Tuggeranong Bushrangers sign Cooma man Jason Kelly as coach

He cut his rugby league teeth rubbing shoulders with the likes of Mark Carroll and Wayne Pearce, and now Cooma man Jason Kelly hopes to bring everything he's learned during a lifetime in the sport to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

Kelly has signed on as head coach of the Bushrangers next season, replacing Jarrad Teka who has returned to New Zealand for family reasons.

Canberra region rugby league participation numbers surge to record high

The Canberra region has seen a surge in participation levels in rugby league and now sits fourth overall in NSW and the ACT. With 5,798 players, Canberra is ahead of the traditional rugby league stronghold areas like Parramatta, Canterbury and Illawarra. The Central Coast is only slightly ahead on 5,989, with Penrith and Newcastle the only other regions ahead of Canberra.

“The region has shown growth across all age groups and especially pleasing is the growth in boys rugby league. Whilst we are very pleased to be advancing the game in female participation, the boys continue to play the game in increasing numbers,” CRRL general manager Mark Vergano said.

Canberra Raiders' success driving participation surge

The Vikings clans are on the march with participation numbers in Canberra and surrounding areas maintaining an upwards trajectory over the past four years. Mark Vergano, general manager of the Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL), believes the reasons behind the growth include the success of the NRL Canberra Raiders team plus a determination by individual clubs to be a force in their communities.

“We’re obviously closely aligned with the Raiders in the community, so there’s a bit of a halo effect around them from the 2019 grand final and the preliminary final in 2020,” Vergano said.

Canberra leapfrogs Parramatta as NSW rugby league participation figures revealed

The Canberra region has leapfrogged powerhouse Parramatta as the fourth most popular rugby league region in NSW/ACT. The imminent return of Canberra junior Nick Cotric to the Raiders will also likely boost interest, alongside the likes of locals Jarrod Croker, Sam Williams and Harley Smith-Shields.

"A guy like Harley especially, he's come through and played at Gungahlin Bulls in first grade, his brother's been there, they're well known in the district. He's very identifiable, a lot of kids can relate to him. If Nick comes back, he featured there before," CRRL CEO Mark Vergano said.

Half century of sport for veteran administrator Mark Vergano OAM

The boss of the Canberra Region Rugby League Mark Vergano has been awarded a medal of the Order of Australia for service to sport as an administrator. This year brings up a half century of involvement in sport for Vergano, since he began playing cricket as a 10-year-old. But his toughest challenge may yet be before him as he helps Canberra rugby league plot a safe path through the Covid pandemic.

"We're a contact sport in what started out as a pandemic that was basically non-contact," Vergano said.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 1 Preview

Image

The battle for the 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup kicks off this Saturday. The Queanbeyan Blues are the reigning premiers, with both of the past two seasons abandoned due to the pandemic. In 2020, the Canberra Raiders Under 20s took out a scaled back competition - the CRRL Cup. And in 2021, the season was cancelled after Round 15 - just three rounds short of the finals.

When the 2021 premiership was halted, the Gungahlin Bulls and Queanbeyan Blues were way out in front of the pack. The Bulls were one competition point ahead of the Blues - and the two teams were about to face each other in Round 16. The Bulls had lost just once, the Blues twice. The match would have likely decided the minor premiership - and promised to be a foretaste of the Grand Final. But the match never happened. The CRRL later decided to award the minor premiership to Gungahlin.

Who will take the prize in 2022?

Woden Valley Rams V Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan Blues were the No. 1 attacking and defensive team of 2021, by a good margin. They were on a six game winning streak when the competition was abandoned - and piled on 50 points in each of their last two games. For mine, Terry Campese's team was on a roll and ready to add another title to their name. Of course, we'll never know what might have been. They travel to Phillip in Round 1, for a meeting with the Woden Valley Rams.

It wasn't so long ago that the Rams won the premiership - back in 2018 - under the coaching of Ash Barnes. Billy Thompson has taken over from Ken Nagas as head coach of the Rams for 2022. He was a Rams junior and, as a player, won a premiership with the club. He also played in the lower grades with the Raiders. He's got a job ahead of him. He'll be assisted by the recruitment of former Goulburn Bulldogs captain-coach Jesse Martin. Martin was a Raiders junior and captained the Manly Sea Eagles to a premiership in the 2017 National Youth Competition. He has also played NSW Cup with the Bears and the Bulldogs. The Rams have also picked up Queanbeyan Kangaroos winger and former Raiders junior Gideon Afemui.

