Of course last time we won SG Ball we came from 8th position. However, I won't be putting my house on the Raiders in this one.

But best of luck to the boys.

SG Ball: Raiders sneak into finals
Jared Dorrington

The Canberra Raiders lost their fourth game of the season going down 4-26 to the Cronulla Sharks at home.

Despite the loss, the Raiders did enough throughout the year to book a semi-final berth and will play minor premiers Western Sydney Magpies this coming weekend.

Not much separated the two sides at half-time with Cronulla holding onto a narrow 4-10 lead at the break.

The Raiders were out-played by the Sharks in the second-half through three unanswered tries by the away team.

Raiders coach Peter Marrapodi was disappointed at his team’s inability to convert their chances into points.

“Execution let us down today. We had plenty of chances but failed to convert.”

Halfback and Captain Mitchell Cornish was equally disappointed and deflated after the match.

“It’s out of our hands now. We have to wait for other results to go our way,” said Cornish.

Luckily for Cornish and the Raiders, other results did go their way, guaranteeing a semi-final spot for the green machine.

The Sharks were first to score with a converted try in the 6th minute.

Hooker Josh Mitchell set up the Raiders only try through a grubber-kick which was secured by second row forward Josh Baker to score. The missed conversion had the Sharks in front 4-6.

Cronulla extended their lead with an unconverted try two minutes out from half-time.

The Raiders were attacking the Sharks defence and looked to have developed an overlap when a Cronulla player sprinted out of the line, intercepted the ball and racing 50 metres to score under the posts.

Canberra remained in the match until Cronulla scored in the 59th minute, dispelling any chance of a miraculous Raiders comeback.
The Sharks rubbed salt into the Raiders wounds with a try one minute from fulltime.

The Canberra Raiders have their work cut out for them when they play the undefeated Magpies in week one of the finals.

The Raiders must win to remain in this year’s competition.

Harold Matthews: Raiders lose final round 20-24
Jared Dorrington

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthew’s team has lost their last match of the season, going down 24-20 at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

The loss sees the team miss the finals series for the year.

The Raiders let a 10 point lead slip with the Sharks snatching victory through a converted try in the 56th minute after trailing most of the match.

Canberra led by two points with 12 minutes to go and had a few opportunities to put the match out of reach for the visitors.

Cronulla capitalised on their opportunities with a try in the final four minutes to seal the match.

The Raiders started strongly, leading the sharks 14-4 after 18 minutes through tries to Jason Basic, Ryan Mcqueen and Bowen Beath.

Raiders coach Brett Maron was disappointed with his team losing after leading early, but took positives out of the match.

“Despite our loss, we really gelled well together as a team, I thought” said Maron.

Raiders skipper Sam Jennings-Mays said the players were to blame for their below-par season.

“We under achieved this year, but we had great coaching staff,” said the skipper.

The Raiders struck early in the 3rd minute when prop forward Basic scored under the posts, though the Sharks hit back straight after to make the score 6-4 in favour of the home side.

The Raiders were next to score in the 14th minute when 5’8 Mcqueen barged his way through several defenders to score out wide.

Four minutes later, Raiders fullback Jordyn Ballard caught the blindside defence napping with a clever pass from dummy-half saw left-centre Beath crash over.

A few penalties against the Raiders led to the Sharks next try which was converted to narrow the deficit to four points at the half-time break.

Cronulla blasted out of the blocks in the second half scoring a length of the field unconverted try to level the score 14-14.

The Raiders took the lead back in the 40th minute when their top-tryscorer Ryan Miller weaved his way through the Sharks defence to score under the posts.

Cronulla then lifted their intensity, scoring in the 48th minute. The conversion was missed to make the score 20-18 in favour of the Raiders with 12 minutes remaining.

2011 SG Ball Finals Wk 1: Canberra Raiders V Western Suburbs

Image

The Canberra Raiders head to Campbelltown Stadium to face Minor Premiers Western Suburbs in what is a massive ask for the team from the nation’s capital.

Wests have all the boxes ticked, good halves, size upfront and speed out wide. Mitchell Brasington has been in excellent form all year for the Magpies and he has been dually supported by the attacking brilliance of James Tedesco and David Nufoaluma.

The Raiders have shown they can test the best and their chances will lay in the hands of their sizable forward pack. If they can get an edge over the Wests pack then they are chance of an upset but let the likes of Lalogafu and Fiagatusa dominate then kiss season 2011 goodbye.

Great victory. Probably hard to say when you concede 30 points in 70 mins but I thought our defence was outstanding. They were a very good side wests. That was easily the highest quality match I have seen at this level.

SG Ball: Raiders cause upset of the season
Jared Dorrington

The Canberra Raiders have advanced to week two of the finals following their upset win over Minor Premiers Western Suburbs Magpies 30-41 at Campbelltown Stadium.

The Magpies went through their regular season undefeated but trailed a vastly improved Raiders side 12-18 at halftime.

Two quick Magpies tries after the break wasn’t enough to overcome a determined Raiders who topped off their win with a Jack Ahearn field goal in the final two minutes.

The victory was slightly soured with winger Jonathon Reuben sent off for a high tackle in the 66th minute.

Raiders skipper Mitchell Cornish was lost for words after the match.

“Words can’t explain how I feel at the moment. So happy,” said Cornish.

“I’m so proud of the boys,” added Raiders Coach Peter Marrapodi.

“That last week was easily the best training we’ve had before a game, and it showed today,” he said.

Western Suburbs started strongly with a converted try in the 5th minute, though the Raiders hit back soon after when a grubber kick hit the up-right and bounced favourably for hooker Josh Mitchel to score next to the posts.

The Raiders missed an easy conversion before conceding another try in the 14th minute to make the score 12-4 in favour of the home side.

Raiders centre Jeremy Hawkins was next to score in the 21st minute from a Raiders set play on the halfway line.

Two quick Raiders tries in the final three minutes of the first half to Reuben and Hawkins had the away team ahead at the break.

The Magpies started the second half strongly with two tries in the 38th and 41st minutes to have them in front 24-18.

With the game seemingly in the balance, Cornish took the line on 20 metres out from the Magpies try line, threw a dummy and sliced through the defence to level the scores following a successful conversion.

Back-to-back tries to Raiders second row forwards Josh Baker and Jeff Lynch had them in front 24-34 with 15 minutes remaining.

Western Suburbs scored next in the 59th minute to keep the game alive, though a Tyson Endacott try three minutes later sealed a Raiders victory.

The Raiders are no longer flying under the radar, and will have to repeat their efforts next week against the Bulldogs to book a spot in the Grand Final.

Good luck to the boys tomorrow. Obviously going to be another tough ask, but after last week anything is possible.

Can't believe Jonathon Rueben is playing. He got sent off last week. No doubt it was an accident but it was a fair coat hanger!!!!
