19th min Caleb Esera put on report, not clear why. Penalty to the Sharks on the goal line. It follows a nit picking penalty against the Raiders for an incorrect play the ball. The Raiders have had a couple of chances at the other end, but have lost the ball.

TRY SHARKS out wide to Kitione Kautoga, off the back of the penalty. No conversion.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup team suffered a 16-12 loss to the Canterbury Bulldogs on Sunday, after their home game was transferred to Belmore Sports Ground due to the wet weather last week in the nation's capital. The Bulldogs scored three tries in the first half and led 16-0 at the break. The Green Machine made a late come back, with tries to Krystal Blackwell and Holly Jane Christison - but it was too late.

Canberra remains in second place on the ladder - and now face another road trip - this time to Cessnock Sports Ground for a clash with the last placed Newcastle Knights. The Knights have yet to win a game in 2020, but lost narrowly to the Parramatta Eels after scoring a late try at Ringrose Park (8-4). The Raiders have a 3 and 2 record this season, and have a much better attacking and defensive record than the Knights. Canberra will go into the game as deserved favourites. Here's hoping they bring home the two competition points!

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews team has fallen to seventh place on the ladder, after Sunday's 40-28 loss to the Cronulla Sharks at Gungahlin Enclosed. The Sharks went to an early 8-0 lead, after the Sharks scored two tries in the space of three minutes. But with the wind behind them, the Raiders then turned on the attack. They piled on four tries and 22 points - with centre Samuel Gash, winger Jacob Haeata, five eighth Blake Metcalfe and second rower Kaden Williams all crossing. Unfortunately, Canberra conceded a try after the half time siren. Centre Talanoa Penitani scored out wide - and Siteni Taukamo converted, with the ball striking the upright before bouncing over.

The Sharks trailed by just eight points at break - and it was then all the Sharks in the second half. They hit 40 before Canberra scored a consolation try, to Nui Mariota, in the final minute of the game.

In Round 6, the Raiders face the long trip to Cessnock Sports Ground for a meeting with the fifth placed Newcastle Knights. Both teams have a 2 and 2 record so far this season, and are separated on the ladder only on points differential. The Knights had a 52-10 win over the St George Dragons at Mascot on Saturday, so they will come into the game with plenty of confidence. The Knights have won the last two encounters between the clubs - a 28-20 win in Round 8 at Seiffert Oval last year, and a 50-16 win in a 2017 Preliminary Final at Kogarah Jubilee Oval. Hopefully, the Green Machine can bounce back in this one.

Round 5 highlights: https://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2020/03/1 ... -cup-rd-5/ (6:25 min mark)

SG Ball

The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team has a bye in Round 6. They have moved up to fourth on the ladder, on points differential - but are on eight competition points, along with the Warriors and Roosters, and are just one competition point adrift of the ladder leading Knights.

The Raiders defeated the Sharks, 20-16, at Gungahlin Enclosed on Sunday afternoon. The Sharks had a stiff breeze at their backs in the first half and took a 12-4 lead to the break, scoring three tries. The Raiders' only try came in the 26th minute, when bench player Wilson Hamblin crashed over. The Green Machine did well to save another Sharks try in the corner after the half time siren had sounded.

The Sharks were first to score in the second half, with second rower Jordan Samrani crossing for his second four pointer in just the third minute. Canberra then slowly grafted its way back into the game. With 21 minutes remaining, winger Livai Kaloutolu scored out wide, reducing the deficit to six points. Canberra levelled with nine minutes remaining, after hooker Zane Thompson crossed. Inside the final five minutes, the Raiders were penalised for a third time while in possession, for failing to play the ball correctly. Their hopes for a win looked all over. However, with two minutes left on the clock Junior Tupou made a long break. While the play broke down, the Raiders were awarded the scrum feed - and Raiders centre Brown Kuresa stormed across for the match winner with just one minute left.

Junior Reps Round 6 Preview

After a disappointing loss at home last weekend against the Sharks, the Raiders Harold Matthews team is looking to minimise errors against the Knights at Cessnock this weekend, according to coach David Small.

“Last week, [the Sharks] didn’t win the game, we gave it to them,” Small said. “The boys know now just how costly it can be to be making those kinds of errors and that’s what we will be improving on. It’s not so much the error count, but where we’re giving them away.

I could see all NSWRL comps shut down after this weekend.

They don’t have the same broadcaster imperatives as the NRL.

