Nikita Tszyu began his professional career with an impressive 2nd round TKO victory over Aaron Stahl last Thursday night. A powerful puncher with both hands. Will need to see him against a more seasoned opponent, but he looks very strong and was several grades above Stahl.

Meanwhile brother Tim Tszyu will have his first fight in the USA on March 27 against American Terrell Gausha who has a 22-2-1 record. This will be another tough test which he must win to get his title shot later this year.

SBW in a first round KO of the former AFL hardman Barry Hall. He has now reportedly called out Paul Gallen after Gallen has said he wants to get in the squared ring with him for the last decade. SBW looks very fit and I reckon will easily clean up with more ex-footballer pay days.

Tim Tszyu wins by a 12 round decision after being knocked down in the first round of his match against Terrell Gausha. Still undefeated is Tim and looking for his deserved title shot.

Tyson Fury wins by KO over Dillian Whyte in Round 6 and wants to retire on top of the Boxing world. He then suggests he might try wrestling or mma. What about action movies Tyson? Both goodies and baddies are paid well. He is easily the best Heavy Weight of the current era.

Harry has decent skills but lacks the punching power to be a top flight professional. Nikita Tszyu's heavy hands will take him further.

Agree Dubs, Garside has the boxers craft. He reminds me a bit of a young John Famechon. Skilled at not being hit and building up the points to win matches or have the match stopped in his favour. He is still only 24 and early in his professional career.

Nikita Tszyu is in another category. The blood lines and regular sparring with his brother Tim, have him at a greater stage of development. If he continues with his knock out performances he may well become Australia's version of 'Hands of Stone'. We've not seen him against another heavy puncher yet. Australian boxing fans have a lot to look forward to with the Tszyu's and Garside coming through.

I am a fan of Boxing and congratulate Jai Opetaia on winning the World Cruiser Weight title last weekend over Mairis Briedis. However, the fight should have been stopped. Opetaia had his jaw broken in round 2 and again in round 11. Apparently it was not obvious the jaw was broken after round 2. But his corner knew it was broken in round 11 and allowed him to proceed into the final round because he was ahead on points. Opetaia could not speak after the match and has had plates inserted in his jaw in two separate places. He cannot fight again for 6 months.

Imo his trainer, who knew of the break in round 11, should be fined and banned from the Sport. The independent doctor at the bout was not informed of the break to his jaw or he says he would have stopped it. There has to be a better way than leaving these decisions in the hands of the boxer and trainer who have a financial interest in the outcome of the bout. The sportsman's welfare should always be Number one.

Great win by Jai Opetaia. Brilliant in fact. I think you'll see his name mentioned earlier in this thread by someone with the foresight to recognise his potential. I saw the fight and it certainly should not have been stopped at the end of the 11th. It wasn't evident he had a broken jaw until that round. There was only one round to go by the time he got back to the corner and he was well in front. You don't pull the rug out on a guy who is about to win a world championship with one to go when he's fought through adversity for the previous 10.

I disagree Sleek. Fighters and trainers financial incentive should not outweigh the health of the boxer. He has plates fitted to his jaw. I will be interested to see what happens at his next bout. Officials will be watching him for the slightest sign of injury and will take action due to what happened in the last match.

He would have had plates fitted to his jaw if the fight was stopped at the end of the 11th b/c his jaw was broken in two places. By finishing the fight and claiming a world championship he will be collecting several hundred thousand for his next fight instead of several thousand. The risk to his jaw will be the same.

Nikita Tszyu (3-0) v Darkon Dryden (4-0) in Newcastle next Saturday 8/10/22. Dryden has ko'd his opponents within 3 rounds. Two Australians trying to stamp their place in this division.

Nikita Tszyu gives Dryden a boxing lesson. The bout is stopped at the end of the third round. Tszyu has the skills and fitness to dominate. Dryden relying on a punchers luck, but Tszyu does not stay still long enough to be hit and hurt by Dryden. Four from four for Nikita Tszyu. Tszyu's team will need to get some better ranked opponents and possibly go overseas for some greater exposure.

George Kambosos has a huge heart and punch but when he comes up against a quality boxer like Devin Haney who is very hard to hit, well... one is a boxer and World Title holder and the other is George Kambosos. Clearly outpointed in the match and I would not suggest he gives it away because against other opponents he will go well. But against the skill of Haney it was chalk and cheese.

As a Rugby League comparison is would be like Penrith FG vs Penrith NSW Cup. Yes both sides have talent but one is simply on another level.

Mark Hunt has stopped Sonny Bill Williams in the 4th round. This is what punchers luck means. SBW the better of the two but Hunt, at age 48, still has power in his right and he tagged SBW to the point where the Ref had to stop the contest.

I'd argue he got seriously hurt in that Huni fight. He appeared to be suffering concussion for at least a month after that fight.

Agree Gergreg that facing a Champion like Huni is going to hurt. Even the other ex-footballers can have 'punchers luck' though and at 41 I'm glad he's calling time on boxing.

He should have called it after that Huni fight. A few extra pay days I guess.

Huni broke his hands and ruined his career on that massive box head.

Very brave of Gallen. An absolute moronic fight for Huni at that stage of his now basically non-starter of a career. Missed the Olympics and ongoing hand problems.

Huni won his last fight earlier in November 2022 to retain his titles. He will need to go overseas to develop his ranking for the major titles. He currently has a 7-0 record. He is a boxer with skills but his record so far does not indicate he is a knock out specialist. He is only 23 and still learning. I am not suggesting he should challenge the likes of Fury or Usyk at this stage of his career.

