But it was all the Blues in the second half. Morseu was in again just two minutes after the break, while a try to Ropata Doherty in the corner in the 50th minute delivered a 10 point lead for the visitors. A four pointer for five eighth Terry Campese in the 55th minute showed why the veteran won the 2022 McIntyre Medal - the best in the league at age 38. A Josh Mitchell penalty goal two minutes from full time sealed a 32-14 victory for Queanbeyan.

Blues captain-coach Terry Campese played despite a quad injury. Heading into the clash, he had feared he might have been playing his last game, irrespective of the result. He's planning to hang up the boots at the end of the season. But Campese says that he will suit up again in the Preliminary Final this Sunday.

The Blues finished in fourth place on the ladder after having three competition points deducted by the CRRL for breaching the salary cap. They produced as many wins as the Rams in the regular season - and ended as the No. 1 attacking team in the competition. But they had some stumbles towards the end of the regular season. They dropped games against the Kangaroos (36-22), Sharks (44-34) and Warriors (26-10) on the run to the finals. But there is no doubt that they looked good with Campese at the helm against the Bushrangers.

The Rams have produced a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes this season. They won just two games in 2021, winning the wooden spoon. This year, new coach Billy Thomson almost took them to the minor premiership - and he was rewarded with the Coach of the Year on McIntyre Medal night. However Thomson will be worried about his team's recent form - having lost to the Bulls (28-12) in their last match of the regular season, before last weekend's big defeat.

This should be a great contest. But based on the numbers and recent form lines, I think it will be the Blues who are heading to the Grand Final.

Season record: Rams 11 and 5 (2nd, +10)
Blues 12 and 5 (4th, +204)
Form: Rams WWWLL
Blues LWWLW
Attacking record: Rams 23, Blues 34 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 23, Blues 22 points conceded per match

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Grand Final Preview

Image

The decider. The West Belconnen Warriors face the Queanbeyan Blues at Seiffert Oval in the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final on Sunday.

The Blues qualified for the Grand Final last Sunday, with a 36-22 victory over the Woden Valley Rams at Gungahlin. The Blues again started fast. A long, looping pass from five eighth Terry Campese put Jake Butler-Fleming over out wide inside the first two minutes. Four minutes later, Blues centre Tristan Eldridge made a break down the touchline, with fullback Mathew Parsons backing up inside for the four pointer. 10-0 to the Blues before the 10 minute mark. In the 32nd minute, big runs up the middle from John Papalii and Atunaisa Tupou produced another try for Parsons, this time under the posts. And then just before half time, quick hands to the right saw Blues winger Bryce Lee go over in the corner. The Queanbeyan outfit went to the break with a 22-0 lead.

The Rams lifted themselves off the canvas two minutes into the second half, with halfback Jesse Taws setting up centre Scott Swanson for try. Then in the next set, they were in again, with Sean Maloney throwing a dummy before passing to a charging Joel Ambrose. That reduced the gap to 10 points. But tries to winger George Morseu and Butler-Fleming saw the Blues skip away again - and they led 34-12 at the 60th minute. The Rams were not finished. Taws set up Jackson McDonald for a try out wide, while Dan Prior bulldozed through the line in the 70th minute. But it would not be enough. A Campese penalty goal five minutes from time sealed a 14 point win for Queanbeyan.

Blues captain-coach - and 2022 McIntyre Medalist - Terry Campese is set to hang up the boots at the end of this season. The result gives him the chance of finishing his playing career, aged 38, with another premiership.

"It's every boy's dream, really," Campese told The Canberra Times after the match.

"From a young age your first goal is to make the big time and I was lucky enough to achieve that in the NRL. But to finish off your playing career on a good note for your junior club, to go out on a high winning a grand final, that would be special."

The minor premiers, the West Belconnen Warriors, will be standing in the way. They will be dreaming of their own special finish to the season. The return of Ryan McQueen - as a player-coach - and half Bobby Roberts this year has given the Warriors a huge boost. They will be fresh, having qualified first for the Grand Final and having the benefit of a week off.

The Blues finished the season as the No. 1 attacking team. They might have also finished second on the ladder but for the loss of three competition points - a penalty for breaching the salary cap. Given the CRRL was reportedly considering a penalty of six competition points, they can perhaps now consider themselves fortunate.

The Warriors ranked fourth in attack at the end of the regular season, but they almost always did enough to win. They have lost just four games this year - and their defence is one important reason why. Only the Bushrangers had a better defensive record this year. The Blues ranked fourth in defence this year.

While the Warriors lost to the Blues at Kippax back in June, they beat them at Seiffert just a few weeks ago. But that Blues team was missing Campese, due to a quad injury. Campese has been playing with injury the last couple of weeks, but he says he should be close to fully fit by Sunday.

This shapes as a classic Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final. The teams are evenly matched and either side can get the win. The Blues are probably slight favourites, with Campese back at the helm. If you can get to the ground, make sure you do. It will be the last time we see "Campo" take to the field - and it should be a cracking match. But if you cannot get there, be watching the free live stream on Bar TV Sports.

May the best team win.

West Belconnen Warriors lean on grand final winners for Queanbeyan Blues showdown

It's been six years since the West Belconnen Warriors last tasted success and getting just two shots at glory in 13 years. They have five remaining players from the side that beat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in 2016, as well as Tim Sloman who has moved into the coaching role: Ryley Thomas, Bobby Roberts, Mitchell Shaw, Harrison Whatman and captain Ryan McQueen.

Last game ever for Campo

Today, Terry Campese plays his last rugby league game, ever. The 38-year-old has battled through a quad strain in recent weeks to keep the fairytale ending to his career alive. It all comes to a head on Sunday in the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final against the West Belconnen Warriors.

"That's about all I've got left. Eighty minutes is all the body needs to get through. The boots will stay out on the field as well," he said.

The Yass Magpies have finished the season undefeated and as the Katrina Fanning Shield premiers for 2022, claiming a 36-12 win over the Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert Oval. It was a dominant first half from the Magpies which proved too much for the Rams to overcome, completing a perfect season with another big victory.

Yass centre, Tijana Zdravevska was awarded player of the match after proving to be lethal in the centres with some big defence and amazing attack.
