2020 CRRL Cup

Post by greeneyed »

Fuifui Bradbrad wrote:Is there some tier system similar to CRRL > NSW Cup > NRL? If we decide to do our own side in the NSW Cup, we should start aligning with CRRL teams and create a proper tier system
The short answer is yes... the long answer is...

All the CRRL teams are “aligned” to the Raiders as it’s their local district. The CRRL/CDRL used to be based at the Queanbeyan Leagues Club... and it’s now based at Raiders HQ at Braddon. They’re on the Raiders email system, the Raiders media team cover Canberra Raiders Cup. The CRRL has a separate Committee and CEO but the operations are heavily intertwined with the Raiders and funding comes from the Raiders Group.

The ultimate controlling entity of the QLC, and therefore the Raiders Group and the Raiders, is the Queanbeyan Blues. The Raiders Group fund the Blues and send sponsorship funding to a number of clubs... eg Raiders Gungahlin to the Bulls, Raiders Belconnen to the Warriors, and the Mawson Club to the Rams. Some clubs are more clearly independent operations, eg the Roos have their own substantial leagues club. But the Raiders share out their own juniors who are not required on any given week or weeks to all the clubs. And lots of the Raiders juniors come through the CRRL clubs.

Monaro and Riverina junior reps teams are also aligned to the Raiders, with the Raiders investing in their development squads.

So it’s very similar to Sydney... with Ron Massey and Sydney Shield teams part of the NRL clubs’ districts and aligned to them.

If the Raiders had their own NSW Cup team, it would have to be funded by the Raiders Group of licensed clubs... but there’d be a pathway to that team from all the CRRL clubs.

27th min Great try to Mitch Souter disallowed, after the ball was spilled by the Rams. Referee seems to rule there was a forward pass after the Raiders had taken advantage.

53rd min TRY RAIDERS out on the right side to Esera. It follows an error from the Rams at their own end on the first tackle. Rupapera misses from way out wide. Esera causing some havoc at centre. He’s huge for that position.

Canberra Raiders Under 20’s return to form after surviving late Rams scare

The Canberra Raiders Under 20’s maintained their lead at the summit of the competition with a 28-22 victory over the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip Oval.

After suffering their first defeat of the season last week against the Gungahlin Bulls, the Raiders had to hold off a late surge from a 12-men Rams side as they held on for the win.

I would be interested in knowing people’s thoughts on some of younger players particularly those with the raps like Mooney, Esera, Clarkson and Trevillyan. Are they impressing? Is there anybody who seems a cut above and maybe first grade ready by 2021 or 2022?

I wouldn’t say 2021. The first three were playing Under 18s at the start of the year. They’d be doing very well to debut in 2022. I’d say they’re a couple of years away at least. Esera is the biggest, but he’s got maturing to do. I haven’t seen Trevilyan (broken wrist/arm) play yet... or if I have I didn’t notice him coming on... apparently he has only been on the field for two minutes.

That is to be expected, 2022 might be likely if they are very good talents. We also have remarkable depth in our forwards which makes it even more unlikely for next year or even 2022.

I am not from Canberra so just curious to gain some perspectives on some of those players. Anybody in our backline that has stood out as most of the plaudits on our juniors are forwards.

They might develop, but last year’s crop of Under 20’s outside backs are a level above IMO. HSS, Timoko and Valemei are all good prospects. Next year, Under 20’s will become Under 21s, so there’s time for others to emerge.

Mitch hoping Raiders will be his suitor

It’s 7:30 pm on a Wednesday night in West Belconnen and Raiders under 20s hooker/half Mitchel Souter is sucking in the big ones after an opposed session against the UC Stars. It’s familiar surroundings for Souter, a Canberra local, who came up through the Raiders junior representative system.

“I love this club and everything it stands for. Having grown up in Canberra, I have always dreamt to one day play for the mighty Canberra Raiders.”

NRL dream for Robertson brothers

Woden Valley Rams brothers Tom and Brayden Robertson came through the grades at Raiders - Tom playing for the under-20s side which made the grand final while Brayden was running around with the under-18s SG Ball team. They'd be happy to ditch the team they supported as boys, the Rabbitohs, if they could play with Canberra.

"We have dreamed about playing together since we started playing in 2007, we finally got to accomplish that dream in 2018," Brayden said.