Team news: Fullback Matt Parsons and hooker Charlie Woolford will line up in the Blues' spine, but Terry Campese won't be at five eighth. He'll be at lock, with Clyde Parsons and Mitchell Evans in the halves. Evans represented the Monaro Colts in Laurie Daley Cup at half last year. For the Rams, captain Steven Ferry will lead from the front at prop, while new recruit Jesse Martin takes over the No. 13 jersey. Michael Geiger and Gideon Afemui form the centre pairing.

My tip: It's hard to go past the Blues in this one.

2021 Season record: Rams 2 and 9, 1 draw (9th, -168)
Blues 11 and 2 (2nd, +80)
Form: Rams LLDLW
Blues WWWWW
Attacking record: Rams 19, Blues 39 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 33, Blues 18 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 9 Blues 34 defeated Rams 22 at Phillip Oval

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos had a slow start to the 2021 season, but they built momentum, pushing their way to third place on the ladder by the time the season prematurely ended. Roos mentor Adam Taylor was deservedly recognised as Coach of the Year on McIntyre Medal night. In Round 1, they travel to Greenway for a clash with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

The Roos have re-signed two of their key spine players, hooker Lachlan Ingram and fullback Kaine Pagura. Veteran forwards Aidan Woods and Michael Cullen are also backing up, along with former Raiders juniors Jesse Dent and Jeremiah Simbiken. However, they'll be without halves Sione Vuki and Thomas Casey, who made a big difference to the team last year. Winger Steven Numambo too. All three are turning out with the Raiders lower grades this year. New signings include former Raiders junior forward Jayden Thomas and second rower Jonathan Mose, who played with the Parramatta Eels in the National Youth Competition.

The Bushrangers had a disappointing season in 2021, winning just four games. The eighth placed finish was not up to the standards they've set in recent years. With coach Jarrad Teka returning to New Zealand for family reasons, Tuggeranong has appointed Cooma's Jason Kelly as head coach. Kelly played with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Balmain Tigers in lower grades and is a Tuggeranong Buffaloes old boy. He's also coached Monaro representative teams and an Under 18s NSW Country team. They've got a couple of star signings for the forwards in Zac Saddler from the Manly Sea Eagles and former Raider Darby Medlyn. Former junior Raiders backs Brigham Moeakiola and Wesley Tameifuna have also signed on.

Team news: Zac Sadler has been named at prop for his first game with the Bushrangers, while Darby Medlyn will start at lock. Veteran Michael Brophy and Jack Heyman will partner in the halves. As expected, Kaine Pagura will line up at fullback and Lachie Ingram at hooker for the Roos.

My tip: The Bushrangers should be a bit of a different proposition in 2022, but I'll tip the Kangaroos, even though they're on Tuggeranong territory.

2021 Season record: Bushrangers 4 and 9 (8th, -88)
Kangaroos 7 and 5 (3rd, +80)
Form: Bushrangers WLWLL
Kangaroos WWLWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 23, Kangaroos 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 30, Kangaroos 16 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 10 Kangaroos 20 defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 14 at Freebody Oval

Gungahlin Bulls V West Belconnen Warriors

The Gungahlin Bulls specialised in last gasp wins last year. They almost always seemed to do what was needed to win. That was the secret to their minor premiership in 2021. They did not have the best attack or defence. Those titles belonged to the Blues. They certainly could score a try, and were the No. 2 attacking team. However, defence was their relative weakness. The Blues, Roos, Warriors and even the Sharks had better defensive records. To be fair, the Bulls did have a better defensive record than the Sharks on a per game basis.

The Bulls have had some big losses - the 2021 Fullback of the Year, Tristan Eldridge and 2021 Lock of the Year, Zac Patch. However they'll still have the likes of 2021 McIntyre Medalist, Tre Holten-Williams and Jordan Williams on board. Both represented the Monaro Colts this year. In addition, the Bulls have recruited the 2021 Halfback of the Year, Isaac Walker from Goulburn, and picked up hooker Cooper Purcell. Winger Kane Allan has returned to the club, after spending time in Sydney with the 2019 Rabbitohs Jersey Flegg premiership team and the Sea Eagles' NSW Cup team. So they should again be strong.