Nine and Fox Sports expect to broadcast Canterbury Cup. Can't see that competition being closed, at least while the NRL continues, particularly as it involves large numbers of NRL top 30 players. As to other grades, it'd be a shame if they stopped the seasons. They could fairly easily just close the doors.

The Raiders have won the past two clashes between the clubs in this grade - by two points (16-14 in Round 7 at Leichhardt last year and 14-12 in Round 7 at Kirkham Park in 2018). Given both teams have a 2 and 3 record this season, it should be a close contest.

Grassroots footy, second-tier competitions and junior representative fixtures are expected to be suspended due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Officials at both the NSWRL and QRL are meeting on Tuesday to discuss contingency plans around their state-based and lower tier competitions, with the prospect of six to 10-week hiatuses raised. No official call has been made by either body, but the suspension of all bar top-level rugby league until at least May is being reluctantly planned for.

The NSWRL will make a final decision on Wednesday morning. Shortened seasons in both second-tier competitions, as well as junior representative leagues including Harold Matthews and SG Ball, remain an option for later in the year

NSWRL suspends all competitions over COVID-19

A special meeting of the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) Board has agreed to postpone all Community Rugby League until at least 1 May 2020, effective immediately, while all major NSWRL competitions have been suspended until 31 May in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Community Rugby League, which involves more than 100,000 grassroots players across NSW, from Under 6s to open age, was due to kick-off on 4 April, but will now be delayed until at least 1 May.

NSWRL’s 13 major competitions, most of which started last weekend, with the exception of junior representative competitions which kicked off in February, have been suspended until 31 May. The later date will allow teams to train and prepare earlier in May if Community Rugby League is cleared to resume.

2020 season cancelled for Canberra Raiders Junior Reps

The National Rugby League (NRL), along with New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL), Queensland Rugby League (QRL) and the Affiliated States, has announced the cancellation of a number of male and female competitions, tournaments and national representative programs.

The uncertain and unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 pandemic made the scheduling of these fixtures untenable in 2020.

NRL Head of Football – Participation, Pathways and Game Development Luke Ellis said the decision was unfortunate but necessary under the circumstances.

“I know this will be a disappointing outcome for those involved in these competitions right across Australia, but the health and safety of those involved with rugby league must always come first,” Mr Ellis said.

“It was essential for us to at least give the players, clubs and staff some certainty going forward so they can focus on themselves and their families during this uncertain time.”

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said: “It is devastating for everyone involved but the advice has changed dramatically since we suspended these competitions nine days ago.”

“We have an obligation to be part of the solution for this pandemic, both for the Rugby League community and also for the community more generally. This view was uppermost in the minds of the Board.”

QRL Managing Director Rob Moore said: “We understand the outcome is a heartbreaking one for the rugby league community, but it’s a call that simply had to be made given the current circumstances.”

“Rugby league is part of the fabric of Queensland, and as such, we have key responsibilities to the wider community as well.

The cancelled competitions include:

National: Harvey Norman Women’s National Championship; National Schoolboys Championships; all Combined Affiliated States representative football

Queensland Rugby League: Intrust Super Cup; BHP Premiership; Hastings Deering Colts; Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup

New South Wales Rugby League: Canterbury Cup NSW; Jersey Flegg Cup (Under 20s); UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 18s); Laurie Daley Cup (Under 18s); Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup (Under 18s women); UNE Harold Matthews Cup (Under 16s); Andrew Johns Cup (Under 16s); Women’s Country Championships and Men’s Under 23s Country Championships.

NSWRL board confirms there will be no premiers in Junior Representatives for 2020

The NSWRL cancelled nine competitions on 27 March. The Board has today confirmed that no premiers and no player of the series awards will be declared for any of those competitions for 2020. This applies to the following:

Recruiting from inside the coronavirus bubble
Peter Mulholland

I have been asked many times over the past three months how this pandemic will or has affected recruitment in the NRL. In the NRL bubble my biggest concern is for those players outside of the 21 or 22 each club will use regularly to compete in the premiership.

Each club carries a number of developing players as well as journeymen who will be unable play in a high level weekly competition like the Queensland and NSW Cup competitions. These developing players may be able to compete at training but nothing compares to the match hardened lessons they learn playing with and against experienced professionals on a weekly basis.

Season cancelled, but I understand age groups will advance by a year, next year, so as to not interrupt the players’ development. Doubt they’ll bring anyone into Under 20s, not certain but it’d make sense for them to start again in 2021.

Be good if they can get a shot. The Under 20s coach says eight players are in the bubble and the have injuries. In the normal course, some of these SG Ball players would have been promoted to Flegg mid season.
