2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 3 Preview

Image

Round 3 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by Sunday's clash between the Woden Rams and Goulburn Bulldogs at Phillip Oval. The match will be live streamed for free, by Bar TV Sports.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v West Belconnen Warriors

The 2023 Grand Finalists, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, have lost a bit of talent - and have been hit by the loss of captain Darby Medlyn to long term injury. That told in the Bushies' first match of 2024. They fell to the Woden Rams in the battle of the south, losing 30-6 at Greenway. The Rams scored three tries in the first half, with fullback Daine Spencer bagging a double in the space of three minutes. The home team went to the break without scoring, trailing 18-0.

Bushrangers lock Brad Buckley was the first to cross in the second half, the result of a simple crash ball on the try line. But that was as good as it got for Tuggeranong. Tries to centre Gideon Afemui in the 50th minute, and winger Thomas Scrivener just before full time, wrapped up a good first up win for the Rams.

This Saturday's contest will be the first of the season for the West Belconnen Warriors. Round 1 was, of course, washed out, while the Warriors had an unwanted early bye last weekend. Player-coach Ryan McQueen has named Monaro representative prop Thomas Bethke as the first grade captain.

Team news: Ryan McQueen named himself in the No.7 jersey for Round 1, but he seems to have second thoughts. He will wear the No. 1 this week, his regular position. Willie Peace and Brandon Withers will form a strong centre patnership, while Caleb Edwards will be a weapon at five eighth. Bushrangers hooker Liam Oakley has been switched to halfback, with Benjamin Drayton start in the No. 9 jersey.

My tip: This match is tough to tip, given we've not seen the Warriors in action so far. They're probably going to be a little rusty, while the Bushrangers have had the benefit of a serious hit out. In addition, Tuggeranong will be at home. I'll go with the Bushies.

2024 Season record: Bushrangers 0 and 1 (8th, -24)
Warriors 0 and 0 (6th, 0)
Form: Bushrangers WWWLL
Warriors WWWWL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 6 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 30 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 12 Warriors 22 drew Bushrangers 22 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 3 Warriors 16 defeated Bushrangers 4 at Greenway Oval

Belconnen Sharks v Queanbeyan Blues

This match is shaping as the best of the round. The Sharks sit in first place on the ladder, thanks to points differential. Meanwhile, the Blues are in equal fourth place after forcing a 32 all draw against the Kangaroos in extraordinary circumstances.

The Sharks have widely been tipped as a serious contender in 2024 - and they didn't disappoint in their victory over the Gungahlin Bulls, 38-10, at Jamison last Saturday. The Sharks showed their power in the first half, taking a 14-6 lead to the break. But the Bulls produced an exciting try, just before half time, with winger Ethan Miller making a huge break from deep in Gungahlin's own half - and then offloading to fullback Travis Vawdon. The Sharks didn't have it all their own way in the second half. But, they piled on the final three tries in the last 15 minutes of the game. Sharks centre Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai completed his double, before fullback Tristan Eldridge scored two tries of his own.

The Blues produced a stunning comeback in the final stages of the Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval in Round 2. They trailed the Kangaroos, 26-10, at the 65th minute - and it seemed like the 2023 premiers were cruising to a first up win. But the Blues then scored four tries in the space of 10 minutes to take a 32-26 lead at the 75th minute. Bench player Connor Martin scored a double in no time at all - and centre Josh Billing and fullback Connor Williams followed up.

The Kangaroos were not finished. They worked their way up the length of the field in the final minute or two, with Roos second rower Jesse Dent scoring his second try of the day. Kangaroos captain-coach Sam Williams converted from the sideline - after the final hooter - to secure a 32 all draw. The Blues are certainly a different outfit to the Blues of 2023, with the McLachlan brothers impressing in the halves.

Team news: The McLachlan brothers again line up in the halves for the Blues, while Raiders juniors Josh Pokoney and Josh Billing hold their spots in the centres. Zac Patch will start in the No. 6 for the Sharks, while Matt Woolnough will captain the side in the No. 7. The Sharks have named Raiders junior Owen Hromow in the second row.

My tip: I'll go with the Sharks, but don't be at all surprised if the Blues can produce their first win of the season.

