Good to see lots of the NRL squad here, Caleb Esera to see his brother’s debut, along with Trey Mooney, Harry Rushton, Clay Webb and others.

18th min TRY SEA EAGLES The result of a kick through from their halfback. Second rower Samuela
Fainu is the scorer. They’ve had a lot of chances and finally they convert one. Taylor Bunting converts.

32nd min TRY RAIDERS to Nui Mariota. He just burrows across. He’s really built up, and looks lots fitter since last year. Blake Metcalfe converts.

Raiders 12-6

HALF TIME

The Raiders have done well to be in front at half time. The Sea Eagles have plenty of attacking strike, but it’s not quite coming off. Canberra has had pretty good defence so far… reminiscent of 2021.

41st min TRY SEA EAGLES to centre Josh Feledy out wide. He was nearly held up, but the point of the ball eventually touched the grass. Tylor Bunting misses the goal from the sideline. The Raiders have stopped on almost certain try already, in the first minute of the second half. Great one on one tackle Sandford.

2 to go TRY SEA EAGLES in the corner to Luke Tucker. Cruel end for the Green Machine. It’s been a very good performance. A win would have been deserved. This is a match that easily could have gone the other way. The referee missed two clear knock ons from Manly in the final stages… but those are the breaks. No conversion.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders inflict first Harold Matthews Cup loss on Sea Eagles in two years

Canberra Raiders have handed the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles their first Harold Matthews Cup loss in two years after powering their way to a 32-6 win at Belconnen Oval.

The premiers went through the 2021 season undefeated and had not tasted defeat in a Harold Matthews Cup game since March 2020 but were guilty of making too many errors against the Green Machine. Raiders forward Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Koui finished with a hat-trick.

Just watching the replay of SG Ball. The quality of vision was very poor. Bar TV Sports much better. They couldn’t manage to find the Raiders’ latest logo for the graphics. Two years later. The commentator also seemed to think Prinston Esera’s surname is Prinston.

The number of forward passes missed by the referee from Manly was terrible. Edwards and Metcalfe impressed. Metcalfe a lot more solid looking these days, though he’s still pretty slight. Sandford good in defence and safe under the high ball, but not enough in attack. One outstanding try saver from Sandford early in the second half. Nui Mariota is going to be very good. Esera didn’t get much ball, was hoping to see more from him. Overall I felt sorry for the team, they put in a great effort. Some very unlucky calls for the Raiders in the final minutes.

Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews coach Peter Marrapodi pleased with intensity of his team in Sea Eagles victory

Raiders Harold Matthews coach Peter Marrapodi was pleased with the team’s effort and intensity in their season opening, 32-6, victory over the Sea Eagles on Saturday.

“We’ve spoken a lot about it being junior football but this is a transition period where we become adult footballers. To be able to stick at a task and do it for the whole game, right down to the last whistle they didn’t stop defensively and that’s a really proud thing for a coach to see.”

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders lost to the Illawarra Steelers in Round 1, 36-22, but the match was closer than the final score indicated. The Raiders were first to score through centre Georgia Willey in the 5th minute - and took a 10-4 lead at the 15 minute mark, after second rower Maata Alai Lokeni crossed. A second try to Steelers centre Jordyn Preston in the 20th minute produced the 14-10 half time scoreline - in favour of the Steelers. The match continued to see-saw in the second half, with a double to Raiders centre Roxy Horne giving the home team a 22-18 lead after 45 minutes. But a hat trick to hooker and captain Salma Nour in the final stages produced victory for the Illawarra outfit.

Canberra will host the St George Dragons in Round 2 at Kippax. The Dragons were first start winners, defeating the Cronulla Sharks 26-10 last week. Thanks to points difference, St George sit on top of the ladder, but it is obviously very early days. The Raiders beat the Dragons in last year's clash, 26-24, at Mascot Oval in Sydney. The teams have only met twice previously, with one win apiece.

Team changes: The Raiders are unchanged from last week's starting line up.

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Canberra Raiders had not won in almost two years heading into last week's clash with the Manly Sea Eagles. The Sea Eagles - the 2021 premiers - had not lost in two years. However, the young Raiders team were simply terrific in defeating Manly, 32-6. Canberra is a team that has drawn heavily from players in the Canberra-Monaro and Riverina districts - and it seems like the club's expanded development work in the region is starting to pay off.