The West Belconnen Warriors have appointed Ryan McQueen and Tim Sloman as co-coaches for 2022. They take over from Matt Gafa, who did well to steer the team into fourth place in 2021. Ryan McQueen came through the ranks with the Warriors, and became one of the leading fullbacks in the competition and club captain. He played with the Gundagai Tigers in 2021. Tim Sloman, a Raiders junior, also has a long history with the Belconnen outfit. Veteran second rower Josh Ayers was joint winner of the McIntyre Medal last year. The 35 year old was quick to say he'd be playing on in 2022. But as it turns out, it will not be with the Warriors. He's heading to the Young Cherrypickers.

Team news: Kane Allan takes over at fullback for the Bulls, while Tre Holten-Williams will lead the team at five eighth. New recruit Isaac Walker will be in the No. 7 jersey. Raiders junior Matthew Fellows will partner Lucas Thomson in the second row. Five eighth Bayley Graham and veteran half Robert Roberts will steer around a Warriors team full of new names. Coach Tim Sloman has named himself on the bench, with captain Naseri Naseri at lock.

My tip: Even with the changes in personnel at Gungahlin, it is a tough task to beat the Bulls at home. I'll stick with the home team.

Season record: Bulls 11 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +84)
Warriors 6 and 5, 1 draw (4th, -12)
Form: Bulls WWDWW
Warriors WWLWL
Attacking record: Bulls 33, Warriors 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 26, Warriors 24 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 14 Bull 24 defeated Warriors 16 at Greenway Oval

Belconnen United Sharks V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Belconnen United Sharks had been cellar dwellers for far too long. Led by Matt Woolnough at five eighth and his brother Campbell at hooker, they produced some good wins and climbed to sixth place on the ladder in 2021. They also had strike in the back five, with Livai Kaloutolu named one of the wingers of the year in 2021, while Manase Kaho was one of the centres of the year. Matt Woolnough will again be pulling the strings this year, while the club has retained experienced former Raiders forward, Shaun Fensom - for a swan song season. The Sharks will unfortunately be without hooker Ewan McCarroll, who broke his leg in a trial match. In Round 1 they will host the Goulburn Bulldogs at Bruce.

Goulburn has lost player/co-coach Jesse Martin to the Rams for this season - and rising half Isaac Walker to the Bulls. But Tyson Greenwood will be back as captain and head coach in his own right. Greenwood says he’ll be giving under 19s captain Josh Latham his first grade debut at five eighth or half in Round 1. The Dogs have added star second rower Ron Leapai to the ranks. The 24 year old was part of the Rams 2018 premiership winning team, subsequently spent some time in France and played with the Tumut Blues in 2021. Point scoring wizard Chris Hart will return to Goulburn after spending two years out of the game. With Steve Cummins and Dillon Rota among the re-signings, the Bulldogs will pose a threat out wide. Hooker Jason Gray, and forwards Isaac Lanham and Mitchell Turner are three other locals who have returned to the club. Lanham spent 2021 with the Rabbitohs' Jersey Flegg outfit.

Team news: Ron Leapai and Tyson Greenwood will form the second row for the Bulldogs, with Josh Latham taking the No. 7 jersey and Thomas Croker the No. 6. The Sharks back five features the bustling Tevita Aroaha-Tuinauvai at centre and Darcy Leadbitter at fullback. Nicholas Mead has been named at halfback, while Shaun Fensom will start at prop.

My tip: There wasn't a lot between these teams in 2021, so this is possibly the closest match-up. I'll go with the Bulldogs, just.

Season record: Sharks 4 and 8 (6th, -48)
Bulldogs 5 and 6, 1 draw (5th, -32)
Form: Sharks LLWLL
Bulldogs LDDLL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 28, Sharks 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 31, Sharks 28 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 6 Sharks 22 defeated Bulldogs 16 at NSWRL HQ Bruce

The Yass Magpies have what is probably an unwanted Round 1 bye. We'll take a look at their prospects next week, in our Round 2 preview.

The Greenhouse will again be going around the grounds to cover the Canberra Raiders Cup matches whenever we can this season. Watch for our coverage on @TheGHRaiders on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, while we also provide live scores on Twitter via @CanberraCup.

