Brilliant effort by the HM squad. Great game to watch and both teams played well.

The less said about the SGBall the better. One of the worst refereeing performances I've ever seen. Both sides had some shocking decisions go against them, but the ref's infatuation with trying to turn it into a seven-a-side match for the Raiders was a joke.

Spirited Raiders go down fighting
Jared Dorrington

An abundance of dubious penalties has led to the under 18 Raiders being defeated 22-38 by the Dragons in a highly eventful match at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

The Raiders were in control of the match until winger, Jonathon Reuben was sent off midway through the first-half for leading in with his knees while attempting to save a try.

The Raiders were dealt a double blow when the referee awarded an 8-point try for the infringement.

To make matters worse for the Raiders, their skipper Mitchell Cornish and Hooker Josh Mitchell were both sin-binned for separate incidents in the second half.

Raiders coach, Peter Marrapodi refused to blame the referees for the loss despite the number of decisions that went against the home side.
“We’ll be more disciplined next time. We’re not going to use the referee as an excuse”, he said.

Front row forward, Benji Reeves was concussed on the first hit-up of the second half when an opposing player’s shoulder made heavy contact with his head.

Despite losing Reeves and being three players down, winger Izzi Dawe was able to intercept a certain try and race 90 metres to score between the posts. The score was 22-28 with 15 minutes to go.

A miraculous Raiders comeback was crushed when what appeared to be a double movement was awarded as a try to the Dragons with 7 minutes to go.

Cornish was happy with the effort his team showed despite the final result.

“I’m really proud of all the boys, they really stuck in. Especially with ten guys”, said the skipper.

The Raiders opened the scoring early in the game after a slick backline movement saw Reuben score in the corner.

The try was converted, though the Dragons hit back soon after to reduce the gap to 6-4.

A 40-20 gave the Raiders good field position, and Cornish scored soon after with a solo effort which saw him beat three defenders and muscle his way past the fullback.

The Raiders extended their lead when two great offloads saw Scott Kalsbeek score under the posts.

The Dragons 8-point try followed and was preceded with another try to put the visitors 16-18 in front at the break.

The Dragons scored two successive trys after the break to have them 28-16 in front with the Raiders reduced to 10 players.

Raiders players Tikirahi Macpherson and Mitchell were both placed on report during the match.

Late try hands Harold Matthew’s Raiders win
Courtney Rees

A length of the field try to winger Ryan Miller in the dying stages was just enough for the Raiders Harold Matthews Cup team to overcome St George 24-18 at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

In a see-sawing match where neither team could gain any big advantage, both teams had many opportunities to score more points, but the combination of strong defence and too many handling errors nullified that.

St George looked like they were going to respond to Miller’s try with a last gasp effort of their own through Afred Seto only for half back Tyran Sulllivan to come across in cover defence and force the bigger bodied Seto into touch right on the try line.

Raiders coach Brett Maron was impressed with the Raiders performance. “They really stood up a gear this week. They were very disappointing last week so to turn that around and really step up and really work hard and get a good result in the end, albeit as nerve racking as it was, was excellent.”

The Raiders opened the scoring in the 8th minute after five-eighth Cody Wynnick put a kick through that the Dragons’ failed to collect and Wynnick dived on the loose ball underneath the goalposts. Jordyn Ballard was successful with the conversion attempt.

The Dragons then put the Raiders under pressure and after sustaining a lot of Dragons attack the Raiders’ defensive line broke with Michael Tadros scoring to level the scores at 6-all.

Hooker Ryan McQueen took full advantage of good field position and the slow reaction of the Dragons’ marker defence and crossed from dummy half. Ballard was successful with the boot and gave the Raiders a 12-6 lead which they took into half time.

The Dragons hit back shortly and levelled the match after a try to Hame Sele. But the Raiders again answered with winger Bowen Beath scoring after a slick backline movement off a scrum and gave the Raiders a 16-12 lead.

The Dragons took a 18-16 lead mid way through the second half through a try to Robert Taufa and after scoring the Dragons looked very dangerous in attack and were given a lot of possession through Raiders errors but the scrambling Raiders defence held strong.