2024 Season record: Sharks 1 and 0 (1st, +28)
Blues 0 and 0, 1 draw (Equal 4th, 0)
Form: Sharks LLWLW
Blues LLWLD
Attacking record: Sharks 38, Blues 32 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 10, Blues 32 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 12 Sharks 19 defeated Blues 0 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2023 Round 3 Sharks 26 defeated Blues 10 at Seiffert Oval

Yass Magpies v Gungahlin Bulls

The Yass Magpies won a see-sawing contest with the Bulldogs, 32-28, in Goulburn in Round 2. Both teams scored five tries, with new Magpies recruit Charlie Woolford getting a double in the first half. The Bulldogs took a 24-18 lead to the break. A stunning try to James Russell just before half time delivered the six point lead - after a huge break from winger Jesse Lacey from Goulburn's own end.

It was a tight battle in the second half - until the final stages. The Magpies scored two quick tries to push ahead, 30-24. A penalty goal to Charlie Woolford delivered an eight point lead with a few minutes left, but the Dogs were not done. Goulburn half Nick Douglass scored a last gasp four pointer. The home team declined the conversion - with a minute left on the clock - in the hope of an even more last gasp winning try. But despite receiving a penalty for a high tackle in the final seconds, Goulburn's Hail Mary kick was defused by the Magpies in the in goal after the hooter. Game over.

It seems like the Bulls might have a tough season, after being out-classed by the Sharks at their temporary home of Jamison Oval. Because Gungahlin Enclosed has been closed for a month, following the washout weekend, this match has been switched to Walker Park.

Team news: The Magpies have Raiders junior Lekani Mpaso lining up on the wing, while Charlie Woolford and Mart Smith team up in the halves. Bobby Roberts will steer the Bulls from halfback.

My tip: I'll go with the Magpies on their home ground.

2024 Season record: Magpies 1 and 0 (3rd, +4)
Bulls 0 and 1 (9th, -28)
Form: Magpies LLLWW
Bulls LLLLL
Attacking record: Magpies 32, Bulls 10 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 28, Bulls 38 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 12 Bulls 28 defeated Magpies 12 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
2023 Round 3 Magpies 30 defeated Bulls 10 at Walker Park

Woden Rams v Goulburn Bulldogs

The Rams were expected to be stronger in 2024 under returning, premiership winning, coach Ash Barnes. And last weekend, they showed every sign that they will be. The Bulldogs missed injured halfback, Mitch Cornish last weekend in their loss to Yass - though Cornish was still on the sidelines with his coach's cap on.

Team news: The Rams are largely lining up as they did last week. Steven Ferry at lock is the only addition to the starting XIII, with Bradley Prior dropping out. Prop Tyson Greenwood will captain the Bulldogs. Nicholas Cornish will line up at fullback, while Dillon Rota and William Russell will partner in the centres.

My tip: Rams all the way in this one.

2024 Season record: Rams 1 and 0 (2nd, +24)
Bulldogs 0 and 1 (7th, -4)
Form: Rams WLLLW
Bulldogs LWWLL
Attacking record: Rams 30, Bulldogs 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 6, Bulldogs 32 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 12 Bulldogs 24 defeated Rams 6 at Goulburn Arena
2023 Round 3 Bulldogs 20 defeated Rams 6 at Phillip Oval

Ash Barnes brings Woden Rams together in Canberra Raiders Cup tilt

Jeff Morgan starts rattling off names like Ron Leapai and Sean Maloney. He reckons there's about seven or eight from that premiership-winning side back in blue and gold. What explains his return to the field for Woden?

"The main motivation was Ash Barnes, the coach," Morgan said. "Professionalism is a massive thing for 'Barnesy'. This is more than just a hobby for him, this is his life. His understanding of the game has jumped up, but the way he coaches us hasn't changed too much. The professionalism has always been there."

Rams put on a clinic

The Rams put on a clinic in front of a home crowd on Sunday against the Bulldogs in a one-sided affair. Despite Goulburn hitting the score board first, the Rams flipped the switch and went onto score 11 consecutive tries, including a hat-trick from halfback Brendan Jimenez who has made the code switch from Rugby Union to League look easy. After two dominant wins, the Rams have put a target on their heads as the team to beat this year.

While the Bulldogs will want to put the last two weeks behind them, as they look to join the winners circle when they face the also winless Bushrangers in round four.

