****, what a turn around from what appears to have been a pretty dark time. Kudos to you, mate!Stuat wrote:I'll jump too and share a bit more.
That all stopped when I had an episode. I got rescued by my dad, on the verge of homelessness. In any case, I was brought back to Canberra and ended up doing honors for want of anything better to do. That lead lead to a PhD. I've got a couple of scholarships, so the money isn't too bad and I mainly enjoy it although I don't think I reall want to be an academic.

Thanks man. Mainly just ridiculously fortunate that my folks have been around to bail me out of trouble countless times. The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Dealing with stress, pressure and the day to day grind of life can bear people down, way down.
I was hit hard with depression at a young age and I never even knew I was depressed. I just had no hope, no joy, no spark. Most of the time I just wondered around lost with no direction or purpose. I had no goals or motivation to even try. It was extremely hard.
Recently I was overworking and a lot of pressure was on my shoulders. I didn't heed the advice of close friends and respected associates and it nearly did me in, if I may be frank. I thought I was going to crash and burn.
Thankfully, my faith in Christ and the love of God did pull me through.

Re: Previously unknown facts about ourselves
As above my name is Jason and thats me firing an AK 47 in Nam earlier this year.
I used to go by the username of Cuppy when I signed up, a nickname from my early school. Due to a horrendous hair cut, for which I've forgiven myself as I was only 12.
30yrs old and I've lived in Caringbah for the past 10years. I grew up in Wollongong before the move to the Sutherland Shire for work.
I'm a Cabinetmaker, I did my apprenticeship at a joint in Rockdale
I now have a company called Stream Line Joinery Pty Ltd which has been in existence for 4 years now. I have 12 employees and I need more, It's hard to find good help. So if anyone knows a good cabinetmaker in southern Sydney let me know.
If anyones interested here's my company's facebook page,
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stream-L ... 4647368822
I live with my girlfriend of 2yrs and I'm happy to admit she's the one for me. I meet her 3yrs ago in the US, she's from Perth. I've also got her emotionally attached to the Raiders, Its good to have someone close to share the highs and the lows with.
I have a soft spot for the Sharks and used to love the Steelers. Don't like the Dragons and have loved the Raiders since the early 90's when Big Mal had a caravan in the same park as my parents at Burranjuck dam. Learn't how to water ski at 3, was on 1 at 6, and barefooting by 11. Still love to ski but have very little time too and I'm not as fearless any more.

Actually, I had originally said no to going, but my wife told me that everyone from her work was going along and implied that they were all taking their partners too. Not wanting to let her down, I relented. I was mighty miffed though when I got there and found that I was the only partner (and thus the only male) amongst a group of fifteen women in their mid-20's.
btw, I've got a load more musical theatre I've been to, but that's a story for another day

Well I've been reading this thread for a while and thought it was right to post. Also, sorry to hear about all the hardships in everyone's lives but it seems you are all very strong and willing people so here goes:
- I'm 23, male
- I definitely read the GH more than I post
- I play old games for the nostalgic value
- One of my aims is to never get into debt unless I'm purchasing a property or something to invest in
- I have bought shares just so I can learn how to live with debt
- My girlfriend of three years has bipolar
- One of my pet hates is when an Australian business spells organisations with a z
- I'm petrified of spiders especially daddy-long-legs
- I'm convinced everyone should belong to a forum
- And my claim to fame is my dad once worked on a construction site with Saddam Hussein

Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

Re: Previously unknown facts about ourselves
Hmm might as well add some more..
-Got a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and Technology from University of Sydney and managed to graduate with first class honours (don't know how, spent most of the time playing cards in the cafeteria )
-Born in the Philippines, moved here end of '88 and didn't end up going back to visit till last year (actually, it was also my first time out of the country since coming here - over seas travel was just never one of the things I felt that I HAD to do, thoroughly enjoyed the trip though)
-The 2nd time I ever flew on a plane (the first being when I came to Australia) was to go sky diving - was awesome, definitely recommend the experience.
-I have a some-what split identity. People I know through family and through work know me by one name (a family nickname), and people I know through school and uni know me by my real name (the one on my license/passport etc) - some (maybe most) only know me by one name and not the other
-I have no idea where or how my parents came up with my name, and I've never known of anyone with the same name - back in 2000 while I was studying and internet was starting to get bigger, my first name would come up with no results at all on Google. These days, 90% of results are of me - the rest are Turkish (I think there's a Turkish word with my name in it), or some random code, and one where some random person has named a fictional Elven country after me in some fantasy writing forum

Previously unknown facts about ourselves
Yeah, at woolgarlo caravan park. It was a good 20 years ago mind you. A lot of the boys used to head there during the off season as well.Greenbits wrote:Big Mal used to own a caravan at Burrinjuck?
Imagine a current day team heading to burrinjuck dam for the weekend. Very unlikely.

Ill try mate, my work situation is...lets say difficult at the mo, for example I was made feel guilty when I took an rdo a few months back after not having a day off in nearly a year, all because I have the use of one of the shop cars, I conveniently chose the quietest day of the week too.dubby wrote:Sad news about your mum mateVictorTheViking wrote:The bit about overworking and not having motivation sounds identical to how I am at present...although I've just watched my mother suffer through breast cancer and chemo..dubby wrote:yep.Michael wrote:This thread just goes to show that mental health issues are far more widespread than people seem to think.
But please, take it from someone who has overworked as well..............rest up. Take a few days off and balance your life. It makes all the difference
This job is only a means to an end, once I finish uni I'm outta there

Re: Previously unknown facts about ourselves
I love this thread, there's only one person on here that I actually know and I know (or knew) very little about the rest of you.
- My name's Jeff.
- I'm 19
- I like coffee and Italian food
- I have 3 older siblings, a sister living in Sydney, a brother in Canberra, and a brother in Darwin.
- I grew up on a farm near Tarago from age 7 onwards, travelling in and out of Canberra everyday for school. I moved back into society last year here in Goulburn, I don't like it here..
- I've been obsessed with the band Alter Bridge since I was 11 years old, went to see them 3 times in February and had the happiest moment of my life when I got to meet and talked to the band for a good 10 minutes or so. I now have photos of myself and the band and a signed shirt framed on my wall.
- While everyone is sharing their depression stories, I was in a bad way for a bit over a year which all started when I was in a car accident with my two best mates while I was still in school a year and a half ago. It might sound silly to other people but meeting my idols in February has helped me keep my chin up about life in general. I now make an effort to think positive and I'm doing my best to get a job that will let me move out (down to Melbourne) and start over.
- I don't think my personality is all that clear through my posts on here. I'd like to think I'm a nice person, I'm not always in the best of moods but I'd still rather joke around with people and act happy rather than bringing them down as well.
- Username: my favourite show is Scrubs, I started using the name B_Hammock (short for banana hammock) when I was 14 or 15, I just changed it to Green Hammock a while ago on here because it seemed appropriate.