Four minutes from fulltime Miller was given the ball after a Dragons’ downfield kick, where he raced the down the left edge to score underneath the posts but not before raising his arm in an exuberant post-try celebration.

2011 Round 5 Canberra Raiders V Western Sydney Academy

In Round 5 Harold Matthews, the Canberra Raiders head up the Hume Highway to face a Western Sydney Academy side which sits one win outside the top-eight.

The Academy boys will be well rested after a weekend off while, the Raiders will still be nursing a few bumps and bruises from their hard-fought 22-18 win over St George in the nation’s Capital.

Tyrell Fuimaono will have his work cut out for him when he faces up against in-form Raiders flyer Ryan Miller. Miller has been everywhere for the Green Machine in the early stages and, if the Raiders forwards can gain ascendancy early, he should add a few more ‘meat pies’ to his tally this weekend.

In SG Ball, the Western Sydney Academy of Sport side will be looking to register its first win of the season against the Raiders out at Windsor.

SG Ball: Raiders lose in thriller
Jared Dorrington

The Raiders have let slip a 14 point lead to be beaten by bottom placed Western Sydney Academy 24-18 on Saturday.

Western Sydney Academy scored three unanswered converted tries and a penalty in the final 25 minutes to win their first match of the season at Windsor Sports Complex.

Despite heavy rains and muddy conditions the Raiders played expansive football and looked well on top of their opponents for the majority of the game, but fell away towards the back end of the second half.

Raiders Coach, Peter Marrapodi said he was disappointed at the way his team lost.

“It’s really disappointing considering it’s a game we should have won... We were playing really well, and to get up like that and then stop playing footy is really disappointing”, he said.

The Raiders made a perfect start to the match when front row forward Sam Everett pushed his way through three defenders to score in the 5th minute. Josh Mitchell converted to make the score 0-6.

Three consecutive penalties to the home side saw them bounce back in the 17th minute, though the conversion was missed from in front.

The Raiders extended their lead in the 28th minute when halfback Mitchell Cornish threw an inside ball to fullback Carl Johnson who out-ran the fullback to score in the corner.

A sideline conversion from Mitchell took the score to 4-12 at the half-time break.

Despite a penalty against the Raiders for being offside on the kickoff they were next to score in the 38th minute when Haydon Pengelly burrowed over to score next to the posts. Cornish converted the last Raiders try of the match.

Two more converted tries to Western Sydney Academy in the 45th and 54th minute narrowed the deficit to two points.

The Raiders conceded a penalty with 11 minutes to go right in front with Sydney taking the two points to level the score.

The Raiders had several opportunities to score in the final ten minutes but failed to capitalise, though Western Sydney Academy did in the 53rd minute which was converted from the sideline.

Raiders captain, Mitchell Cornish was frank as to how his team lost the match despite being in front 14 points early in the second half.

“Too much drop ball gives the other team too much opportunity”, he said.

Despite losing their second consecutive match and losing touch with the top 8, Marrapodi says he’s certain his team will be playing finals footy.

“We certainly have the talent there to go a long way in this competition... the thought hasn’t even crossed my mind to miss out on the finals”, he said.

Harold Matthews Raiders lose on the road
Jared Dorrington

A rare scrum loss against the feed has led to the Raiders losing their third match of the season 18-0 against Western Sydney Academy.

The Raiders conceded a mountain of possession throughout the match and eventually cracked, letting in two converted tries in the final eight minutes.

The match at Windsor Sports Complex on Saturday was played under constant heavy rain resulting in a number of errors from both sides.
Raiders coach, Brett Maron said he was disappointed in the way his team played.

“Both teams struggled in the conditions, but they handled them better than we did... we just played quite poorly”, he said.

Despite Western Sydney Academy having a number of opportunities in the Raiders 20 metre zone in the first half, the Raiders did well to only be 6-0 down at the break.

The Raiders started the second half with much more enthusiasm than the first and narrowly missed an opportunity when fullback, Jordyn Ballard received a forward pass to break the defence 10 metres away from the try line.

In a match defining play, Western Sydney Academy won a scrum against the feed 40 metres out from the Raiders line with nine minutes to go.

