26-0 to Raiders while I’m not watching. 38-0 to Bulldogs while I have been watching.
Even when it was the Raiders I knew it was gangers.

AT A GLANCE: The Canterbury Bulldogs pulled off a huge comeback against the Raiders in NSW Cup on Saturday at Canberra Stadium. The Raiders led 22-0 at the 30 minute mark, but went on to lose, 39-26.

The Raiders started fast, with winger Elijah Anderson crossing out wide after just 30 seconds. Half Matt Frawley marched up the middle of the field 10 minutes later, almost unchallenged by the Bulldogs defence. In the 19th minute, Adrian Trevilyan scored an individual try, scooting out of dummy half. Brad Schneider quickly followed up with a powerful run from a red zone scrum play - scoring despite the attentions of Bulldogs half Bailey Biondi-Odo. The tries were flowing fast and easily and the Raiders seemed to be cruising.

But a try to Bulldogs centre Creedence Toia in the 33rd minute proved to be a turning point. The Bulldogs proceeded to score six tries in the space of the next 15 minutes. When replacement winger Ryan Gray scored at the 60 minute mark, the Bulldogs had piled on 38 unanswered points. Raiders winger Steven Numambo got one back in the 70th minute, but that was a case of too little too late. Biondi-Odo kicked a field goal in the 79th minute, to add insult to injury.

Raiders fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, returning from a hamstring problem, made 182 running metres, five tackle breaks and a line break - though there were some errors he'd probably prefer to forget. Forwards Peter Hola (166), Ata Mariota (119) and Josh Allen (110) also broke 100 metres gained. Adrian Trevilyan (32), Ata Mariota (26) and Mitch Spencer (26) topped the tackle count. Matt Frawley posted one line break, one try assist and a line break assist.

The Raiders next face the St George Illawarra Dragons at Kippax on Saturday. They're coming off a 24-22 win over the Knights at Newcastle on Saturday. Fullback Treigh Stewart scored a hat trick, while centre Max Feagai scored a double. They'll be players the Raiders will want to watch. The Dragons have had a recent draw against the top four Bears (28-28) and a win over the last placed Sea Eagles (34-16). They have also had recent losses to Mounties (41-40) and the Rabbitohs (26-10). The Raiders' attacking and defensive records are slightly better than the Dragons. On back to back losses, the Raiders will be hoping to bounce back in this one.

These two teams had been scheduled to meet at Wollongong in Round 16, but that match was cancelled due to bad weather. It was declared a draw.

Team news: Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad has been named as a reserve in the NRL squad and has been replaced at fullback by Sione Vuki. Semi Valemei (knee) returns to the field at centre, with Elijah Anderson out of the team. Hooker Adrian Trevilyan and half Matt Frawley are other important "outs". Mitch Souter comes in for Trevilyan, while Mitchell Spencer will partner Brad Schneider in the halves. Juwan Compain replaces Spencer in the second row, while Loghan Lewis comes in at lock for Josh Allen. Allen drops to the bench. Manase Kaho has been included on the interchange list. The Raiders have again not named a full squad, in light of injury and illness.

Season record: Raiders: 9 and 7, 1 draw declared (6th, +44)
Dragons: 8 and 8, 1 draw, 1 draw declared (8th, -65)
Form: Raiders: WWWLL
Dragons: LLWDW
Attack: Raiders 27, Dragons 24 points scored per game
Defence: Raiders 25, Dragons 28 points conceded per game

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a 30-18 loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons on Saturday afternoon at Kippax. It was a young team, with seven of the top 17 starting the year in the Jersey Flegg squad. Two started the year in the SG Ball squad. It highlights how seriously the Raiders' lower grades have been impacted by injury and illness this season. The Dragons started strongly, dominating possession and territory. They took an 18-0 lead at the 30 minute mark, and from there never really surrendered control of the game.

Raiders fullback Sione Vuki produced the first points of the game for the home team, when he ran wide from dummy half five minutes before the break. He crashed over the line but had some work to do to get the ball to ground. Ten minutes after the break, the Raiders' hopes were raised by a try to Jayden Clarkson, who followed a grubber to the in goal from Mitch Souter. That reduced the gap to just six points, but it was the closest the Raiders would get. Tries to Dragons fullback Treigh Stewart and Ethan Clark-Wood put the result beyond doubt. A good run from Raiders prop Peter Hola was rewarded with four points in the 79th minute - but it was a consolation try only.

Only four Raiders ran for more than 100 metres with the ball in hand - Peter Hola (130), Semi Valemei (127), Sione Vuki (109) and Brad Schneider (113). Mitch Souter (39), Jed Stuart (30), Loghan Lewis (29) and Josh Allen (29) topped the tackle count.

The Raiders next face the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Canberra Stadium on Saturday. It is the first game of a triple header, with main game being the Raiders' NRL clash with the Panthers. The Rabbitohs are coming off a 42-18 loss to the first placed Newtown Jets at Henson Park. The Rabbitohs have produced one recent win, over Mounties (30-0). But they've also posted recent losses to the Bulldogs (20-10), Knights (26-14) and Eels (16-14). The Raiders have the better attacking record, but the Rabbitohs have the advantage in defence.

With only four games of the regular season remaining, the Raiders probably need to win most games from here if they hope to make the top five. They are level on 23 competition points with the fifth placed North Sydney Bears and one competition point adrift of the fourth placed Parramatta Eels. All of the teams they face over the next month are below the Raiders on the ladder, so it is achievable if results go their way. It will help if the club can get some troops back on the field. Hopefully, it starts with a win on Saturday.

Team news: The Canberra Raiders have named just 12 players for this match so far, in light of the long injury list affecting the lower grades. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is set for more game time in NSW Cup. He replaces Sione Vuki (broken hand) in the No. 1 jersey. Corey Horsburgh (pneumonia) returns to the field at lock, after a few weeks off. Last week's starting players, Michael Asomua (wing) and Mitchell Spencer (five eighth) have not been named in any grade. Loghan Lewis, Jed Stuart and Josh Allen all go back to the bench. Jayden Clarkson, Tane Kiriona and Niu Mariota have dropped back to Jersey Flegg. Hopefully five players can be found by Saturday!

Season record: Raiders: 9 and 8, 1 draw declared (6th, +32)
Rabbitohs: 10 and 9 (7th, +74)
Form: Raiders: WWLLL
Rabbitohs: LLLWL
Attack: Raiders 27, Rabbitohs 24 points scored per game
Defence: Raiders 25, Rabbitohs 20 points conceded per game
Recent meetings: 2022 Round 11 Raiders 41 defeated Rabbitohs 10 at Redfern Oval
2021 Round 8 Rabbitohs 26 defeated Raiders 22 at Kippax