Gungahlin Bulls have unfinished business in the Canberra Raiders Cup

Unfinished business. Pleasing, but disheartening. That's how Gunghahlin Bulls coach Neil Bijorac feels on the eve of the Canberra Raiders Cup kicking off after last year promised so much only for COVID-19 to crush those hopes. The Bulls had only lost one game when the lockdown in August brought the season to a close.

"Now we've just got to aim up. It's a new team, we've got several new faces. That's our mindset now, just trying to progress to get to the finals this year and see what happens."

Bobby Roberts seals West Belconnen Warriors' comeback over Gungahlin Bulls in Canberra Raiders Cup

Bobby Roberts has to check the tape, but he reckons he nailed this one from at least 40 metres out. A 77th-minute Roberts field goal has gifted West Belconnen a stirring 33-30 comeback victory over the Gungahlin Bulls in their Canberra Raiders Cup opener on Saturday.

"I reckon it was a two-point field goal. We were just happy with the one, just happy I got it. A bit later it'll be 50 out, 60 out," the West Belconnen Warriors halfback grinned.

Sharks struggle in the wet as Goulburn start their season off strong

Goulburn City Bulldogs have come out on top on a wet day in Belconnen, dominating from the start to come out 38-14 winners against the Belconnen Sharks at NSWRL HQ. In a one-sided fixture the Sharks were never able to get a look in, with Goulburn never trailing at any stage through the match.

2022 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Preview

Image

There were some upsets in Round 1 of the Canberra Raiders Cup - but it is probably too early to say that the local football landscape has been reshaped. The clash between last year's minor premiers, the Gungahlin Bulls and last week's big winners, the Goulburn Bulldogs, is looking like the match of the round. The live streaming feature game will take place at Seiffert Oval, when the Queanbeyan Blues host the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

Yass Magpies V Woden Valley Rams

The Yass Magpies had the unwanted Round 1 bye - and will host the Woden Valley Rams in Round 2 at Walker Park. The Magpies produced just three wins and a draw in 2021, finishing in seventh place on the ladder. They also lost twice by just two points - to the Bulls and the Warriors. But they won just once in the final seven matches of last season. The victory came in Round 14 against the Bushrangers at Greenway (32-10).

The Magpies have lost the services of some good young Raiders forwards - Jayden Clarkson, Loghan Lewis and Caleb Esera - and half Sione Moala. To help fill the void, they have signed a prop forward from New Zealand's Wellington Orchas - named Bradley Clyde Moafanua. With that name, of course he was destined to play in Canberra. In addition, they've signed Forbes Magpies junior Jack Hartwig, a back rower who captained the Under 18s Western Rams in 2020. Half Rylee Blackhall will be another new face. He comes from Wellington, in country New South Wales and has spent time in the Penrith Panthers and Wests Tigers junior systems. Re-signings include captain Shaun Davis, Josh Fattore and Kyle Danilczak, while Cameron Hardy will be back at the helm as first grade coach.

In Round 1, the Woden Valley Rams upset the Queanbeyan Blues, producing a 16-6 victory at home. The Blues led 6-4 at half time, and the arm wrestle continued through the first 20 minutes of the second half. But when Rams winger Thomas Scrivener scored his second try of the afternoon in the 61st minute, the Rams got themselves in front. A try to second rower Sean Maloney sealed the game in the shadows of full time.

Team news: Josh Fattore and Rylee Blackhall form the new look halves combination for the Magpies, with the spine rounded out by Kai Douven at fullback and Jack Hartwig at hooker. For the Rams, Nicholas Baldwin takes over from Lachlan Eveston in the No. 1 jersey. Experienced centre Michael Geiger is out, replaced by Scott Swanson. Raiders Jersey Flegg player Aiden Kawiri has been named in the second row.

My tip: The Magpies won the last time these two teams played, but I'll go with the Rams, based on their good Round 1 form.

Season record: Magpies 1 bye (5th, 0)
Rams 1 and 0 (3rd, +10)
Form: Magpies LLLWL
Rams LDLWW
Attacking record: Rams 16 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 6 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 6 Magpies 38 defeated Rams 12 at Walker Park

Queanbeyan Blues V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Queanbeyan Blues host big first round winners, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. The Bushies piled on seven tries and 40 points against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last Saturday at Greenway. The home team led by 30-0 at the mid point of the second half, when fullback Kaine Pagura crossed for the Kangaroos' only try. But Tuggeranong quickly struck back, with Zac Saddler standing in the in goal and offloading to five eighth Jack Heyman for a four pointer. Winger Jayden Pollard wrapped it up for the Bushrangers, when he crossed out wide. There have been some changes in personnel this year at the Blues - and they struggled against the Rams last week.

