7 to go Great run Mitch Prest. There’s an all in… penalty already awarded to Canberra. There should be some send offs here. Jack Sandford, as captain, warned. Dragons No. 2 binned again.

Dragons player on report, high shot. A try went begging out wide. Absolutely went begging.

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Canberra Raiders had a bit of a reality check, when they met the St George Dragons at home on Saturday. The visitors led 16-0 at half time. The Dragons took all their chances, while the Raiders failed to convert their own opportunities. St George extended their lead to 22 points, after just one minute of the second half. Two tries in the space of four minutes - to Canberra winger Jack Clutterbuck and second rower Noah Martin - put the Raiders back into the game at the 40 minute mark. But the Dragons hit straight back. Benchie Jacob Chmaisse and winger Malik Amine had both scored in the first half. Both completed doubles in the space of five minutes. After Amine scored in the 48th minute, the Dragons led 32-12, and it was game over. Raiders winger Samuel Gash produced a stunning length of the field, intercept try, with three minutes remaining. But by then it was all too late.
The Raiders face the Penrith Panthers in Round 3 at Kippax. The Panthers are traditionally a very strong team and finished third on the ladder in 2021. However, they are coming off a 20-6 loss to the Cronulla Sharks - a match in which they conceded four tries. They had a narrow two point win over the Central Coast Roosters in Round 1. The Panthers have won four of the past five meetings between the clubs. They took out the last contest, 22-20, in Round 6, 2019, at St Marys Leagues. That provides little guide, but based on results so far this year, it should be a great contest.
Team changes: Halves Sam Chapman and Brayden O'Reilly have switched positions, while Jayden Wolfe will start in place of Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi. Xavier Cacciotti will start at hooker. Noah Killeen comes into the second row, replacing Jed Reardon. Kyle McDermott and Jayden Svager have been added to the bench.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team produced an exciting 22-20 win over the St George Dragons on Saturday. Tries to Thomas Carey and a bullocking Nui Mariota gave the Raiders a 10-0 lead after just six minutes. Centre Prinston Esera - the brother of another up and coming Raiders star, Caleb - scored his first try in green in the 15th minute, extending the home side's lead to 16-0. When Dragons winger Godfrey Ilavalu was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, with 14 minutes to the break, Canberra was in complete control. But somehow, the Raiders seemed to go off the boil. Dragons winger Terence Patolo crossed in the corner in the 26th minute. With two minutes to the break, the visitors drew within six points, after St George benchie, Tyree Bowman burrowed his way over the line.
The Dragons received a string of penalties in the early stages of the second half. They eventually capitalised in the 45th minute, with Bowman crossing for his second try. The Raiders led by just two, but three minutes later, a wonderful try to five eighth Calab Edwards gave the home team a 22-14 lead. It was set up by a great run from Matthew Wheatley into the middle of the field. In the 52nd minute, the Dragons were in again, with some hard running from second rower Nicholas Tsougranis paying off.
That made it 22-20 and it set up a tense final quarter hour. It featured some argy-bargy with seven minutes remaining. Dragons winger, Godfrey Ilavalu was again sent to the sin bin as a result. The Raiders nearly scored three times in the final stages - but just couldn't get the four points. On one occasion, they were over, but were penalised for obstruction. It was only when Raiders' lock, Mitch Prest drew a penalty close to full time that the result was sealed. Prest was clearly man of the match.
In Round 3, the Raiders host the first placed Penrith Panthers. They have had two big wins in the opening rounds against the Victoria Thunderbolts (46-0) and Cronulla Sharks (36-16). In the past five games between these teams, the Panthers have won three times. The last clash was won by the Raiders, 30-28, at St Marys Leagues. But that was back in 2019.
Team changes: Matthew Wheatley retains a spot on the wing. Kaden Williams replaces Clay Sing in the second row, while Jack Anderson replaces Brock Sing on the bench.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders are one of four teams still winless after the opening two rounds of the 2022 Tarsha Gale Cup. Last Saturday, they lost to the St George Dragons, 32-20, at West Belconnen. The Dragons were almost completely dominant in the first half, going to the break with a 22-4 lead. Winger April Downey produced the only first half try for Canberra. However, the home team fought back in the second half. Centre Georgia Willey scored a double, while fullback Alanna Dummett also crossed. Dragons five eighth Luisa Yaranamua got a hat trick - and her two second half tries snuffed out any signs of a Raiders comeback.
In Round 3, the Raiders host the first placed Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy. The Roosters finished third on the ladder in 2021 and made the Grand Final - but lost to the Dragons, 30-4. They have started this year with back to back wins, beating the Parramatta Eels (22-10) and South Sydney Rabbitohs (30-0). So it will be a tough game for the Green Machine on Saturday. The two teams have played twice previously, with the Roosters winning twice. The Raiders won in Round 4, 2020 (18-10) at Henson Park, but lost last year (26-12) in Round 9 at Mascot.
Team changes: The only change for the Raiders is the inclusion of Felicity Bell on the bench, with Hunter Ings dropping to fresh reserve.