West Belconnen Warriors 14 defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 10
Queanbeyan Blues 34 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 28
Gungahlin Bulls 36 defeated Yass Magpies 22
Woden Valley Rams 58 defeated Goulburn City Bulldogs 18

'She's a weapon': The rookie Raider eyeing a return to the top level

Just watch the pink boots. You'll see the Woden Valley Rams five-eighth draw three defenders and put a teammate over on the way to a 40-4 Katrina Fanning Shield win over the Goulburn City Bulldogs at Phillip Oval. The Raiders have shown interest in keeping Ryan on their books - though it may be on a development deal, and those who have seen the playmaker at her best are confident she is capable of shining at the highest level.

"She's just waiting for that moment," mentor Tim Cornforth said.

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 4 Preview

Image

Round 4 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by Saturday's clash between the 2023 premiers, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and the high flying Woden Rams at Freebody Oval. The live stream feature match sees the West Belconnen Warriors host the Gungahlin Bulls on Sunday afternoon.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Woden Valley Rams

There's not much doubt that this shapes as the match of the round. The reigning premiers versus the team that would like to be. It is early days, but this could easily be a preview of the 2024 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final.

The Kangaroos are coming off a bye, having played only one game so far this year. The Queanbeyan derby in Round 2 ended in an incredible draw, 32 all. The Kangaroos led the Blues, 26-10, at the 65th minute - and it seemed like they were cruising to a first up win. Then Blues then scored four tries in the space of 10 minutes to take a 32-26 lead at the 75th minute. Bench player Connor Martin scored a double in no time at all - and centre Josh Billing and fullback Connor Williams followed up.

But the Kangaroos were not finished. They worked their way up the length of the field in the final minute or two, with Roos second rower Jesse Dent scoring his second try of the day. Kangaroos captain-coach Sam Williams converted from the sideline after the final hooter.

The Woden Rams produced a stunning display of football on Sunday at Phillip Oval. The Rams didn't touch the ball for the first seven minutes of the game - after they failed to stop the ball bouncing over the dead ball line from the kick off. The early mountain of possession and territory finally produced a four pointer for centre William Russell.

The Rams went on a scoring spree from that point on - producing 58 unanswered points. Rams fullback Daine Spencer was outstanding - and scored one try from a run of almost 100 metres. Halfback Brendan Jimenez got a hat trick, while winger Sam Gash bagged a double. They posted 11 tries in all. The Bulldogs crossed for two consolation tries in the final minutes - to make the final scoreline of 58-18. Rams coach Ash Barnes wouldn't have been able to complain too much about the late lapses.

The Rams sit on top of the competition ladder, the only team to have produced back to back wins to start the year. They clearly have the best attack - and are not far off having the title of the best defence. The Kangaroos will have their hands full, even with this game being played on home turf.

Team news: The Kangaroos appear to be largely unchanged from Round 2. Halfback Sam Williams, hooker Lachie Ingram and fullback Kaine Pagura fill the key playmaking roles, while veterans Aidan Woods and Josh Ayers feature in the forward pack. The Rams also look strong, naming an almost unchanged line up. Jamal Nchouki has been added on the bench. Brendan Jimenez and captain Sean Maloney partner in the halves, while an in form Daine Spencer again lines up at fullback.

My tip: It is difficult to go past the Rams in this game. However, the Kangaroos should be much tougher competition than the Bushrangers and Bulldogs outfits weakened by injury in Woden's first matches of the year. I won't be surprised if the Roos produce their own show of power this week.

2024 Season record: Kangaroos 0 and 0, 1 draw (7th, 0)
Rams 2 and 0 (1st, +64)
Form: Kangaroos WLWWD
Rams LLLWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 32, Rams 44 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 32, Rams 12 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 11 Kangaroos 38 defeated Rams 18 at Freebody Oval
2023 Round 2 Kangaroos 40 defeated Rams 10 at Phillip Oval

Yass Magpies v Queanbeyan Blues

After a season to forget in 2023, the Queanbeyan Blues are a much different outfit in season 2024. They are being steered around well by the McLachlan brothers in the halves - and they helped orchestrate a 34-28 victory over the Belconnen Sharks last Saturday. The Blues led by two at half time, and took a 28-16 lead at the 60 minute mark.

