French fried by Graham masterclass

The Kangaroos have booked a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals following a Wade Graham-inspired 52-6 win over France at Canberra Stadium.

In his just his second Test in the green and gold jersey, the Sharks back-rower ran amok with four tries to make it two wins from as many matches for Australia who secured their spot on top of Pool A with one game remaining.

Australia 52 (Wade Graham 4, Cameron Munster 2, Josh Dugan, Tyson Frizell, Billy Slater, Valentine Holmes tries; Cameron Smith 6 goals) def. France 6 (Mark Kheirallah try; Remy Marginet goal) at Canberra Stadium. Half-time: 20-6. Crowd: 12,293

I've done a bit more research today on the crowd history for Tests between Australia and France.

It is only the fourth match between the countries in the past two decades, and it was the highest crowd of the four, easily surpassing the other three matches, played in France.

There was a Test played in July 1994, which attracted 27,318 to Parramatta Stadium. It was the only Test played against Australia on France's tour to Oceania.

In 1990, 12,384 people turned up in Parkes to see a World Cup match.

You have to go back to July 1981 to get more higher crowds... a strangely round 14,000 at Lang Park and 16,277 at the Sydney Football Stadium.

So last night's attendance was the third highest (line ball with Parkes in 1990) at an Australia V France match in the past 35 years.

By decade...

In the 2000s and 2010s, last night's crowd was the highest of the four matches played between Australia and France.
In the 1990s, two of five matches played had higher crowds (27,318 and 12,384).
In the 1980s, two of six matches had higher crowds (14,000 and 16,277)
In the 1970s, one of nine matches had a higher crowd (13,231 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1977). 1978 was the last time France has defeated Australia.

You have to go back to the 1960s to find regular large crowds at Australia V France matches. Half of the 16 Tests had 20,000 in attendance or more. The highest attendance was the 1968 World Cup final at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with 54,290 in attendance.

In the 1950s, eight of 16 Tests had 20,000 in attendance or more. The 1951 French tour to Australia attracted crowds of 60,160 and 67,009 to the Sydney Cricket Ground and 35,000 to the Brisbane Cricket Ground. The 1955 tour attacted crowds of 67,748 and 62,485 to the Sydney Cricket Ground and 45,745 to the Brisbane Cricket Ground. Extraordinary numbers. France won both of those series.

In the 1930s and 1940s, only four Tests were played, with just one attracting more than 20,000 in Marseilles.

So all round, and given the RLWC organisers were charging $72 for an inner bowl seat on the sideline, I reckon the crowd was pretty good last night.

The flags are out on the field at Christchurch, and now the teams walk out side by side. The teams are welcomed by a haka from the local Maori.

It is not a bad crowd, good in one stand, not so good in the other. Now the national anthems. These pre match ceremonies are beautifully presented. First Flower of Scotland... and wonderfully, the Scotland team and crowd continue the second verse unaccompanied. Now the New Zealand anthem.

Very good crowd in the stand at one end... so it looks like the RLWC organisers have priced this event high in the premium seats. Whereas for a game against a lower tier nation... you need to price realistically.

9th min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Kenny Bromwich, set up by a nice pass from Martin Taupau. It was off the back of a penalty to the Kiwis. Johnson converts.

13th min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Jason Nightingale, they pass wide to the left and Nightingale has the overlap. Put in motion by Shaun Johnson and Te Maire Martin. Taupau having a damaging game. Tapine with no runs and five tackles so far. Horrible conversion attempt from Johnson.

New Zealand 10-0

15th min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Joe Tapine! First try in a Kiwis jersey. The Kiwis are finding lots of breaks now and that was easy. Another poor conversion attempt from Johnson. No goal. But at the rate the gaps are opening and tackles are being missed, the Kiwis won't need to kick goals.

New Zealand 14-0

23rd min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Jason Nightingale, his second for the afternoon. Great pass from Tuivasa Sheck to set it up. Scotland are nowhere near the team that drew with New Zealand in the Four Nations last year. No conversion from Johnson from the sideline.

New Zealand 18-0

Joe Tapine statistics after 25 minutes. One try, one line break, two runs for 43 metres and five tackles.

New Zealand has had 61 per cent possession.

32nd min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Te Maire Martin, set up by a bust from Asofa Solomona. They're just too big and strong for this Scotland team. Johnson converts from in front.

Apart from the finals tickets all other World cup game tickets should have been General Admission and General Admission prices. Make it a festival feel. Apart from the match last night what else did you get for your admission GE?

I was half thinking of coming down to see Campo play for the final time on Canberra Stadium but for that price, nope.

You are expecting in most cases the locals to be keen to see anyone play but lets be honest the main players you want to see are the raiders ones and a few stars. Noone in the teams last night rocked my boat enough to bother watching TBH

Nothing other than the match, the Telopea School Band and bagpipes in the forecourt. Both very good incidentally.

You should check the prices for Fiji V Italy. They are pricing games involving Tier 1 countries high, but not the others.

EDIT

Category A is $45 for Italy V Fiji. GA is $20.

58th min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Peta Hiku, his second try, set up by Tuivasa Sheck. It follows Scotland failing to find touch from a penalty. That's 50. Johnson converts from out wide and that's 52.

61st min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Shaun Johnson, again this one is set up by Roger Tuivasa Sheck. The Scotland players are completely spent. This is an indictment of Super League for the lack of support for Scottish rugby league. There's a good article about it on net somewhere if you search it. Johnson converts.

65th min New Zealand are playing sevens at the moment. It breaks down at the end though. If the try had been scored after some of those offloads, it would have been incredible. Not sure the official crowd has come through, but it was mentioned as more than 12,000.
