AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup team suffered a 16-6 loss to the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday. The Sharks were first to score through prop Skye Brennan in the 12th minute. But the Green Machine hit back five minutes later, with a try to centre Roxy Horne. That tied the game at six apiece, but that was as close as the Raiders would get. A try to Sharks benchie Cali Clark delivered a 10-6 lead to the home team - and the Raiders were then held scoreless in the second half.

The Raiders have won just one game this season, and sit in 11th place on the ladder, just ahead of the winless Rabbitohs. Their opponents this week, the 10th placed Bears, have also had a troubled season. They were beaten, 22-0, by the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy at Kirkham Oval at Camden on Sunday. These two teams have not previously met in this grade.

Team news: Alanna Dummett shifts from five eighth to centre, to partner Tikirah-ann Douglas. Jaxan Blackhall takes over the No. 6 jersey. Chloe Doon and Beyonce Marela are the new starting props. Roxy Horne and Donelle O'Donnell take over in the second row, while Kayla Fleming has been named at lock.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced an exhilarating second half comeback in Harold Matthews on Saturday, defeating Cronulla, 18-10, at Shark Park. The Raiders trailed 10-0 at half time, but they scored an unanswered 18 points in the second stanza. The Sharks were first on the board, with winger Tanna Featherstone taking advantage of a big overlap in the third minute - and crossing in the corner. In the 17th minute, the Raiders put up a bomb to the corner, but the chasers failed to shut down Sharks fullback Chevy Stewart. He ran almost 90 metres to score under the posts. Just before half time, Raiders winger Sam Gash made a great break and appeared to score out wide. However, he was denied, with officials ruling he'd not grounded the ball. Canberra probably deserved to be closer at the break.

After the break it was all the Raiders, but it wasn't just their attack that impressed. Their defence repeatedly frustrated the Sharks. Canberra centre Siamani Leuluai scored in the 40th minute, after the Sharks were penalised for obstructing the Raiders' kick chasers. Ten minutes later, dummy half Ethan Alaia fooled everyone. The Raiders' runners were on his right, and the defence fell for the dummy. Alaia went left into a huge hole. That try gave the Raiders a 12-10 lead. In the 55th minute, benchie Noah Marcantonio sealed the result with his own four pointer. The win puts Canberra right in contention for a finals place.

“I’m really proud, we were a bit busted out there,” Canberra coach Peter Marrapodi told The Daily Telegraph.

“They had seven more sets than us in the first half and we were going into the wind so we were trying to solve things on our own rather than sticking to our structures. When we got an even share of possession there we looked really good and we were able to play a bit of footy.”

In Round 8, the sixth placed Raiders meet the North Sydney Bears. The Bears are coming off a 24-14 loss to the Sydney Roosters at Kirkham Oval, Camden on Sunday. It was four tries to three in favour of the Roosters, with goal kicking costing North Sydney. The defeat has left the Bears in 11th place on the ladder, with just one win to their name. They have not won since Round 1, when they defeated the Newcastle Knights, 22-10, at Kurri Kurri.

The Raiders have won three of the five recent matches played against the Bears in this grade. But the Bears have won the last two encounters, beating the Raiders, 28-16, in Round 4 last year.

Team news: Noah Marcantonio takes over the No. 7 jersey, with Jonah Anderson dropping back to the reserves list. Ethan Alaia will start at hooker, with Xavier Ccciotti moving to the interchange bench. Prop Mothias Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi is out, after injuring a knee last week. He's replaced by Elvis Nauer-Wood.

14. Josh Ruxton 15. Samuel Squire 16. Christian Loleni 17. Riley Price

18. Cooper Maytom 19. Flynn Sharman 20. Bostyn Ligaliga

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a disappointing, 40-6, loss to Cronulla at a wet Shark Park on Saturday. The Raiders were disrupted by late team changes, with half Blake Metcalfe missing and fullback Jack Sandford promoted to Jersey Flegg. The Sharks led 18-0 at half time. Half Chaz Jarvis scored twice, while centre Benjamin Lavender also crossed. The procession in the second half was interrupted only by a try to Canberra winger Regan Carr in the corner in the 55th minute. The Sharks scored seven tries. The loss means the Raiders have dropped to ninth place on the ladder.

In Round 8, Canberra will meet the 14th placed North Sydney Bears. The Bears have yet to win a game this season, and are coming off a 30-0 loss to the Roosters on Sunday at Camden. This is a match that the Raiders must win if they're to challenge for a finals place. The Raiders have won all four of the recent contests between these two teams. In Round 4 2021, the Raiders scored 12 tries in a 56-12 victory, with Clay Webb and Deakin Bright scoring hat tricks. Michael Asomua and Josh Billing got doubles.

Team news: For the Raiders, Jack Sandford returns at fullback, with Corey Lewis shifting to five eighth and Calab Edwards taking over at halfback. Eneseli Kamuta has been promoted to Jersey Flegg, with Jett Liu filling the vacant starting prop slot. Former Eels junior Kylan Mafoa has been named at lock. Joseph Roddy comes in on the bench.

The Raiders Round 8 junior representative matches have been shifted to Raiders Belconnen on Sunday, due to the wet weather and ground conditions in Sydney. So we have unexpected home games. Same kick off times, as previously announced. Venue and date changing.

The NSWRL and Raiders have yet to announce the change… but the Bears have done so.