But with a Blues player in the bin for a professional foul, the Sharks put on two late tries to level the contest. First, Belconnen hooker Thomas Carey dived over the line from dummy half. The Blues then conceded a penalty for being offside at the kick off - and Sharks fullback Tristan Eldridge crossed near the posts in the next set. 28-28. In the final minutes, the Sharks turned over the ball, just short of the try line. A break to Josh Pokoney was halted just short of the halfway line. But the Blues kept charging ahead, with centre Josh Billing scoring the winning try on the final tackle of the match. The George Morseu conversion topped off the six point victory.

The Yass Magpies started their season with a 32-28 win over the Bulldogs in Goulburn. But the Gungahlin Bulls surprised the Magpies at Walker Park on Saturday. The Bulls had been disappointing in their season opener against the Sharks, losing by almost 30 points at Jamison. But the temporarily homeless Bulls took a 24-10 lead to the half time break in Yass - and went onto record a 36-22 win. Five tries to four. Things might get even tougher this week for Yass against an in-form Blues.

Team news: Both teams appear to be largely unchanged. The Magpies will be steered around by halves Charlie Woolford and Marty Smith, while Raiders junior winger Lekani Mpaso and centre recruit Pacey McGregor will partner on one edge. Dylan and Jayden McLachlan again pair up in the halves for the Blues. Josh Billing has been named at centre alongside Josh Pokoney. But there may be a late change, given that Billing has also been named in the Raiders' NSW Cup team to face the Jets on Sunday.

My tip: Blues.

2024 Season record: Magpies 1 and 1 (5th, -12)
Blues 1 and 0, 1 draw (2nd, +6)
Form: Magpies LLWWL
Blues LWLDW
Attacking record: Magpies 26, Blues 33 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 32, Blues 30 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 11 Magpies 36 defeated Blues 20 at Walker Park
2023 Round 2 Blues 32 defeated Magpies 24 at Seiffert Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

This is a clash between the two teams at the bottom of the competition ladder. Both have suffered back to back losses to start the season. The Bulldogs were overrun on Sunday by the Rams, while the Bushrangers fell to the Warriors, 14-10. It was a scrappy affair at Greenway, with the Warriors leading by two points at the break. In the 66th minute, the Bushies allowed a bomb to bounce - and it bounced perfectly for Warriors bench player, Jye Smith. His try delivered a 14-6 lead to the visitors. Tuggeranong winger Joshua Tape scored in the corner in the 79th minute - and the Bushrangers declined the conversion attempt, in the hope of scoring a last gasp match winner. A penalty right on full time gave the home team one final Hail Mary play - but they could not score.

Team news: The Bulldogs will be led by captain Tyson Greenwood at prop, while Adam Jeffery again starts at lock. Liam Oakley will captain the Bushrangers at hooker, while Rhys Djerke takes over at halfback. Wez Alexander-McCarthy retains his place at five eighth. Former Raiders juniors Brigham Moeakiola and Temple Rupapera will partner in the centres.

My tip: The Bulldogs will be tough at home, but I'll go with the Bushrangers - given they were more gritty in their last start.

2024 Season record: Bulldogs 0 and 2 (9th, -44)
Bushrangers 0 and 2 (8th, -28)
Form: Bulldogs WWLLL
Bushrangers WWLLL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 23, Bushrangers 8 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 45, Bushrangers 22 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 11 Bushrangers 46 defeated Bulldogs 6 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 2 Bushrangers 32 defeated Bulldogs 30 at Goulburn Arena

West Belconnen Warriors v Gungahlin Bulls

Sunday's clash sees the Warriors host the Bulls in an unfortunate time slot - up against the Raiders versus Sharks at Canberra Stadium. I can't say the Warriors were firing on all cylinders in their season opener, but they did enough to get a first up win. The Bulls are also last start winners, so it should be an interesting contest. Not much form on the board for either side, really.

Team news: Charlie Henderson was strong last week at halfback for the Warriors, and will partner with Calab Edwards in the halves. Henderson is the brother of Raiders half Mitch Henderson, and joined the SG Ball Raiders this year. He unfortunately missed most of the SG Ball season after breaking his arm in a trial game. Coach Ryan McQueen will again line up in the No. 1 jersey. The Bulls will be directed on field by co-coaches Tre Holten-Williams and Bobby Roberts in the halves.

My tip: I'll go for the Warriors at home, but this game could go either way.