Raiders second rower Noah Martin was the first to score, in just the second minute. Very quickly, we knew Elvis was in the house - with late inclusion at prop, Elvis Nauer-Wood crashing over. The Sea Eagles team were physically a lot bigger than the Raiders, and they often looked dangerous in attack. But errors proved costly for the visitors. Their only try of the game - to Tua Patea - came just before half time, after a string of penalties and restarts in the Raiders' red zone.

The Raiders led 16-6 at half time, and went right on with it in the second half. Raiders prop Mathis Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi - who hails from Western Australia and has a mullet that Josh Papalii would feel challenged by - ended with a hat trick. Noah Martin finished with a double. While the forwards were doing the scoring, the Raiders' nippy, smaller backs made plenty of exciting inroads. Centre Siamani Leuluai, winger Jack Clutterbuck and half Brayden O'Reilly produced some good breaks in the second half, in particular.

This week's opponents, the St George Dragons, will play their first game of the season - after a Round 1 bye. Thanks to points for and against, the Raiders sit in first place on the competition ladder. The Dragons won the last encounter between the two sides, running out 26-0 victors in Round 7 2021 at Mascot. The two teams have gone head to head five times, with the Dragons winning three matches. The Dragons finished in 13th place last year.

Team changes: The Raiders are unchanged from the team that took the field last week against the Sea Eagles.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team lost their opening clash of 2022, but only just. The Raiders are defending premiers in this grade, but a host of stars from the 2021 team have graduated to the NRL and Jersey Flegg squads. Think names like Xavier Savage, Trey Mooney, Caleb Esera and Michael Asomua. The Manly Sea Eagles team has been much hyped, with standouts from last year's Harold Matthews team moving up a grade. Five eighth Latu Fainu has received lots of attention in the Sydney press, while Bob Fulton's grandson Koby was on the bench.

However, the Raiders did themselves proud. Their defence was fairly strong, and it was only a last gasp try from Manly winger Luke Tucker that secured the 20-18 victory for the visitors. Kiwi recruit Stan Iongi got his first try in green in the 15th minute, diving across the line from dummy half. Manly second rower Samuela Fainu struck back in the 23rd minute, levelling the scores at 6-6. A try to bustling prop forward, Nui Mariota just before half time gave the Raiders a 12-6 lead at the break. Mariota was looking very fit in his return to the Raiders' ranks.

Manly centre Josh Feledy was dangerous all game. And early in the second half, the Sea Eagles found themselves just two points adrift, after Feledy somehow got the ball down in the corner. In the 48th minute, we saw the Raiders' try of the match, with second rower Thomas Casey making a break from deep inside Canberra territory. Five eighth Calab Edwards, backing up on the inside, scored under the posts. The Raiders led 18-10 at the 50 minute mark, but the Sea Eagles quickly produced their own stunning try. Fullback Charlie Thompson created a gap out of nothing, through his stepping and swerving - setting up Feledy for his second four pointer.

The Raiders had their chances to seal the game in the final stages, but the Sea Eagles played some helter-skelter football and, in the end, Canberra couldn't hold on. Halfback Blake Metcalfe has returned to the Raiders with some extra size and he looked good, as did his halves partner Calab Edwards. Iongi was promising, while Mariota and Mitch Prest were strong in the forwards. Caleb Esera's brother, Prinston, made his debut in green at centre. He's big and the Raiders will need to look at sending more ball his way. He didn't get a lot of opportunity. Fullback Jack Sandford, who has been training with the top squad, produced one stunning try saver.

The Raiders meet the Dragons on Saturday. St George has no 2022 form on the board due to their Round 1 bye. Canberra was a big, 56-6, winner in last year's clash - when the Raiders were hitting top form on their charge to the finals. The two teams have recently met four times, with both recording two wins. The Dragons finished in 14th place on the ladder in 2021.

Team changes: For the Raiders, Kane Rushton shifts to the wing, with Corey Lewis moving into the centres. Clay Sing starts in the second row.

Manly Sea Eagles Harold Matthews junior investigated

A Manly Sea Eagles Under-17s player is under investigation amid claims that he jumped the fence and bashed a young male Canberra supporter at Raiders Belconnen on Saturday.

It’s claimed in a report Canberra has lodged with the NSWRL that two other Manly Harold Matthews Cup players had to be physically restrained by teammates from joining in, while the victim and his girlfriend were later allegedly threatened by Manly players when leaving the ground. It’s claimed the player had taken exception to what was described as loud jeers from a group of girls and one male who were sitting behind the Manly bench.