The Raiders failed to get their defensive line in order after the scrum loss and subsequently conceded a try three plays later.

The try was converted to give the home side a 12-0 lead.

Western Sydney Academy scored again three minutes later to rub salt into the Raiders wounds.

Raiders captain, Sam Jennings-Mays was emotionally deflated after the loss.

“Just not enough ball control. Just not enough communication out there today”, he said.

Coach, Maron summed up the match in four words.

“Horrible conditions, horrible game”, he said.

Despite the loss both captain and coach were adamant their team would bounce back in their next match against North Sydney.

Raiders scrape home against Norths
Courtney Rees

The Canberra Raiders managed to hold off a fast finishing North Sydney 28-20 in the SG Ball match held at Begnell Oval in Belfield on Sunday.

Despite leading 24-10 at half time the Raiders appeared to fall asleep in the second half much to the displeasure of coach Peter Marrapodi.

Marrapodi described the performance as “really up and down” and highlighted that this was not the first time the Raiders had slipped up it the second half of games. “It’s happened a couple of times over the last few weeks, where we have dropped our intensity in the second half and really given the other team a chance to get back into it.

“We are happy with the two points but the performance isn’t what it needs to be. If we want to be contenders we just have to be a lot more professional,” he said.

Norths jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after Raiders fullback Jack Ahearn failed to collect a kick and his opposite number Blake Spencer picked up the loose ball and scored under the posts.

Ahearn hit back in the 6th minute running 50 metres to score in the corner. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the Raiders trailed 6-4.

The lead was shortly forthcoming with Ahearn becoming the provider for Jonathon Reuben who scored another long range Raiders try after eight minutes.

The Raiders had their third try just four minutes later with Ryan Gowing benefitting from a strong run by Shane Duck to score.

In the young Raiders’ first attacking opportunity after holding out Norths for three straight sets of six Ahearn crossed for his second try after darting from dummy half.

The conversion and a successful penalty for an elbow on Ahearn when scoring the try by Gowing, gave the Raiders a 24-6 lead in the 28th minute.

A penalty against Canberra while in possession of the ball gave away good field possession and Norths responded through a try to Mat Hardes, which took the score to 24-10.

Two tries in five minutes in the second half gave the Bears an opportunity for a comeback win only for the Raiders to put the match beyond doubt with nine minutes remaining through Josh Baker, who worked tirelessly all day, scoring from a Gowing line break.

Captain Mitchell Cornish labelled the win as “shaky”. “We sort of dropped down to their level and didn’t capitalise on our momentum we had early in the half and then dropped off in the second half which wasn’t our game plan,” he said.

The Raiders will look to improve against the Sydney Roosters next Saturday at Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan.

Seven tries haul sees Raiders cruise to victory
Courtney Rees

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews side have come away with an impressive 34-6 win over North Sydney on Sunday at Begnell Oval in Belfield.

The young Raiders were emphatic from the first minute to the last, with a 40-20 kicked by five-eighth Ryan McQueen in the opening set and Ryan Miller crossing for the Raiders’ seventh try in the final minute.

Coach Brett Maron was pleased with the result but could still see plenty of room for improvement within the side.

“We talked a lot about controlling the ball and still we turned over some possession in our quarter to them, so probably that is the key thing that we could have done better. But despite giving them a lot of ball we managed to defend really well, scramble, and that’s what is pleasing.”

Maron was also very happy with the key positional changes made moving Isaac Hamad to hooker from the centres and McQueen from the hooking role to five-eighth.

Hamad, described by Maron as a “revelation at hooker”, opened the scoring after three minutes, following McQueen’s 40-20 with a try from dummy half. Jordyn Ballard converted the try.

Hamad had his second seven minutes later, again scooting over from dummy half. Ballard converted to give the Raiders a 12-0 lead.

Norths then put the Raiders under a lot pressure with sustained periods in attack inside the Raiders’ half and despite some strong defence the Raiders were unable to hold out big prop Joe Nakhoul.

The try was converted which left the Raiders leading 12-6 after 28 minutes.