2024 Season record: Warriors 1 and 0 (4th, +4)
Bulls 1 and 1 (6th, -12)
Form: Warriors WWWLW
Bulls LLLLW
Attacking record: Warriors 14, Bulls 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 10, Bulls 29 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 11 Warriors 32 defeated Bulls 18 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 2 Warriors 36 defeated Bulls 22 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 5 Preview

Image

Round 5 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by two big clashes at Queanbeyan on Saturday. The top two teams, the Queanbeyan Blues and Woden Rams, meet at Seiffert Oval in a blockbuster. Meanwhile, across town it'll be third versus fourth when the West Belconnen Warriors visit Freebody Oval for a match up with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

Gungahlin Bulls v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Bulls are coming off a 38-18 loss to the Warriors at Kippax on Sunday - a game that West Belconnen had well under control for the bulk of the match. Fullback Travis Vawdon impressed for the Bulls, scoring a try in the first half, and setting up the last minute try for Ryan Grocott with a strong run. Prop Jason Brown also had an impact up front. The Bulls had a good win against the Yass Magpies (36-20) in Round 2 at Walker Park - but they have found it much tougher going against the Sharks (38-10) and the Warriors so far this season.

The Bushrangers produced their first win of the season on Saturday, beating the Bulldogs (34-24) on their road trip to Goulburn. They scored a total of seven tries - with fullback Jack Davison, five eighth Wez Alexander-McCarthy and bench player Jireh Tiumalu all bagging doubles. Hooker Liam Oakley and lock Brad Buckley were also strong.

Team news: Liam Oakley will get the Bushies on a roll from dummy half, while forward Brad Buckley shifts from lock to prop. Rhys Djerke and Wez Alexander-McCarthy will steer the team from the halves. Jayden Pollard returns on the wing. Tre Holten-Williams is out for the Bulls. Noah Marcantonio will line up at five eighth alongside Bobby Roberts at halfback. Travis Vawdon is also out, with Ryan Grocott moving to fullback and Jesse Croker coming in on the wing.

My tip: Both these teams have a similar record so far in 2024. The concerning thing for the Bulls' three coaches would be the number of points they are leaking. Defence is the biggest difference in the records of the two sides. Bullegariqn go with the Bushies at home.

2024 Season record: Bulls 1 and 2 (7th, -32)
Bushrangers 1 and 2 (6th, -18)
Form: Bulls LLLWL
Bushrangers WWLLW
Attacking record: Bulls 21, Bushrangers 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 32, Bushrangers 23 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 14 Bushrangers 32 defeated Bulls 16 at Gungahlin Enclosed
2023 Round 5 Bulls 42 defeated Bushrangers 16 at Greenway Oval

Belconnen Sharks v Goulburn Bulldogs

The Sharks will be well rested after the bye - and they've had some time to put their last up loss to the Blues (34-28) behind them.

The Bulldogs are certainly finding out what life is like with player-coach Mitch Cornish being stuck on the sidelines, due to a long term injury. They're the only team that has yet to record a win this season.

They lost (34-24) last Saturday to the Bushrangers at home, but they fought hard to stay in the game. The Bulldogs trailed by just two points at half time - and kept on coming back during the game. An intercept try to Wez Alexander-McCarthy near the 50 minute mark, just as the Bulldogs were threatening the line, proved to be a crucial point in the match. It was needed in order to stave off the home team. Bulldogs centre Dillon Rota scored a double.

Team news: Matt Woolnough and Zac Patch will continue their strong halves pairing for the Sharks. They will be opposed by Goulburn’s Nick Douglass and Dane Klower. Raiders junior Owen Hromow will start at lock for the Sharks, with Adam Jeffrey in the No. 13 for the Bulldogs. It should be a good battle between the fullbacks - Tristan Eldridge (Sharks) versus Nicholas Cornish (Bulldogs).

My tip: The Sharks should be too strong in this one.

2024 Season record: Sharks 1 and 1 (5th, +22)
Bulldogs 0 and 3 (9th, -54)
Form: Sharks LWLWL
Bulldogs WWLLL
Attacking record: Sharks 33, Bulldogs 23 points scored per match

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v West Belconnen Warriors

Third versus fourth. The 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup premiers versus the 2023 premiers. The reigning champions, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, looked a bit vulnerable in their opening match of the 2024 season - with the Blues forcing a draw with a flurry of tries in the final stages of the Queanbeyan derby. But last Saturday at Freebody, things mostly went like clockwork for the Roos in their clash with the Woden Rams. Roos captain-coach Sam Williams just seems to have so much time - and he orchestrates his side almost perfectly.