Missing the experience and the platform the Olympics could have given him- after devoting years to trying to get there and then not being able to fight for a year afterward- yeah bad decision. Should have fought Gal afterward. Hasn't been able to finish anyone since. Still plenty of time though.

Yep, he went for a pay day and it cost him a shot at an Olympic medal and a broken hand. Having said that, there is no saying he would have won a medal at the Olympics. The Cuban heavyweight was very good. I think he needs to head overseas for opponents. He will have mandatory title defenses which he can do at home, but to climb the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO rankings he needs to fight others with higher rankings. An Anzac fight against Kiwi Joe Parker who is ranked 10 in the WBC would be a good test. A good start in the USA would be against someone like Charles Martin who is ranked 11 in the IBF.

Fury too good for Chisora after Ref stops the bout in Round 10. Fury superior all the way through.

Usyk was at the fight. A World Title unification between those two would be great to watch. Both at the height of their skill.

Tim Tszyu's fight with Jermel Charlo has been postponed after Charlo broke his left hand in training. Typically Charlo, 32, reckons he could beat Tszyu with one hand but the Boxing Commission won't allow it. Tim is now looking for another fight in the USA in February 2023.

Re: The Boxing Thread

Unfortunate. It was pretty clear by Charlo at the time choosing to schedule it 6 months down the track in January that he was hoping for something, anything to come along and get him out of this mandatory. Not because he should be particularly scared of Tszyu, who would be a solid underdog and didn't look great vs Gausha- stiff and very hittable, hardly moved his head in defence. But because he wants a bigger name, bigger draw, bigger money fight.

I'm sure the injury is legit but kicking it six months down the road again leaves Tszyu years without facing the opposition he really needs to. Tszyu has an interesting fight to pick as his "stay busy fight"- he's still got a lot to work on at this level so needs a good level opponent to keep developing. A tread water fight doesn't do much good for him, at this stage of his career imo. But if he loses, he loses the mandatory position and will have a really hard time getting it back, could be 2 years to work back there.

BnM the former champion Brian Castano who Charlo beat to unify the titles does not have a fight lined up and has not fought since May 22. He has only lost to Charlo. The Argentinian would be good fight for Tim if it is expected that the delay with Charlo will be 3-4 months. If the aim is to build his reputation against Americans then Charles Conwell who has an 18-0 record and who also does not currently have a fight lined up would be a tough assignment.

What I've read is Charlo to need surgery, and then in a cast for 2 months, so wants to reschedule for July- pushing it out as far as he possibly can again. Probably because he wants Tszyu to take a fight, lose it and go away.

The aim would be to stay active, gain experience vs good fighters and improve- I think it would be a REALLY bad idea at the stage of his career Tszyu is at to try and go in against Charlo without a fight for 15 months. I think Tszyu would benefit from more exposure vs talented fighters, he has a name but a limited resume/experience. And improve, if he fights like he did vs gausha he'll get his clock cleaned, he needs to get in there vs some good fighters and feel what he needs to do. He doesn't have a huge career or ring experience underneath him yet.

Castano would be a serious test and would be the best fighter Tszyu has faced, by some distance. I actually would be amazed if the tszyu camp wants that fight. I'd love to see it, but massive, massive risk.

Hadn't seen Conwell before but that looks a good fight to make. As you said, beat a rising star and steal some of his thunder. Conwell is at the level where he'd surely take the fight for the chance to suddenly jump to the top of the queue vs an Aussie not many Americans rate highly. If he can get this guy for February they should make it happen. That'd give Tszyu 4 months or so before the title fight.

Tim Tszyu will fight in Australia on March 12 against Tony Harrison in the WBO Super Welter weight division. Tony Harrison is the only boxer to defeat Charlo and did it in 2018 with a unanimous points decision. Good luck to Tim.

Tony Harrison has a significant height and reach advantage over Tim Tszyu. Harrison v Tszyu height 185cm v 175cm and reach 194cm v 179cm.
Tim will have to avoid the Harrison jab to get close enough to counter punch. He is though, similar to his father, in that he has good mobility and head movement. He will have to get in close and work harder than ever before to pressure the experienced Harrison.

Re: The Boxing Thread

I thought Tszyu looked stiff last outing vs Gausha, lacked his usual head movement and was getting tagged easily as a result. Maybe it was nerves - fine he can work on that. Or the first time he's faced an opponent with that level of speed and found his usual groove harder to find- a bit more worrying since he's been inactive since.

Harrison is a huge test for Tszyu and it's only the one belt, not 4 but Harrison is not quite at the Charlo level imo- so it's a nicer stepping stone up to the ultimate test. Where based on what he showed vs Gausha, I think Charlo would have handled that Tsyzu quite easily to be honest, KO. I hope he goes to another level vs Harrison and we can see what he can really do.

Re: The Boxing Thread

I think the fact Tim needed clean out surgery to both hands following the Gausha fight meant he was down on his normal movements and hitting power in that contest but still won over 12 rounds. He looked hesitant. The reports on Tim from the training camp in the US indicate he is training very well and is as sharp as he has ever been. I hope he does go to another level against Harrison because he will need to. The Harrison fight is 2 weeks short of 12 months since the Gausha fight. The reach advantage of Harrison means Tim's evasion skills will be tested.

Aussie Liam Wilson fights Mexican Emanuel Navarrete in Arizona for the super welter weight WBO title. Wilson (26) has an 11-1 record against Navarrete (28) record of 36-1 including 30 knock outs. Wilson is taller but Navarrete has a longer reach. I wish the Queenslander well.