Winger Tyran Fielding answered for the Raiders with a try right on half time. Fielding was on the end of fullback Jordyn Ballard’s cut out pass and gave the Raiders a 16-6 lead at half time.

The Raiders continued to dominant after the break with Ballard scoring the opening try of the second half and was successful with the boot to give the Raiders a 22-6 lead.

The lead was extended by McQueen after the crafty five-eighth was simply showed too much speed for the Norths defenders to cross the line off a scrum.

A 95 metre intercept try to Fielding and a last minute try to Ryan Miller completed the victory for the Raiders.

Captain Sam Jennings-Mays said that the side played better as a team this week and was happy with the defensive effort, especially the speed of the defensive line.

The Raiders will take on the Sydney Roosters next Saturday at Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan.

Disappointing that the Junior Reps this week are still being played at the normal time of 1pm Matts, 2.30 SG Ball. Would have thought we could play a bit earlier so you could go to both SG ball and Toyota Cup.

OR even better play the Junior Reps at Canberra Stadium before hand. Some other teams do it and if the weather is good the ground will be fine.

Couldn't agree more. We're driving down to watch my son play and will then have a mad dash to over to Canberra Stadium to see the main game. Thought they could have kicked off an hour earlier at least.

Roosters have got a stack of injuries and its also the first time this season that the SG Ball teams completion rate has been greater than 60%. I think they completed 85% of their sets and that makes a massive difference. There's some good footballers in the team, but they seem to lose concentration at times. Even on Sautrday it was evident. They were leading 28-6 6-7 mins out from half time and allowed two late tries to the Roosters to bring them back into the game. Thankfully they quickly put the game beyond reach in the 2nd half.

Second-half blitz sees SG Ball Raiders smash Roosters
Jared Dorrington

The Raiders have secured their first back-to-back victory of the season smashing third-placed Roosters 66-18 at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

The Raiders were clinical in their performance, particularly in reversing their recent second-half woes, scoring seven unanswered tries after half-time.

The home-side could not have hoped for a better start to the match when they led 22-0 after 18 minutes.

The Roosters bounced back towards the end of the first-half to reduce the deficit to ten points, going into the break trailing the Raiders 28-18.

A half-time spray from coach Peter Marrapodi inspired the Raiders into a dominate second-half display, though Marrapodi refused to take credit for the victory.

“I’ll give the credit to those guys. They’ve been really keen to put on a good second-half performance.

“All the boys were really pumped up to impress in that second half, and they did”, said Marrapodi.

Halfback and Skipper, Mitchell Cornish was equally impressed with his team’s performance.

“Have to really applaud the boys because they knew our season was on the line. Our second-half performances this year have been our worst attribute."

Peter (Marrapodi) said at half-time to make this second-half count, and we did, and came away with a good win”, said Cornish.

The Raiders were first to score when 5’8 Ryan Gowing threw a cut-out pass to a flying Simon Lienisch who tip-toed down the left touch-line to score.

Cornish showed off his kicking skills in the first eight minutes with a 40-20 and a clever banana-kick in the following set which was taken by fullback Jack Ahearn to score under the posts.

Two quick tries to Raiders outside backs Jeremy Hawkins and Tyson Endacott followed, with the Roosters scoring their first try soon after to take the score to 22-6.

Hawkins scored his second try of the game in the 25th minute, and was followed by back-to-back Roosters tries before the break.

The momentum the Roosters held into the half-time break switched to the home side early in the second-half when Jonathon Reuben dived over for the first of his three tries.

Cornish setup the next try with a deft chip kick over the defensive line which was taken by a flying Hawkins to score, and followed it up with a try of his own two minutes later.

Reuben completed his hattrick scoring back-to back tries, which included a 90 metre intercept in the 59th minute.

Two late tries in the final eight minutes to Ahearn and Josh Mitchell topped off a dominant Raiders win.

Harold Matthews Raiders lose first home game of season
Jared Dorrington

The Raiders have experienced a 48-point turnaround from last week’s dominate win, losing 12-32 to the Roosters at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

The loss means the Raiders must win against the Sharks in a fortnight to make the semi-finals.