The Roos ended up beating the Rams, 26-18, but some late tries from the Rams made the scoreline closer than it probably should have been. The Queanbeyan outfit dominated possession and territory for much of the match. The Roos led 20-4 at half time and their four first half tries set up the victory. A further try to winger Thomas Williams in the 46th minute - off a Sam Williams bomb to the corner - extended the lead to 20 points. Conceding two tries in the final six minutes would be the only thing worrying the Kangaroos captain-coach.

The West Belconnen Warriors produced a big, 38-18 win over the Gungahlin Bulls on Sunday at Kippax. Five eighth Calab Edwards opened the scoring in the 15th minute, kicking ahead for himself. He followed up quickly, making a break down the right edge and running 40 metres to the try line.

An error from the Warriors late in the first half gave the Bulls their chance - with centre Earldric Pehara making a good run from a scrum play, and setting up fullback Travis Vawdon on the inside. That brought Gungahlin within six points. But the Bulls promptly coughed up the ball on an early tackle, following the kick off. And the Warriors pounced. A shift to the left saw Ryan McQueen throw a dummy and then step through the defensive line - putting second rower Billy Robb over the line. A penalty goal to Brandon Withers right on half time gave the Warriors a 20-6 lead at the break.

The Warriors went further in front two minutes into the second half. Winger Kylan Edwards broke a tackle on the edge and then sent the ball back inside to half Charlie Henderson - and Calab Edwards was backing up for a hat trick. Five minutes later, a brilliant offload from Billy Robb, just as he was about to hit the deck in a tackle, delivered a four pointer to Ryan McQueen.

The Bulls finally jagged a try near the 60 minute mark, with Jade Schumacher darting over from dummy half, scoring under the posts. But the Warriors sealed the match in the 72nd minute, with Ryan McQueen putting centre Willie Peace across the white stripe out wide. Bulls winger Ryan Grocott scored a consolation try in the final minute, after a very good break from Travis Vawdon.

Team news: The clash of the captain-coaches should be a highlight. Half Sam Williams for the Blues versus fullback Ryan McQueen for the Warriors. Throw in the matchup at hooker - Queanbeyan’s Lachie Ingram versus the Warriors’ Harry Brown. Worth the price of admission.

My tip: Saturday's game should be a great contest. I probably underestimated the Kangaroos last week. They were impressive in beating an in form Rams team. I've probably also been underestimating the Warriors. Calab Edwards and Ryan McQueen can be very dangerous. I'll go with the Kangaroos at home... just.

2024 Season record: Kangaroos 1 and 0, 1 draw (4th, +8)
Warriors 2 and 0 (3rd, +24)
Form: Kangaroos LWWDW
Warriors WWLWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 29, Warriors 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 25, Warriors 14 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 14 Kangaroos 26 defeated Warriors 16 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 5 Kangaroos 44 defeated Warriors 6 at Freebody Oval

Queanbeyan Blues v Woden Rams

First versus second. The Queanbeyan Blues are a completely different outfit to the one that finished seventh in 2023 - forfeiting a game and conceding over 500 points along the way. This year the Blues, led by Dylan McLachlan at halfback, sure know how to score points. They beat the Yass Magpies on Saturday at Walker Park, 68-14, scoring 12 tries in the process. McLachlan himself scored a hat trick. Raiders junior centre Josh Billing scored a hat trick. Fullback Connor Williams and hooker Jack Anderson both bagged doubles. McLachlan presently leads the McIntyre Medal count.

The Woden Rams were flying high, heading into last Saturday's clash with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. They had just beaten the Bulldogs, 58-18, at Phillip. However, the Roos proved to be a much tougher proposition. Woden trailed the Queanbeyan outfit, 26-8, with six minutes remaining. But they then produced a stunning try to halfback Brendan Jimenez. Koko Salim is fast - and he showed how fast in making a 40 metre break down the right edge, before offloading inside to Daine Spencer. Spencer then sent it out to Jimenez backing up on the wing. Four points. Salim had earlier shown his pace in scoring his own try. Rams centre Gideon Afemui crossed on the other edge with two minutes left. Rams coach Ash Barnes will take some consolation from those second half tries.

