Even if we do sign him and he gets an immediate release. There is now way we're giving the keys to a teenage half who's never played 1st grade or trained with the team.

I don’t think we have a choice. We have almost no kicking game without Fog. Weekes is a very similar player to Strange.

I think we’ll see Cook come into the 7 jersey next week - I don’t think Stuart will want to heap the organising duties onto Strange’s shoulders after giving him such a basic game plan to start the season.

We mightn’t have a choice but the Eels might want to keep him for this moment.

Sanders could agitate for a release as he might see an opportunity to play first grade this year. But its all in Parras court.

IBG wrote: April 20, 2024, 9:00 pm Well, given Fog is out for at least a couple of months, it's time to get Sanders for this year.

Not expecting him to be the saviour, but this is the year to give him, Strange and Stewart experience. We are realistically not going to go anywhere this year, so better to suffer the growing pains this year.

Give the Eels Guler, Cotric and a slab of VB to get it done.
The slab of VB could be the most appealing part of our offer.

I see what you're saying but Kaeo is next cab off the rank. He has been 18th man for a number of games and he and Strange did ok as a combination throughout the trials.

If we can’t get Samders this year, we should make a play for Jake Clifford - he’s running around with the Northern Pride

We could offer a player to Parra to get Sanders.
Schiller is going next year so do we send him to Parra for the rest if the year to get Sanders now.
Get him into NSW cup and in a few weeks we could debut him

This article suggests Sanders is signed.

Kaeo Weekes will cover for the injured Jamal Fogarty as the Raiders deal with injury crisis

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart is posed to parachute former Manly speedster Kaeo Weekes into his depleted side for Sunday’s big game against Cronulla at Canberra Stadium. Weekes’ expected elevation comes as the Raiders confirmed regular halfback Jamal Fogarty would be sidelined for up to 12 games with a ruptured bicep.

Canberra has no intention of trying to expedite the recruitment of Parramatta’s Ethan Sanders – a player signed from 2025 – for this year.

Agreed
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

It’s would be good to have him in our system this year, playing with some of the guys who bounce between Cup and NRL.

Would also be handy to have him should one of Strange or Weeks get injured or suspended.

Would also be good to give him a taste of NRL prior to the offseason so he knows what he is up against.

The article says he is signed for 2025, but I'm not sure that the article is correct. Otherwise... the journalist would surely have made more of that information. In addition, the 10 day notification period could not yet be over... and I doubt the Eels are going to have waived their rights just yet.

If the article is correct
He is signed and we are waiting for the 10 day period to lapse before its official.

If that's the case I don't see why we wouldn't push for the immediate release. Parra would probably want something in return .

But that’s not how it works. The player has to advise the current club he has an offer from another he intends to accept and give the current club 10 days to make a counter offer. Only after the 10 days have passed, or the current club has waived their rights to a counter offer in writing, can the player make a decision to accept a deal (one or the other, or neither).

10 days is Thursday this week at the earliest.

He may have decided in his head he’s accepting the Raiders’ offer. So say he actually does that Thursday, the contract then needs to be finalised and registered and then that’s only for 2025 and beyond. So if he wants to come this year, then he needs to go to the Eels… maybe even Thursday, and formally ask for an immediate release. So then that’s another negotiation with the Eels. So doubtful all that could be done by Sunday.

And then there’s no way Ricky Stuart would not follow up on the promises he’s given to Kaeo first. Which would be to give him a shot at firsts. And Ethan Sanders couldn’t even be listed in the NRL squad of 22 on Tuesday.

Ethan Sanders, if he got here by Sunday, could line up in NSW Cup. But that’s not happening… is my guess.

And if a release is requested, that could potentially delay an announcement as if all parties are engaged in negotiating that early release it would make sense to announce the signing and immediate departure/arrival at the same time

So we might be in for a few weeks for official announcements.