Canberra Raiders SG Ball coach Ash Barnes happy to get two points
After a close loss to the Manly Sea Eagles last week, Raiders SG Ball coach Ash Barnes says he was happy the side was able to get the two points this week against the Dragons.
“It was pretty nerve-wracking, a similar situation to round one where it was a really close game. Fortunately we ended up on the right end of the scoreboard this week,” Barnes said. “We wanted to have a strong start and lots of things went to plan around how we wanted to play and the intensity in which the guys started with was fantastic.Unfortunately a few little things didn’t go our way and we weren’t able to maintain that level towards the back end of the first half.

I am not sure the issues are stemming too often from the players.cat wrote: ↑February 8, 2022, 10:42 pm I actually think its long over due for the nrl to care/ take control of junior footy.
Clubs have to be responsible for their junior players , i question the need for mangers for players under 18
I also think clubs should have a set of guidelines they must follow, at a minimum clubs should have to
- ensure junior players are getting an education and working towards qualifications for a back up career
- be provided with weekly educational training around the game in terms of the values and behaviours expected of them
- provide the players with support around mental health and managing the expectations of themselves and others
- money management
I think these kind of things at a junior club level would make a huge difference if they get to first grade
Especially in the younger years it should not be all about winning
Suggesting it is not all about winning is just silly. These are young men who are attempting to embark on a professional career which is potentially life changing. Of course it is very serious but again that is not where these altercations stem from.

But winning is the reason the clubs have turned a blind eye to the gang elementBay53 wrote: ↑February 14, 2022, 7:28 pmI am not sure the issues are stemming too often from the players.cat wrote: ↑February 8, 2022, 10:42 pm I actually think its long over due for the nrl to care/ take control of junior footy.

These players also need to be supported to have a plan b because lets face it maximum 20% of the junior players actually make it to a career in first grade
Clubs have had players take their own lives because of the pressures to make it
I have seen first hand players losing it because of a simple injury they see is taking their chance away
So no its not "silly" to say it should not be all about winning

I think winning and the gang element is a bit of a long stretch. The reality is rugby league brings people together from a variety of backgrounds many of them not from upper socio economic areas.cat wrote: ↑February 14, 2022, 7:40 pmBut winning is the reason the clubs have turned a blind eye to the gang elementBay53 wrote: ↑February 14, 2022, 7:28 pmI am not sure the issues are stemming too often from the players.cat wrote: ↑February 8, 2022, 10:42 pm I actually think its long over due for the nrl to care/ take control of junior footy.

These junior games the crowd is very close to the players, referees and other spectators. We also see many of those involved from Middle Eastern and Polynesian backgrounds, as well as Anglo Saxon and that also create a lack of understanding and tension that can boil over.
The comment about player welfare is an important one, but not related to the crowd behaviour.

Upper socio-economic areas have gangs too........
My idea of guidelines isnt all about crowd behaviour, its an overall concept to make the junior teams safer and more productive for the players, as I said it should not be all about winning

Raiders SG Ball coach Ash Barnes looking forward to Panthers challenge
Raiders SG Ball coach, Ash Barnes says the side is looking forward to the challenge posed by the Penrith Panthers on Saturday.
“Last year in SG Ball they didn’t make the finals but their Harold Matts side was quite strong and they’ve started this year with two good wins against the Sharks and Victoria. They are one that you are always wary of in the junior grades, Panthers are always really strong.

10th min Huge 40/20 for the Panthers. They attack 10 metres out. Now a penalty for a leg pull for Penrith. And now another for a ruck infringement.

15th min TRY RAIDERS to centre Siamani Leuluai. It’s off the back of a penalty and they strike first! He just burrows through the line and gets it down. Converted Samuel Gash.

19th min TRY RAIDERS to Siamani Leuluai. He gets a double, quick time. Great overhead pass from Noah Killeen to set it up. The Raiders have weathered the early storm and have scored on both their opportunities. Gash converts from out wide.