Team news: Some good matchups in this one. At fullback, Woden’s Daine Spencer versus the Blues’ Conor Williams. In the centres, Queanbeyan’s Josh Billing and Josh Pokoney versus the Rams’ Gideon Afemui and Koko Salim. And at halfback, union recruits Dylan McLachlan and Brendan Jimenez, for the Blues and Rams respectively. Jayden McLachlan has been named on the Queanbeyan bench, with Blake Murray at five eighth.

My tip: This should be a terrific game. I'm going to tip the Blues at home... but the attack from the Rams can be brilliant. Don't be surprised if Woden get the win.

2024 Season record: Blues 2 and 0, 1 draw (1st, +60)
Rams 2 and 1 (2nd, +56)
Form: Blues WLDWW

2024 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 6 Preview

Image

Round 6 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the top four clash between the Woden Rams and Belconnen Sharks on Saturday at Phillip Oval. The free live stream game features the West Belconnen Warriors and Yass Magpies at Raiders Belconnen.

Woden Rams v Belconnen Sharks

First versus fourth. Two real contenders in 2024. This clash is definitely the match of the round.

The Rams produced a 24-16 win over the previously undefeated Blues at Seiffert Oval last Saturday. The Rams scored inside the first five minutes, with prop Jesse Martin crashing over beside the posts. A simple crash ball from hooker Kosta Posantzis set it up. The home team struck back in the 15th minute after Jayden McLachlan made a half break and grubbered in behind the Rams' defensive line. Winger George Morseu was the man on the spot, grounding the ball in the in goal. Just before half time, experienced Woden five eighth Sean Maloney fooled the defence, throwing the dummy and then going back inside himself. His try delivered a 12-4 lead for the Rams.

Ten minutes into the second half, prop Jomal Nchouki charged over under the posts, extending the Woden lead. Halfback Brendan Jimenez got the try assist, a terrific short pass. The Rams led 18-4 heading into the final 10 minutes, but a perfectly delayed pass from Blues fullback Connor Williams set up a Blake Murray try. Queanbeyan trailed by eight - and a late charge was certainly not out of the question.

But with five minutes to go, Blues hooker Jack Anderson knocked down an Adam Lucas pass, right on the Queanbeyan goal line. The ball conveniently fell at the feet of Rams' lock Steven Ferry and he just had to plant the ball in the in goal. The Blues weren't finished, with Connor Williams chasing a Dylan McLachlan grubber. Four points. A penalty goal for Woden's Gideon Afemui after the final hooter produced the 24-15 final score line.

The Sharks are also coming off a win last weekend. They scored 10 tries in accounting for the Goulburn Bulldogs at Bruce, 48-8. Sharks fullback Tristan Eldridge was the first to score in the 13th minute, shrugging off some flimsy defence. He went on to score a double, as did halfback Matt Woolnough. Sharks winger Yuri Hromow outdid them both, posting a hat trick. Just before half time, Raiders junior back, Izayah Petricevich scored the try of the match, taking a bomb on the Sharks' own 10 metre line and then running 90 metres to score. That gave Belconnen outfit a 22-4 lead at the break - and they were even more dominant in the second half.

Team news: Ron Leapai and Brad Martin are back in the second row for the Rams, with Scott Swanson dropping to the bench. Matthew Tuialii has been added to the bench. Jesse Bellchambers comes in at hooker for the Sharks, with Thomas Carey dropping to the bench. Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai moves from centre to the second row.

My tip: This should be a great contest. I'm going to go with the Rams, as they just have a bit more form on the board this year. They've yet to have a bye, and they've come up against some tough teams.

2024 Season record: Rams 3 and 1 (1st, +64)
Sharks 2 and 1 (4th, +62)
Form: LWWLW
Sharks WLWLW
Attacking record: Rams 33, Sharks 38 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 17, Sharks 17 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 16 Sharks 20 defeated Rams 14 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2023 Round 7 Rams 32 defeated Sharks 4 at Phillip Oval

West Belconnen Warriors v Yass Magpies

The West Belconnen Warriors suffered a 32-18 defeat at the hands of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval in Round 5. It was the Warriors' first loss of the season. They were right in the game at half time, with with the scores tied up at 12 all. Kangaroos second rower Jesse Dent powered over in the 14th minute, while Queanbeyan fullback Kaine Pagura scored in the corner a few minutes later. Warriors winger Andrew McDonald was on the end of a good backline sweep at the 20 minute mark. Four points in the corner. A try to Raiders junior half, Jaxen Yow soon gave the Roos a six point lead. But the Warriors leveled in the 33rd minute, after the always dangerous Calab Edwards sliced through Queanbeyan line.

