2022 Canberra Raiders NSW Cup

Post by greeneyed »

The Raiders have signed a winger from the St George Illawarra Dragons, James Schiller. He's Brett Mullins' nephew. Not sure if he's still eligible for Jersey Flegg, but probably not based on the Instagram announcement from his management. Guessing it is a NSW Cup contract. He played four games of NSW Cup last year and scored three tries. He comes from Young, so is effectively a local. The Raiders were interested in him before he signed with the Dragons, moved to the Dragons after finishing school.

This was from the time he signed with the Dragons back in 2018:

Hearing Joel Carbone will be coaching NSW Cup in 2022, Peter Marrapodi to coach Harold Matthews, replacing David Small. Joel Carbone has been the stats guru and analyst for the NRL team.

Canterbury Bulldogs to bring back NSW Cup team in 2022

The Canterbury Bulldogs have announced that they will bring back their NSW Cup side this coming season.

The move will see the Bulldogs go back to running their own team in the NSW Cup in 2022, in addition to continuing their partnership with Mounties, to whom they will provide players and support.

Read more: https://www.bulldogs.com.au/news/2021/1 ... m-in-2022/

Looks like Phil Gould is behind the change. This story suggesting Mounties will have to go it alone in 2023: https://www.zerotackle.com/bulldogs-set ... ns-111531/

Doesn’t look like a great move for Mounties at this point to link with the Dogs. Hopefully the Raiders stick to having their own team now though. Gould knows that’s what’s required to build a strong club and a proper pathway to firsts.

Did the Mounties cut ties with the Raiders or the other way around? I can’t remember.

If they cut ties with us to go with the Dogs what a bed **** decision that turned out to be, hopefully we stick with running our own team tbh.

Canberra Raiders stats man Joel Carbone takes NSW Cup coaching reins

Joel Carbone, the Canberra Raiders numbers man is taking the reins of the Raiders' NSW Cup side for 2022. Raiders coach Ricky Stuart wanted Carbone to have that experience to help his recruitment work.

"I've been basically assistant with first grade for the last three years, but this will be the first time I have my own team - but not necessarily my first time coaching," Carbone said. "I've been helping [Stuart] do the attack the last three years. This'll be a different challenge entirely - coaching the reserve-grade side."

It is not going to happen. It would be a massive problem for all the Qld sides plus Melbourne and the Warriors.

20 stars for 2022 | Xavier Savage

Canberra Raiders outside back Xavier Savage was one of the star attractions who made their NRL debut in 2021. And despite his season ending prematurely after a shoulder injury, he certainly left a few defenders in his wake during his three games.

Looks like it might be a a mix of these lists: https://www.raiders.com.au/news/2021/11 ... d-tracker/

That's over 65 players for three grades. But I guess we will see.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders travel to Henson Park in Round 1 of the 2022 NSW Cup for a meeting with the Newtown Jets. The Jets are the feeder team for the Cronulla Sharks - and this will be the second game of a double header, with the Raiders up against the Sharks in Jersey Flegg. While the NRL squads are set to be expanded for game days, we will see a range of players from the top 30 squad and development list regularly turning out in this grade. The Raiders' top squad is very deep, so they will hopefully be making some waves.

This will be the first match as the NSW Cup coach, Joel Carbone. He originally came to the club as a stats guru, but has more recently been assisting coach Ricky Stuart with the attack. He'll continue as an NRL assistant while running the "reggies". Stuart has said he wanted to give Carbone his own team, with an eye to developing him into a recruitment specialist.

The Raiders defeated the Jets twice last year, prior to the cancellation of the season. In Round 4 at Kippax, the Raiders piled on 60 points and 10 tries, defeating the Jets by a margin of 40. Corey Harawira-Naera and Corey Horsburgh starred in the pack, with both crossing the line. Harawira-Naera and winger Brigham Moeakiola both got doubles. The Raiders won 20-10 at Henson Park in Round 13, with former Raider Kai O'Donnell scoring two tries.

Team news: The Raiders back line includes the big names of Jarrod Croker at centre and Xavier Savage at fullback. Josh Smith, recruited from the Mackay Cutters, makes his debut in green on the wing. Sam Williams and Matt Frawley are included in the halves, but have swapped their usual spots. Prop Ryan Sutton has surprisingly been dropped to NSW Cup. Up and coming forwards Trey Mooney, Harry Rushton, Clay Webb and Ata Mariota have been named in the starting pack. Adrian Trevilyan and SG Ball graduate Toby Thorburn make up the hooking duo.

Not to my knowledge. Our first Foxtel game is Round 5 in this grade (see the draw at the top of this section). If there’s a live stream, on NSWRL TV, of any games, we will do our best to let people know. The NSWRL doesn’t reveal that until a few days beforehand, typically.

Thanks GE. I think NRL, Fox etc. are missing a trick here. Could get some good engagement with fans if it was broadcasted.

An idea for the future, NSW / QLD Cup starts a month or 2 earlier to lengthen the season which would also generate a lot more interest in up and coming players who could later force there way into trails and first grade.

I think the NSWRL has handled coverage poorly. They should get as much as they can on Fox League and FTA TV. If broadcasters won’t cover more than one or two games a week, that’s fine and it’s understandable. But then the NSWRL has a duty to get every other match live streamed. Their NSWRL TV initiative is woefully inadequate. Park footy is able to organise it. Competitions like the Canberra Raiders Cup have every match, every round, every grade, live streamed. They should be able to arrange this for every NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg, SG Ball and Harold Matthews game. Easily. The NSWRL stopped community radio covering games a while back too, which is madness, if there’s no other coverage.

NSW Cup 2022 Preview: Canberra Raiders

With new coach Joel Carbone taking over from Peter Marrapodi and several talented juniors coming through their pathways systems, there is plenty for Raiders fans to be excited about in 2022.

“We had a young squad last year, some of our young guys got some exposure to NSW Cup and they took a lot of confidence out of that and the fact they were able to progress into the NRL,” Carbone said.

“We’ve got a few exciting, young outside backs,” Carbone said. “We’ve got James Schiller who is a new addition to the squad, Brad Morkos, Michael Asomua who has come through our pathways system has been very impressive.

Every match in the Qld Cup, the Colts (under 21s), Under 19s and Womens is being live streamed this season. I think you have to purchase a subscription, but every single game is available.

The NSW Cup no longer has a deal with Channel 9 for coverage and I think you will find that the Fox coverage will only start after the NRL womens comp home and away season finishes as both of the Saturday and Sunday day time games this week have NRLW curtain raisers.

I expect there is a fair chance the Newtown game will be chosen by the NSWRL for live streaming. I am not sure whether the Daily Telegraph are also streaming some games like they are with juniors.

There is no reason why every game couldn't be streamed these days.

I should also add that the Raiders games on Saturday are part of four games at Henson - Roosters v Wests Harold Matts and SG Ball are before Jersey Flegg. I expect that is set up to allow streaming of all four games.

Of course if it keeps raining like it is in Sydney, games might be off again this weekend.

What a way to shoot them selves in the foot. As an NRL fan (particularly of a side that’s not humming along in top 4) the NSW cup game featuring all the up and comers is my second favourite game to watch all weekend. And now we can not watch it.

I would love to see how savage, Sutton ,
Rushton, Mooney, Mann etc. go