EDIT

If you cant handle heckling from a bunch of school girls ( remembering at no point are they saying it was racial - and even then there are much better ways to deal with it) and allegedly bash the guy up so bad he needed medical help EDIT

‘Wannabe gangsters’: NRL club boss wants thugs stamped out

Fed-up Canberra Raiders chief Don Furner has hit out at some Sydney NRL clubs for allowing “wannabe gangsters” to run wild at junior representative football.

“These are young kids or wannabe gangsters who turn up to footy games,” he said. “But it is not rugby league. It is not our culture. And the sad thing is a couple of clubs should have stamped this out years ago and they have let it go. In their quest to win an under 16s or an under 17s grand final they have let this behavior go and it is really disappointing.

I actually think its long over due for the nrl to care/ take control of junior footy.
Clubs have to be responsible for their junior players , i question the need for mangers for players under 18

I also think clubs should have a set of guidelines they must follow, at a minimum clubs should have to
- ensure junior players are getting an education and working towards qualifications for a back up career

- be provided with weekly educational training around the game in terms of the values and behaviours expected of them

- provide the players with support around mental health and managing the expectations of themselves and others

- money management

I think these kind of things at a junior club level would make a huge difference if they get to first grade

Especially in the younger years it should not be all about winning

The NSWRL’s investigation into allegations a young Canberra fan was assaulted by a Manly Harold Matthews Cup player after the game on Saturday is said to have found no conclusive proof that the spectator was punched. The NSWRL investigation will conclude that there was “an unpleasant interaction”, and as a result the players involved will be punished.

“What is clear is there were a number of breaches of our code of conduct,” NSWRL chief executive David Trodden said.

There was an accusation of assault. Doesn't mean any punches were thrown. Could have been all push and shove like a typical NRL "fight". Even the bunker with multiple TV angles stuggle to determine if a punch was thrown in those.

NSWRL hands out punishment for Manly's ugly Belconnen incident

The NSW Rugby League has suspended a coach, three players and a spectator for the incident involving Manly junior players and spectators at Kippax on Saturday.

Code of Conduct breaches issued for Junior Reps incidents

The NSWRL has today issued Code of Conduct breach notices to five players and officials and spectators face season bans following two separate incidents at junior football matches in Canberra and Penrith last weekend.

Following an investigation by the NSW Rugby League, the proposed penalties (upon conviction) include a 20-month suspension of an assistant coach, suspension until the end of the year for a female spectator and the suspension of three Harold Matthews players for varying weeks; while a group of spectators is being dealt with by NSW Police.

The strong action follows an incident involving players and spectators after a Harold Matthews Cup match between the Canberra Raiders and Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Belconnen Oval, Canberra, on Saturday (5 February); and a second crowd incident at the completion of a Junior Representatives match at Panthers Stadium, Penrith, on Saturday.

NSW Rugby League Chief Executive David Trodden said he was appalled by the behaviour of players and spectators and has instigated a review of all NSWRL grounds to ensure adequate security arrangements are in place.

“We have zero tolerance for behaviour that threatens the safety of participants, officials and spectators and incidents like these are contrary to the standards of any community sport,” Trodden said.

“We have a duty to eradicate this sort of behaviour from our game so that those who play and/or attend community sport can enjoy it and do so without any concerns or fears.

“Some of the recent crowd behaviour is criminal behaviour and if people behave that way, they should expect to be dealt with by the Police in accordance with the criminal law rather than by our Code of Conduct committee.

“In addition we will review all of our grounds to ensure that ground set-up minimises possible interaction between players and spectators, as well as ensuring that appropriate security arrangements are in place.”

Trodden said the Code of Conduct breaches issued today mean that, if convicted of the charges, those charged cannot act in an official role for any Rugby League activities until their suspension expires.

In addition, the spectator charged (Saulima) is also prohibited from attending any NSWRL games until the end of the suspension. The recipients of breach notices have until 5pm 15 February 2022 to respond to the notices. The charges and proposed suspensions are as follows:

- Jay Younis (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Harold Matthews Cup assistant coach) suspended for 20 months from 9 February 2022;

- (Ms) Lipe Saulima (spectator) suspended until 31 December 2022;

- varying sentences for three Harold Matthews Cup players (Under 17s) including: one player suspended to 31 May 2022 (which includes the full Junior Representatives season and Country v City representative opportunities); a second player suspended for four matches; and a third player receiving a two match suspended sentence.

In relation to the Penrith incident, the Penrith Panthers have provided relevant information to the NSW Police for investigation.

The alleged participants are not registered with NSWRL, but the Panthers have identified them and will advise the NSWRL tomorrow on details of how they propose to deal with the matter.