Team news: Blues hooker Josh Mitchell is again turning out for the Raiders in NSW Cup tomorrow. Charlie Woolford - the son of former Raiders hooker and captain, Simon Woolford - will start in the No. 9. Queanbeyan coach Terry Campese is back at five eighth and Mitchell Evans drops back to the bench. Noah Gafa takes over at lock. The Tweed Seagulls junior debuted for the Raiders in Jersey Flegg last weekend against the Sea Eagles. For the Bushrangers, Michael Brophy is out - and is replaced at half by Jack Davison. Bailey Rogers comes in at fullback in place of Damien Hayden.

My tip: Playing at Seiffert will be a different proposition for both teams, but the form on the board is too hard to ignore. I'll go with the Bushrangers in this one.

Season record: Blues 0 and 1 (7th, -10)
Bushrangers 1 and 0 (1st, +34)
Form: Blues WWWWL
Bushrangers LWLLW
Attacking record: Blues 6, Bushrangers 40 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 16, Bushrangers 6 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 5 Blues 24 defeated Bushrangers 22 at Seiffert Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs V Gungahlin Bulls

The 2021 minor premiers, the Gungahlin Bulls, were first start losers in 2022 - suffering a 33-30 defeat at the hands of the West Belconnen Warriors. The Bulls still know how to score points, and led by 20-6 at half time. And while the visitors kept themselves in touch, the Bulls led 30-16 with 20 minutes left on the clock. Then came the comeback for the Warriors. First, veteran half Bobby Roberts took an intercept near half way and ran 50 metres to score under the posts. Next, Todd Sherd twisted his way over from dummy half. That levelled the match at 30 all, with around 10 minutes remaining. With time running out, Roberts kicked a towering field goal from almost 40 metres out - giving the Warriors the lead for the first time. And a penalty goal after some sin bins and after the siren delivered a drama-filled, three point victory to West Belconnen.

In Round 2, Gungahlin travels to Goulburn for a clash with the Bulldogs. Goulburn dominated the Belconnen United Sharks from start to finish at Bruce in Round 1 - with winger Steven Cummins scoring a hat trick and new recruit Ron Leapai named man of the match.

Team news: Chris Hart takes over at five eighth for the Bulldogs, replacing Thomas Croker. Goulburn's forward pack is unchanged. For the Bulls, Isaac Walker will shift to centre, with Jordan Williams taking over at halfback. Dylan Hately has been named in the second row, replacing Matthew Fellows.

My tip: This shapes as the match of the round. The Bulls will be much tougher opposition for Goulburn than the Sharks. But I'll go with the Dogs at home.

Season record: Bulldogs 1 and 0 (2nd, +24)
Bulls 0 and 1 (6th, -3)
Form: Bulldogs DDLLW
Bulls WDWWL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 38, Bulls 30 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 14, Bulls 33 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 12 Bulls 22 drew Bulldogs 22 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Belconnen United Sharks V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

This game features two, big first round losers - and that has left them on the bottom of the ladder on points differential. It's a second home game in a row for the Sharks - and this game will tell us a lot about whether last year's gains for the Belconnen outfit have rolled forward.

Team news: Shaun Fensom has been named at lock for the Sharks, with John Papalii - the brother of Raiders prop Josh - taking over in the front row. For the Roos, Michael Cullen will start in the seccond row, switching with Jayden Thomas. Thomas will start at lock this week.

My tip: Both teams have quite a few changes to their lineups in 2022, so this game is a bit of a flip of a coin. But I'll go with the Kangaroos to bounce back here. Pun intended.

Season record: Sharks 0 and 1 (7th, -24)
Kangaroos 0 and 1 (8th, -34)
Form: Sharks LWLLL
Kangaroos WLWWL
Attacking record: Sharks 14, Kangaroos 6 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 38, Kangaroos 40 points conceded per match
Last meeting: 2021 Round 4 Kangaroos 24 defeated Sharks 18 at Freebody Oval