The Raiders led halfway through the first-half 6-4 following a try to winger Ryan Miller which was set-up and converted by fullback Jordyn Ballard.

The Roosters scored a further five tries to put the result beyond doubt, with a consolation try scored by Raiders centre Bowen Beath after the fulltime siren.

The Raiders were impatient in their attack, handing the ball over numerously and pushing passes playing catch-up footy.

Lock forward and skipper Sam Jennings-May was disappointed in his team’s performance, but was already focused on their must win clash against Cronulla at home.

“We got a bye next week. So just two weeks to work on what we’ve got, what we did wrong today, and then aim up for Cronulla.

“When they scored we dropped our heads and just let them into the game with mistakes.

“It’s pretty devastating. I thought we had a good chance today and just didn’t perform when we came out”, said the skipper.

Coach Brett Maron was “frustrated” at his team’s performance given a semi-final spot was guaranteed with a win. Though Maron was confident his team would bounce back.

“We’re a chance. We’ll go back and hopefully learn some lessons out of that game. We got a week off to recover, which is good considering we got a few injuries out of today’s game”, he said.

The Raiders narrowly missed an opportunity to score after the half-time siren when Ballard retrieved a Roosters grubber-kick, beat three defenders and raced down the left touch-line.

With a try seeming imminent, he was ankle-tapped by a Roosters cover defender and subsequently tackled to round off the first-half.

The Raiders came out firing early in the second half, coming close to scoring on two occasions. Tyron Sullivan was held up over the try-line from a strong charge, and Daniel Buitendam was tackled just short by a scrambling Roosters defence.

That puts the boys up to 5th now. Another home win next week against the Sharks would set them up nicely for the finals

WA Reds unlucky to lose against Canberra Raiders

An injury reduced Cash Converters WA Reds were unlucky to lose their game against the Canberra Raiders, being beaten in the last five minutes 24 to 18.

In a mixture of crucial referee decisions and a two man bench in the second half, the Reds were four points up with seven minutes to go, but could not hold the Raiders out in the closing stages.

They went close with a minute to go, but were called for a forward pass 3 metres from the line which could have given them the chance to level the scores.

The Reds went in at half time 4 to 10 down but always were in the game. Canberra coming off a big win last week made too many handling errors to the credit of a determined Reds defense.

The second half saw the Reds working their plays better with the turning point a short kick to break the line which was picked up by Louie David allowing Eddie Proudler to score after a 30 metre run.

It was an arm wrestle for the rest of the game, with the local crowd sensing a win for the Reds which was not to come.
Coach Andrew Korn was proud of the way the team played but disappointed with losing some critical decisions which appeared to turn the game.

“The guys tried so hard and gave everything they had. We had injuries coming into the game and then lost some more before the end”.

“They deserved to win today and I feel we were unlucky, but am happy to the credit of the team that there was nothing left in the tank at the end”.

This is the final round of junior reps and a home ground match!

The senior teams are in Townsville, so no excuse for not getting out and supporting the junior teams on Saturday.

The Raiders SG Ball team is currently in fifth on the ladder and can secure a finals spot against the 12th placed Sharks.

The Harold Matthews team is currently in 10th on the ladder, and should be favourites to beat the Sharks... but it's too complicated for me to work out if they can realistically secure a finals spot! Hopefully they can with a victory.

Full Time (SG Ball) Cronulla 26 d Canberra 4

A win could have secured a spot in the finals, but the loss probably means they're out I suspect.

GE, two ways of looking at it. Firstly it was good that we simply had a team in the comp and well done to the boys to stick tough all the way through.

However, it really was an easy draw. To get to play North Sydney, Central Coast, Western Australia, Western Sydney Academy, Cronulla etc is a very soft draw. I don't think we played Wests, Illawarra, Penrith, Parra, Dogs at all who are always the strong sides. So to be honest I think we would have only been cannon fodder if we got there.

In the end I only saw one game, because all the home games clashed with Raiders first grade and in that game we kept having players sent off so had nothing. The big win against the Roosters would have to be the highlight of the season.

Despite the loss, the Raiders have qualified for the finals in SG Ball. They take on Western Suburbs next week.
