47th min TRY RAIDERS to Peter Taateo under the posts. It follows a Jets error on their own 40 metre line, and the Raiders capitalise. Adam Cook converts.

51st min TRY JETS to Mawene Hiroti in the corner. The Jets regathered their own bomb to the Canberra red zone… and they throw some desperate offloads. The last one very suspect. Looked to go forward. Mawene Hiroti converts his own try.

Generally sharp service. He's generally leaving the playmaking to the halves. His passing does allow the halves to play a bit wider, certainly compared to Starling.

We are dominating field position. The Jets have made a few breaks though the middle, but I've admittedly missed seeing who caused those linebreaks.

Cotric has been good in this game.

It may be just me, but it looks like his shape has changed a bit. He looks a lot more agile.

Trevilyan on for Woolford.

The Jets defence is starting to fall apart here. No line speed and the line is ragged, holes appearing everywhere.

Nice work from Trevelyan out of dummy half there for that try, shaped to go right but switched to the short side on the left. Shift from Waitere to Stuart for a saloon passage.

FULL TIME

Canberra Raiders 42
Newtown Jets 12

Good win in the end, after a scrappy first half.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders NSW Cup side claims strong win over Jets

The Raiders NSW Cup team claimed a commanding 42-12 victory over the Newtown Jets at Canberra Stadium on Sunday afternoon. A strong second half from the Raiders saw them score 30 points in the final 40 to help secure the win. The match began with a slow and steady start, with both teams playing set for set.

Ten metres out, halfback Mitch Henderson managed to grubber to himself and planted the ball over the line. With a successful conversion from Adam Cook, the score was six – nil at 13 minutes.

Last round: The Canberra Raiders produced a 42-12 victory over the Newtown Jets on Sunday. Just a month ago, the two teams had fought out a 28 all draw - and it was a close affair in the first half at Canberra Stadium in Round 8. The attack of both teams was clunky, and there were plenty of errors. Raiders half Mitch Henderson posted a good individual try in the 13th minute. A grubber, a chase. It took until the 36th minute for the next points to be scored - with Nick Cotric making a break out wide and running the ball around to score near the posts. 12-0 in favour of the home team at half time.

The second half was different, with the Raiders wearing the Jets down - and the Newtown defences eventually cracked. Raiders forward Peter Taateo scored under the posts in the 47th minute. Newtown five eighth Mawene Hiroti scored a very dubious try shortly afterwards - after the Jets regathered the ball from a bomb and threw some desperate offloads. However, the final pass was very clearly forward.

Raiders second rower Mitch Spencer struck back almost immediately, running wide. In the 62nd minute, a huge cross field bomb from Mitch Henderson was gathered in by Nick Cotric in the in goal - and he had his second try of the game. Spectacular stuff. Three minutes later, a big break down the middle from fullback Manaia Waitere set up another opportunity for the Raiders. Mitch Henderson took it, scoring his second try of the match. Jed Stuart rounded out the scoring for Canberra in the 75th minute, crossing in the corner. Newtown lock Blake Hosking scored a consolation try with a couple of minutes left.

The Raiders had a healthy 58 per cent share of possession, and almost nine minutes more with the ball than the Jets. Completion rates for both sides were poor - at about 76-77 per cent. But the Raiders produced over 820 more running metres and 200 more post contact metres than the Jets. The Raiders also made more tackle breaks (49-20) and offloads (10-4) and one more line break (6-5). The Jets missed 49 tackles (Raiders 20) and posted 19 ineffective tackles (Raiders 6). That translated into an effective tackle rate of 91 per cent for Canberra and 83 per cent for Newtown.

Emre Guler (216) led the way in running metres, followed by fullback Manaia Waitere (200), Hohepa Puru (164) and Nick Cotric (152). Twelve players broke 100 metres gained, including both halves, Mitch Henderson (101) and Adam Cook (104). Nick Cotric made 12 tackle breaks. Both Waitere and Henderson have been credited with a try assist. Hohepa Puru (38) topped the tackle count, with Noah Martin (35) not far behind.

This round: The Raiders travel to the northern beaches of Sydney in Round 9 - to meet the Sea Eagles at Brookvale. The Sea Eagles are coming off a 36-22 loss to the Eels at HE Laybutt Field on Sunday. The Eels led 22-6 at half time - and by 36-10 after 65 minutes. But Blacktown was able to score two late tries, with winger Raymond Tuaimalo Vaega completing a hat trick right on full time. The Sea Eagles have had recent wins over the Jets (14-10) and Warriors (24-18) - and also recorded losses to the Panthers (26-20) and Dragons (38-10).

The Raiders last met the Sea Eagles in Week 1 of the 2023 NSW Cup finals at North Sydney. Kaeo Weekes scored two second half tries to give the Sea Eagles a 22-12 lead at the 60 minute mark. But the Raiders scored two tries in the space of the next 10 minutes. First, James Schiller bagged his second try of the match - and then fullback Chevy Stewart converted his own try to deliver a two point win for the Green Machine.

Team news: The Raiders have failed to name a full team, with gaps at centre and starting prop. The holes have been left by the promotion of Albert Hopoate, Nick Cotric and Emre Guler to firsts. The team is otherwise unchanged. Simi Sasagi has been named at 18th man for the NRL team, but he and James Schiller could be late additions.

2024 season record: Raiders 5 and 2, 1 draw (4th, +132), 1 and 1 away
Sea Eagles 4 and 4 (8th, -36), 1 and 2 at home
Form: Raiders DWLLW
Sea Eagles LLWWL

The Sea Eagles head onto the field now. Now the Raiders are out there. They've made the Sea Eagles wait a bit.

Sea Eagles kick off. We are underway. And the Raiders are driven back into the in goal on the first tackle. The Sea Eagles get the ball from the short drop out.

26th min ERROR RAIDERS from James Schiller near half way. The Raiders' defence has been impressive, especially on the edges. But they can't keep throwing the ball away. Well maybe they can, as the Sea Eagles lose the ball in a ruck on an early tackle.
