Son, we live in a world that has forums, and those forums have to be guarded by Mods. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Nickman? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lucy, and you curse GE. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that GE’s moderation, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, keeps threads on track and under the appropriately sized, highlighted green headings.
You want moderation because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that forum -- you need me on that forum. We use words like "stay on topic," "use the appropriate forum," "please delete." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very moderation that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get a green handle and edit a post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think about moderation.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

So Tom Hanks is responsible for the importation of coronavirus to Australia. Wow! His movies have become worse and worse over time. How he ever won an acting award is beyond me. Should have never been allowed into the country!

Could this weekend be the only full round before the comp gets suspended? Media is going to go into a frenzy about this and the AFL next week.

Particularly after US comps have stopped.

Hardly any new cases and most are reported as beign recovered. Italy is set to go past them for active cases.

We're going to keep our plans in a folder and try and run it back next year and do the same trip.
Not sure what we'll pivot too now, probably WA or Tassy combined with some time down the coast for a holiday this year.

Going to contact Japan Rail and try to get a refund, if i can get a refund of that, we'll likely only be out $1000 for the trip, which isnt bad. If not, we'll eat **** on about 4k

The Italian experience is proving worrying. One factor is a higher proportion of elderly than in China. Children and young adults are generally fine, asymptomatic even. Older adults are going down hard, and the Italian healthcare system is not coping.

Pandemic means we are all likely to get it. Limiting travel and public gatherings will hopefully mean that we don't all get it at once, and our healthcare system becomes overwhelmed. Next thing to look for is cancellation of all elective surgery, so that poatponable procedures aren't consuming much needed beds.

Most people will be fine and shouldn't be worrried. I'm not worried for myself, but am worried for my parents and have asked them to cancel their trip to the Gold Coast next week.

Apart from my parents, my main concerns are potentially not getting back into the country (am overseas for another week), and myself and/or my colleagues having multiple stints on the side lines for two weeks with possible exposures, which will impact on our ability to deliver care, increase our workload, hours and oncall when at work exhausting us, and also coming at financial cost from loss of income.

Which would suggest the more effective, efficient, possible and least damaging scenario is to try and quarantine/protect/self isolate elderly and in danger people instead of shutting down whole countries...
