Re: The Tennis Thread
Really bad decision by tennis Australia.
They have been on a winner, 7 is a good fit this spells disaster.

I've just seen Serena Williams attire at the French Open and now I feel sick.
It's not right..it's unnecessary.

Surely this thread needs a bump? Poor misunderstood Serena, having to deal with more adversity than the Broncos.

Re: The Tennis Thread
Agree, that was a meltdown of epic proportion. Disgraceful behaviour, completely ruined it for the winner and glad she got a fine.
Imagine Kyrgios doing that, he’d be hung.

Re: The Tennis Thread
She was clearly being coached from the stand, her coach even acknowledged this.
It was a desperate cry from a woman being outplayed and outsmarted.
Congrats to Miss Osaka?
Not a great look Serena, much like the majority of your wardrobe...

Re: The Tennis Thread
I read an article saying how horrible it is that the umpire is a man and how that disadvantages Williams, and none of the top umpires are black women. I must have missed the article on Osaka's disadvantage on the umpire not speaking Japanese. Or about her being a man.-TW- wrote:Now apparently it's racist to call her out for it.. **** off
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Re: The Tennis Thread
Absolutely, this is what I think is completely lost in some of the reaction. It was a contest between two women with non white skin. I don't know what race or gender has to do with it? Sure the umpire was male and white but he was adjudicating a match where the contestants were the same gender and colour. He wasn't discriminating either player.

Re: The Tennis Thread
The argument isn’t that he was biased within that match. It’s that her reaction was treated differently from the way other white males are treated when they react like that.
Not that I subscribe to the argument. I haven’t seen anything substantive to show that is the case. Nor do I think a time when you have called an umpire a thief and a cheat for correctly applying the rules is a good time to play those cards. Seems like a significant overreach which sets back the cause of reducing sexism and racism.

Particularly when the reference material was John McEnroe. He forfeited a whole match due to his behavior. Which I think would've been completely fair penalty for questioning the integrity of the umpire. Got off lightly, in my opinion.gangrenous wrote:The argument isn’t that he was biased within that match. Re: The Tennis Thread
Most of the men who are volatile have their tantrum and stop as soon as they get a warning. Williams has history. She threatened to shove a tennis ball down a lineswoman's throat and received a 'pocket change' fine. Can you imagine if a man did that to a lineswoman? Somebody like Federer, Nadal or Djokovic. I use these examples because they are the 'standard' of the men's game just like Williams is the pinnacle of the women's game. The players that every rising athlete aspires to be. She is an extremely bad loser and should be called out for it not protected.gangrenous wrote:The argument isn’t that he was biased within that match. Poor Lleyton copping it at the moment. He
ju st wants some of these young guys to be better tennis players and role models for Australian kids.
As far as the actual tennis a few of these younger guys have played well. I'm not sure they have the talent or game to really challenge the best but it's good to see quite a few playing well.

Re: The Tennis Thread
It's a shame Kyrgios doesn't have the ticker of a de Minaur or, hell I'd settle for even a Philippoussis. He'd be in the top 10.
Re: The Tennis Thread
I watched Kyrgios the other night and I could have sworn he was drunk or something. Absolutely didn't give a ****. Behind the back or through the legs, meh ... who cares he says.zim wrote:It's a shame Kyrgios doesn't have the ticker of a de Minaur or, hell I'd settle for even a Philippoussis. Re: The Tennis Thread
Great to see Ash Barty come back from a set down to beat Sharapova. Barty has more fight and will to win in her little finger than Tomic has in his whole arrogant body. I loved her words of support for the WBBL Heat.
Re: The Tennis Thread
Federer upset by the young greek - great match, not much in it. People will say this might the end for Federer but I don't think he did too much wrong - was just outplayed on the night and that's tennis.
Re: The Tennis Thread
It's got to happen sooner or later, his almost 40. Such a great player to watch. Ultra competitive, polite and bloody good. Traits many of our young guys should be aspiring towards bit instead.....

Re: The Tennis Thread
People are always going to play the age card but Federer still played well - just in these close games it comes down to clutch points and he lost a few too many.
Still, has a resemblance to when Federer was around the same age of 20 and beat Pete Sampras as a passing of the baton moment.

Djokovic absolutely destroyed Nadal. I was expecting an epic final but it was a real fizzer.

Great semi between Thiem and Djoker too.
Re: The Tennis Thread
Started watching Ash Barty, but the grunting and groaning from the opponent is intensely annoying. I don't know why players do this. Can't watch. Probably jinx Barty if I watch anyway. Haven't watched any of her games til now.