Sadly for the Warriors, it was almost all the Kangaroos in the second half. Centre Brayden Draber scored a hat trick for the home team, with Warriors hooker Harry Brown getting a consolation try in the final minutes.

The Magpies are coming off a bye last weekend. They beat the Bulldogs (32-28) in their season opener, but they head into this match after back to back losses to the Bulls (36-20) and Blues (68-14). They conceded 12 tries to Queanbeyan.

Team news: Bayley Maher has been named at fullback for the Magpies, with Lekani Mpaso moving to the wing. Declan Ryan takes over at five eighth. Pacey McGregor moves to the second row, while Cian Ebert and Marty Smith forms a new centre pairing. Brodie Schumacher takes over from Charlie Henderson at halfback for the Warriors, while George Pohahau comes in for Willie Peace at centre. Jye Rushton replaces Harry Brown at hooker.

My tip: The Warriors should be too strong in this one.

2024 Season record: Warriors 2 and 1 (5th, +10)
Magpies 1 and 2 (8th, -66)
Form: Warriors WLWWL
Magpies LWWLL
Attacking record: Warriors 23, Magpies 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 20, Magpies 44 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 16 Warriors 35 defeated Magpies 18 at Raiders Belconnen
2023 Round 7 Warriors 48 defeated Magpies 0 at Walker Park

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Gungahlin Bulls

The Kangaroos are the only undefeated team in the 2024 Canberra Raiders Cup. They closest the 2023 Premiers came to a loss was the Round 2 draw (32-32) with the Blues. Since then they've beaten two of the top teams - the Rams (26-18) and Warriors (32-18). The Bulls are coming off a 30-10 loss to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers last Saturday at Gungahlin. Bulls winger Ethan Miller bagged a double in the match. But they conceded six tries. It would be a huge upset if the Kangaroos lose this one, at home.

Team news: Jake Kiely shifts from the wing to centre for the Roos, with Matthew Wheatley has been added to the wing. Ryan Dodson will partner Sam Williams in the halves. Troy Whiley will start at prop, with Bayley Hitchcock moving to lock. The Bulls have named Noah Marcantonio in place of Bobby Roberts at half back. Jordan Eti will start at prop for Gungahlin, with Jason Brown moving to lock.

My tip: Kangaroos.

2024 Season record: Kangaroos 2 and 0, 1 draw (3rd, +22)
Bulls 1 and 3 (7th, -52)
Form: Kangaroos WWDWW
Bulls LLLWL
Attacking record: Kangaroos 30, Bulls 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 23, Bulls 32 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 16 Kangaroos 58 defeated Bulls 14 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
2023 Round 7 Kangaroos 20 defeated Bulls 0 at Freebody Oval

Queanbeyan Blues v Goulburn Bulldogs

The Blues had their first loss of the year last weekend - falling to the Rams at Seiffert Oval. The McLachlan brothers have been steering the team around well from the halves, while Connor Williams has impressed at fullback. Raiders junior Josh Billing has also been in great form at centre/second row - making some powerful bursts with the ball in hand. The Bulldogs are the only winless team in season 2024. The loss of Mitch Cornish from the playing field has been a huge blow. It is difficult to see them breaking the duck against the Blues at Seiffert.

Team news: The Blues have shifted Connor Williams to five eighth, with Josh Pokoney taking over at fullback. Kalani Skipps comes in at centre. Blake Murray will start at hooker, John Papalii at prop, and Sam Griffin at lock. Nicholas Cornish takes over at halfback for the Bulldogs, with Nick Douglass switching to fullback.

My tip: Blues.

2024 Season record: Blues 2 and 1, 1 draw (2nd, +52)
Bulldogs 0 and 4 (9th, -94)
Form: Blues LDWWL
Bulldogs WLLLL
Attacking record: Blues 38, Bulldogs 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 25, Bulldogs 43 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 16 Bulldogs 54 defeated Blues 6 at Goulburn Arena
